Welcome to your theatre
Welcome to our autumn season which promises to be full of all the drama, fun and fantasy one could want as the nights draw in. Opening with Noël Coward’s delightful comedy Blithe Spirit, its first production here for fifty years, we continue with the return of a number of Playhouse friends. Richard Baron directs Our Man In Havana which will be as inventive and enjoyable as his past hits, Travels With My Aunt and The Hound Of The Baskervilles. In October, Shared Experience returns with another remarkable production to follow on from War and Peace and A Passage To India, whilst many old (and not so old) favourites will join us for Christmas and New Year in Kenneth Alan Taylor’s sumptuous panto, Beauty And The Beast.
To finish the season some of those friends will stay on to appear in Forever Young, a song-filled entertainment set in a home for retired Pantomime performers. It promises to be a glorious end to a wonderful season. Add in a great international dance programme, comedy to bring the house down and music for all tastes and we think you have six months of the best entertainment, right here on your doorstep. We look forward to welcoming you back to Nottingham Playhouse.

A Day in the Death of Joe Egg Friday 19 March – Saturday 3 April Tickets from £7.50 – see page 39
In 1930, legendary Australian batsman Donald Bradman notched up over 1000 runs for his team and returned home bearing The Ashes. With England determined to avenge the defeat, scheming to counter Bradman’s prodigious talent began immediately. By the time the England team set sail for Australia two years later, under the captaincy of Douglas Jardine, a new line of bowling attack had been devised – Bodyline.
Bri and Sheila are the young parents of a disabled ten year-old child (nicknamed Joe Egg) who is incapable of sound or movement. They try to cope by inventing conversations and personality traits for the child, even though she seems unable to communicate in any way. As Bri and Sheila begin to fabricate scenarios, their marriage comes under increasing strain.
Harold Larwood, a coal miner from Nottinghamshire, was chosen for the job and was instructed by Jardine to bowl ‘leg theory’. As a result of Bodyline, England were victorious. Larwood slashed Bradman’s average from 139 to 56 – but at what cost? Politicians took their stand, trade relations between the countries became strained and Jardine and Larwood became the two most hated men in Australia.
A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg was a West End success where it received extraordinary critical acclaim and was also released as a film in 1971 and 2002.

The Island
Adapted from Armin Greder’s book by Laura Lomas
Designed for 9-12 year olds Saturday 14 November at 11am Ustinov room
Adapted from a powerful, beautifully illustrated book for children that explores what happens when a lonely stranger is washed up on the beach of an isolated island. Neither understands the other’s language, and all are suspicious of what he brings to the island. Except the fisherman. He argues that the man should be integrated into the community and help with their daily lives, but all refuse, even the priest. The people are frightened, and eventually there is no other solution but to cast him back into the sea and build a wall around their little piece of land.

Boo’s quiet outward personality is the perfect front for a man who can deliver tender heart-wrenching lyrics as well as foot tapping upbeat arrangements that will leave you crying out for more.
All the elements that make great Celtic music come satisfyingly together in Dervish- exceptional musicianship, breathtaking vocals, high-energy sets of tunes and instantly compelling songs. The band’s live shows are characterised by their carefully crafted arrangements, as they subtly explore the endless rhythms and complexities that go to make great Irish music.
Flossie Malavialle is a French singer who started getting involved in the British folk scene 9 years ago. Since then she has released 6 albums and tours with an open repertoire thanks to an appreciation of all sorts of music genres including ballads, jazzy numbers and songs full of energy or vavavoum as she calls it.

Martin Simpson Thursday 18 February at 8pm Tickets: £12 in advance (£15 on the door) Playroom Twice-winner of Musician Of The Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Martin Simpson’s sound is highly distinctive: led by guitars, banjola and banjo, it moves from solo slide to flat out grooves via nursery rhymes and tragic dark ballads. Simpson’s own songs are beautifully written and at times most unusual in form, telling true stories and dealing with themes of love, loss, home and much more.

Touring East Midlands schools
Thumbs Up
Sign up for Shakespeare
Thumbs up is a new project for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties. Four artists visited two special schools during the summer, working intensively with students and their teachers on ideas, approaches and stories. This will form the groundwork for a new play, specially designed for students with complex disabilities, which will tour schools regionally and nationally in the summer term 2010. If you’d like to be kept up to date on the progress of the project, or express interest in booking the show into your school next year, please email Kitty Parker at kittyp@ nottinghamplayhouse.co.uk.
Our new production of A Tempest, written for Years 5 and 6, will be touring schools from 23 September to 16 October, prior to public performances in our studio theatre. This new adaptation, written for Roundabout and Krazy Kat Theatre by Nick Wood, will be a dynamic and vibrant show featuring fully integrated British Sign Language (see page 20). A perfect introduction to Shakespeare; performances in schools cost just £2 plus VAT per pupil.
The Little Mermaid The Little Mermaid, adapted by Mike Kenny, tours schools from 9 - 11 December and from 11 January - 12 February 2010. Family performances in the studio theatre run from 15 December to 2 January. A delightful
adaptation of this much-loved story, designed specially for 4 to 8 year olds (see page 14). Performances in schools cost just £2 plus VAT per pupil.
The Island The Island, a classroom play for Years 5 and 6, adapted by Laura Lomas, will tour schools from 4 to 13 November. Based on a powerful, beautifully illustrated book by Armin Greder the play explores the themes of prejudice and difference, and performances are accompanied by a participatory workshop. Schools bookings cost £220 for two performances and two workshops (smaller schools could share). Look out for further performances in February and Autumn 2010 – there will also be a family performance in our studio theatre on Saturday 14 November (see page 20).
