Boere verwelkom broodnodige reën nadat droogte planttyd striem

Boere in die Noord- en Oos-Vrystaat bly hoopvol oor hul oeste, ondanks die uitdagende droë toestande en die min reën wat aan die einde van verlede jaar hier geval het.
Groot gedeeltes van die binneland het in dié tydperk ’n kritieke droogte ervaar, wat ’n drastiese invloed op die aanplant van somergewasse gehad het.
Hittegolftoestande en min reënval het die aanplant van gewasse ernstig belemmer. Boere wat in Oktober geplant het, het in November en vroeë Desember bekommerd geraak oor die gebrek aan reën.
Hendrik Knobel, Vrystaat Landbou (VL) se streekverteenwoordiger in die Bethlehem-omgewing, sê dat die mielies wat einde verlede jaar aangeplant is, oorspronklik geknou is deur die erge droogte.
Die reën wat sedert 20 Desember 2024 geval het, het die mielies help herstel. Boere kon intussen ook soja en suikerbone aanplant.
“Die meeste boere was teen die eerste week van Januarie klaar geplant. Weiding het ook weens die droogte in die slag gebly.” Knobel sê dat, hoewel die seisoen

uitdagend was, die vooruitsigte belowend lyk. Hy voeg by dat die OosVrystaat sedert middel Desember tot nou gemiddeld 160 tot 180 mm reën ontvang het.
Manie van Niekerk van Langgelukbeleggings in die Kroonstad-distrik sê dat hulle ná die eerste goeie reën 85% van hul mielies en soyabone kon plant, maar daarna het hulle ’n maand geen reën ontvang nie.
“Aanvanklik kon ons ook nie aartappels plant nie, maar danksy reën in Desember het ons die aartappels in die grond gekry, sowel as al die laaste aanplantings vir die seisoen. Ons het egter steeds meer reën nodig.”
“Ná die eerste reën in Oktober het die meeste boere begin plant. Ek en ander boere in die omgewing het eers einde November begin en was vroeg in Januarie klaar geplant,” sê Hannes de Vos, ’n boer van Kroonstad.
Hy reken goeie reën is op pad en dat die meeste aanplantings weens die droogte kon herstel.
Authorities succeed through stern action
Operation Vala uMgodi was successful in fighting crime during the December holiday.
As part of the operation Vala uMgodi team, the SAPS, South African National Defense Force, Department of Home Affairs, Provincial Traffic Department, the Border Management Authority and private security companies were strategically deployed on national roads and secondary routes in the Free State to increase policing visibility.
Additionally, various operational concepts continued along the borderline in the Ficksburg and Ladybrand areas, as well as at ports of entry.
A vehicle check point was set up at the intersection of the N8 national road and R26
route. Among others, members stopped a minibus, and during the search a loaded 9 mm pistol was found. A 49-year-old male was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Also, a roadblock was assembled on the R30 provincial route – used by motorists traveling between the Free State, Gauteng and North West.
A total of 36 undocumented persons were arrested during the operation.
Ultimately, a robbery in Thabong was followed up on and a 28-year-old suspect was arrested.
All suspects will appear before the court soon.

Reserve’s condition sparks worry
Great concern has been raised over the current condition and the maintenance of the Wolhuterskop Nature Reserve outside Bethlehem.
During an oversight visit by a DA delegation to the reserve at the beginning of January it was noticed that there is a serious decline in the management of the wildlife populations and the infrastructure.
“The reserve remains a key environmental and recreational destination for residents and tourists.
“The reserve was also used for equestrian activities
and remains an asset and source of income for the municipality,” said Estie Senekal, DA councillor in the Dihlabeng Local Municipality.
Teboho Zacharia Mokoena, MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and Human Settlements, provided key updates on the reserve’s management, income, security, wildlife sustainability and visitor amenities.
The oversight visit observations did not support the replies supplied to the MEC by the municipality
regarding the management of the reserve and its resources.
Mokoena said that SANParks would assist the Dihlabeng Local Municipality in managing animal populations through ethical removal methods, including the catching and culling of game, where necessary.
Senekal said the Wolhuterskop Nature Reserve represented a vital ecological and recreational asset, providing a safe haven for wildlife and an enriching the experiences of nature enthusiasts.

Man (19) drowns in river
BOY (10) MURDERED
A tragedy occurred when a 19-year-old man drowned in the Vals River near Lindley.
Three men were trying to cross the river outside Lindley on 7 January when the 19year-old experienced trouble and drowned.
The Welkom Search and Rescue Diving unit retrieved his body on Wednesday, 8 January.
On the day of the drowning, at about 18:00, the 19-year-old was swept away by the current of the strong flowing river. His friends rushed to help him, and
authorities were summoned to the scene.
The three men from Ntha near Lindley were from the municipality local camp.
The 19-year-old was identified by his father and an inquest has been launched.
The police warn communities to be more vigilant and to very seriously monitor the movements of their children. It is advised that children must avoid swimming across strong flowing rivers and muddy stationary water at quarries.

The suspect in the murder of a 10-year-old boy who went missing from Bohlokong, Bethlehem, have been arrested and has appeared in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court. Mduduzi Ndweni (18) briefly appeared on Monday, 13 January. The case has been postponed to 20 January.
Another suspect who was initially looked into could not be linked to the case and did not enroll to appear, apparently because he had lied about his involvement in the murder.
Hlonolofatso Mokoena (10) was last seen on Thursday, 9 January, at about 09:00. He was playing in the street with other children at the time.
On Saturday two suspects from Bohlokong, aged 18 and 20, were arrested for his murder. His body had been discovered near the Bakenpark Graveyard with multiple stab wounds.
A case of murder is being investigated. The motive behind the murder is not yet known.

Een van die gunstelingpaartjies in verlede jaar se seisoen van die werklikheidsreeks Boer soek ’n vrou is steeds gelukkig, en die liefde blom.

Boer JW Snyman (24) en sy meisie, Danelle de Vos (23), was een van die paartjies in die 16de seisoen van kykNET se Boer soek ’n vrou waarop kykers versot was.
Die twee is die afgelope tien maande in ’n vaste verhouding en is baie gelukkig.
“Wat is tydelike afstand teenoor ’n leeftyd saam,” sê Danelle oor hul langafstandverhouding.
“Dit is moeilik, maar dit is moontlik om dit te laat werk,” meen sy.
JW boer op Howbill buite Ceres in die Wes-Kaap en Danelle, ’n boorling van Kroonstad, is ’n wiskundeonderwyseres in Heilbron.
Hoewel die afstand soms ’n uitdaging kan wees, sien die paartjie mekaar elke skoolvakansie – en hulle probeer om ten minste elke ses weke bymekaar uit te kom.
Dit is juis dan wanneer hulle die beste van elke oomblik maak om hul verhouding standvastig te hou.

Vir hulle is kommunikasie, eerlikheid en om dinge uit te praat as dit krapperig is voorkeursake.
Tog glo hulle hul opregte liefde vir mekaar laat hul verhouding bowenal so goed werk.
Hulle kommunikeer daagliks deur mekaar op die hoogte te hou van die dag se gebeure.
Elke aand sal hulle videooproepe maak en ook op dié manier ernstige en belangrike besluite neem.
Hulle ondersteun mekaar veral as die verlange te erg word.
As dit vir hulle baie uitdagend begin voel, hou hulle hul oog op die groter prentjie.
Danelle sê Boer soek ’n vrou was vir haar ’n
ongelooflike ervaring, en sy sal dit beslis aanbeveel.
“Dit is ’n kans wat ’n mens vat, en dit maak nie saak hoe die proses vir elke individu uitspeel nie, jy kan dalk net jou lewensmaat ontmoet.”
Nie net het sy in die proses gegroei en meer van haarself ontdek nie – sy het dit baie geniet om die deelnemers van oor die land heen te ontmoet, wat soveel waarde tot die proses bygevoeg het.
Haar raad vir voornemede deelnemers is: Waag die kans op liefde, maar maak seker dat jy gereed is vir daardie volgende stap in jou lewe. Wees ernstig oor die proses en gee jou alles. Vra wat jy wil weet vir die boer en maak die meeste van elke oomblik.
“In die proses ervaar ’n mens die lewe op ’n baie besonderse manier.”
Club gives back with Christmas party
The Bethlehem Golf and Country Club hosted its annual Christmas party for the children of the Charlotte Theron Child and Youth Care Centre (CTK) in Bethlehem.
The celebrations were held at the golf club in December, attended by 52 children aged three to 18 years old.
Children were treated to hamburgers and ice cream, and also received gifts, while the highlight of the day was the fun had on a jumping castle with water.
Santa Clause made a special appearance to hand out the gifts.
The club’s committee has stated that giving back to the community is the core value of the club – and this is embodied in the annual Christmas party for the children of CTK. The committee has extended a word of thanks to everyone who contributed to making this event a success, as the efforts of everyone involved made a lasting impact on the children.

Boere sien met verligting uit na 2025
Die nuwe jaar het hoop vir die boere in die binneland gebring nadat erge hitte einde verlede jaar beleef is.
Die reënseisoen wat gewoonlik in Oktober begin, het verlede jaar traag aan die gang gekom – met die eerste goeie neerslae middel Desember.
Boere in die Vrystaat was benoud oor die eerste aanplantings, maar sien nou herstel danksy die reën.
Hulle is boonop positief oor die oeste en glo dat die jaar se opbrengste minimale skade sal hê.
Die Vrystaat word beskou as Suid-Afrika se kosmandjie, wat jaarliks tot 8 miljoen ton kos produseer.
In Desember is ’n versoek aan die regering gerig om boere wat deur die erge droogte geteister word by te staan.
Dit is die regering se verantwoordelikheid om die kosmandjie te bewaar en hulp te verleen wanneer rampe woed.
Indien dié hulp nie verleen word nie, sal elkeen in die land die nagevolge daarvan dra.

Mag ons die landboubedryf nie as vanselfsprekend aanvaar nie en die harde werk en geloof wat daarmee gepaardgaan opreg waardeer.

Die waarheid is, ons het geen beheer oor môre nie. Wat ons wel het, is die vermoë om vandag sinvol aan te pak. Dalk beteken dit om jou kind se lag te waardeer, eerder as om oor
jy dink dat sekerheid in jouself te vind is nie. Of as jy dink dat jou ewige bestemming bepaal word deur hoe gereeld jy in die kerk is, hoe gereeld jy Bybel lees, of hoe jy naasteliefde uitgeleef het.
So baie gelowiges sterf in grys klere. Hoekom? Want dit kan eintlik nie anders nie: Hulle leef ’n grys lewe. Hulle stort nie oor die afgrond van sonde nie, maar bereik ook nooit die bergtoppe van geloof nie. Hulle vloek nie, maar bars ook nooit uit in lofprysing aan God nie. Hulle drink nie, maar is ook nie onder die Gees se invloed nie.

Ook die beperkte beskikbaarheid van weiding het boere benoud gehad, maar die welkome reën het in verskeie gebiede dié kommer verlig.
New meters an upgrade, not glitch
The installation of new smart electricity meters by the municipality in Bethlehem has caused a great deal of confusion.
According to Isoldé Laesecke, the independent ward councillor for the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, the rollover to the TID system was due to the old prepaid meters that were programmed with certain codes that commenced in 1993 and would reach the end of the sequence on 24 November 2024. Therefore the system had to be updated.
“If the rollover to the new system was not done the public would not have been able to purchase electricity after 24 November 2024, leaving those getting smart meters without power until they are installed and those not getting smart meters without power.
“The current token system (Standard Transfer Specification, or STS), which was initiated in 1993, reached its sequence limit by 24 November, after which tokens will be generated on a new sequence.
“This was always part of the system’s design and is not the result of a glitch or mistake on anyone’s part.”
The new smart meter system is part of a programme launched by treasury, where municipalities could apply for debt relief, having Eskom debt written off over three years.
Municipalities that applied and were approved have strict conditions to comply with.
A conditional provision requiring the rollout of smart meters is to ensure better collection of revenue, and so forth.
This rollout is financed through a National Treasury grant and commenced in most of the approved municipalities in November.
Municipalities that have been approved to participate in a debt relief program to write off arrear’s debt owed to Eskom will be the first to benefit from a new conditional grant for smart prepaid meters.
The new system is quite easy and
user friendly it reminds you when you credits run low, when the app is released you will be able to upload energy remotely, through the app you should be able to check consumption in almost real time and if power goes out, the control room will receive notification which should reduce response time for repairs.
The municipality will also have access to the meter.
Smart prepaid meters are capable of two-way communication between the meter and Eskom.
This enables Eskom to read information off the meter, detect power outages and meter tampering, and send information to the meter such as programming updates.
Automated instructions are also sent to the meter to interrupt the power supply when your prepaid account balance reaches zero and reconnects supply once you have loaded credit.
The benefits of installing a new smart meter
) Cost Saving: customers will be able to monitor and have control over their consumption and use their electricity more efficiently and sparingly.
) Improved customer service: queries relating to electricity billing will be eliminated, and real-time outage detection will enable Eskom to respond faster to faults in the field.
) Reduced theft and fraud: smart meters have anti-tampering technology and tamper alarms, which are linked to the Eskom system to report malfunctions and detect meter bypassing.

Twee leerlinge aan die Hoërskool Trio in Kroonstad wat in Desember aan die nasionale junior jukskeikampioenskapsbyeenkoms in Kroonstad deelgeneem het, is as kapteins vir die onderskeie spanne waarvan hul lid is, gekies.
Mikaylah Mynhardt (15) en Rigard van Zyl (17) was lid van Noord-Vrystaat-spanne wat aan die kampioenskapsbyeenkoms deelgeem het.
Mikaylah is ’n tweede jaar agtereenvolgens in die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademiespan ingesluit en sal vanjaar die span as kaptein lei. Die span het ’n silwermedalje in die kampioenskap verwerf.
Rigard was kaptein vir die Noord-Vrystaato.19-seunspan en is vir die Suid-Afrikaanse o.19-seunspan gekies. Hy is ook as kaptein gekies van die span wat later vanjaar na Namibië toer.
Vanjaar het meer as 480 leerlinge uit al nege provinsies aan die nasionale junior kampioenskapsbyeenkoms deelgeneem.

Divan Marais (links) en Jacques Jordaan van die Hoërskool Witteberg in Bethlehem het aan die Global Schools Challenge-rugbytoernooi in Bloemfontein deelgeneem. Altwee dié spelers, wat vanjaar in gr. 11 is, was lid van die Next Gen XV-span, wat uitstekend in die toernooi gevaar het. Die geleentheid het van 9 tot 11 Desember
plaasgevind. Adriaan Kleynhans se span het ’n goue medalje verwerf, en hy is genooi om deel te neem aan die Suid-Afrikaanse hengelproewe, wat van 13 tot 14 Desember plaasgevind het.
Hannïka Heymans se span het ’n silwermedalje verwerf, en sy is ook genooi om aan die Suid-Afrikaanse proewe deel te neem. Albei het in die proewe uitgeblink.
