A stapleon any startinggrid until afew yearsago,grid girls were a constant presence in motorsport from the 1980s onwards, particularly in categories like Superbike. With their strikingbeauty, they held umbrellasto shield drivers from the sun before the green light, or sometimes displayed a sign with thedriver'sracenumber.However,as societal sensibilities have evolved, motorsport has not remained indifferent. Considered a form of female objectification, the World Endurance Championship (WEC) was the first series to do away with grid girls in 2015, followed by Formula 1in 2018. Includingthem on the starting grid in such a manner was deemed a form of sexism. Nevertheless, their image is undeniably etched in the memories of anyone who has followed racing on circuitsaround theworld.

The 2024 WEC season has confirmed that the new regulations were a winning recipe to revive a category that had become somewhat dormant. The three-way battle involving Ferrari, Porsche, and Toyota saw the latter two triumph, clinching the drivers' and manufacturers' championships respectively. Stuttgart's Queen made a remarkable leap forward in terms of development, but Toyota's ever-green GR010, after a subdued start to the season, managed to climb the rankings, beating its rivals and confirming itself once again asthebest hypercar of all time.It'snot easy tojudge Ferrari's season. After a promising return in 2023, perhaps a bit more was expected from the Scuderia, but victory,for thesecond consecutivetimeat the24 Hoursof Le Mans, is worth an entire season. AF Corse's Modena yellow 499P victory in Texas brings the Prancing Horse's tally of wins in 2024 to two. Lamborghini and Isotta Fraschini, on theother hand, failed to meet expectations. TheSC63, asbeautiful asit isunreliable, revealsthat the Sant'Agata Bolognese bull's project is still raw. Isotta, meanwhile, did not finish the season due to budget problems, withdrawing halfway through the championship.

Melancholy melodiesseep from the ancient dwellingsof the Medina. The passage of time is steeped in scents, music, and sounds. You wander through the Souk and suddenly find yourself enveloped in a desire to lose yourself in the humanity of the crowd. You observe people'sfaces, almost asif they weresearching for a lost Orient. Of course, Morocco, geographically speaking, is far from those countries that we are accustomed to callingtheOrient or theMiddleEast,yet everythinghere points back to those rhythms and those lifestyles. And when night falls, faint lights and stars ignite, merging with the echoesof the minaretsand vanishing into your astonishment, as you stand there on the walls, motionless, while your gaze is lost in the thousand eyes of thecity.
