Introduction Peter Wilson MBE DL Chief Executive
Your Friends membership entitles you to discounts as well as priority booking. While you know this, I’m not sure it has ever been put into a definable context.
ON SALE NOW This show has been added to our programme since the last main brochure was issued in March, and is on sale now by post, online, by phone or in person. Sunday 23 April OMID DJALILI
So let me demonstrate how the system works to your advantage. MAMMA MIA! went on sale to Friends on June 1. On the morning of June 9 it went on sale to the general public. Between June 1 and the morning of June 9, Friends of the Theatre Royal bought 4,401 tickets to a value of £198,458. On June 9 alone, the day when the general public was able to book, a further 2,934 seats were bought to a value of £102,297. You had the pick of the seats. You took advantage of the £2 discount per seat. You were able to plan your theatre visit on the day you wanted. You were at the front of the queue. The West End focusses on the sale, not the customer. As long as there’s a never-ending stream of new people to buy seats at high prices, and a never-ending stream of new shows to theatres whose discomfort is the wonder of the world, the West End doesn’t really care about repeat business.
That’s why we offer the no-quibble discount and priority booking period. That’s why you’ll be offered the discount even if you’re trying to buy the last two tickets to a complete sell-out. That’s why we have occasionally turned down productions that won’t let us make our Friends offer. We need you to trust us that we have your interests at heart. We need you, when it comes to making a decision about coming to the Theatre Royal, to be positive about us, whatever your feelings about the show itself. I’ve said it often, but it can never be repeated enough: the Friends are absolutely critical to the Theatre Royal’s health and survival. So thank you for your continued support, encouragement, criticism and close attention. Our responsibility is to make sure that you always feel special. Please let me know if there’s anything you feel we haven’t been paying enough attention to. I look forward to hearing from you.
In the regions we have to focus on the customer, not the sale.

Pride and Partridge “It was a great feeling,” she said, and although it was a ploy which landed her in trouble with the headmistress, it was also the beginning of an acting career which has rarely seen her off our television screens over three decades.

THE NATURAL ESCAPE
Felicity has been in everything from Doc Martin, Lovejoy, A Touch of Frost and 2point4children, to My Family and Victoria Wood As Seen On TV, Felicity Montagu and more recently has played Cousin Pru in The Durrells and Miss Cast as Mr Wickham in a school Adolf in all three series of children’s production of Pride and show Hank Zipzer, for which she is Prejudice, and with just one line currently filming a finale to be aired to deliver in the whole of the in 2017. play, a young and very bored Felicity Montagu decided to play Her film credits range from Perpetua it for laughs with a quick wink at in Bridget Jones’s Diary to Mrs the audience – and she brought Mainwaring in this year’s Dad’s Army the house down. movie. But she is perhaps best known as the long-suffering and very sensible Lynn Benfield, PA to Steve Coogan’s highly-irritating fictional radio presenter Alan Partridge, in the television series and Alpha Papa movie, set and partly filmed in Norfolk. Now Felicity is returning to the stage once again in Regent’s Park Theatre’s UK tour of Pride and Prejudice, onstage here from September 27-October 1, bringing her undoubted comedic prowess to the role of Mrs Bennet, and she is thrilled: “It’s wonderful! I have always wanted to play Mrs Bennet,” she said, “And I’m very excited to come back to Norwich. I’m sure Alan will send his love!” She first came to the city on tour straight out of drama school, and then got to know Norwich really well during the filming of Alpha Papa: “We spent a lot of time at the station when we did the film. I am very fond of Norwich. I love the city. I love the flea-market. I remember Cinema City and loved their flapjacks and coffee – I hope they still do them. I came back with the family on holiday too, so I have lots of fond and funny memories.”
Circle Magazine July 2016
While her comedy debut in that school play didn’t go down at all well with her headmistress (“I was treated like a leper!”), Felicity had discovered she loved making people laugh. “I was one of those children always making up characters in my bedroom,” she said. “I loved acting. It is such a wonderful thing to do.” In sixth form, her potential was finally properly recognised and university and drama school followed. She has acted consistently ever since, but took a 10-12 year break from theatre when her children were young and concentrated on television and film instead where the hours were more family-friendly. “I wanted to bring up my kids and be able to rush back at the end of the day to bath them. Then when the opportunity came to do theatre again, I felt ‘can I still do this?’ Richard Eyre offered me a part in Quartermaine’s Terms (Wyndham’s, 2013) and I was so shocked I hid the letter. I do love it, but it’s scary. But I went back and I was so grateful.” She was so keen to play Mrs Bennet that despite already being committed to filming for Hank Zipzer, she moved heaven and earth to ensure she could fit in the play too, but there is some trepidation. “I haven’t toured since I was 22 and I’ve never done a tour like this. But my kids say this is going to be really good for me. I need theatre. I really need it and I really enjoy it.” She feels comedy comes from points of reality: “Mrs Bennet is in pursuit of happiness. So she is terribly earnest and eager to please. She has a dilemma as she has all these daughters to marry off. She is a very different character to Lynn. Mrs Bennet is submissive to Mr Bennet, but she is distressed by that, whereas Lynn accepts her condition. Lynn has lots of locks on her doors and is a little person who will always be browbeaten.”

Pride and Partridge Luckily for Partridge fans, Felicity believes Steve Coogan is not ready to give up just yet on his alter ego. “He still talks about it, so I think we might be back in Norwich,” she said. But in the meantime, she is looking forward to spending a week in the city and Pride and Prejudice will certainly be a change of gear for her, not least because it will be a treat to get out of Lynn’s sensible shoes and frumpy cardigan. “I’m surprised I haven’t done more period dramas. I love the way old costumes make you feel and the way you move in them. But I will be looking for some Lynn bargains along the way in Norwich, so if anyone has anyone has any ideas…..”

It all begins on Friday September 1 as the Theatre Royal becomes Titipu for The Mikado, the Japanese village where flirting becomes an offence and fun is poked at the layers of officialdom who police the community.
The visit to Norwich as part of the company’s 2016 tour is the latest chapter of their story which began with the setting up of a Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton in 1994 to ensure their names and work survived following the closure of The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, who won worldwide acclaim for staging G & S. It began as an amateur festival which saw enthusiasts work alongside D’Oyly Carte legends like John Reed, Gillian Knight and Kenneth Sandford. Over the next four years, the festival evolved and The National Gilbert and Sullivan Company was set up. Two decades later, it is going from strength to strength and preparing to stop off in Norwich during its tour.

It was first set up as a way of protecting part of the UK’s theatrical heritage and now The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company is set to bring the duo’s finest operatic works to a wider audience this autumn.
Neil Smith, one of the producers, said: “We brand our Gilbert and Sullivan as fun, friendly and for all the family. That is what you are going to get when you come and see our shows. There is a lot of humour in them. It is respectful to the piece, the costumes are generally very traditional and we want to keep hold of

that because it is part of our heritage. It is something we should be justifiably proud of. “Our directors put their little touch on it and we have Richard Gauntlett, who your audiences will know very well, who also puts his own stamp on the parts he plays for us. That just gives things a bit of freshness as well. People who come to see one of our shows will leave with a great big smile on their face having enjoyed some traditional British theatre.” Gilbert and Sullivan’s work undoubtedly has a very devoted following, but Neil is also keen to attract more young people to experience the operas both on-stage and off. “We encourage a wide age-range not just from an audience point of view but from a cast point of view. We work very closely with many of the musical colleges up and down the country. We are offering the opportunity for youngsters to come into the company and try out Gilbert and Sullivan for the first time, alongside people like Bruce Graham, who is also known to your panto audiences (Igor in last year’s Snow White) and was one of the original D’Oyly Carte Opera Company members back in the 70s and 80s. “Some of the younger performers do not know so much about it. They don’t know about the traditions and the heritage, and this lets them understand and experience them. We also want to attract a new audience who are younger and I think we are doing that. If you like theatre and you like music, there is nothing you will not like in Gilbert and Sullivan. Around 15 to 20 years ago, you heard the naysayers criticising it for being a bit old hat and twee. That is of course nonsense. If you talk to many of the star performers, they say Gilbert and Sullivan done well is a very demanding genre.” Neil also feels the combination of The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance is

Gilbert and Sullivan a perfect way to encourage people to enjoy G & S. He explained: “The Mikado will have a traditional Japanese setting, and be bright and very colourful. We are having some lovely kimonos made for it, along with some D’Oyly Carte-type traditional costumes.” Meanwhile the songs and writing of The Pirates Of Penzance make it a must-see. Neil said: “You have got beautiful melodic songs and you have the best patter song with I Am The Very Modern Of The Modern Major General which will be expertly sung by Richard Gauntlett, I am sure. From a content point of view, it has got everything with traditional Cornish settings and new costumes. It will be fun and energetic.”
10
Already well-known for writing, directing and starring in Norwich Theatre Royal pantomimes, Neil said people can enjoy Richard in a very different style of role. “He is really top drawer. There are certain people who have a twinkle in the eye and know how to engage with an audience. I often stand in the wings and watch what he does and wish I could do the same thing. He is very energetic and he is loved in Norwich. From our point of view, he is great as he is absolutely committed to our opera company, wants it to succeed and wants to help us. You can guarantee he will be delivering 110 per cent every night.” So get ready for a feast of fun, and a great chance to enjoy two classic comedy operas with a cast boasting one of Norwich Theatre Royal’s great on-stage crowd pleasers.

Hollywood Legends
Audiences are set to be enthralled as Dame Joan reveals some of the exciting stories and secrets from her long career and the audience can also put questions to her about her life and work too.
his big breakthrough came when he won the part of Simon Templar in ITV’s hugely popular series The Saint, based on the best-selling books of Leslie Charteris, which ran through much of the Sixties.
There is certainly plenty to ask about as she has appeared in almost 120 feature films and TV shows including creating the role of Alexis Carrington in Dynasty which remains one of the most-viewed television drams of all time. On stage, she has performed on the West End, Broadway, and in both UK and North American theatre tours, as well as gracing the Norwich Theatre Royal stage back in 2004 in Full Circle.
He also enjoyed significant small-screen success in the early Seventies opposite Tony Curtis in The Persuaders, before 1973 saw him land the coveted role of James Bond in the Haiti-set voodoo and gangsters epic Live and Let Die.
Meanwhile her novels and memoirs have sold more than 50 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 30 languages. Peter Taylor, of promoters Cuffe and Taylor, said the evening will be a must-see. He said: “Dame Joan is a true national treasure whose amazing career was born in the golden age of Hollywood and transcends the decades through her film, television and literary work.
Sir Roger went on to star in six more Bond films over the next 12 years as well as fitting in other movie roles in between, including the successful chase caper The Cannonball Run.
Away from the big and small-screen, he has also spent a lot of time doing charity work. Since 1991, he has been a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador and also received an International Humanitarian Award from the London Variety Club for his tireless work for good causes. And these efforts led to him being made a CBE in 1999 and then knighted four years later for his contribution. So there will be plenty of different subjects for him to cover during his on-stage conversation. And, as with Dame Joan Collins’ visit, there will be the chance to put questions to him from the audience as long as they do not leave him shaken or stirred.
“As you can imagine Dame Joan has a pretty unique and engaging story to tell. Audiences are in for a special night where they will be regaled with stories from a bona fide British entertainment legend.” Then Sunday November 13 sees former James Bond Sir Roger Moore tell the story of his extraordinary life and career during a special matinee performance. The Norwich Theatre Royal red carpet is set to be rolled out with the arrival of two international stars to the city. Global superstar Dame Joan Collins and cinematic legend Sir Roger Moore are both set to share showbiz anecdotes and a glimpse into their lives with two intimate live events which will mix Hollywood gossip with a chance to discover what makes them tick.
14
Dame Joan’s visit on Sunday 18 September will be a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend an evening in her company. Although best known as an actress, she has enjoyed a successful parallel career as a writer as well as being a philanthropist. While there is no doubt her glamorous lifestyle will be in sharp focus during the evening, she is also
hoping to reveal more of the real Dame Joan as well. While the idea of these intimate evenings is not new, she is promising a brand new experience for her visit to Norwich. She explained: “I so enjoyed my 10 years performing One Night With Joan all over the world that I am delighted to be doing an entirely new show. Each performance will also be different so you will see something new in Norwich even if you have seen one of my other shows.” Circle Magazine July 2016
His visit back in 2012 was a total sell-out and his return looks like being no exception. Sir Roger will be in conversation with his biographer Gareth Owen about his incredible life and career. Sir Roger is one of Britain’s best-loved actors. Although he worked on the small screen and theatre from the time he left school,

The Sound of Music The Norwich Theatre Royal stage is going to be alive with The Sound Of Music this autumn as one of the world’s most popular musicals returns. The true story of the Von Trapp family, who find themselves having to escape to freedom as global conflict touches their lives, has enthralled generations of theatregoers. This brand new production, which takes to the stage from October 18-22, features a cast including The Voice favourite Lucy O’Byrne as Maria and Andrew Lancel (Frank Foster in Coronation Street, DI Neil Manson in The Bill) as Captain Von Trapp. Joining them is Jan Hartley, who tells Circle more about what is in store.
You joined this production as Mother Abbess earlier this year – what made you decide to continue in the role for the new tour? Well I think I’m very possessive of the part now! (laughs) It’s a joy. It’s got the most fantastic numbers in it, and there aren’t that many parts out there for slightly older women. In order to tour, I’d have to be touring in something that I really loved doing and this is a corker, so that’s why I’m back. What is it about the Mother Abbess that attracts you to the role? I think the fact that she’s such an experienced woman and she’s developed a calmness in her life, and a maturity in the way she looks at everything in life, which is a great qualification for being Mother Abbess because obviously you have to look after all the nuns, look after all their pastoral care, and make sure if they have any problems, worries or issues, you try and put everything in perspective for everybody. Interestingly enough, the calmness of the role actually helps to keep me calm on stage, because you naturally think, “ok, just take everything as it comes”. There’s a kindness and surety, and the maturity that comes with age. I actually think Jenny Agutter as Sister Julienne in Call The Midwife is a great role model for the part. More so than the Mother in the film, I would say. She’s just that little bit kinder and a little bit more
18
understanding which is what I’m trying to do. It’s all about being firm but fair and kind. What are your memories of the Sound of Music film? Did you watch it as a child? My history with the film is quite funny, I was about six years old and my father took me to see it in the cinema and it can’t have been out that long. I became completely obsessed, so much so that I nagged him to take me all the time, so I must have seen it at least 20 times. My Christmas present that year was the vinyl album of the soundtrack and that cover must have been so worn out, I played it all the time and learned every song. I used to run up and down the street singing The Hills Are Alive all the time. And my mother told me that our next-door neighbour came out once and said, “I hear the flipping hills are still flipping well alive!” (laughs). So is that what started your love of musicals and wanting to pursue a career as an actress and singer? I really think it is, yes. Julie Andrews had an enormous amount to do with it, she’s responsible! Favourite song/scene from the movie/musical?
music. There are shows that you’re in and you think, yeah, this is nice, and the audiences love it, but this is something that’s so fantastic. Every single tune is amazing, we all know them all, they’re all memorable, but a favourite song? I think possibly Something Good, the love duet. It’s a very difficult one to choose really. Raindrops on Roses, it’s a classic and I get to sing it in the stage version with Maria which is terrific. In the film she doesn’t but a few things have changed around. They altered things for the film which weren’t true for the stage show. Any advice for your younger cast members, especially Lucy who is making her musical theatre debut? I think I’d say pace yourself during the performances, but again, she’s terribly good. Some people who get cast in musicals are cast because they are television names and haven’t had the training behind them so doing eight shows a week is an issue. I’d also advise to keep yourself grounded, that’s a very important thing. I always manage to do that, but show business was never the be all and end all because once that happens, I think you stop being empathetic with the characters you’re playing because you leave your life behind, and you’ve got to be able to put your life experiences into the roles you’re playing.
You’ve spent the last nine months on tour with the show and now you’re embarking on another – you must have a very understanding family! Well, the kids are old enough now to look after themselves – as for the husband, that’s a different matter! I try to get home when I can and this time we’re doing weekly runs so that might be better. You’ve played some famous roles in your time - what has been your favourite to date? Playing Christine in Phantom of the Opera was a wonderful experience which I did for nearly two years and again, I worked with a fantastic creative team and cast. When I was playing her, it was in the days when Phantom hadn’t been open that long and the queues around the theatre went on and on and on. That happened for every single performance, so you had the adrenaline and the excitement while also thinking, I’ve got to do this as well as I possibly can because these people have waited months for their tickets. They are queuing up in all weathers to see the show.
Not many people will know this, but you’re also a Harley Street qualified Semi-Permanent Makeup Specialist – a far cry from musical theatre! What got you into that? Well, I think when you get older, especially in musical theatre, you realise you can’t necessarily rely on there being the roles for you. I haven’t toured for a long time because I like being at home so I needed to find something that I really wanted to do in order to tour again. About four years ago, I decided I wanted to retrain in something that was really interesting and creative that I could do from home. I actually have my own clinic, which I am endeavoring to keep running while I’m on tour. It’s interesting, it’s rewarding, and the before-and-after experience makes me feel good.
When I played Maria, which was in 1985/86 I think, I realised it’s one of those shows that you love being in because you love performing the

Sunny Afternoon, which bagged four Oliviers including Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement In Music, is set to explode on to the Norwich Theatre Royal stage on April 11-15. It features some of the biggest songs from the Kinks including You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and Lola, and tells the story of their early life. It has been a multi-award-winning West End smash hit as well as picking up Olivier Awards. Now the story of one of the biggest bands of the Sixties is set to come to Norwich Theatre Royal.
Ray Davies and his band made a huge impact on the Sixties music scene thanks to the raw nature of their tunes, but where did they come from and what happened to them as success arrived?
young people begin to find their voice and popular music becomes so important to many. And it depicts what happened to the band as they found success, warts and all. Ray, who came up with the plot for the musical, said: “Its message is really remember where you are from. Sunny Afternoon is all about home. I come from a very matriarchal family where the women are very strong. You also get closer to your family as you get older and you lose people and move on.
This hit production is set in a Britain halfway between the conservative Fifties and the swinging Sixties as the country finds itself in a state of flux,

Sunny Afternoon “It does also look at the incredible business hassles we had. It really only touches the tip of the iceberg as well as the relationship between my brother and I. We are still very close although many people do not believe that. We actually did not argue much. It was the people around us, but we do have this saying ‘why discuss things in private when you can fight in public?’” The show also boasts a strong creative team and is directed by Edward Hall, best known to Norwich audiences as artistic director of all-male Shakespeare company Propeller and as a director of several episodes of ITV’s Norfolk-set comedy drama Kingdom, which starred Stephen Fry. So get ready for a high octane performance packed with Sixties musical goodness and a strong message to keep our family in our heart - which is a combination guaranteed to ‘really get you’ emotionally.

To make you laugh I’ve invited people who make me laugh. We’ll be performing stand up comedy, songs, choruses and monologues to make ourselves laugh. My old pal Griff Rhys Jones will do at least ten unplanned, unscripted (possibly libellous) minutes; Karl Nimms and Owen Evans (the Nimmo Twins) will perform some new (probably libellous) material solely written to celebrate my last days; Kit Hesketh Harvey and James McConnell will play with each other at the piano; Helen Atkinson Wood, Philip Pope and Michael Fenton Stevens will blow fresh air into the lungs of the dead horse that used to be known as “Radio Active” (a cult BBC Radio 4 comedy series from the 1980s); Richard Gauntlett and Ben Langley will revive their panto partnership with material from their stand up routines and more; there will be at least two brand new items from the writer of Rowan Atkinson’s Schoolmaster sketch; and in conjunction with the pens of Peter Cook, Alan Bennett and others I will be letting what’s left of my hair down.
Goodness knows who and what else will come along that night. I certainly don’t. So be prepared for a show that for length may rival even Ken Dodd at his most languorous. It will be a joyous evening – entertaining, anarchic, unpredictable, and solely devoted to raising the roof with laughter. Those of you who have followed these things will know that for the last eight years I’ve been pursuing with unnatural doggedness the construction of STAGE TWO, our education, learning and participation centre that has just been handed over. If we sell out on October 16 the evening will raise over £25,000 towards the costs of STAGE TWO – so please come along and have a whale of a time. See you there.

Name: JAMES MACDONALD Job Title: Front of House House Duty Manager Describe your role at the Theatre My main focus is the enjoyment, wellbeing and safety of every guest of Norwich Theatre Royal. I manage the Ushers and Stewards during a show and work with them to make sure your theatre experience is special from the moment you join us for an evening’s entertainment. Were you interested in theatre before working here?
Describe your first theatrical experience
I love the theatre; I was so excited when I got this job! I studied English literature at university and regularly attend productions. In my spare time I write theatre (and restaurant) reviews for Outline magazine and write plays, a couple of which have won local competitions. I love going down to London to take in a show and think we’re so lucky to have The Playhouse and Theatre Royal to see some amazing performances here in Norwich. Before working at the theatre all of my previous work experience was in hospitality so I was really excited to bring my customer service focused ethos into an environment I love.
Sooty and friends live. I *told* my mum Sooty had legs and I was RIGHT! He did a tightrope walk. Who’s the fool now mum?! I was 22, it was amazing.
What do you enjoy most about your job? I love my job, I really do! I most enjoy the few minutes I have alone in the auditorium before opening it up to the audience. I get to see the set for the first time and feel the growing buzz as the building fills with excited guests. It’s an intimate feeling and a sense that something magical is about to happen.
What’s the most memorable production you’ve seen at the Theatre Royal? Without a doubt One Man, Two Guvnors. Or Peter Pan Goes Wrong. Actually, no, Top Hat was pretty great. Nope, definitely Edward Scissorhands. Definitely. Absolutely! Or Rebecca. Oh, this question’s too hard, leave me alone! What show or act would you most like to see come to the theatre? Oh no, you saw my last answer didn’t you? It’s all too difficult! Erm, I’d love to see The Book of Mormon in Norwich! Or maybe War Horse! What would you wish for the future of the Theatre Royal? I’m excited for the possibilities that the new Stage Two building could bring to the Theatre Royal. As well as providing arts education I hope it could look into encouraging new writing and providing a platform for new performers in the region.

Razzle Dazzle Get ready for some Razzle Dazzle this autumn as Chicago returns to Norwich. The classic Twenties-set musical is set to wow audiences and features an all-star cast including Hayley Tamaddon, who is no stranger to the Theatre Royal.
She has played famous soap characters and a host of top theatre roles. Now Hayley Tamaddon is poised to make her Norwich Theatre Royal performing hat-trick as she takes on the lead role of Roxie Hart when the UK tour of Chicago reaches Norwich from 31 October to 5 November. And she is promising something special when the show comes to the city. She said: “I think it is the best musical there is. There is lots of singing, dancing and acting. It is hard work too. My character is barely off stage.” She plays Roxie Hart, who finds herself behind bars with fellow murderess Velma Kelly. The one person standing between her and a cell on Death Row? The seriously slick lawyer Billy Flynn, who is played by John Partridge. He boasts a strong musical theatre pedigree and also played Christian Clarke in EastEnders. And the show features another former resident of Albert Square, Jessie Wallace, who takes on the role of Mama Morton. Hayley says stepping into Roxie’s shoes is a dream come true. She said: “I had wanted to play her for years but always worried I would not be fit enough. My stamina has definitely improved though. We have to do a 45 minute warm-up and then a vocal warm-up every day.”
But the show is getting excellent reviews and strong audience reaction, and marks the latest project from Hayley, who remains one of Britain’s busiest performers. In fact, she was destined to be in the spotlight from a young age, starting baby ballet at the age of two. Dancing was very much her focus until a back problem at the age of 16 meant she had to concentrate on drama. Since then, she has enjoyed numerous theatre credits including The Lady In The Lake in Spamalot opposite former EastEnders and Grange Hill star Todd Carty, which marked her first Norwich appearance, and Janet in The Rocky Horror Show. Hayley also enchanted Norwich Theatre Royal panto audiences when she took on the lead role in the 2011-12 festive spectacular Sleeping Beauty, opposite former Hollyoaks hunk Kevin Sacre, Bad Girls favourite Helen Fraser and the theatre’s panto stalwart Richard Gauntlett.
At the moment, her focus remains on Chicago and she is loving every minute of being part of the show. She admitted: “Of course there are some days when you feel ill, or your voice isn't feeling great, or you've had some bad news maybe, but the show must and does go on regardless. Once you're on stage we have a phrase called "Dr Theatre." No matter how poorly or tired you feel, Dr Theatre takes over and it never shows.” And she says she loves being part of the Chicago family. “It’s great fun when you’ve got a good group of people, and the Chicago team are brilliant. We’ve bonded really well. It’s a strange thing, this business called show business. There can’t be many lines of work where you start a job and, within a couple of days, you’re hugging each other and zipping each other into clothes,” said Hayley. All the ingredients are there for a fantastic theatrical performance. A classic story, stunning costumes and choreography, a talented cast, the massively motivated Hayley Tamaddon….and All That Jazz.
She has also enjoyed a hugely successful parallel career on the small screen with roles including Andrea Beckett in Coronation Street and Delilah Dingle in Emmerdale as well as winning the fifth series of ITV’s Dancing On Ice.

Mamma Mia! Over 60 million people all around the world have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make MAMMA MIA! the ultimate feel-good show! From West End to global phenomenon, the London production of MAMMA MIA! has now been seen by more than 10% of the entire UK population.
MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of staging the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs with an enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship unfolding on a Greek island paradise. Writer Catherine Johnson’s story follows a daughter who, on the eve of her wedding, is on a quest to discover the identity of her father and brings 3 men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. Creator and producer Judy Craymer first had the idea for a stage show based on ABBA’s songs more than 25 years ago when she was Tim Rice’s assistant on Chess, the musical he wrote with Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. “I started talking to them about it in the mid-80s, and then in about 1995 Bjorn said, ‘If you can get the right story, maybe.’” said Judy. She met Catherine Johnson, a scriptwriter, in January of 1997 and

by the end of the year the first draft of the MAMMA MIA! script was complete. She subsequently persuaded Phyllida Lloyd to come on board as Director and the rest is history. At the time, for three women to be the collaborative creative force behind what was to become such a commercial success was very unusual. The show opened in the West End on 6 April 1999 coinciding with the 25th Anniversary of ABBA winning the Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Waterloo’. The audience were totally charmed and since its first performance MAMMA MIA! has been unstoppable. It is one of only five musicals to have run for more than 10 years both on Broadway and in the West End. The London production is now in its 18th year and continues to play in the West End at the Novello Theatre. As a confirmed hit with critics and audiences, next came the chance to
