Where is our future society heading? The Education Space

hen we came to the realisation that our purpose as an education body is to “prepare children for a world that doesn’t yet exist” – we were taken aback by the starkness of our own language. Still, this has been true for any generation of school leavers in the last 100 years. The world of work outside of school tends to evolve a lot more rapidly than the education system does – and this disconnect has gone into overdrive over the last 20 years.
available to our students once they leave school. Add in the impact of climate change, and the stakes for our future children are becoming higher by the day. Children in schools right now recognise this – they are fully aware that their world will be a vastly more complicated place by the time they leave school. In 2019 school children all over the country went on
two mass environmental strikes, thousands protesting outside parliament asking the UK government to do more about climate change. Many commentators have said that our student generations have more clarity on this huge issue than our politicians, yet as long-time educators we have seen time and time again how the voice of children is ignored and not listened to.
The pace of change is accelerating - to the point where the entire framework of our economy and jobs market is undergoing a huge shift that our education system is not responding to. The Education Space is constantly looking forward to the impact that AI and automation is going to have on the types of jobs

The age old maxim “children must be seen and not heard” has cut us off from hearing the voices of humans who will, very soon, become adults and be asked to walk in our place. We see the voting age issue as a huge sign of disrespect to our younger generations – there has been widespread frustration in our schools
voice. Considering that younger generations have more access to ideas and technology than any before them, there are many innovators and movements coming through from the youth that we should be taking seriously.
“The education system should remember that their students are the primary users. Not parents, and not politicians” at 16 and 17-year-olds not being able to vote in the EU referendum, when it is their futures who are being decided. Many school teachers supported their students to take action in these recent strikes and channel their passion into activism - a good example of how adults can be advocates for younger generations and empower their collective
Take a look at some of the teenage entrepreneurs coming through in the last decade. Several teen inventors and innovators have been picked up by the press and touted as ‘prodigies’ and adorable ‘miracle kids’.
Boyan Slat founded The Ocean Cleanup project when he was just 18 – and his idea has bloomed into a team of 80 engineers, scientists, researchers and computational modellers working daily to remove plastic from our oceans. Slat’s invention came about through a project he worked on at school, nurtured and developed until it became something potentially world changing. In a similar vein, the recent Netflix film The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind tells the story of William Kamkwamba. As a teenager growing up on a desolate farm in Malawi Kamkwamba taught himself to build a wind turbine using a dusty McGrawHill textbook called ‘Using Energy’. Now listed on ‘Forbes 30 under 30’ and an international inventor and speaker, Kamkwamba is another example of the creativity, impact and ingenuity that a young mind can produce.
However, the things that purpose-led students can achieve with the right support and a powerful idea is a lot bigger than all that.

While these tech entrepreneurs might be high flyers, we see them as representative of an industrious, innovative spirit alive in younger generations today that is completely under-reported by the media. The children we see in school are creative and impassioned. This is not currently being nurtured by their education system in the way that it could be - this missed opportunity is one of our main drivers to improve the education available to our students. Our society and our
education system must realise that children are ready to have more of an impact on the world. The collective actions they can take using social media has shown them the power of collaboration; they intuitively understand the power of big ideas that go viral and swoop through a population. They understand that our new world is built on social capital, and that understanding who you are as an individual gives you a lot more power than paying your dues to an outdated system.
We believe that children shouldn’t feel like dropping out of school is the best route to making a real difference. Society is heading in a direction that is more sustainable, and is going to require more action, more direct involvement from empowered citizens who want to shape our future for the better. We could be supporting our students to become these individuals, if we built the clear purpose they crave into their education.

Overall, we think the education system should take inspiration from developments in the business world when it comes to listening to your audience, and putting your user experience above all else. Customer-centricity is shaking up marketing departments and start up think tanks worldwide – businesses are having to evolve to put their customers’ needs and wants at the centre of everything they do to keep their share in the market. The education system should remember that their students are the primary users. Not parents, and not politicians. Our student body is our real customer base, and we should be serving their needs – now and in the future - first.
They deserve an education system that is going to prepare them for the real world they will be met with when they exit school. They deserve to learn things that spark real passion inside them, things that will empower them and sustain them in our flux economy.
We should be supporting our future child with every resource we have. Out of anyone, they will be the ones who will save our future society.
Our students should feel like their educators are on their side, and are listening to what is being said. If you look at breakthrough businesses coming through from brilliant kids and school leavers – these enterprises are designed to make a difference, to have a positive impact on the world.

We revisit one of our most popular Guest Editorials to date. The final instalment of Roy Leighton’s Lessons from Hamlet finished off a spectacular series of articles that dived into the poetic mastery of Shakespeare, revealing wisdom from which teachers and school leaders can apply to their craft.

regular feedback and also to understand how we see time and experience time.
For Hamlet, and for all of us, what shapes and tests our character is how we sustain our initial enthusiasm to a cause or process of change once the reality of our daily lives kicks in.
The process of ‘continual improvement’ or ‘Kaizen’ in Japanese, is a process made famous by the car manufacturer Toyota in the 1980’s but, has its roots in the more ancient understanding of behavioural science and change.
There are two ways to make sure we maintain ‘the native hue of resolution’ - that state of determination. We need to have a simple and clear process involving
Kaizen focuses on the need for a shared purpose and a feedback loop to make sure that everything you do is working towards an agreed outcome. If what
hen Hamlet talks about opposing the ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’, he doesn’t mean one public display of enthusiasm.

you are doing is not serving this shared goal, stop it. Very simple, but very powerful. When I work with school leaders and students, we check in regularly and ask ourselves and each other three questions: What do I need to keep? Look at the impact that you are having and the goals that you have set and see what’s working for you and others. Are you and those around you still open, kind, consistent and able to change your minds to embrace the emerging reality? Are you ‘being the

change’ or just holding onto the same processes as before? Keep the process, mindset and systems that are working well to serve your shared goal. What do I need to develop? What needs to improve? What techniques or technologies need to be introduced, refined or removed? Which of the four essential questions (why, who, how and what) need more attention? What do you need to let go of? This is often the hardest part of continual improvement. The emerging reality is so challenging to our current view that we feel under threat and our creativity moves into excess or destructive mode manifested in one of four defensive states: Fight - we get angry and frustrated Flight - we remove ourselves from the conversations or relationships that challenge our existing ‘reality’ Freeze - we become ‘petrified’ and incapable of taking any action Flock - we return to our tribe and talk about how others don’t appreciate what we do. We criticise others
(particularly outsiders), and systems (particularly the new systems introduced to improve the process, people, productivity or profitability). Worst of all as a leader we encourage the rest of the team to disengage from the process using the argument ‘that doesn’t fit with our current process’ (of course it doesn’t, we’re supposed to be co-creating a new process) or, worst of all, just walking away from meetings and conversations without any reasons whatsoever. And the team/ flock will agree and do as they are told because that’s what sheep do.
This inability to let go is Hamlet’s dilemma. He can see the emerging reality, but he has to change and he can’t. That is the real tragedy. Sadly, it’s not uncommon. Too many individuals like the idea of doing something radical, but only on their terms. There’s the rub!! We all think the world would be better if people worked in our way. Reality (which is what Kaizen helps reveal) doesn’t work like that. Reality says it is only by being truly present, in this moment, that we are able to liberate ourselves from the past and shape a future that is, as yet,

This brings us to the second principle: Ichinen Sanzen, which can be translated as ‘3000 potential ways of being in a single moment of time’. engine, will just happen. You don’t have to know the finer details of what’s under the bonnet of the car, you just need to drive it.
So Hamlet, in this most remarkable speech, unpacks in these first few lines (there are 12 more that are equally as rich and illuminating) the
dilemma we all face in our personal and professional lives. To be or not to be? To change or not to change? To just start driving or to distract ourselves with a desire for too much detail. Too much certainty. So, what’s the key? How do we maintain an authentic presence in such a

contradictory and confusing world? I think that Polonius sums up perfectly the mindset we should all hold onto when seeking to be of service to ourselves, others and the world (regardless of the disappointment, deception and distractions we face day after day and moment by moment) when he says: ‘to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.’ Hard to do but vital if we are to be the change we want to see in the world.

T
he school councils across The New Vision Trust have been working together collaboratively on ‘Tackling the litter’.
In February, Gallions Primary School hosted a meeting for all the School Councillors from The New Vision Trust where pupils presented their projects.
The initial meeting was hosted at Vicarage Primary School where pupils were given the opportunity to meet and get to know one another. At this meeting, they agreed on an area that was relevant to all four schools - reducing litter.
The School Councils received a warm welcome from Mrs Shazia Hussain, the Head Teacher of Gallions Primary School. The meeting began with discussions in groups to share work that the school councils have accomplished so far, identifying challenges and successes.
A further meeting took place at Nelson Primary School, where pupils worked with the school councils from other schools to share best practise. They took away ideas from what each school was doing to reduce the litter. Some schools went a step further and introduced effective ways to ensure schools were recycling more.
Afterwards, pupils from each school gave a short presentation on ‘Tackling the Litter’ action, which they had been working on since last year. Mr Shahed Ahmed, CEO of The New Vision Trust congratulated the school councils at the four schools
