What is Web Accessibility and Why Does it Matter? Tania D’Arcy The Education Space
Web accessibility is the practice of making sure a website can be accessed and used by as many people as possible. Having a lovely website that showcases your school is essential these days and you should feel confident that anyone can visit and enjoy your website regardless of visual, motor, auditory, or cognitive ability.
About 15% of the world’s population, over 1 billion people, live with some form of disability ~ World Health Organisation
These days, most web designers make sure to build their websites so that they will function well on different devices such as computers, tablets and mobile phones (which is known as responsiveness) however, an element of web design that is often overlooked or not covered in great detail is accessibility. Schools are the standard-bearers for inclusivity, often making adaptations for pupils or parents to ensure everyone has access to the same standard of education.
ISSUE 43 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
At the Education Space we want to help our schools to ensure they do not overlook their website when it comes to inclusivity. We feel it is our ethical duty to improve accessibility where possible and have been upskilling our web developers to help with this, meaning we can deliver websites that your school can proudly share with everyone in your community no matter their ability or individual needs. We have also made around 50 changes to our own website and here are just a few elements that we have been working on that you can review on your website to see how inclusive you are.
If your school has Web Support from The Education Space, then we have already audited your website and made the necessary changes in the background to improve accessibility at no additional cost.

Visual Impairment
Worldwide, there are approximately 300 million people with colour blindness.
Visual impairment can refer to people who are partially or completely blind as well as those with low vision or colour blindness. You may not personally know someone with a severe visual impairment but how many people do you know who have below average vision? Eyesight commonly deteriorates with age and with so many elderly people using technology to keep in touch with family and friends or to do shopping (especially during the pandemic), it is important that websites are easy to navigate and content can be zoomed to make it larger for those with below average vision.
~ Colour Blind Awareness
Websites can be tested with a basic screen reader to make sure that all the important information is read out in a logical order and that nothing crucial is skipped. A website’s colour scheme should also be checked to see how it would look to people with colour blindness or those who have trouble viewing content with low contrast.
Globally the number of people of all ages who are visually impaired is estimated to be 285 million ~ World Health Organisation
For those with blindness or severe visual impairments, screen reading software can be used to read the content of a website to the user.

Check your site Try adjusting the text size in your browser using the View menu or settings and increase the Zoom to 200%. Is all the text still readable? Has any of the text been cut off? Does the layout still display in a logical fashion?

Impaired motor function Some people have disabilities concerning movement, such as physical issues including paralysis and limb loss, or disorders that lead to weakness or loss of limb control. Reduced motor function can also be an issue for the elderly, those with arthritis and people with injuries that make it harder for them to use a mouse. In cases like this, the keyboard may be used to navigate a website instead of the mouse. Web developers can add functionality to their websites to allow people with impaired motor function to use a keyboard to navigate the site as well as other helpful features such as a ‘Skip to content’ link that appears when the website first loads and a user presses the Tab key. This can help people to skip the menus and other features at the top of the site and go straight to the content area which saves time and a lot of key presses. A visual indicator (such as a border) should appear to show the user what element the keyboard press is currently focused on. The order that the elements of the site are selected when navigating with the
ISSUE 43 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
keyboard is important and should follow a logical structure. This will also assist people who use speech recognition software to navigate websites by voice.
Check your site Open your website and try using the Tab key to move between menus, buttons and forms; use the arrow keys to scroll up and down; use the Enter key to ‘click’ a button that you are focused on. Are you able to navigate the page from top to bottom without missing any information? Is there a ‘Skip to Content’ link that appears when the site first loads and you press Tab for the first time? Is there a clear visual indicator (such as a border) to show you what element you are currently focused on?

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS
Cognitive impairment Cognitive impairment can refer to intellectual disabilities that can severely limit a person’s capabilities or common learning disorders such as dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Content is usually controlled by the website owner, not the web designer however, your web designer should be able to advise you on good practice when it comes to adding content to your site.
Check your site Is it easy to navigate your website and find information? Do you have pages with a lot of unbroken blocks of text? Consider adding visual elements that will break up the text such as subheadings, lists and images.
Some people with these disorders need to, or prefer to, use screen reading software as do some people with visual impairments. This is another reason to make sure a website will function properly when read out to a user.
The number of individuals with dyslexia in the UK is around 10% of the population ~ British Dyslexia Association
Other things that should be considered for people with cognitive impairments or learning difficulties are to keep consistency throughout the design and make navigating the site straightforward. There are many recommendations for how to layout content so that it is easy to read and uses plain language.
Making sure your website meets the basic accessibility standards is not only good practice but is the law in some places. We all need to do what we can to make the world a more inclusive place for everyone, simply because it’s the right thing to do. If you would like advice on accessibility or an audit for your website, please contact us: brand@theeducationspace.co.uk

Year 6 Hip-Hop class trains with Southampton FC Ayman - Year 6 Hip-Hop class Gallions Primary School
Gallions Primary School was one of the 16 schools who participated in a special event, hosted by Virgin Media and Southampton. In this event, 11 of the starting players of Southampton performed training drills and the 16 schools got the opportunity to train alongside them. Whilst we were training we had the opportunity to listen to the Manager and Assistant Manager who were explaining how these drills help in real life game situations. Hip-Hop were the lucky class to participate in this event in year 6, not only that, we had been kindly given free shirts by Southampton - which were worth £40. Thank you Southampton FC and Virgin Media! Once the lesson started, the hosts kindly introduced themselves to us and

brought in the Manager. The first activity we completed was Rock Paper Scissors, and whoever lost the game had to do a little run to the end of the hall and come back, while the partner had to perform a stretch. This was enjoyable and everyone sounded like they were having fun. Not long after, they showed us a drill where they performed a skill past a mannequin and then had to pass the ball to the person on the other side. As we didn’t have mannequins, we had to resort to little cones that we went past, and passed to the other person. Here we learnt the importance of changing direction with a ball. The hosts brought us back so that we could listen to some of the players. We heard from Theo Walcott and James

Ward-Prowse. Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to ask Theo Walcott why he celebrated when scoring against Arsenal, however as an Arsenal super fan I was still excited that I got to see an ex Arsenal player! After the talk, we got to do the final drill where we had to get past a person and try to shoot in the goal. It was really good to see lots of different children volunteer to be the goal-keeper - even some of the girls volunteered! This was probably the best part of the lesson. During the time we were doing this, the hosts put the camera on the footballers, doing the exact same thing as us. It’s amazing knowing that I was performing the same drills as professional footballers!
competition. No surprises as to who won! Thank you Southampton for giving us free shirts and the opportunity to take part in a training session, we really appreciate this. I hope one day I can become a professional footballer and do the same for other children. Click the image below to see the Virgin Media Football Academy video on YouTube.
To finish the session, we had an opportunity to go head to head with all the professional players in a keep ups

Get involved in this year's Newham RE competition! In 2021, instead of our usual visit a place of worship competition we are glad to announce we are having a poetry competition. We are looking for poetry from pupils’ work in Religious Education inspired from their experience
from lockdown and life. The deadline is Friday 28th May 2021 to enter up to ten pieces of poetry from each school. Poems should be sent to claire.clinton@rematters.co.uk and then members of Newham SACRE will judge winners for EYFS,
KS1, KS2 and KS3.
There are many exciting ways RE and poetry can connect, and so we hope in this extraordinary year this gives schools something doable as a focus. World Poetry Day is on 21 March 2021, and this gives schools the opportunity of making some RE themes their whole school focus. Potential themes for poems reflecting on lockdown and life! •
Journeys. Were they any significant journeys you made as a family, as a school or as a religious or nonreligious community during lockdown or over the summer? To the beach, a significant location, a school ceremony, a place of pilgrimage? Why are these journeys significant? What do you think you or others get from taking these journeys or pilgrimages? What places are significant to you around your school or neighbourhood? Are any of those places sacred places?
•
Questions, questions. RE is all about questions, and this theme invites poetry that asks, explores and wrestles with ‘ultimate’ big questions. Who? What? Where? How? Why? Why not? Especially through lockdown what questions did pupils find themselves considering?
•
Where is God? In lockdown atheists, agnostics and believers in God might all respond to this by expressing their sense of the search or the find. Where’s God or where was God during the pandemic?
•
Mystery of life. This theme invites pupils to express their own ideas about the puzzles, mysteries and imponderables of life. So much we don’t know, so much that inspires, so much that is mysterious, so much that might make you rejoice or grieve about life ... Where to begin?
Newham SACRE with RE Matters will award prizes to the best young poets in Newham, and their schools will receive a prize. We will publish the results of the competition and a selection of winning and commended entries to all schools. Schools may send up to ten poems for judges’ consideration. Some internal school-based judging is usually advisable to select those submitted for the Borough competition. Subject staff in English as well as RE are a good source for judges, as are governors with an interest in this area. You can use a writing frame to help pupils, this must be sent to judges so they are aware of what support was given to pupils and be able to judge fairly. Poems should not be longer than 30 lines.
