What an Honour! Newham Headteachers Receive Awards in Queen’s Birthday Honours Lorna Jackson, headteacher of Maryland Primary School has received an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for her services to education. She told the Newham Recorder: “I do of course feel very proud at being nominated and that my services to education are recognised on the Queen’s Honours List.” Lorna came to England from Jamaica at age 5 and started at Hartley School in East Ham in 1979, becoming one of the few black teachers in Newham at the time. She became deputy head of Maryland School in 1985 and headteacher in 2001. Lorna says she has no fear about boldly trialling educational projects which have then gone on to be embedded in schools, not just in Newham but nationally. Maryland was the first school in Newham to introduce Ruth Miskin’s reading programme in 2003, becoming one of only two international model schools in the country for the Read Write Inc. programme. She was also the founder of the Education4Change project calling for schools to fight racism through having courageous conversations as well as auditing their curriculum for representation and equality. Lorna is most proud of the school’s improved educational standards during her time in charge. For her, leadership is about instilling ambition and enhancing talents and believes her career has served as an inspiration for others.

Congratulations to Tom Canning, who received a CBE at this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to education. Tom joined Newham in 1990 as a borough wide unattached teacher. He was placed in St. Stephen’s Primary School and after a number of years became the deputy headteacher. In January 2000, Tom was appointed as headteacher of Godwin Junior School, followed 4 years later as headteacher at Tollgate Primary. Tom has supported many Newham schools over the years as a Local Authority School Improvement Partner. Tom is a National Leader of Education and works closely with the department of education to support local maintained schools and multi academy trusts who may find themselves in challenging circumstances. Tom is Chief Executive of The Boleyn Trust. Cleves, Monega, New City, Ravenscroft, Rosetta, Shaftesbury and Tollgate are Newham partner schools in the trust. The Clara Grant Primary School in Tower Hamlets is also a partner school. We all share an absolute passion for the celebration of diversity and inclusion in our schools.
Dr Julian Grenier, headteacher of Sheringham Nursery School and Children’s Centre since 2012, has been awarded a CBE Queen’s Birthday Honours. Julian is also director of East London Research School. He got a doctorate in education (EdD) from the UCL Institute of Education and has been working in early years for most of the last 3 decades (since 1995). Julian has published several books on early years, as well as writing for TES and for Nursery World. For DfE, he led on the revision of Development Matters and worked with Megan Pacey on the updated guidance for the Progress Check at Age 2. “I am humbled by this honour. From the first day I worked in a Sheffield nursery class, when a team of experienced nursery nurses took me under their wing, I’ve loved working in the early years. I’ve been very fortunate to work with many wonderful people over the years. I’d especially like to thank the team at Sheringham Nursery School and Children’s Centre, who work so hard every day to make a difference for the children, many from disadvantaged backgrounds. I’d also like to thank the community in Manor Park and Little Ilford for backing our work here. I love being a headteacher in Newham and am endlessly grateful to so many colleagues across schools, NPW and the local authority for the support they give me.”

Newham School Performs in the Jubilee Pageant Southern Road Primary School
Twenty four children and their parents from Southern Road Primary School participated in the procession at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant on Sunday 5th June 2022. It was a historic moment, one that will remain with everyone involved for years to come. Everyone without exception felt a sense of pride as well as honour to be invited to participate in such a wonderful and vibrant occasion. Kate Forde from Thames Festival Trust invited children from across KS2 in early March to create lanterns, to accompany large sculptures representing the main faiths in the procession. This is significant, as the Queen is seen to be the ‘Defender of faiths’.

The children created colourful butterflies and elegant white doves in a two day lantern-building workshop in May led by John and Hazel, two artists from Samesky, an arts organisation based in Brighton. The children learned new skills crafting frames using willow, followed by covering them with specialist paper. The children worked confidently in pairs and teams, supporting each other and problem solving at every stage. They showed resilience and determination to complete their spectacular lanterns learning new techniques along the way. Mr MacGregor (headteacher), Ms Chawda (EAL/Global Lead) and some of our children, were interviewed by a camera team from the Queen’s pageant at the time of the workshops. Questions asked included, ‘What does the Queen mean to you?’ and ‘What would the Queen’s superpower be?’
team of artists worked further on adorning white umbrellas with beautiful patterns. It was clear to see how much each family embraced the pattern making and enjoyed creative time together! There was a buzz in the room and around the centre. Different groups were preparing for the pageant at the centre and there was great camaraderie and good cheer amongst everyone. The children received many compliments about their brilliant artwork but also their impeccable behaviour.
The lanterns were a central feature of the parade and were taken to Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre (QEII) on the day of the pageant. The day began with children and their families being met by Ms Chawda, Mrs Crozier (Assistant Headteacher) and Ms Piddington (PHSE Lead). There was great excitement as everyone was officially signed in and taken to a special area where a

The children and parents prepared for the pageant collecting their lanterns and wearing colourful sashes. Other groups such as London Brass All Stars, (a wonderful band of musicians and dancers representing the different decades) were rehearsing at the same venue and the call finally came to join the procession outside. The procession proceeded to The Mall and towards the Victoria Memorial outside Buckingham Palace. Thankfully it was a comfortable day with a light wind but an electric atmosphere with crowds cheering us on. Everyone danced and moved to the sound of the band ahead all in good spirits. There were squeals of delight from the children as everyone joined in the procession and marvelled at decorated buses and other huge sculptures passing by. The Platinum Jubilee Pageant is a celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s incredible 70-year reign. Southern Road Primary School was proud to participate and embrace the significance of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s special Bank Holiday celebration. Parents and children were the stars for the day. The school is proud of all their endeavours and their involvement. We thank them wholeheartedly!

Newham Schools Celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Maryland Primary School To commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Maryland Primary School had a family picnic. We had so many parents who attended which made the day even more special. There was a giant cut out of the Queen which was very popular with everyone. The children made crowns which they wore during the picnic. During our event we had games, music, scones, ice lollies, we even had our school choir and dance group singing and dancing. It was a wonderful afternoon. Headteacher, Mrs Lorna Jackson said ‘I have been fortunate enough to celebrate the Queen’s Silver, Gold, Diamond and now Platinum Jubilee. I can honestly say this is the best one yet, so we tried to make it extra special for our 500 children to mark their place in history.’
