Author Inspires Primary School Students To Read By Bringing Samurai Stories To Life Manorfield Primary School
Manorfield Primary School hosts unusual visit from top-10-selling author Chris Bradford. On Thursday 21st November, Manorfield Primary School in Tower Hamlets, London, hosted a far-from-average author visit from popular children’s writer Chris Bradford. Mr Bradford, whose fictional series Young Samurai is a favourite among young readers and which had already proved popular at Manorfield, delivered his ‘allkicking, all-punching book reading’ to the school in order to ‘get children inspired to read’. The interactive show saw a Year 4 student adopt the role of Ninja Apprentice and even featured a stunt in which Mr Bradford sliced a piece of paper, held by two Year 6 students, in two with his Samurai sword. Mr Bradford also improvised a new show specifically for Manorfield’s Key Stage 1 pupils, transforming them into jungle technique he describes as ‘methodexplorers. writing’, meaning he trains in the skills relevant to his subject matter; the Young The author, who has won over thirty Samurai series involved mastering seven awards for his children’s books, uses a

different styles of martial art, including iaido, or samurai swordsmanship. Manorfield described how they’d been ‘eagerly awaiting’ Mr Bradford’s visit having booked him over two years ago after two of the school’s teachers had seen him perform. ‘We could see then how inspirational and passionate Chris was about getting children to read for pleasure and he didn’t let us down. There was a huge sense of excitement as children entered the hall and saw Chris dressed as a Samurai warrior; many of our Key Stage 2 students had already been reading his series’, said Jane Garner, an English teacher at the school. Kadija, a Year 4 student, said she was ‘definitely going to read all the books to find out what happens next’ after Mr Bradford left students in suspense at the end of his performance. ‘Meanwhile’, said Ms Garner, ‘Samurai Chris kept his young audience thrilled with highly complex sword moves whilst explaining the ways of the Samurai. Many times he joked that if any children moved in the front row they might lose an arm or leg! Two brave Year 6 students held a piece of A4 paper tightly and we all watched, holding our breath, as Chris sliced the paper in two. No children’s fingers were lost, thankfully!’ Mr Bradford finished the visit with a book signing and has since sent a special book box delivery to the school, which features three books dedicated to Manorfield. The visit seems to have proven highly successful regarding Chris’ desire to ‘get kid’s reading for life’; a teacher for the Year 4 class who received the book delivery commented that ‘there is already a long waiting list’ for Mr Bradford’s series.
