The importance of First Aid Stewart Kiddell Business Development Manager The Education Space
The football world and many outside it were rocked recently when a 29 year old professional footballer (Christian Eriksen) collapsed on the pitch whilst suffering a cardiac arrest. It is hard enough to deal with a situation that requires first aid without having millions of people watching around the world and thousands watching in the stadium. Due to the brilliant initial reactions of Simon Kjaer the Danish Captain, providing first aid within seconds closely followed by the medical staff and defibrillator Christian Eriksen has been able to survive to tell the tale. Christian Eriksen is a physical specimen that is looked after by

fitness coaches, dietitians and medical teams that are at the very peak of their careers. So the fact this happened to him shows that no one is immune to potential issues. Ensuring you are able to deliver first aid could be the difference between saving a life and or losing a friend or colleague. Whilst undoubtedly having a medical team and defibrillator to hand played a huge part in this story being one of hope rather than tragedy, it cannot be underestimated the impact having someone that can immediately deliver first aid can have on someone’s chances. It can really be the difference between life and death.

Schools are excellent at ensuring they have enough first aid trained staff to protect all of the people within their organisations, however they may not always be the person that comes across the casualty first. With the vast majority of people in schools being children it is far more likely that a child will come into contact with a casualty before any adult or first aid trained member of staff. Since Sept 2020 First Aid has been a compulsory part of the PSHE curriculum in England. The Education Space partnering with Strong Roots Training are able to offer an all new Pupil First Aid programme that helps you to deliver your First Aid curriculum with no fuss or hassle.
Pupil First Aid Offer Our Pupil First Aid offer provides a two-step approach to delivering a comprehensive experience, helping to ensure you meet the PSHE requirements without adding additional burden to your staff. Our service is split between a fully prepared online lesson delivered with videos, worksheets and a full lesson plan for the teaching staff to simply oversee and support the delivery. Each year group will receive their own tailored lesson to ensure it meets the required elements of the PSHE curriculum. The second element is a whole day workshop (split into one hour for each year group) to deliver an interactive session lead by a First Aid Trainer providing hands on experience of key first aid activities including CPR, recovery position, managing bleeds and breaks. For more information or book your session for next academic year please do not hesitate to contact us at training@theeducationspace.co.uk or call 0208 249 6900 option 2

A Message to the United Nations St Luke’s Primary & Nursery School
St Luke’s chosen to speak out to other schools. Recently, the St Luke’s Primary and Nursery School received an email from the Government Cabinet Office (they support the British Prime Minister with his work) that informed us that this coming November the UK will be hosting the 26th UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland. This will be the 26th global meeting on the dangers of climate change and is called COP26 (Conference of the Parties). Ahead of this, Boris Johnson wanted to produce a short promotional film to let schools know about this event and to introduce some curriculum materials for all schools in the run-up. There are 32,770 schools in the United Kingdom and because of previous work we have done around ecology, the British Cabinet Office came to St. Luke’s in Canning Town to make a film! The climate talks will bring together heads of state, climate experts and campaigners to agree coordinated

action to tackle climate change. They asked our children about what they thought of climate change and had an assembly style talk in the outdoor classroom followed by a Q&A session and filmed some clips of the school. You will not be surprised to know that our children shone in the short film. The civil servants who came, Allegra Ruaridh (pictured) and Anil were blown away by the passion and articulacy of our children. Please follow the link below to check out this stunning promotional film. A Message to the United Nations

opportunities. The school offers outdoor learning, including a gardening programme, a specialist-cooking programme, and a wide range of educational visits.
Selected from thousands of nominations, Manorfield Primary School has been honoured as one of 102 Pearson National Teaching Silver Award winners across the country, and one of only five Award winners in their category. Manorfield Primary School was honoured with a Silver Award in The Award for Making a Difference - Primary School of the Year for their outstanding commitment to changing the lives of the children they work with every day.
Manorfield Primary School has now been shortlisted to win one of just 15 Gold Awards later in the year, in a programme which will be broadcast on the BBC. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the exceptional school staff who have worked wonders during an incredibly challenging time for educators across the country.
Over recent years Manorfield has created a vision for excellence and a no excuses culture, at the heart of the community. During the pandemic the school offered essential support to the local community, including operating a food-distribution programme to families and those from other local schools. Manorfield offers a creative, engaging curriculum and an innovative approach to learning, with a rich range of quality learning experiences, opening minds and offering children and their families exciting

The Silver Award winners are being honoured as part of the wider celebrations for ‘Thank a Teacher Day’, a national campaign to honour and recognise school staff for their incredible work. The celebrations follow new data which shows how the previous year’s lockdowns have significantly changed how families across the country view the role of teachers. New research from Parentkind and The Teaching Awards Trust highlights that three in four parents and carers have a newfound respect for the teaching profession following their experiences of remote learning during lockdown. 74.9% of survey respondents agreed or strongly agreed that they had more respect

for the work that teachers do following their family’s experiences of remote learning. The last year has seen a wealth of stories of teachers making care visits to vulnerable families, coming up with innovative ways of remote teaching, keeping their pupils settled by regularly checking in and even using their school sites for Covid-19 testing when classes did return to school. There has never been a better time to appreciate them and the vital work they do. The Pearson National Teaching Awards is an annual celebration of excellence in education, founded in 1998 by Lord Puttnam to recognise the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they work with. This year marks its 22nd year of celebrating, award-winning teachers, teaching assistants, headteachers and lecturers across the UK. Paul Jackson, Headteacher at Manorfield Primary School, said: We are incredibly proud to receive this award in recognition of all the school’s work in recent years. Our staff have worked hard to ensure that our children and families receive the very best education possible. I can’t thank our team enough for all they have done to make Manorfield into the great school it is today.”
are, but I hope they take this opportunity to reflect fondly on their success so far, and congratulate themselves and each other on this fine achievement. At PiXL, we were so impressed by their story, and we know they will continue to keep going the extra mile to provide a truly wonderful education to everyone who comes through their doors.”
Sir Michael Morpurgo, celebrated author and former Children’s Laureate, and President of the Teaching Awards Trust, said: “Thank a Teacher Day gives us all a chance - children, families, all of us - to pay tribute to those wonderful educators who change more lives than they will ever know. Today we say thank you to the teachers who have helped our young people navigate these most difficult of times, and who will continue to inspire countless young minds over the coming years.”
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said: “The hard work and dedication of teachers in schools, colleges and across the education sector during the pandemic has been inspiring, and while our teachers deserve the country’s recognition every year, this year’s Thank A Teacher Day is even more significant. The support they have provided children, young people and adults has been remarkable, and each and every one of us should be grateful for the part they have played over the past 18 months.
Rachel Johnson, CEO at PiXL, said: “Manorfield Primary School is a worthy award winner for their incredible efforts to support their students, their staff, and their local community, and it is only right we recognise their hard work. I know how humble teachers
“Congratulations to all the Silver Award winning educators, and every teacher who has gone above and beyond, inspiring and shaping our future generations to be the best they can be.”
