Employment Law Changes for April 2020 The Education Space

Good Work Plan (GWP) From 6th April 2020 In July 2017, a review of modern working practises was published which formed the basis of the Good Work Plan. This resulted in the government’s commitment to develop a legislative response to issues raised by the Taylor Review. The initial review focused on employment law dealing with four areas: y Employment status y Holiday & sick pay y Legal enforcement y Rights for atypical workers As such, it was decided that there should be a review of

employment law to ensure that it was fit for purpose in what is a new and different era of employment. Therefore, the following changes will be enforceable as of 6th April 2020:

Headteacher Spotlight: Neena Lall, St Stephen’s School & Children’s Centre and Sukwinder Samra, Elmhurst Primary School This week we meet two headteachers who featured in Issue 26 of our newsletter for receiving an OBE and MBE respectively in the New Year’s Honours 2020 for services to education.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - INSIGHTS

Neena Lall OBE St Stephen’s School and Children’s Centre Tell us a little bit about yourself. I was born in the UK to first generation Sikh Punjabi parents and then spent much of my childhood living in Essex, where I was fortunate to be educated privately from the age of 5. After school, I gained a degree in Education at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

During my 9 years of headship I have been able to implement my vision where I want our children to blossom and be successful and develop into global citizens. I believe wholeheartedly that a child’s education should be inspirational, challenging and nurturing. I passionately believe in high standards for

all and work to ensure consistently outstanding education throughout all 4 settings. I have consistently been an effective, enthusiastic, adaptable teacher, manager and leader. I have a strong commitment to teaching and learning, enabling me to support the school and individuals to flourish. My style of coaching

I began my teaching career at a large primary school in Newham. Since then, for the last 29 years I have worked in a variety of primary schools, teaching children ranging from three to twelve years old from many different countries and cultures.

What is your ethos and how is it embodied in the school and your work?

targets high performance and improvement at work and focuses on specific skills and goals, as well as having an impact on an individual’s personal attributes such as social interaction or confidence.

In addition to your OBE, what achievements are you most proud of? Through effective partnerships with parents, staff and international collaboration, St Stephen’s was recognised as State Primary School of the Year in 2017. The success of the school was also recognised by OFSTED with Outstanding outcomes across the four areas of the Federation.

I am also proud to sit on the Teach First National Forum, who lead on training teachers of the future. It was also a privilege to be invited to the Woman of the Year Event in November 2018.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role at St Stephen’s School? I feel honored to work with a highly skilled, passionate staff and governors that believe that it is essential that every child is prepared for the next stage of their life, with an atmosphere of high expectation, memorable experiences together with a reflective, compassionate understanding of themselves and communities around them. My experience thus far has confirmed my belief that headship is one of the most challenging, demanding, responsible, varied and exciting careers there is.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - INSIGHTS

Sukwinder Samra MBE Elmhurst Primary School Can you describe your school’s history? Elmhurst has close links to its community; many parents, staff and governors attended the school as children. I started in January 2001 and the school was struggling at the time in terms of attainment and progress but the school community has always supported it well. Shahed Ahmed came in 2003 and together we forged a strong partnership and the school went from satisfactory to outstanding in 2006.

What is the school ethos and how is it embodied in the pupils? Our school motto is ‘little seeds, big dreams’ and this encapsulates our deep commitment to our pupils who are at the heart of everything we do and our ambition for them to be highly successful and make progress from their starting

points. Our values, or as they are coined, our 5Cs embody this vision: challenge, creativity, care, character and really importantly confidence! Our pupils are taught with rigour, care and passion and really understand their learning. If they don’t understand then our teachers dedicate their time during lunchtimes and breaktimes to explaining work. We have daily catch up in English and maths for all pupils who fall behind and 10 week tuition with teachers after school or on Saturday mornings.

Are there any unusual subjects taught or unexpected experiences offered? Our curriculum has breadth and depth and our curriculum postholders plan exciting experiences like the castles day in year 1 where each room is set

ISSUE 29 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST

up as a part of a castle. Our talented French speakers go to residentials in Paris in year 4 and our artists attend art immersion weeks in different European cities, including Venice and Barcelona. We were awarded Arts Mark Platinum in 2019.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role at Elmhurst Primary School? I adore the whole school community and have been shown a lot of love from staff, pupils and parents for which I am blessed and thankful for. Reading is transformative and one of the strategies that Katharine Young (AHT,) introduced was allocating reading buddies to members of staff. Both of my reading buddies were not overly keen on reading last year but in a term they are now reading more and are pestering me

9

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - INSIGHTS

to find them specific authors, which is fabulous. Reading with them is one of my most rewarding times of the day. All the wonderful moments where children have made leaps in the emotional, social or academic progress fuel my continued passion for the job after nearly 30 years in the profession. On Friday a year 4 boy brought me his English book and compared his illegible handwriting at the start of the year and the beautifully constructed and legible writing a term on. I found the boy’s and teacher’s pride incredibly moving. I could go on and on talking about what are the most rewarding aspects of my work since there are so many and they are multi-faceted in nature. The strategic

decisions that will improve processes and conditions for our school community are all ones that I take seriously and with commitment, benefitting from the support of the CEO, Shahed Ahmed and my new deputy head, Nia Silverwood.

What are your future ambitions for the school? Every child a reader. We have done so much work on cultivating a reading for pleasure culture, spearheaded by talented members of our leadership team like Katherine Roberts, our reading leader in KS1, and Katharine Young and Clara Breakwell. It was great that the school received the national Egmont Reading for Pleasure award last year in recognition of this work.

What I would like is for every single child who is able to read to really catch the reading bug so that they are even reading when they shouldn’t be. Every child a leader of their learning. I would like our children to have more agency over their learning and their school, hence some areas that we will be working on are metacogntion, class learning councils and further improving pupil voice. I heard Sakina, an ex pupil, deliver Greta Thungerg’s speech on climate change with such conviction and understanding and this really brought home to me the need to futher explore our pupils’ potentiality since it is unending.

What would you say sets Elmhurst Primary School apart from other schools? Our continual drive to improve our provision lead to Elmhurst becoming a national Teaching School in 2012, the lead school of a national Maths Hub in 2014/15 and a national English Hub in 2018. As a complex organisation we are not only supporting school improvement across 7 boroughs but also bringing back innovation and best practice to Elmhurst. We

Our pupils master the basics well, e.g. 97% passed the phonics screening check and 97% attained expected or higher in the KS2 SATs Maths tests in 2019. Our pupis are excellent at cricket and have been Newham and Essex champions for several years in succession.

have also forged powerful partnerships across our Multi Academy Trust (New Vision Trust), bringing out our collective strengths. The way that we teach maths, 5 years on since we first introduced teaching for mastery in 2015, has been transformative for staff, pupis and parents. This has taken pesistence, single-minded focus and a real culture change and the huge number of visitors who are attracted to our provision comment on our students’ deep understanding of maths. We have a philosophy that our school schould channel best practice from a wide range of sources, including learning from the private sector. Our year-long Shakespeare programme for instance is one of our

successful initiatives, and is fully incusive, having supported pupils with SEN to develop confidence.

Are there any pupils achievements that you would like to mention?

Elmhurst pupils debate and win national competitions - we were Debatemate national champions 2018 and national runners up in 2019. and East London champions. Our Teaching School leads the East London Speechmaking competition and the East London Debating league for 18 schools .

Education ministers inspired by visit to Nelson Primary School Nelson Primary School

Nelson Primary School was the school given the honourable task of hosting this global event in response to their pioneering work with the British Council’s Connecting Classroom Project, as well as their excellent National results. Nick Gibb, Minister for school standards, visited Nelson Primary School in Newham with a group of Ministers from Zimbabwe and Ethiopia, along with representatives from the DfE, British Council, DFID and the Education Development Trust. The visit provided an opportunity for the Minister to show-case the British school system to the visitors who are interested in educational reforms. Nelson pupils and staff welcomed the international delegates and were able to demonstrate how they have raised standards, in both the curriculum and school leadership. The visitors also

heard how the school is leading the way with work by a group of schools in London and Kenya with the DFID and British Council funded Connecting Classrooms through Global Learning programme. Nelson were also able to share their recent success in receiving the International School Award. As one visitor tweeted, ’impressive school partnership with Kenya showcased how global learning adds value to

the curriculum and children’s world knowledge’. The pupils were commended on their excellent behaviour and the group enjoyed a tour of the school and a phonics lesson, before a question/ answer session with the school leadership team, led by the Head Teacher, Fiona Cullen. The visitors were ‘blown away’ by their experience and concluded their visit with lots of information to take ‘home’.

Soofia Amin has been an ESOL lecturer since 2000 and has worked in Adult education for the past 13 years in Newham. She has been teaching a variety of levels in ESOL and has been involved in developing assessments. Currently Soofia is working at Kensington Primary. She joined the school in 2014 and leads on EAL, Mid-phase Admission and Community Engagement. Her role includes managing the mid-phase process, ensuring provision for EAL pupils is effective and that all EAL pupils are making good to outstanding progress. She also ensures parents have the support needed at school to help their children with their education. This is provided through maths, literacy and parenting courses. Kensington Primary has a high mobility rate and over 90% of mid-phase admissions are from abroad. Their Ofsted report in 2016 cited: “The large numbers of pupils, who join the school at different times of year, often with very little English, make rapid progress. This is because the support for pupils who speak English as an additional language is superb. These pupils become fluent readers and writers and are able to tackle the same work as their peers within 11 months of starting school. For example, the winner and runner-up in a debating competition with local schools were both non-English speakers when they started at Kensington Primary.” Inspection report: Kensington Primary School, 12th—13th July 2016 To find out more or book on to the specific course please contact: noori.khanom@ttlt.academy Access to the network group, plus two training sessions is £249.
