Newham Primaries Drive for Sustainability The Education Space

The Education Space, The London Borough of Newham and Juniper Ventures collaborate on an exciting initiative to reduce single use plastics. Newham primary schools have been concerned about growing plastic pollution, with the loudest voices often coming from pupil led school councils. Grainne Sheehy, Catering and Procurement Officer, explored ways to respond to the crisis within her role and identified an area we could influence: the hundreds of packed lunches prepared for pupils for educational visits or sporting events over the busy summer term, each incuding a single-use plastic bottle of water. The Education Space partnered with colleagues in Capital Programme in Newham to ring

fence the small surplus in the team funded food service budget to purchase reusable water bottles and with Juniper Ventures to help co ordinate and distribute. This has meant with The London Borough of Newham, The Education Space and Juniper Ventures working in partnership we were able to provide over 3750 reusable bottles to Newham schools, this will help to remove bottled water from lunches that are prepared for school trips and help to reduce the singleuse plastics. So now for each packed lunch the bottles will be filled and issued to

pupils then washed and sterilised after use for the next trip. Primary schools will receive their allocation over the coming weeks, distributed by Juniper or for those schools using other catering contractors, by The Education Space. We have already received lots of stories from Newham Schools about school councils focusing on sustainability this year and so we are going to include a sustainability section within the newsletter if you or your school are helping to save the planet, then let us know about it and we can showcase the great work you are doing.

Send us your stories on helping to make Newham a sustainable borough to: newsletter@theeducationspace.co.uk

Manorfield London to Brighton Cycle Manorfield Primary School

Manorfield Primary complete London to Brighton cycle, now only £1,500 away from target amount for facilities to provide healthy living for pupils facing barriers in education. On Sunday 15th September cyclists representing Manorfield Primary rode the 54-mile distance between London and Brighton to raise over £3,000 for the school’s outdoor learning area and sports facilities. It was the second time a Manorfield team had taken part in the London–Brighton event, marking both an increase in participants and in the amount fundraised. With the money raised by the 2018 cycle going towards a new bike storage shelter, encouraging children, staff and parents to cycle to school, the Manorfield Charitable Foundation decided to put funds raised

by this year’s event into the development of the school’s outdoor learning and sports facilities, as well as towards a new educational cooking studio, so that a tradition begins in which money raised through sporting prowess goes straight back into providing access to physical education and healthy living for pupils. The Manorfield team gathered at 8:30am on Clapham Common on Sunday, with school staff

and trustees featuring in the line-up. Every member of the Manorfield peloton completed the 54-mile journey, just as famous for its punishing hill climbs as its wonderful scenery. The amount raised currently stands at £3,310, with donations still coming in and the target amount set at £5,000.
