Remote Learning: An End to Snow Days? Stewart Kiddell Business Development Manager The Education Space
The pandemic has seen a fundamental change in the way education has been delivered in the UK for the past year. Whilst some schools or education establishments have delivered lessons remotely for some time, the mainstream education system was all about face-to-face lessons, with ratios ranging anywhere from 1 to 1 up to 1 to 35. In the past year we have seen lessons delivered through websites or Google Classroom using worksheets and resources, lessons delivered through Google Meet or Zoom, all while schools remained open with smaller cohorts of keyworker and vulnerable children. The guidance on how and when the learning was to be delivered was minimal at best which resulted in every school or trust creating their own versions and delivering learning in the best way they could. It is a true credit to the teaching profession that people who have never had to deliver lessons in any way other than face-to-face, in front of a classroom of children, were suddenly delivering lessons remotely with parents sitting in, looking and listening to everything that was said or done. We have all experienced that moment when someone is watching you type and suddenly
your fingers take on a life of their own and you mistype every word and even get the correction wrong. Having someone sit and watch everything you are doing is very unnerving even for a short while. Teachers have been enduring this for months with no prior warning and very little training, if any. It’s one thing to have a peer review and feedback on a lesson to help you improve but it’s quite another to have a parent who has never taught doing the same thing. The sheer effort and success of home learning rests with each individual that has had to adapt and deliver in a way they would never have expected when they were completing teacher training. So here’s to each and every one of you! As a parent to two children, who has had to adapt to home learning, I can honestly say we are delighted to have our children back with the professionals. Without you our children would be the first generation that learned lessons based on what mum or dad could find on the internet (I’m still not certain what a subordinate clause is or bus stop method). With children back where they belong, we begin to look ahead to the future and how the last year may have lasting effects on how we deliver education moving forward. With the DfE making it mandatory to publish

home learning on school websites, (just as we were starting to look towards the future without Covid or remote learning), it begs the question is it here to stay? If we put to one side the potential impact on teachers’ workloads, mental health and wellbeing then sure, we can see some benefits of having remote learning on the website at all times. However, staff working at schools have had to put their health and those they live with and care about at risk by continuing to work during this past year, with the children of people who are on the front line, who are most likely to be exposed to Covid. Having access to remote learning at all times will require teachers to adapt lessons for online learning. Whilst I can see this will help people with medical conditions that prevent them from attending school every day, this is a relatively small number and schools already adapt to those situations. It feels rather like the only thing it is likely to put a stop to is everyone’s favourite snow day. With online learning there is no need to have a day off, we just revert to remote learning until the snow has thawed. As someone who is still very much a big kid at heart, I find it incredibly hard to believe that we would potentially deprive future generations of the fabled snow day. Waking up to find your parents listening to the radio, desperately hoping not to hear your school’s name listed as being closed, whilst you desperately hope that your school name would be read out, the anticipation nearly killing you as you shush your sibling in case you miss it. Then that moment when you hear your school mentioned and you jump, scream and hug the sibling who, only a moment ago, you were trying to suffocate to stop them making noise (presumably they licked your hand to get you to remove it from their face). Knowing that today was not a day for school work but actually a day for making a snowman (or half making it before descending into a snowball fight). Playing

with children you don’t normally play with, so you can have a giant snowball fight, someone calling a pause so your elderly neighbour could pass on their way to the shop, only for her to get in a cheeky shot at you. Ending the day frozen solid, in soaking wet clothes and exhausted while mum makes hot chocolates with cream and marshmallows. Snow days are the stuff of legend!! Remote learning has certainly been vital this past year and including technology in the curriculum is going to grow in importance as the years roll by, but let’s not deprive children of that sacred snow day! As we have grown older, we may have started to find the snow frustrating or inconvenient but we all got into education to make a difference to the children of this world, let’s not forget what made a difference to our lives when we were young. It’s always the memories of those great days that didn’t come around very often. Remote learning is a phenomenal tool that will greatly benefit the education sector, however, let’s not sacrifice life experience and staff well-being in order to deliver it. Non-profit aims to inspire one million black and minority ethnic girls into STEM Academy Achievers
Academy Achievers, a non-profit set up to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds is raising £16,750 to help 1 million Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) girls enter the field of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) related careers. Black people make up 13% of the population in London, but only 3% of the technology industry, (according to research done by the Evening Standard 2019 and more recently BSC The Chartered Institute for IT 2020). The campaign known as the #BeMe project is seeking £16,750 worth of start-up capital as an initial investment to help implement a strategic marketing campaign. The investment will go towards launching a podcast in February 2021. The girls on the programme will have the
opportunity to network with prominent black, female leaders in tech to learn about their careers and create an online mentoring platform that will equip them for the world of work. Paulette Watson, Managing Director of Academy Achievers, says: “Black and minority ethnic women are still heavily underrepresented across STEM industries. Without a stronger global commitment to diversity and inclusion, companies will continue to miss out on — or lose — talent that could bolster their business performance and ultimately their profit margins. Our mission is to create a pipeline of STEM opportunities for these girls, helping the ecosystem become more inclusive and supportive of underrepresented groups and communities.”

The #BeMe campaign is fully aligned to the UN’s Sustainable Development goals, contributing to five of the 17 in total by helping achieve gender equality and empower black women in technology through five pillars of focus: Education; Entrepreneurialism; Innovation: Mental Health (Well being) and Social Inclusion.

Kensington Primary School named Primary School of the Year in live televised appearance Kensington Primary School
Kensington Primary School in Newham wins a prestigious Gold Teaching Award. Selected from thousands of nominations, Kensington Primary School has been named Primary School of the Year, winning a Pearson National Teaching Gold Award. The team from Kensington Primary School was presented with their Gold Award for Making a Difference – Primary School of the Year on The One Show on BBC One. This focus on celebrating teaching comes at a time when the country has truly recognised the vital work that schools do on a daily basis. Now, these award-winning school staff will be honoured on a national platform. Kensington Primary School has gone from being judged as Requires Improvement by Ofsted in 2014 to being Outstanding in 2016. This was
only the start of the journey, as the school has gone from strength to strength, developing a curriculum that encompasses academic success, pastoral care and healthy living for all its pupils. A founding school of the Tapscott Learning Trust, Kensington believes in

partnership to provide the best for its children. At the centre of its incredibly diverse community, Kensington provides food parcels for families, offered access to its playground during lockdown so children could play outside, and brings in physical health initiatives to combat the borough’s obesity challenges.

our thanks, to praise their endeavours and to tell their stories.” Rod Bristow, President of Pearson UK, said: “Congratulations to Kensington Primary School and all of our wonderful Gold Award winners on their success. They have all displayed the most fantastic dedication to this superb profession and truly deserve to have their hard work recognised in this way.
Many of the Pearson National Teaching Award Gold Award winners, chosen from thousands of nominations, will receive national acclaim for their incredible work supporting students across the country. Each award winner has repeatedly gone above and beyond their role to change the lives of their students and help them move towards a brighter future. The Pearson National Teaching Awards, which are now in their 22nd year, are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they teach. Mr Ben Levinson, Headteacher at Kensington Primary School said: “Wow! This is a once in a lifetime moment. Everyone - children, our team, parents, governors, The Tapscott Learning Trust, our partners - are on cloud nine and I don’t think we’ll be coming back down until well
into 2021. Thank you!” Paul Harris, CEO of the Tapscott Learning Trust said: “I was completely and utterly overjoyed at the recognition that Kensington received on Friday evening, being awarded Primary School of the Year. This is testament to incredible team and community work everyone has played their part over the years, and they couldn’t deserve it more” Michael Morpurgo, celebrated author and former Children’s Laureate, and President of the Teaching Awards Trust, said: “We have long known the impact that one superb teacher can have, the young people they can inspire and the lives they can change. But this past year has shown us all, more than perhaps ever before, the true value of teachers. “No one becomes a teacher for the applause it brings, and indeed too often it can feel a thankless role. That is why this coming week is so important. It is our opportunity to show

“We want staff in schools and colleges across the country to know much deeply we appreciate the work they do and the impact they have. More than ever before we have gained a real understanding of the incredible work school and college staff do every day, and we are delighted to have had this week celebrating them. They deserve nothing less.” Lorraine Langham, Chief Executive of Future First, the education charity which sponsored this award, said: “Kensington Primary School has achieved something very special by winning this prestigious award in such a competitive and impressive field. It just goes to show how much wonderful teaching is going on across the country despite the terribly difficult circumstances as a result of the pandemic. “Future First’s vision is for a world where a young person’s start in life does not limit their future. Our work helps schools harness the power of alumni networks, which can really motivate and inspire students and keep them engaged with their learning at this difficult time”.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has celebrated the exceptional performance of Manorfield Primary School in Tower Hamlets as part of his Schools for Success programme. The school has been honoured for its commitment to reducing educational inequality and attaining exceptional results for children previously struggling academically. Manorfield Primary School has been awarded a certificate for exceptional work in sharing good practice and helping to improve education for all Londoners. Created in 2017, the Schools for Success programme was formed to enhance the support given to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The programme acknowledges primary and secondary schools that prioritise progress for their lowest attaining pupils, are excelling in their performance overall and sharing

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’d like to congratulate the staff of Manorfield Primary School for their exceptional work. We created Schools for Success to recognise the positive impact that teachers, headteachers, teaching assistants, support staff and governors are making every day to support students and reduce inequalities, and this school’s commitment to being supportive and inclusive sets a great example. Get involved in this year's Newham RE competition! In 2021, instead of our usual visit a place of worship competition we are glad to announce we are having a poetry competition. We are looking for poetry from pupils’ work in Religious Education inspired from their experience
from lockdown and life. The deadline is Friday 28th May 2021 to enter up to ten pieces of poetry from each school. Poems should be sent to claire.clinton@rematters.co.uk and then members of Newham SACRE will judge winners for EYFS,
KS1, KS2 and KS3.
There are many exciting ways RE and poetry can connect, and so we hope in this extraordinary year this gives schools something doable as a focus. World Poetry Day is on 21 March 2021, and this gives schools the opportunity of making some RE themes their whole school focus. Potential themes for poems reflecting on lockdown and life! •
Journeys. Were they any significant journeys you made as a family, as a school or as a religious or nonreligious community during lockdown or over the summer? To the beach, a significant location, a school ceremony, a place of pilgrimage? Why are these journeys significant? What do you think you or others get from taking these journeys or pilgrimages? What places are significant to you around your school or neighbourhood? Are any of those places sacred places?
•
Questions, questions. RE is all about questions, and this theme invites poetry that asks, explores and wrestles with ‘ultimate’ big questions. Who? What? Where? How? Why? Why not? Especially through lockdown what questions did pupils find themselves considering?
•
Where is God? In lockdown atheists, agnostics and believers in God might all respond to this by expressing their sense of the search or the find. Where’s God or where was God during the pandemic?
•
Mystery of life. This theme invites pupils to express their own ideas about the puzzles, mysteries and imponderables of life. So much we don’t know, so much that inspires, so much that is mysterious, so much that might make you rejoice or grieve about life ... Where to begin?
Newham SACRE with RE Matters will award prizes to the best young poets in Newham, and their schools will receive a prize. We will publish the results of the competition and a selection of winning and commended entries to all schools. Schools may send up to ten poems for judges’ consideration. Some internal school-based judging is usually advisable to select those submitted for the Borough competition. Subject staff in English as well as RE are a good source for judges, as are governors with an interest in this area. You can use a writing frame to help pupils, this must be sent to judges so they are aware of what support was given to pupils and be able to judge fairly. Poems should not be longer than 30 lines.

WELL WORTH SHARING... Pupils across our community produce outstanding work which we love to share. Please send anything you would like featured to: newsletter@theeducationspace.co.uk
My “What I’ll Bring” List I would take a one-of-a-kind journal of silver pages (with an irreplaceable pen of emerald ink) that makes whatever I write or draw come true. I would take a portal, that is disguised as a casual jock hat, so I can travel wherever I wish in a dangerous situation. I would take an infinitely powered torch, which shines with a diamond light, so I can see in the darkest nights or the narrowest caves as well as create my own trail. I would take a portable chair, which can hold any weight and grows to a recommended size, so I can take a quick rest without getting my bottom dirty or hold any heavy loot. I would take a pair of magical glasses which can help me ‘see’ the solution to every problem. I would take a pack of miniature seeds, which are camouflaged as the beginning of a sunflower but can really grow whatever anyone wishes or solve any bad situations with just a drop of blood. I would take a tub of eternal glue that has the strength of a tornado so I can keep my predators still without having to worry and stick down any escaping prey. I would take a lie detecting rubber shaped as a hand, which shows a thumbs up for TRUTH and a thumbs down for LIE, so if I make any friends, I can catch them in the act. I would take an always filled lunch box, that fills itself up with my favourite meal every time I do the same, so whenever I crave a bit of a delicious snack, I’d immediately look up to it without hesitation.
