A musical adaptation based on the hilarious children’s novel by David Walliams
Mr Stink Live on Stage David Walliams, that funny tall bloke from Little Britain, has written the smelliest book of all time and in this world premiere tour, Nottingham Playhouse will break new wind ground with a SCRATCH ’N’ SNIFF musical production bringing Mr Stink PONGINGLY to life. Chloe doesn’t like school. She isn’t cool, like the other kids. No iPhone, no DS and no friends. Then she meets Mr Stink – the local tramp. Yes, he smells a bit but he’s the only person who’s ever been nice to her – and that includes her mother, an awful snob and would-be MP, who wants to rid the streets of its homeless. About to lose her only friend, Chloe finds Mr Stink a secret hiding place… but is there more to him than meets the nose? Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company presents
Friday 2 – Saturday 17 September by Michael Pinchbeck
Some stories live on in the soil, long after the game has finished… The Ashes is award-winning, local writer Michael Pinchbeck’s enthralling new play about cricketing hero Harold Larwood, plucked from a Nottinghamshire coal mine to become the spearhead of England’s now infamous ‘bodyline’ attack. Bowling fast at the batsman’s body, Larwood tore the Australian team apart in the winter of 1932/3. Amid accusations of ‘unsportsmanlike behaviour’, diplomatic relations between the two countries plummeted. A dramatic story told in five Test Matches, of two countries, two classes and two men (working-class Larwood and his upper-class skipper Douglas Jardine), this new production, directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Giles Croft, explores the issues and passions that exploded during this most intense of sporting controversies. Noël Coward’s
private lives Starring Janie Dee and Rupert Wickham
Noël Coward’s scintillating comedy of manners. In a smart hotel in a fashionable French resort, two honeymooning couples share adjacent rooms. The only problem is that two of the newlyweds used to be married to each other… When they meet again, they throw themselves into a love affair without a care for the scandalous consequences. Coward’s passionate love story, glinting with razor-sharp dialogue, irresistible one-liners and acerbic wit, remains one of the most successful and popular comedies ever written. A modern classic, Coward’s play exposes the perilous fragility of human emotions. This sparkling new production, starring three-times Olivier award-winning actress Janie Dee and Rupert Wickham (National Theatre/RSC), is directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Giles Croft. Wednesday 26 October – Saturday 12 November by Bertolt Brecht A new translation by Stephen Sharkey
the resistible rise of
arturo ui Local crime boss Arturo Ui has the town in his hands. With a winning smile, a machine gun and an army of hoods, he sets out to take over the cauliflower trade in depression-hit Chicago – he offers ‘protection’, but it comes at a very high price. Mining a rich vein of satire and black comedy, Bertolt Brecht’s no-holds-barred allegory of the rise of Nazism, written in 1941, is a chilling reminder that greed and complacency are all it takes for evil to thrive. Following on the from the success of Mother Courage and The Caucasian Chalk Circle, this powerful play is directed by Walter Meierjohann, Associate Director of the Young Vic. the very hungry
The Very Hungry Caterpillar follows the wonderful adventures of a very tiny and very hungry caterpillar that progresses through an amazing variety of foods towards its eventual metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly. Children will delight in the antics of Little Cloud. High up in the sky, Little Cloud slips away from the rest and transforms itself into various shapes of the things it sees – a sheep, an airplane, a shark and more. In The Mixed-Up Chameleon, a little chameleon is bored with its life – sitting about predictably changing colour all day. So it decides to embark on an adventurous trip to the zoo, wishing it could be more like the other animals.
