Teacher Apprenticeships The Education Space

On 28th November 2019 the DfE published the ITT Census which demonstrated secondary trainee numbers increased by 2%. In contrast, primary postgraduate courses saw a fall in recruitment, taking it below the 98% target. This data only reaffirms what most of us already know, that there is a teacher recruitment crisis. There is undoubtedly an urgent requirement to recruit more teachers in any way possible (see this recent article on utilising social media). Teaching apprenticeships give schools an alternative way in which to spend

their apprenticeship money while helping them to alleviate the teaching shortfall. Every year the DfE needs to recruit thousands of new teachers to the profession with the expansion of Schools

Direct and teacher training programmes. Teacher apprenticeships are one of the tools schools can use to close the gap in the teacher recruitment market, with the added advantage of being easy to use as well as fee-free.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS

What is a Teacher Apprenticeship? Teacher apprenticeships are a way of training while working. The teacher apprentice will be paid by their employer whilst training to become a teacher.

Requirements: Entry requirements will be the same as current graduate teacher training routes; apprentices must have a degree and pass the skills test however, they will be required to work for four terms instead of three as with graduate teacher training. In addition, apprentices will have to gain their QTS in their third term and during their first term as an NQT apprentice they will need to pass two further assessments.

Benefits: Unlike training through a university or Schools Direct, the apprenticeship trainee tuition fees are paid for and apprentices will receive pay while training.

Pay and Conditions for Apprenticeship Teachers: The government has confirmed all apprentice teachers will be paid as unqualified teachers. Further Information for Newham schools to make the most of the apprenticeship levy can be found here: http://www.newhamconnect.uk/Services/4024

Christmas Meal for the Homeless St Luke’s CEVA Primary School

Staff from our caterers Juniper who provided cooked and served the food for our Christmas meal for the homeless

Linda from Waitrose who are one of our key sponsors for the event

On Friday 20th December 2019 St. Luke’s CEVA Primary School in Canning Town held their 3rd Annual Christmas meal for the homeless of Newham. The event has grown markedly since 2017 and this year, after the children had gone home for the holidays, we were able to serve 90 local homeless people with a full Christmas dinner and desert and then give them take out bags with gifts from Waitrose and thermal underwear and gloves purchased from Primark with monies raised by our children.

like to say a massive thanks to all our pupils, staff and parents for their efforts in hosting and supporting such a successful event, especially at such a busy time of year. It is so important for all of us to think of others who are struggling and our children in particular lead on this. In talking with some of the people who benefited on the day it became clear that sometimes it only takes a few things to go wrong in someone’s life for catastrophe to strike and over the year we have seen this with some of our own families. As a society our children are the one constant bright light at the moment and they really are giving light to a dark world – we are all very proud of them.

Waitrose Canary Wharf sent some staff and staff from Juniper our caterers cooked the food in their own time. The school would
