Do the Positives of Social Media Outweigh the Negatives?
In this week’s Guest Editorial, Stewart Kiddell (Business Development Manager at The Education Space) discusses social media and whether it is a necessary evil in the modern world.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - INSIGHTS
Merely uttering the words social media sends a shiver down the spines of many people who believe it is damaging to our society. Social media has become a platform for anybody with an opinion to stand up (well, sit in most cases) and say anything they want, true or otherwise. Whilst freedom of speech is a fundamental right in this country, I don’t believe people ever considered that freedom of speech would be used as a shield for people posting anonymous online comments that are derogatory and often inflammatory.
Anonymity within social media has developed the “age of the troll”. Unfortunately, there are people in the world that actively go out of their way to offend and hurt others. Whilst this isn’t a phenomenon created by social media, it has most certainly been aggravated by it; sending letters by post or speaking to someone in person takes a great deal more effort than a random comment online posted under a false name or, better yet, an avatar.
Social media has given trolls confidence because they feel protected and hidden from the world by their profiles, which has seen trolling become commonplace in the world we live in today. Many celebrities and other well-known personalities disable the comments sections on their social media accounts as they no longer wish to receive the vile abuse hurled at them on a regular basis. If these trolls had to say to the individual’s faces what they write online, I think most would just stay hidden in their bedrooms. Even the regular ‘Joes’ of this world will have different experiences with social media. I’m sure we all know
ISSUE 24 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
of people who post about their “amazing lives” when actually we know a different version of the story in private. Social media, along with certain TV shows, created the “Keeping Up With the Kardasians” culture where we have to show off how great our lives are. Whilst I don’t advocate airing one’s dirty laundry in public, there is definitely something to be said for being genuine. My father is one of the biggest technophobes around. He is vehemently opposed to social media and will happily tell anyone who dares mention it in his presence that he doesn’t use social media and he thinks it should be banned. He happens to enjoy using YouTube as well as

WhatsApp however, both of which are social media platforms. This is not an uncommon position, many people do not understand what is and isn’t a social media platform let alone who should and shouldn’t be using them. One of the biggest problems we face in education with the massive amount of communication available via social media, is that bullying no longer stops at the school gates, it can spill over into social media and it can feel like there is no escape for the children on the receiving end.
Whilst in truth children should not be on social media due to the age restrictions, unfortunately we know that they are. Most people are aware that social media platforms have age restrictions, however they do not actually know what they are, even if they think they do. So, with a long list of concerns and issues regarding social media, why would we ever consider
using it? Social media is used by over 47 million people in the UK alone, with 98% of 18-34 year olds using social media on a daily basis. It is so ingrained in our lives now that we have set a trend that is impossible to reverse. We live in a world where we demand 24 hour news at our fingertips, even if that news is just that Julie really loves her husband Mike and she has an amazing new haircut! One of the biggest positives from a consumer point of view is the power that social media has to hold corporations to account. Sending a complaint to a corporation on social media often provokes a speedy response, as organisations are concerned about being

seen in a negative light in front of millions of people. We have also seen for the first time, a platform that allows us to access our target market with a post that takes seconds to create and costs nothing to send. Previously if we wanted to attract the best teachers and ensure we had full classrooms, we would have had to spend small fortunes promoting the school through costly trade shows, postal marketing or magazines. Word of mouth, whilst amazingly effective, is still restricted to the influencers we have in and around the school. Now, through social media, we are given amazing reach, allowing us to access our target market at a time that is convenient to them.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - INSIGHTS
So we have to ask ourselves, why aren’t we making use of this in our schools? Or if we are why are we not doing it effectively? The biggest barriers I experience are schools saying they don’t agree with social media, that their community aren’t using social media, or that they don’t use it because the school has a policy that says the children can’t use social media so it would be hypocritical. Although some schools may believe that their communities are not using social media, the prevalence of these platforms would suggest
that actually all of our communities are using social media and even if there are a few people who are not utilising it, we need to educate them on the potential benefits.
We already know they are using the platforms when they shouldn’t be, so using age restrictions as a reason to not engage and teach children about social media doesn’t hold up.
One example would be if their child is on a trip, the school can provide live updates so that parents do not turn up at the school when in fact the coach is stuck in traffic on the pesky M25.
Using social media can help to reduce our budget challenges by reducing the need for text messaging, increasing the number of children we have in our classrooms and helping to attract the best teachers.
As educators, we are responsible for preparing the next generation for the world which they are about to enter. Part of this responsibility requires us to ensure that children are aware of social media and the effects it can have.
As schools begin to successfully utilise promotional campaigns, can we really afford to fall behind and not use social media? With good education and strong branding, social media can be a huge asset, not something to be feared. If you would like to find out how The Education Space can help to transform your brand and promote your school, please contact our Social Media, Web and Brand team on 0208 249 6900 (option 1). Year 3 Tate Project with Steve McQueen Manorfield Primary School
Manorfield pupils’ class photo displayed at Tate Britain, on billboards around London as part of Steve McQueen’s Year 3 project. Manorfield Primary School in Tower Hamlets, East London, has spoken about their involvement with award-winning artist Steve McQueen’s large-scale public artwork, The Year 3 Project, calling it ‘a celebration of the time spent in a school

class that has created a strong bond and fond memories’. All three of Manorfield’s Year 3 classes had a photographic portrait taken last year as part of the ambitious art project, which

sees a total 3,000 class photos depicting 76,000 children now available to view for free in Tate Britain’s Duveen Galleries. The process included a lesson given by a professional photographer to Manorfield students on the medium and its links to representation, class, race and gender. It will culminate with the school’s visit to the Tate in 2020 to see their photograph, with the aim to ‘create space for an enquiry into concepts such as identity, childhood, changes and memories’ for its students, the school says. Of the impetus behind the project, McQueen has commented that ‘Year 3 is an important time in a child’s life because it’s at that point you’re getting to understand your surroundings. It’s one of those moments where there’s a turning point and you’re getting to understand – possibly – gender, race and class.’ Manorfield Headteacher, Paul Jackson, described how ‘our children have said that they’ve really enjoyed these workshops the Tate has put in place, and it’s helped them appreciate the build-up to their photograph being taken and the power it can have as an outdoor exhibition.’ Ottowa class’s photo was featured on billboards in boroughs across London. ‘It created such a buzz,’ Mr Jackson said,
ISSUE 24 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
‘with parents coming up to the teachers involved to show them billboards that they had bumped into around London and some parents even making the journey to hunt them down!’ The Manorfield staff and pupils involved in the photo travelled to visit one of the billboards and staff described how ‘the children’s faces lit up at the pure size of [it]! Some children made comments such as “look how different I look” or “look how happy I am”.’ The students spent time analysing the billboard photo and discussing the impact it had on them. Mr Jackson said that ‘the children have commented regularly on how excited they are about going to see their photo in the gallery’, and explained his belief in the power of such a art project: ‘it does a huge amount for these children to see themselves represented and celebrated in these important public spaces and around the city that they call home. There’s a sense of confidence and community here that are requisites for fostering creativity in our pupils, and we’re very proud to have been involved’.
