10 Year Anniversary

This year NPW celebrated its 10 year anniversary! The occasion was marked at our AGM earlier this month where we were joined by our school members for food and drinks. It has been an incredible journey with some real highs but we have also faced some difficult challenges. We wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of our member schools for their continued support over the last 10 years and we look forward to supporting you for the next 10 years.

Lifetime Achievement Award for Contribution to Education in Newham

The Education Space

The Education Space was delighted to honour Sam Coster at our recent Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 8 November 2022.

Anthony Wilson, CEO of Newham Community Learning, presented the Lifetime Achievement Award for Contribution to Education in Newham, paying tribute to Sam’s service to education in Newham that has spanned more than 60 years. The award was received by Sam’s step-daughter, Karen Pearce. Sam was able to join the meeting online and received a standing ovation from all those attending in person.

Sam dedicated over 60 years to education in Newham starting in 1957

as a teacher at Burke Secondary School. Sam joined Eastlea in 1972 where he remained until 1991. In November 1991 (after having retired) Sam joined the support team at Three Mills, Tunmarsh. From 1995 Sam worked in Teacher Training for 12 years, not wanting to rest on his laurels Sam decided to take up a role as Governor at Ellen Wilkinson in his spare time in 2004.

Sam continues to serve the Newham community as Secretary to the District Cricket Team and remains a School Governor at Ellen Wilkinson Primary School with 18 years of service.

Congratulations Sam a true inspiration to all of us at The Education Space!

To Keep or Not to Keep

Baby boomers like myself tend to hoard clothes. We were born in a time during the postwar era when new clothes were a luxury and people saved their good clothes for Sundays when they would wear their “Sunday Best”. I remember sowing my laddered tights! It was definitely not the disposable society we have today. Perhaps that has resulted in so many of us tending to hoard.

Data is a very valuable asset and some describe it as the new oil. However, just because it is valuable, does this mean we should hang on to that data “....just in case”.

Whilst the UK GDPR does not prescribe how long data should be retained, it does lay down two main principles.

The first principle is the data minimisation which states the requirement to limit data to what is necessary and not to retain more than is required for that purpose.

The second principle is the storage limitation principle which states that we must not keep data for longer than is necessary. The concept of ….”just in case” is not permitted!

We have to consider why we are holding data and must be able to justify it with a legal basis. Sometimes it is a statutory obligation and other times it is best practice. All schools should have a data retention policy which includes a schedule of all the data held along with the relevant timeframe and the justification for retaining it.

There are risks to schools who fail to adhere to the above principles:

Breach of retention period

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTERISSUE 66 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR THE FUTURE 6 NEWS
Louise

• Breach of data minimisation principle

• Breach of storage limitation principle

• Breach of purpose limitation principle

• Contractual breaches

• Personal data breach

• Ransomware attack

• Enforcement action

• SARs - complaint re data still being held

All of the above risks apply to data which is held in paper format as well as electronically. Organisations including schools are required to keep data accurate, provide individuals with the option to have their data rectified and also in certain circumstances to facilitate the right to be forgotten. Therefore, although data is certainly an asset, it can also be considered a liability.

At our termly Brunch & Discuss Data Protection User Group held at Boardman House last week, we covered this subject from a number of aspects. Tom Alexander spoke about the retention of HR records. We also had a guest speaker, Julie Halliday who worked for many years as a school business manager in Newham, most recently at Gallions Primary School. Julie spoke about how she and Nicky Harman transformed Gallions into a truly paperless office and explained the huge benefits the school in terms of efficiencies and cost savings.

Newham City Farm Update

Newham City Farm was the only place in Newham accessible to schools and residents to interact, volunteer, undertake work experience, learn about animals and access the therapeutic benefits of them. Many members of the community have been severely negatively impacted by its closure especially children, those with mental health needs and children and adults with SENDMH and their Carers.

The details for the next stage of the community consultation for the Beckton Parks Masterplan, of which the Newham City Farm site is part, have been announced and will be led by Engagement Team and East Architects.

If you would like to see this invaluable community and educational resource reopened again for schools and residents to enjoy and benefit from please book to attend workshop 4 for Area 3.

Workshop 3 for Area 2 is a space used by Curious By Nature for Forest School

activities and also includes Itchycoo Park with its wildlife pond, this maybe another useful workshop for schools and education providers to input into.

Co-Design Workshops for the Beckton Parks Masterplan

1. Saturday 26th November: 11:00 - 12:30which will be concentrating on AREA 1: the lake and the surrounding park

2. Saturday 26th November: 15:00 - 16:30which will be concentrating on AREA 4: the sports field and New Beckton Park

3. Saturday 3rd December: 11:00 - 12:30which will be concentrating on AREA 2: the woodlands and Beckton Corridor

4. Saturday 3rd December: 15:00 - 16:30which will be concentrating on AREA 3: King George V Park and the Newham City Farm Site

The workshops will feature a selection of engaging activities to help shape the

architectural plans and drawings for the Beckton Parks Masterplan, including the Newham City Farm Site (workshop 4). East Architects will be showcasing ideas developed from the Beckton Parks Playbook, with space for local people to feedback with priorities, preferences and other suggestions. The playbook indicated that there would be an “animal offer” but further details of what this might include were not made clear so its very important that schools, community groups and residents continue to input into the consultation and make their views known.

Children are welcome at the workshops and refreshments will be provided. As there will be limited spaces, please sign up for the specific workshops you wish to attend via Eventbrite.

Drop-in sessions will also be available to everyone, including those who are unable to access Eventbrite or Co-create, during the first hour prior to the above workshops. This will be an opportunity for local people to come and peruse and review the architectural drawings and ask questions to the Architects or Engagement Assistants present.

To maximise the opportunity it would be great if schools could also advertise these workshops to parents in their newsletters.

We are seeking to appoint a passionate English teacher to join our English and Media Faculty.

At Lister Community School, we believe that everyone should always aim for excellence, and the English faculty is committed to fulfilling this goal. Our vision is two-fold: firstly, to empower all of our students with excellent reading, writing, and speaking skills, including (working in conjunction with our superb library team) fostering a life-long love of reading. Secondly, we aim to use the study of English as a vehicle through which students may explore philosophy, psychology, and the human condition.
