Police track down suspected drug dealer with Operation Vala uMgodi

The Operation Vala uMgodi Proactive team conducted disruptive actions in Virginia and arrested a man for dealing in drugs. On 27 February they stopped

and searched a 46-year-old man in Gold Acre Street. He was found in possession of 27 zip lock plastic bags containing Crystal Meth. The packets, which sell at

R50 each in the streets, were seized.

A White Toyota Legend 50, which had been reported stolen at Brooklyn Police Station in Limpopo, was

recovered by Operation Vala uMgodi team in Ratlali Street, Meloding near Virginia.

“The team worked with a vehicle tracking company and discovered that the VIN (iden-

tifying code for automobile, also known as car’s fingerprints) had been tampered with and altered,” said Lt Col Thabo Covane, spokesperson in the Free State.

SEWAGE DELUGE FORCES FAVOURED MARKET TO RELOCATE

Due to sewage flooding on the rugby field of the Welkom Technical High School (THS), the organisers of the Welkom People’s Market have been forced to temporarily move this popular market to a new venue.

Exhibitors felt the school’s sports grounds was a safe and secure venue.

The Autumn Market on Saturday, 8 March, will now be held in the parking area at Rovers Squash Club in Tempest Road.

The market will take place between 08:00 and 13:30.

“Due to sewer problems at the sports ground, the market had to move. We are grateful for this rescue, and trust this is

going to be a great market.

“From nuts to pillows, rusks to delicious co ee, clothes to toys, and food to skincare. Your shopping options are unlimited,” says market convenor, Dulcie Harris.

Diens om Goudvelder te onthou

MARTI WILL

Pedal-pushing to prioritise children’s safety

There was much excitment in the air when the six cyclists of the Xtreme For Kids Cycle Tour peddalled for schools in Welkom, Theunissen, and Brandfort.

On Friday, 28 February, this Good Samaritan programme, run by the Matla a Bana national child protection non-profit organisation (NPO) aimed at raising awareness and funds for children who are victims of abuse, visited three schools in Lejweleputswa.

“In order to achieve its

mission, the organisation works hand-in-hand with the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence (FCS) unit of the police.

“The six cyclists (comprised of two police officers, professional individuals and business men) aim to finish a 1 900 km tour from Gauteng, through the Free State, and into the Western Cape,” says Capt. Loraine Earle, provincial police spokesperson.

Earle says the Free State was privileged to host these cyclists as they were

passing through, spreading their message against the sexual abuse of children.

She says the cyclists took breaks to visit schools in Welkom, Theunissen, and Brandfort.

“While the children enjoyed watching them and hearing about their good initiative, they were also spoilt with an anti-bullying drama production by two brilliant actors portraying Captain Bully Buster and Bully, who later became Constable Bully Buster, after she changed her behaviour,” says Earle.

Keep your focus and remain true to your purpose

As we approach the end of the first quarter of 2025, it becomes imperative for us to have sensory equity with regards to where we find ourselves in relation to the dreams and goals we envisioned for ourselves this year. It is easy to become distracted by the noise of our environments, especially when they present challenges that invoke a sense of hopelessness or

negativity. Most often the lack of control we have over external influences can govern the climate of our inner world and thought patterns.

Proverbs 4: 25-27 instructs us with these words: Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get side-

tracked; keep your feet from following evil.

We have a responsibility to ensure that we keep our focus in check. Are we allowing ourselves to get derailed by situations or circumstances beyond our control, instead of intentionally influencing the ones we can?

Are we allowing the attitudes and

behaviours of negative people to dictate our own? We must recognise that the dreams our Father has for us are far greater than any external force that could come against us, as 1 John 4: 4 declares: Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Additionally, Hebrews 12: 1 says: Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. I encourage you to keep your eyes focused on what our Father is calling you to this year and to remain resolute to attain it.

May we not regret missed opportunities for growth and increased resilience, but rather enjoy the fruits of faith-filled perseverance.

Fires can be prevented, electricity usage can be reduced

Leaving your phone charger plugged into the socket without a device attached to it poses several risks that many overlook. An electrical expert highlighted these dangers, emphasising the importance of unplugging chargers when not in use.

Firstly, chargers can become fire hazards. Even when idle, they draw a small amount of current, which can lead to overheating, especially if the charger is faulty or of poor quality. This heat-buildup can spark fires, particularly in

poorly ventilated areas of homes and offices.

Secondly, there is the issue of energy wastage. Chargers contribute to “phantom load,” which can account for 5% to 10% of household or business office space electricity consumption.

This silent energy drain, like a leaking water tap, can increase electricity bills and has a significant environmental impact when multiplied across many households, government offices, and businesses.

Moreover, leaving chargers plugged-in

shortens their lifespan. Continuous exposure to electricity can wear out internal components, leading to malfunctioning chargers and potential hazards like frayed cables.

Additionally, power surges can damage chargers left plugged-in and this risks damages to connected devices when they are eventually used.

To mitigate these risks, it is advisable to develop new habits of consistently unplugging chargers when not in use. This simple habit can pre-

City whimpers, with no one to help

Muzi Khumalo, Welkom:

I write to you from the heart of a Goldfields town that once breathed with life but now echoes only with the whispers of the wind.

The streets, once filled with voices and laughter, are empty.

Windows stare blankly like the hollow eyes of abandoned homes. Dust settles where footsteps once hurried, and the rusting swings creak in the lonely embrace of the breeze.

In the boardroom at the Welkom city’s heart, the leaders remain locked in battle

Not with swords or guns, but with words sharpened into weapons. They argue over policies, over power, over their own reflections in the polished table. The room is alive with their voices, but out here, beyond

their walls, silence reigns.

The people have left, weary of waiting.

The markets are barren, the schoolyard is silent, and the church bells have forgotten their purpose. Even the stray dogs seem to sense the absence of life, their paws tracing circles in the dust as if searching for something lost.

I wonder if the leaders know what they are fighting for. Do they see Welkom crumbling around them? Or are they too busy winning battles while losing the war?

Perhaps one day, they will step outside and see what remains: Not a town to govern, not a people to lead, but only the bones of what once was.

Until then, I remain – a witness to the silence.

vent fires, save energy, and extend the lifespan of chargers. Setting reminders, developing posters and constantly sending warning messages can help to get us to develop new habits of switching off. Our built environments also need to adapt to new ways such as using power strips with individual switches to help develop this habit. Ultimately, unplugging chargers is a small effort that can lead to significant safety and financial benefits. – Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson of the Free State Department of Health

Drome’s story overlooked

The once-proud Welkom Airport was operational by 1949. Although it was at first classed as a private airport, it did not take long before it became one of the busiest airports in the country.

By November 1949, 82 airplanes had landed on its tarmac strip. In July 1950, the monthly figure had increased to 182. The total amount of airplanes which had used the airport by February 1952, totalled 4 500.

The number kept growing.

By 1956 there was a monthly average of 700 passengers and 45 tonnes of freight that was transported to and from Welkom city’s airport. Although the tower and main building are a bit forlorn, the runway is still used daily. – Desirée Lourens: “People of the Sand,” Vol. 1; and the WelkomCity Stad Facebook page

Excrement case at end

MARTI WILL

The Welkom Magistrates’ Court has found a patient guilty of assaulting and humiliating a health worker at the Thabong Clinic on 26 July 2024.

The incident occurred after the patient visited the clinic in the early hours of Thursday, 25 July 2024, and expressed dissatisfaction with the speed of service. Following his voluntary departure, he returned the next day with a bucket of excrement, which he poured on the unsuspecting health worker.

“This action created chaos and disrupted health services in the reception area. This forced the clinic to close prematurely,” says Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the Free State Department of Health.

Mvambi says that after the attack, the individual boasted about the incident on social media, further highlighting the severity of his actions.

“A case was subsequently opened with the police, which revealed that he was a parolee. He was swiftly nabbed for this case, as well as violation of his parole conditions. The violated health worker and other affected staff members received counselling from the department and returned to their duties, demonstrating resilience and dedication to their patients.”

Monyatso Mahlatsi, Free State MEC for Health, expressed pride in the health worker’s strength.

“We commend her for standing firm in the face of adversity and pursuing justice against her perpetrator,” he stated.

Mahlatsi emphasised the importance of the upcoming sentencing, hoping that it would reinforce the dignity of health workers and serve as a warning to those who commit acts of violence against public servants.

“We trust that the sentence will send a clear message that violence and abuse will not be tolerated in our health facilities. We urge all patients to remain patient and follow the proper complaints management procedures.”

CRIME RATE A CONCERN

MARTI WILL

The Free State crime statistics for the last quarter of 2024 are a cause for concern.

The number of reported attempted murder cases, sexual offences, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and common assault cases have all increased. While the murder rate in the quarter dropped by 2,2%, the statistics otherwise indicate that 262 people were murdered in those three months alone.

“This implies that 2,8 people were murdered per day in the Free State. With only 2,9 million people living in the Free State, this remains very high,” says Roy Jankielsohn, DA member of the Free State Legislature.

Thabong and Park Road (in Bloemfontein) remain hotspots for various forms of crime. Domestic violence-related crimes account for 30 murders, 82 attempted murders, 117 rapes, 828 assaults with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and 1 750 common assaults.

“Domestic violence is an indication of the breakdown of family values in our society due to the deteriorating socio-economic circumstances, which are exacerbated by drug and alcohol abuse,” Jankielsohn said.

Underreported crimes such as stock theft seems to have reduced by 22,5%.

“But evidence on the ground appears that this has and is still increasing. Underreporting is due to slow response by the police, lack of resources by stock theft units, poor investigations, and poor conviction rates,” said Jankielsohn.

“Failures of our criminal justice system make victims of crimes further victims of a broken system that cannot secure justice.

“We remain convinced that the best deterrent to would-be criminals is the knowledge that if they commit

successfully prosecuted, and punished,” he said.

Runner guns for big races

Nkhetheni Masupa, a wellknown long-distance runner from Welkom, will continue with his quest to run all seven Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) by participating in the London and New York marathons this year.

“I was very lucky to receive an invitation from the SportsforUbuntu charity organisation to help them raise funds through running the London Marathon on 27 April,” he says.

Masupa (52) is helping to raise funds to support the Connected Planet Foundation. He says the foundation believes that everyone has the right to connect with the natural world, whatever their background.

“They sponsor conservation field trips for children from disadvantaged backgrounds to visit places like the Kruger National Park, who would oth-

erwise not have the chance to; giving them the opportunity to experience the wonders of the natural world, as well as giving them a platform to help protect it. To help in this journey, look up the Connected Planet Foundation on justgiving.com and follow the simple steps to make a donation.”

The London Marathon has raised over 1 billion pounds for charities across the world since its launch on 21 March 1981.

“This is why the London Marathon is well known as the largest fundraising event in the world. In fact, the event itself holds a Guinness World Record, for having the most records set in a single marathon.

“I am thrilled to get the rare opportunity to compete in this prestigious event.

“Only 50 000 runners were selected from a record pool of 840 318 applications from around the world, and I am one of the luckiest to be at the starting line come 27 April.”

Preparations are underway and Masupa will be running the gruesome 73,3 km Kosmos 3-in-1 this Saturday, 8 March, in Secunda; the 50 km Om Die Dam race the following Saturday in Hartebeespoort; and the 56 km and 21 km Two Oceans on 5 and 6 April in Cape Town; before the London Marathon.

“Later this year, I will be out to America for the New York City Marathon on 3 November. This event is by far the largest marathon in the world, with over 2 million spectators each year.”

The famous Team Vitality Twins, Nkhetheni Masupa and Abe Nkomo, got their tickets to compete in this event through their sterling performances last year in the Berlin Marathon, in Germany.

They are amongst the few runners selected from around the world to compete in their respective age categories, namely the 50 to 54 and the 45 to 49-year-old groups.

Nkhetheni Masupa will run both the London and New York City Marathon for the first time this year.
