Diary of a Football Nobody

by William Ivory

Diary of a Football Nobody is based on former Notts County player David McVay’s hilarious memoir Steak…Diana Ross. This new play is written by acclaimed Nottinghamshire writer William Ivory, whose recent successes include the screenplay for Made in Dagenham and his TV adaptation of D. H. Lawrence’s Women in Love. It’s a candid, warts-and-all tale of what it was like to play football in the 1970s – a world farremoved from the riches and celebrity of the modern game. Full of down-to-earth comedy and tales of boozing, bust-ups and the unique style of the legendary Jimmy Sirrel, Diary of a Football Nobody takes audiences on a lighthearted journey to a bygone age of football and marks Notts County’s 150th anniversary. Contains strong language throughout. Director Matt Aston

Our Style is Legendary is a gritty comedy about growing up in 1980’s Nottingham, which now comes home to the Playhouse following a successful run in the West End. Written by Daniel Hoffmann-Gill, who was born and bred in Nottingham, and starring Nottingham’s own James Hooton (Sam Dingle, Emmerdale), Kent Riley (Zak Ramsey, Hollyoaks) and a whole bunch of other fantastic actors who know the difference between Sneinton and Bakersfield. Wednesday 23 May – Sunday 8 July

The Way Forward Taking our production of Roots by Arnold Wesker as inspiration, The Way Forward explores the artistic re-enactment, the re-creation, and repetition of the past. For this exhibition, the digital artists will recreate technologies of the past in order to consider the possibilities of the future.

John Neville and Judi Dench in Macbeth (1963)

The Cutting Room presents

Over the next year The Cutting Room will bring innovative and playful interactive digital artworks to engage and delight audiences at Nottingham Playhouse.

‘I was determined right from the start that the theatre should belong to everybody’ John Neville

We’ve now reached the point where we have many more people wanting to take part than we can accommodate – so we’re launching the Neville Studio.

The project will see three exhibitions take over Nottingham Playhouse, CAST, and our website. The artworks will respond and offer an alternative viewpoint to Nottingham Playhouse’s artistic programme.

John Neville was Artistic Director of Nottingham Playhouse from 1963 to 1968. He was instrumental in putting the Playhouse and its work onto the national and international map, and believed, as we do, that it should be a Theatre For All People. Sadly, John passed away at the end of 2011, so we have decided to name our Playroom studio in his honour.

The Neville Studio fundraising campaign will complete the transformation of our rehearsal room into a fully equipped and fully accessible performance and education space. It will also support a programme of new work in the studio – hosting workshops, readings, dance classes, youth theatre, poetry, music and much more.

The Cutting Room are committed to developing and supporting artists who work within the creative technologies, film and digital cultures. Funded by Arts Council England to encourage growth and development for digital arts within the East Midlands, Digital Stage will explore how digital technology has transformed the way we view and respond to contemporary art. the-cutting-room.org

Staff Spotlight

We catch up with another member of staff at Nottingham Playhouse… Who are you and what do you do? My name is Sarah Stephenson and I’m one of the Education Officers here at Nottingham Playhouse. What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy creating theatre with young people; their energy, enthusiasm and willingness to take risks. We have some amazing talent in our Youth Theatre now, that we have helped develop over the years.

What is the best thing you’ve seen or experienced at the Playhouse? I love theatre that is experimental, visual or physical, so my favourite past productions include Kneehigh’s Tristan and Yseult, Berkoff’s Oedipus and last season’s The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. What are you most looking forward to in the forthcoming season? Other than Woyzeck which I’m directing – I’m looking forward to Mary Shelley as I love Shared Experience’s experimental, physical style.
