44 Newham Schools Take Part in Steve McQueen Year 3 Project A New Direction

independent, academies, free schools, faith schools, special schools, PRU and home schooled children.

Last Monday saw the launch of Steve McQueen’s ambitious artwork, Year 3, at Tate Britain, a giant collective portrait of Year 3 classes across London. With 76,146 children from 1504 London primary schools from across the 33 London boroughs including 44 schools in Newham, this major new artwork is an epic picture of the city’s present and an intimation of its future. Every kind of school is represented: community,

The project is the result of a joint endeavour between the Turner Prize and Academy Award winning artist, Steve McQueen, with Tate, Artangel and A New Direction. Over the course of the academic year 2018/2019, A New Direction recruited schools, booked photography sessions, ran the consent process and trained a dedicated team of 9 Tate photographers. When the Year 3 photographers visited 1,504 schools to photograph more than 3,000 classes over the course of just one academic year, it might have been easier to simply snap a picture and move on to the next one like on the usual school picture day. Instead, A New Direction developed an engaging range of workshops for the children and continued to support the photographers to deliver the sessions. The discussions and games focused on the children engaging with the themes

collaborative and exciting experience. Children often forget that there are hundreds of schools within London, so finding out that they were to take part in a project which would include children from across different London schools engaged them from the very beginning. This creative journey has given children the perfect opportunity to celebrate the differences and uniqueness within their peer group.”

These led to some insightful discussions, often with teachers being delighted and surprised at seeing another side to their pupils. It enabled the children to become active participants in the artwork they are at the heart of, and because they were having fun, we got big grins for the photos too. Tate then took these photos and processed, framed and hung them, all 3128 of them! In addition, all three partners worked together to arrange 53 of those photos to appear on giant billboards across London in the run up to the launch alongside a Duty of Care programme for the 53 schools taking part in the Outdoor Exhibition. The response has been incredible, both from the teachers and children who took part and those who have come across the billboards and visited the gallery. One teacher from Enfield summed it up by saying “Taking part in Year 3 provided the children with a

A child from another school in Southwark echoed this, saying, “When the photographers came it made me feel like my class were a big family.” Indeed, Year 3 is considered a milestone year in a child’s development and sense of identity, when 7-and 8-yearolds become more conscious of a much bigger world beyond their immediate family. Steve McQueen’s project captures this moment of excitement, anticipation and hope through the medium of the traditional class photograph, with rows of children sitting or standing alongside their teachers.

Manorfield’s Shakespeare Schools Festival Performance Manorfield Primary School

Primary school students’ updated Shakespeare show for 400-strong audience sees culmination of two months ‘commitment, teamwork and creativity’. Colour-coded Capulets and flossing star-crossed lovers were just some of the contemporary twists Manorfield Primary School gave to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet during their performance as part of the 2019 Shakespeare Schools Festival at the 400-plus capacity Greenwich Theatre on October 29th. The Tower Hamlets school marked its 4th successive year’s participation with the festival, which sees 750 schools take to 118 professional stages around the UK and has been praised by Children’s Laureate Jaqueline Wilson for its fostering of ‘confidence and creativity’ in children. Manorfield Primary’s final performance was the culmination of ‘eight very intense weeks of hard work, rehearsals, workshops, costume making and amazing team work’, according to the school’s KS2 English Leader, Jane Garner. The process involved students improvising movement, dance and mime to help retell the famous story for an audience, and the beginning of September saw 25 ‘committed and enthusiastic’ Year 5 and 6 students, supported by three teacher directors, begin their adaptation in earnest in preparation for the big night. The SSF Festival uses ‘the unique power of

Shakespeare’ to unite and transform the lives of school pupils across the UK, aiming to provide ‘a unique cultural and creative experience to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds’. The festival’s 2018 Impact Report saw 98% of teachers from participating schools record that their students were more confident as a result of the process, whilst 82% reported an improvement in academic attainment. ‘It was so good to see children learning new skills and gaining in confidence’, said Ms Garner of this years’ process. ‘All the teachers were incredibly proud and impressed by the commitment, teamwork and creativity shown by the whole cast over such a short time period,’ said Ms Garner, who has already signed Manorfield up for their next performance: ‘Roll on next year!’

ANNUAL GOVERNORS’ AND TRUSTEES’ CONFERENCE Delivering the best outcomes for children during a time of financial challenge Many schools are feeling the impact of the funding squeeze and some to the degree that may impact the quality of education. A reduction in per pupil income, low birth rates, combined with limited housing in some areas, has led to an immediate impact on some primary schools currently struggling to fill their school places. A growing number of schools in all phases are in deficit and others are depleting their reserves. Savings can be achieved through targeted use of scarce resources, strategic procurement, school-to-school support, effective partnerships, accessing grants and awareness of income-generating opportunities. We warmly invite you to join us for a thought-provoking day, opened by our key note speaker Steve Barker, a specialist in the field of Education Finance, to explore together - through a range of workshops - practical solutions to support schools in delivering the best outcomes for children during this time of financial challenge.

Lister is an 11-16 comprehensive school at the heart of its community. Recognised as one of the most improved schools in the country (DfE, January 2014) this is reflected in our sustained drive to become an Outstanding school with our Progress 8 at +0.30 and our Progress 8 for disadvantaged students in the top 20% of all schools nationally. In our December 2018 Ofsted the inspectors found that the school has maintained the good quality of education and ‘made strong progress in many aspects of the school’s provision‘ since our last inspection in September 2013. Our many strengths are highlighted, including how students are ‘courteous and articulate’ and ‘say they enjoy school and value the wide range of opportunities they are given’. We are very proud that the report recognises our high aspirations, the hard work and good behaviour of our students, and the dedication and commitment of our staff.
