The School Attendance Challenge

Chris Fagan Business Application Support Manager Digital Services – The Education Space

It’s well known that following the pandemic, many schools in England have found it incredibly challenging to encourage pupils back into the classroom. The DfE published updated guidance in May to support schools and local authorities in driving up school attendance titled Improving school attendance: support for schools and local authorities. Many of their recommendations focus on clear and concise messaging about school expectations and the importance of good attendance on pupil wellbeing, safety and attainment. One of the tools in the school’s arsenal is fines, in which are used in varying degrees. Some schools actively fine parents to discourage poor attendance, other schools do not utilise fines at all. It was recently revealed that almost 1.8m children regularly missed school in the first term of the 21/22 academic year and to date over £3.7M in fines have been issued to parents, but is fining parents the best approach? Currently, we are experiencing the difficulties associated with the growing cost of living crisis, which is disproportionately affecting the poorest families who are also most likely to have poor attendance, and therefore be subject to fines. The Government has recently confirmed that a new cost-of-living payment will be issued to more than eight million households, as part of a £37 billion package to help families with living pressures.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS

Clearly, there is a place for fines as part of a consistently applied escalation procedure but the DfE guidance places more emphasis on families and schools working in partnership to tackle attendance issues and drive improvement. As part of its recommendations, the DfE advocate the use of robust school systems that ‘provide useful data at cohort, group and individual pupil level to give an accurate view of attendance, reasons for absence and patterns amongst groups’ to regularly monitor attendance and facilitate early intervention. Understanding the underlying reasons for absence should be a key role schools are undertaking when trying to tackle persistent absence. For instance, are there patterns to the absence? Is it at a certain point during the month when money might be really tight (before pay day) and paying for transport to school is an issue? There are a number of factors to consider when looking at absence stats. It is my experience that schools make a great effort to support pupils and families with the information they have but many are unaware of how best to utilise their existing MIS system to monitor attendance amongst vulnerable groups and actively flag pupils whose attendance has become a cause for concern. Schools MIS contains a wealth of very powerful data, unfortunately many schools use the MIS as a storage cabinet for information rather than a tool that provides the holistic view of each child to determine how and where schools utilise their very valuable resources.

Odessa Year Two Camping Trip 2022

Odessa Infant School

Our year two children at Odessa Infant school went to Debden campsite with their teachers on the 15th and 16th June. We camped under the stars, made our own barbecue food and toasted marshmallows on the fire. Everybody had a fantastic time in the woods climbing trees, exploring the environment and collecting wood for the fire. We sang campfire songs and enjoyed a story in our tents before bed. We learnt about the best wood to use to start a fire and how to enjoy ourselves without a screen in sight! A really great time was had by all!

Celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at Southern Road Primary School Southern Road Primary School

On Tuesday 14th June 2022, Southern Road Primary celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and what a fantastic day it was! In the week prior to the celebration, the children and teachers researched significant events in the Queen’s life. Each year group produced a range of work focused on a decade of the Queen’s 70 year reign and on the day of the celebration came together to share their learning. Staff and pupils watched a range of amazing performances including drama,

The day finished with a parade around the playground wearing commonwealth crowns, with each class carrying their incredible portraits of the Queen in the style of an artist from their decade and placards with key events from the decade. The atmosphere of the celebration was truly lovely and it was clear to see how

There are two entry points to the programme - Readiness (which leads to Development the following year) and Development (which bypasses the Readiness year).

Readiness Readiness supports leaders to develop the subject knowledge, systems and pedagogy to develop a mastery approach to maths. Although it adds a year of support to your programme, joining at Readiness will not 'slow down' the development of maths teaching at your school. Five school visits allow for bespoke support that suits your school. There are limited spaces in Readiness as it is a more intensive programme. If you join Readiness, you will proceed to Development the following year. The Readiness year does not have a participation grant but is fully funded and free for you to access. Your commitment for this year: 2x named teachers (one of whom should be the maths lead) who you will release for 5 workshops and 5 school visits in the academic year 2022-23 Head Teacher to attend first Work Group Head Teacher to be available during school visits.

Development Development supports teachers to understand teaching for mastery through shared lesson studies. It is the second starting point for the Teaching for Mastery Programme. In the Development year there is a £1000 participation grant which you can claim if you participate fully in this programme. Your commitment for this year: 2x named teachers (one of whom should be the maths lead) who you will release for 6 workshops and 3 school visits in the academic year 2022-23 Head Teacher to be available for meetings during school visits. Secondary Teaching for Mastery 22/23

ded Fully fun Development Work Groups

Professional development to enable you to introduce teaching for mastery across your maths department.

Teaching for Mastery Open day Lesson walk + information Sarah Bonnell School Wed 29th June 1pm - 3:45pm Click here to register.

Benefits Your students will develop a deep, secure and connected understanding of the maths they are learning

What is involved? Secondary maths teachers whose schools want to introduce teaching for mastery can nominate two teachers ('Mastery Advocates') to join a Work Group. Mastery Advocates then form part of a locally-based group of teachers who meet regularly to develop professional knowledge and expertise and receive bespoke support.

You will begin to develop teaching for mastery approaches within your own classroom You and your head of department will begin to develop an understanding of the practices and principles aligned to secondary teaching for mastery

In a Teaching for Mastery Work Group, teachers collaborate with colleagues from local schools and get support and guidance from a Local Leader of Maths Education (LLME). Participants also take away ideas to help students become more confident mathematicians, ready to tackle GCSE and A level, and begin to introduce and embed teaching for mastery.

You will begin to support the teachers in your department to develop teaching for mastery approaches in their practice

Who can take part? This programme is for state-funded secondary schools in England. Mastery Advocates should be teachers with the commitment, experience, and authority to lead developmental work across a maths department. The support of the Head of Maths, and the Headteacher or a member of SLT, is also essential.
