FIRST LEGO League Challenge Paulette Watson Academy Achievers

On the 25th of January 2020, Academy Achievers hosted the FIRST LEGO League tournament in Newham. Academy Achievers’ mission is to equip children and young people through relevant and rigorous technological content, to be innovative, creative individuals, by developing a positive attitude to learning through critical computational thinking skills needed to solve problems in today’s world. FIRST LEGO League is a global science and technology challenge for 9 to 16-year-olds which sees more than 310,000 young people in 38,800 teams, from 100 countries, come together to develop their STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills. The event, held at Chobham Academy, counted 6 teams of to 10 pupils each, competing in a series of innovative,

project-based robotics and teamwork led challenges. The primary schools that participated in the competition included Maryland, Godwin, Dersingham and Manor. The event was sponsored by the David Family Foundation, giving the opportunity to provide each school with a LEGO Mindstorms robot. These awards were presented to the following schools: • Robot Design Award – Maryland Primary – Robot name: BatBot • Robot Performance Award - Godwin Junior - LegodWinners • Innovation Project Award - Manor Primary (team 2) • Core Values Awards - Manor Primary

The winner for the Regional FIRST LEGO League Champion Awards went to: Dersingham Primary – Dersi_Coders. They will go on to compete with all champion teams from England and Wales on Saturday 22nd February 2020 in Bristol. The host behind this amazing event is Paulette Watson, WinTrade 2019 winner in the Women in Engineering category, which recognises “consistent integrity and progressive thinking” within the engineering sector. When asked about the competition she said:“FIRST LEGO League enables children and young people to appreciate the opportunities that STEM has to offer. They are able to acquire these basic concepts while making discoveries, using computational thinking and

being creative all at the same time. We are definitely equipping them with the necessary skills to be ready for a technological world”. Paulette has an incredible knowledge of all the challenges that our pupils have to face on a daily basis within the UK school system, and she is using it to shape a new generation of STEM leaders and ambassadors, especially within hard to reach and vulnerable communities. Her fight against the stereotype that women can’t have a career in the scientific field is leading her to the next project #BeMe, which aims to raise 1 million BME girls aspiration levels in Science Technology Engineering Math related careers.

8 other schools have joined the project and will make lasting partnerships with other schools in the same area. The project is the foundation of our commitment to preparing the children for adulthood. The learning has been from both sides. Our annual Spring Festival stemmed from one of the visits. We spend a week outside regular lessons celebrating with a choral speaking competition, recitals from all our musicians either in solo performances or together with the 40 strong symphony orchestra and wind band. It is also a showcase for our five choirs (perhaps something else that is unusual) each choir EYFS, KS1, Junior, Senior and staff

choir sing by themselves and then all together. Our school is so big, it is unusual for everyone to meet together. One of the times we do this is for World Peace Day - we meet together with the parents in the playground and sing “No Wars Will Stop Us Singing”. It is a very moving experience for the whole community, (representing all the continents), to be joining together for the same goal of World Peace.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role at Nelson? I love talking to children about their learning, hearing about how they have overcome difficulties in order to achieve

something and how proud they are. A group of children were invited to talk to the Board of Governors about how their investment into reading was impacting on them. They were asked very deep and challenging questions and were so articulate in their response – it epitomised why I love what I do. One of our house captains, a boy with ASD, selected by his peers, was chosen to meet and greet the Global Teacher of the year, Peter Tabichi – I was so proud listening to him talking so eloquently about global trade and its environmental footprint.

What are your future ambitions for the school? To continue to build the foundations for a successful education, to enable each child to discover the joy of learning, to help them to fulfil every aspect of their potential and to encourage their growth into effective and confident citizens, ready to play their part in the world and their community.

What would you say sets Nelson apart from other schools? Despite it’s size, the lovely family feel of the school,

where children are happy and flourishing and the staff don’t want to leave. Our specialism in singing and our commitment to global learning.

Are there any pupil achievements that you would like to mention? This year our end of Key Stage 2 results were the highest they have ever been but achievements for us go much further: Three of our children have become the Mayor of London’s Music Scholars, another a British taekwondo champion. Our senior choir performed with Newham Music at the Royal Albert Hall. Onjali Rauf, Blue Peter Book Prize winner, is an ex- pupil of our school – Nelson – is the school the “the Boy at the Back of the Class” went to.

Are there any upcoming events or programmes that you would like the wider community to be aware of? We are very excited that Nelson Primary School can continue working

with the British Council on the Connecting Classrooms through Global Learning Project. This year the joint project will be based around the Sustainable Development Goal number 13 – Climate action. We are convinced that this can benefit all the pupils from Nelson

and St Joseph’s Combined Academy; not only to address the climate issues but by the development of positive attitudes towards diversity and cultural difference. We are committed to preparing the pupils at Nelson to live and work in a global economy.

Essex Primary Pupils Visit Dublin, Ireland Essex Primary School

Last week (beginning 27th January), five pupils from Essex Primary School visited St Mary’s Primary School in Dublin, Ireland as part of the Erasmus project called ‘Unblocking Limits Together’. The aim of the project is to learn about social inclusion and diversity. Upholding

these two values is crucial in modern Britain and in particular, our vastly diverse city of London. The school collaborated with five schools from European countries; the countries involved were Spain, Italy, Romania, Greece and our host

country, the Republic of Ireland. The host school was very welcoming and supported our pupils in understanding the active role they play in society. Over the week, the pupils also further developed their social skills, creativity to complete tasks and perseverance.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS

To promote the empowerment of these pupils and allow them to recognise the ability they have to participate actively in society, they created some superb posters to raise awareness for some of the causes campaigned for by the ‘global goals’ organisation. These included good health and wellbeing, gender equality and affordable and clean energy. All pupils continued to navigate the five languages, by working together to make videos about inclusion based on the story ‘Something Else’ by Kathryn Cave; there are certainly some future Oscar winners amongst this group of pupils as some of the performance skills on display were brilliant.

The pupils also took part in an international food festival which displayed another way in which they can unblock limits. The whole school community had the opportunity to taste food from a large number of different countries that were all displaying their amazing cuisines. No food was the same and not everything was to everyone’s taste,

ISSUE 30 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST

but it did not stop people communicating - instead it created a positive and social atmosphere in which all the different countries and cultures were made to feel honoured. On one of the days, the pupils even had the opportunity to learn some Irish traditional céilí dancing. Everyone was impressed with how quickly they picked up the steps. They finished the week by creating some really interesting and insightful podcasts about ‘what makes you, you’. They are already looking forward to the next phase of the project which takes place in Greece. However, our pupils at Essex Primary School cannot wait for May, when all of the schools will visit us and our fantastic school!

Coronavirus : Information for Schools/Educational Settings There is currently an outbreak of a novel coronavirus with the focus in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. On 31 January 2020 the UK Chief Medical Officers raised the risk to the public from low to moderate. This permits the government to plan for all eventualities. The risk to individuals in the UK has not changed at this stage.

Situation in the UK Two patients in England have tested positive for coronavirus. As of 5th February, a total of 468 UK tests have concluded, of which 466 were confirmed negative and 2 positive. If more cases are confirmed in the UK, it will be announced as soon as possible by the Chief Medical Officer of the affected country. The majority of cases report mild illness and symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, chest tightness or shortness of breath.

Advice for parents/guardians You should not be unduly worried about the possibility of your children catching the Coronavirus. There is no reason why your children should not continue to attend their early years, school or further education setting as normal. Public Health England recognises that some families or children may be planning to travel to China during the forthcoming half term period. If so, please refer to the FCO’s latest travel advice via the link above. Public Health England advise any students or visitors to the school who are unwell AND have visited Wuhan City or Hubei Province, China in the last 14 days, to seek medical advice from NHS 111 or by phoning their GP for advice, detailing their travel history.

Students and staff who have returned from Wuhan City or Hubei Province in the last 14 days are advised to: • stay indoors and avoid contact with other people as you would with other flu viruses • call NHS 111 to inform them of your recent travel to the city Please request they follow this advice even if they do not have symptoms. We are asking people to take simple, common-sense steps to avoid close contact with other people as much as possible, like they would with other flu viruses. This means remaining at home for 14 days after arriving from Wuhan and not going to work, school or public areas. Where possible, you should avoid having visitors to your home, but it’s ok for friends, family or delivery drivers to drop off food. Students and staff who have returned from elsewhere in mainland China (including Taiwan, but not Macao or Hong Kong) in the last 14 days do not need to self-isolate if they do not have symptoms; but if they become unwell during the 14 days after leaving China they are advised to self-isolate and call NHS 111 or their GP for advice, detailing their travel history. Public Health England would encourage you to remind all staff and students of the importance of good hygiene practice. Coughing and sneezing should be into tissues that are promptly disposed of in bins. Hands should be washed with soap and water or using an alcohol hand rub, even if hands are visibly clean. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) are now advising against ALL travel to Hubei Province, and against all but essential travel to mainland China (not including Hong Kong and Macao). Anyone travelling to China should remain vigilant and check the latest travel advice on GOV.UK. Minister of State Praises Curwen Primary for Top 3% Progress Scores Curwen Primary School

Curwen Primary School in Plaistow, Newham have received a letter of congratulations from Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP, the Minister of State for School Standards, praising their outstanding end of key stage progress scores. The results were published on 13th December, and showed scores of 3.3, 4.4 and 5.5 in reading, writing and maths respectively, placing the Plaistow school amongst the top 3% of schools in the country. Nick Gibb’s letter, addressed to Paul Harris, Curwen’s Executive Headteacher, said, “Thank you for your work in continuing the drive towards higher academic standards, and congratulations again to you and your staff for your commitment and success.” Children in schools across the country are assessed in reading, writing and maths at the end of both key stage 1 (at age 7) and key stage 2 (at age 11). The progress measure, introduced in 2016, is a

value added measure which compares schools’ results with those of other schools with pupils at similar starting points. This type of progress measure rewards schools for making progress with all of their pupils, whether they are low, middle or high attainers. Scores are based around 0. A score of 0 means pupils make average progress, a positive score means pupils on average do better at KS2 and a negative score means pupils

ISSUE 30 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST

on average do worse at KS2 as those with pupils of similar starting points nationally. Kate Mansfield, Curwen’s Head of School was delighted with her pupils’ achievements. She said, “We are very proud to have received a letter of congratulations from the Minister of State for School Standards. This is a testament to all of the hard work of our staff, families and – most importantly - our amazing students.”

PROGRESSION IN PRIMARY SCIENCE The new Ofsted framework recognises that good primary science happens when the curriculum develops children’s knowledge progressively, drawing on and extending from what has already been learned. In Science, the content knowledge builds towards the big ideas: key concepts which underpin scientists’ understanding of the world. We will explore this progression through a range of practical and paper-based activities from the disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology. This course will support both subject knowledge and understanding of curriculum progression in Primary Science over two sessions (one whole day and one half day).

Soofia Amin has been an ESOL lecturer since 2000 and has worked in Adult education for the past 13 years in Newham. She has been teaching a variety of levels in ESOL and has been involved in developing assessments. Currently Soofia is working at Kensington Primary. She joined the school in 2014 and leads on EAL, Mid-phase Admission and Community Engagement. Her role includes managing the mid-phase process, ensuring provision for EAL pupils is effective and that all EAL pupils are making good to outstanding progress. She also ensures parents have the support needed at school to help their children with their education. This is provided through maths, literacy and parenting courses. Kensington Primary has a high mobility rate and over 90% of mid-phase admissions are from abroad. Their Ofsted report in 2016 cited: “The large numbers of pupils, who join the school at different times of year, often with very little English, make rapid progress. This is because the support for pupils who speak English as an additional language is superb. These pupils become fluent readers and writers and are able to tackle the same work as their peers within 11 months of starting school. For example, the winner and runner-up in a debating competition with local schools were both non-English speakers when they started at Kensington Primary.” Inspection report: Kensington Primary School, 12th—13th July 2016 To find out more or book on to the specific course please contact: noori.khanom@ttlt.academy Access to the network group, plus two training sessions is £249.
