Passionate about striving for improvement Sarah Beaumont, Head of Governance at NPW – The Education Space, talks about governor development, governance reviews, and the passion of Governors over Zoom.
Sarah Beaumont, Head of Governance The Education Space
On a balmy evening in early September, I was scheduled to present my Governance Review report to a Governing Board who had invited me. I was unsure that the prospect of sitting in a Zoom meeting would triumph against enjoying the sunset during a surprising London mini-heatwave, but I was pleasantly surprised by the large turn-out. A Governance Review can be triggered in a number of ways. The external governance review framework was developed primarily to respond to Ofsted judgements; an inevitable follow-on from a damning report by OfSTED, which found leadership and management and particularly governance - to be inadequate in some way. It has also been a recommendation in the past by a local authority, keen to promote its own agenda of school improvement. But more and more, governance reviews are being invited by Governing Boards, as a healthy exercise to commission an independent view of their governance practice and audit their own effectiveness.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS
The purpose of an external review, as defined by the National Governance Association (NGA), is for an independent professional to review governance practice and to make recommendations for strengthening governance in the school. The Governance Review that I was presenting had included a range of different types of scrutiny: a review of the governing board’s documentation including a school website compliance check, observation of a governing board meeting, a facilitated self-review session for all governors and senior leaders, and a scoping session with the Chair, the Vice-Chair, and the Chair of the Finance Committee, resulting in a final report. All elements of the review had been undertaken during the Summer Term, which, for all intent and purposes, still had the full flavour of lockdown. Sadly, I was deprived of that whole experience of entering the school: the welcome, the signin, the curling visitor badge adhered to a jacket lapel, and the joy of walking along colourful corridors of dynamic displays, before actually shaking the hand of the Headteacher and the Chair of Governors with a smile. It was a shame to miss the feel of the school to put the review into context, and I also cannot wait to get back to the physical world to enjoy all those nonverbal interactions that are so important for building relationships. However, even though all meetings were virtual and all conversations were over the telephone, there was no mistaking the passion of the governors, which still shone through. And this particular Governing Board was passionate about striving for improvement. I know this because several Governors actually articulated this sentence during the review. The report I presented was detailed, and set out my own observations as well as capturing the words of the governors themselves during their own selfevaluations. I had added some pages of recommendations and a suggested action
ISSUE 47 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
plan at the end to help support next steps. But the report was not just a catalogue of things that could be done better or differently; absolutely not. It was also an observation of the strengths of governance at the school, that were self-evident. I concluded by pointing out that my recommendations were suggestions, my action plan a draft. It would be now for the Governing Board to determine their own journey and decide what was doable, what would be a ‘quick win’, and how they could develop their own effectiveness long-term. It was a nice way to spend a late summer evening, in the company of governors so committed to their school and their pupils, who were so obviously passionate about striving for improvement. If you would like to commission a Governance Review for your Board, please contact Sarah Beaumont, Head of Governance at The Education Space.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS
Surviving your first week as an ECT September is the official start month of your life as an ECT! Of course you have been in school in August to prep the classroom and for induction days in June and July – but this is when your contract as a newly qualified teacher starts.
Jasmin Choudhury Opogo
You will be feeling excited, anxious and nervous all at the same time. No need to do daily evaluations and keep evidence against the teaching standards. Lesson plans should be easier to write. Hopefully, you will have parallel teachers or other teachers in your department to support you with planning and resources. Now you will have a mentor who you can talk to openly and professionally and an ECT Induction mentor who will support and develop you using the teaching standards. The best part of this is that you are allowed to go it alone – you are the boss! There will be no teaching mentor looking over your shoulder and doing every-day checks. You will still be judged against the teaching standards – all teachers are, no matter how experienced you become. However, you will now have your own class of 30 pupils and your own classroom. Nothing beats that sense of freedom. You will surprise yourself when you hear the words, Mr or Ms So and So’s
ISSUE 47 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
class in assemblies or being greeted by eager parents. When you are bringing your class in from the playground or taking your first form session as a secondary teacher – you will pinch yourself and think, “Is this really me? Just last September, I was starting my teacher training course!” How time flies! The weekend before the start of school can be nerve wracking. Relax and try to do things that keep your mind off things. Most schools usually have one or two inset days. This is time for training, networking and getting things – “September ready” and prepared for the coming year! • •
Secondary schools use the first week to greet, in particular, Y12s into sixth form and also fresh faced, nervous but very excited Y7s. In primary schools, home visits for nurseries and Reception inductions will commence for 3 and 4- year olds. A busy time for all schools!

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS
The Night Before an Inset Day The night before the INSET day, sit down for half an hour and make a list of things you want to achieve and prioritise. There will be so many things you’ll want to do! Have your lunch prepared as the first day for ECTs can be daunting and before you know it – you have reached 5pm with no lunch! You don’t want to find yourself starving, exhausted and with a blistering headache. Have a planning folder with dividers and a note book. Most people have digital folders now – but somehow on inset days, staff seem to be given a plethora of information that does come in handy as time goes on.
The amount of times teachers can get stuck in the playground because they can’t enter the school building as they don’t have the pin or fob to the security gate is much more frequent than you realise!
It is also useful to set up an ECT folder where you can put your notes and observations. On the day of the INSET day, go in slightly early.
It just leads to behaviour issues and a loss of teaching and learning time.
You will see the familiar friendly faces that you met in the Summer term. Some you will have met if you came in during the late August prep.
Smile – the school chose you! You are worth it! Get to know staff and try to spend breaks and lunches in the staffroom. You will soon feel at home. Try to get as much done on the first INSET day. On the second inset day, if you have one, you want to leave school- the latest by 5pm. If you have only one inset day, it is crucial that your classroom is ready for teaching and learning. Pencil pots should be filled with pencils, exercise books with labels piled up ready to hand out and display boards backed. Your key headings and signs need to be up and should be a mixture of information using handwriting and print. Doing so will ensure that both you, parents and the children can get to know each other quickly. Check where your class will line up- if you are a primary teacher. Have a name badge yourself and double check that you have the all-important fob.
ISSUE 47 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
“…being a teacher is hard enough and you should not be on call 24/7” Another thing to check, certainly by the end of the first week – is what happens during fire drills. Try not to get caught up in too many long meetings – you are a busy person with things to do! You really don’t want to take things home to do! The night before you start teaching, go through your speech to the class, the schools’ safeguarding and behaviour policies and your own class rules and expectations. Think about how you will deal with a child who may be difficult from the start. Go through what lessons you will teach and put all these together on a clipboard. Spend only an hour doing this and then switch off. Have fun with loved ones and friends. Avoid looking at emails etc. especially if they are linked to your phone as they don’t allow you to relax. It might seem patronising or I am telling you to suck eggs – but in the moment, these things can be forgotten- especially when you are in charge of 30 children who may be boisterous from the start. Reflect, relax and be prepared for the first day!

WEB SUPPORT UPDATE The Education Space have been supporting school websites for over 16 years. Over the last 12 months the Web Support team have responded to an influx in support queries, ensuring websites have up to date online learning resources, home learning areas and clear, accessible parental communication. The team has processed over 7,000 queries and all within the SLA timeframe. Alongside this the team has completed a number of key projects as valueadd services to ensure your website is compliant, functional and meeting the latest standards.
Web Accessibility Project As a not-for-profit schools’ owned company we are continuously looking at ways of adding value for our member schools. Over the Easter break the Web team attended the latest training on Web Accessibility and has carried out a detailed review of The Education Space company websites. As a result over 50 changes were made to The Education Space website. This means our websites now meet the ‘AA’ web accessibility standard. On the back of this project the Web team has taken the initiative to review all our supported websites and have made the relevant changes over the summer term. You can read more about what we have done with accessibility in our article published in our newsletter and on our website: https://theeducationspace.co.uk/what-is-web-accessibility-and-why-does-it-matter

Cookie Plug-in Project During the summer term the cookie plugin used on our websites stopped being supported (this is a common issue with plugins added to websites which is why plugins need to be maintained and updated regularly). In order to ensure that every website we support remained compliant with the UK GDPR regulations, the team spent weeks updating all sites by adding a new cookie plugin.
Audit Project Over the summer holidays our team were busy completing an audit on each website we support. If your school is interested in an audit of your site, please get in touch. The audit is a 36 point check covering 5 key areas: 1.
Ofsted Compliance Check
2.
UK GDPR Compliance Check
