HAPPY BIRTHDAY PLAYHOUSE! Photo: David Baird

2013 marks the 50th anniversary of our building. The ‘new’ Playhouse, designed by Peter Moro, is one of the landmark designs of 1960s modernist architecture, and now an icon in the city. To celebrate this significant milestone in the life of the building, and the variety and quality of work it has allowed us to offer audiences over five decades, we will be presenting a number of special events throughout the year. A highlight will be a gala performance of the pantomime in December 2013, 50 years to the day that the company presented extracts from Shakespeare’s Coriolanus on the new stage. More details of our anniversary celebrations, and special 50-related offers throughout the year, will be shared on our website and via our email list. To sign up to our email list please go to nottinghamplayhouse.co.uk We aim to bring you an ambitious and entertaining mix that demonstrates our continued commitment to tell funny, passionate and powerful stories. We are very proud to be bringing you the European premiere of The Kite Runner; adapted from a best-selling and much-loved book by Khaled Hosseini; you can also enjoy the magic of Nottingham’s ultimate pantomime, the humour and pathos of Alan Ayckbourn’s Joking Apart, and the brilliant I Was A Rat! from master storyteller Philip Pullman. As always, we thank our generous funders and national partners, helping us make theatre in the city, for everyone. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

‘…the most satisfying of all his plays so far’ Daily Telegraph

A Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company and Salisbury Playhouse Production in the Main House

Alan Ayckbourn’s

Joking Apart

Of all his seventy-six plays (so far!), Sir Alan Ayckbourn has frequently said that Joking Apart is one of his favourites. Played out in the same back garden over a twelve-year period, this painfully funny play explores the unrelenting themes of ageing, jealousy and unrequited love. Richard and Anthea are the ideal couple. Charming, generous and successful, they can’t help but attract loyal and loving friends. Can they? Is it possible that being friends with such a golden couple can have its downfalls? Could you actually come to loathe such lovable people, especially when they are so… well… ‘nice’? Richard, Anthea and their friends repeatedly gather to relax and compete, both on and off the tennis court, as their private agonies emerge to devastating effect.

In April 2012 three women made a daring and unusual journey from one end of Great Britain to the other. Trusting only their resourcefulness and the kindness of strangers they made an 18-day, 874-mile journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats, completing their unusual expedition on as many varieties of transport as they possibly could. Retina Dance Company

Jasmin Vardimon Company

Corporalis explores the relationship between personal space, architectural space and threedimensional space; the exchange between the inside and the outside; the awareness of ones body and its relationship to the environment.

Exploring notions of what keeps our imagination free, this full-length dance theatre production promises breathtaking physicality with beautifully detailed and brutally visceral characterisation.

Retina has worked with Belgian architectural collective Ruimtevaarders to create an environment for one, two and four dancers. This unique space of colour, texture and sound builds a world that contains Retina’s trademark physicality, while evolving throughout this ‘performance meets installation’ experience.

Now a major force on the international dance theatre scene, the award-winning Jasmin Vardimon Company has enjoyed repeated sell-out success at Sadler’s Wells – book now to avoid disappointment.

Specialising in explosive, powerful dance, Douglas Thorpe’s duet features his trademark raw, visceral choreography. One of the country’s most exciting emerging talents, Jose Agudo’s new solo sees a single dancer fill the stage with physical, intense dance. Sideways Rain Alias

Inspired by the story of the amateur artist and their relationship with dance and music, Miguel builds a work part archeology, part experiment, part testimonial. The theatre becomes a space in which the work of the artist and the audience itself speaks through sensation, memory, architecture and interaction to open up a new set of connections.

An extraordinary, hypnotic performance by award-winning contemporary dance company, Alias, based in Geneva.

And we dance why? For love. For necessity. Co-produced by Dance4 (UK) and Maria Matos Teatro Municipal (Portugal). With thanks for residency funds to Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Produced by O Rumo do Fumo – supported by Presidência do Conselho de Ministros – Secretaria de Estado Da Cultura / Direcção Geral Das Artes.

Twelve dancers cross the stage, then again, tirelessly. They walk, run, fall, rise, stop then start again, driven by an inexplicable desire to run. Sideways Rain is a visual and physical metaphor of the primal force that animates all life. Since its creation in 2010, this work has been a big hit in theatres and festivals worldwide. Contains nudity.

play Mwahaha, by Tom Hall and Graham Elstone 2012

Tuesday 19 – Saturday 23 March 7.15pm Saturday Matinee 3pm

How many artists does it take to make you laugh? Come and find out! Play brings together a selection of artists who use humour within their work. Inspired by the annual pantomime at Nottingham Playhouse, which is filled with slapstick, jokes and witticisms, the exhibition explores how these methods interrupt reality, leaving us in fits of laughter. Will the artists succeed in making you giggle?

The final exhibition, Play will take over Nottingham Playhouse and CAST from 30 November – 25 January. Play will offer an alternative viewpoint to Nottingham Playhouse’s artistic programme. The Cutting Room are giving emerging artists the chance to win a £500 film commission. There is also an educational programmme of schools workshops to coincide with this exhibition. For details go to the-cutting-room.org

40 years of roundabout

Roundabout, the Playhouse’s acclaimed theatre-in-education company, is 40 years old in spring 2013. Founded in 1973 under the direction of Sue Birtwhistle, Roundabout’s remit was to create theatre-in-education productions for schools in Nottinghamshire. In the last 40 years we’ve expanded our reach and now perform our work regionally, nationally and internationally – but the majority of our performances still take place in local schools. We celebrate our anniversary with a production that reflects our aim throughout four decades: to create a programme of world-class work that is relevant, accessible and inclusive for all children and young people.

‘It’s great that our students can access such quality theatre. It is so age appropriate, a refreshing change from much of what is on offer.’

White Peacock by Gill Brigg We are delighted to announce that, to celebrate Roundabout’s 40th birthday, we are planning a new tour of White Peacock, our vibrant play for young people aged 11+ with profound and multiple learning disabilities and autism. White Peacock, written and directed by Gill Brigg, offers a unique experience rich in action, colour, sound, touch and emotion. It is performed inside a specially-constructed micro theatre for just six young people and their companions and features live music, singing, digital projection and Makaton signing. There will be a national tour in late spring 2013, after which the play returns to Nottingham for residencies in schools and family performances at the Playhouse.

Staff Spotlight

CHRISTMAS MENU AVAILABLE FROM 30 NOVEMBER

DEREK GRAHAM: MEMBERSHIPS MANAGER Tell us a bit about what you do… I look after our membership scheme Backstage Pass – surely one of the best deals in British theatre!

What do you enjoy most about your job? I love meeting our members and sharing an extra glimpse of upcoming shows with them. What is the best thing you’ve seen or experienced at the Playhouse? A whole menagerie of highlights: tap-dancing penguins; a luminous hound and a white peacock; a shrew tamed and a goldfish electrocuted. Not all in the same show of course.

CAST is the perfect place to relax and enjoy great food and drink, all year round. RESTAURANT

Serving freshly made food cooked to order. Enjoy great food at a great price with our pre-theatre menu from just £13.95 for two courses. You can book your pre-theatre meal when you purchase your tickets at the Box Office or call CAST direct on 0115 952 3898.

What are you most looking forward to in the Spring 2013 Season? I Was a Rat! I really enjoyed reading the novel with my daughter and it sounds like the adaptation will be brimming with stagecraft and invention. What’s the most unusual thing you have been asked to do in your job? Last season I found myself interpreting for a French dance troupe at the post-show discussion: quelle horreur! I have also run around the streets of Nottingham dressed as an Ugly Sister on behalf of the Playhouse, but then that was voluntary.

BAR

The perfect place to unwind with friends. Serving a range of ice-cold continental beers, cocktails, cask ale, wines and champagne.

DELI

Deli-cious food on the go, or to eat in. With a variety of sandwiches, salad boxes, pastries, cakes and snacks, the Deli will keep you going throughout the day.
