Dear NSA Friends and Families, Over the last year, we have been celebrating NSA’s 50th anniversary and reflecting on how far NSA has come since the school’s modest beginning in 1966. Through all the 50th anniversary festivities and our capital campaign, it has been an absolute pleasure to hear the stories of our founding.

Head of School Deborah B. Russell

Administration

Led by Mr. Cabell Birdsong, a group of families began on a journey to launch a private school in Suffolk that would be dedicated to providing a quality education for students. He ad of School Debo rah B. Russell With just the idea, but without a facility or faculty, these volunteers launched NansemondSuffolk Academy. To ensure the success of NSA, volunteers located a facility to house the school and began the process of laying the foundation for NSA. These volunteers, now known as Saints, poured their hearts and souls into the school to see that the doors would open in the fall of 1966. NSA was conceived and built through the hearts, minds, generosity and dedication of so many families – many of whom continue to support NSA today.

While much has changed at NSA over the last half-century, the focus on providing a quality education has remained. Over the last 50 years, NSA has become one of the largest fully accredited, college preparatory independent day schools in Virginia. Our students continue to thrive in academics, arts and athletics, preparing them for life beyond NSA and enabling them to matriculate to some of the finest colleges and universities in the country as well as abroad.

Board of Trustees 2016-2017

With enrollment of more than 840 students on two campuses, NSA is thriving. Our beautiful Harbour View Campus opened this fall and serves over 100 new students ages two through Grade Three. This new satellite campus will contribute to the growth of our Main Campus as students from Harbour View transition to the Main Campus in Fourth Grade. While only in its first year of operation, the Harbour View Campus is already contributing to the financial vitality of NSA and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Without the ongoing support of the donors listed in this Gratitude Report, we would not have been able to open the new Harbour View Campus Chairman of the or continue to enhance our programs or facilities, as well as provide our Cabell Birdsong, NSA’s First A 50 th Gala students with the numerous opportunities they have at NSA. From the Board of Trustees, at the NS students, alumni, parents, past parents, past trustees, faculty and staff, we continue to be humbled by the generosity of all of the donors who have enabled us to set records with participation in giving to our Annual Fund. Additionally, we have also set a record with our current Capital Campaign, led by Charles Birdsong ’88, as we have raised more than $7.3 million to fund professional development, program enhancements, technology, capital improvements and the endowment. This campaign has allowed us to further enhance the student experience through the creation of the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Innovation Lab, the Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence, the new Harbour View Campus and several improvements to the Main Campus including the renovation of bathrooms, new sound systems, scoreboards, playground equipment, a new wireless network and updated classroom technology. We are grateful for those who have supported the campaign to date and have assisted us in moving NSA forward. While NSA has advanced significantly over the years, we must continue to progress in all facets of our programs and pedagogy because of the substantial changes taking place in education. We are committed to embracing the changes in education and evolving our curriculum and programs to equip our students with the skills they will need to be successful in college and in life. As such, the Board of Trustees recently approved our new strategic plan which will guide the school’s future for the next five years. Regardless of how education evolves, NSA is and will remain a truly special place where our students are engaged in personal growth, inspired to discover their passion and empowered to make a difference in the world. Without your support, we could not do what we do each day. We appreciate your support of, dedication to and belief in NSA and our Saints through the years. We invite you to continue helping make the dreams of our students and our school a reality. It is truly a great time to be a Saint! All my best,

Mission At Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, students are engaged in personal growth, inspired to discover their passion and empowered to make a difference in the world. 2 color, ethnic background, national origin, handicapped status or religion. T H E H E A RT O F O U R SCHOOL – TEACHERS, S T U D E N T S A N D PA R E N T S

I

n 1966, a group of approximately 100 parents, led by Cabell Birdsong, formed NansemondSuffolk Academy (NSA), a private elementary school in Suffolk, Virginia, serving grades one through seven. Our school began with just a handful of eager and loving parents who spent two months turning an old former factory on Newport Street in downtown Suffolk into classrooms. Motivated by their desire to provide a quality education for their children, parents donated their time, talent and treasures to make their dream of a new school in Suffolk a reality. With less than a month to open the doors, parents put up partitions for classrooms, installed wiring, performed assorted carpentry chores, installed tile floors, made blackboards, painted desks and walls, drove buses, washed windows and hung curtains. The students even helped by painting furniture and refinishing desks. Much of the material used to finish the building was donated or supplied at cost by friends of NSA. From the beginning, it was clear that the teachers, students and parents were at the heart of our school. NSA opened with 128 students, six teachers and a principal, Mrs. Ruth Watts (1966-1969). When the school opened, the operating budget was $50,000, tuition was $350 and the average teacher’s salary was $5,500. Approximately 75 percent of the students came from Nansemond County and the remainder from Suffolk. Three school buses provided transportation to and from school.

and purchased all of the plants and mulch with the goal of making NSA one of the most beautiful school campuses in Virginia. With a strong foundation in place, NSA’s first long-standing headmaster, Arthur E. Jones (1971-1984), focused on developing a full range of academic, athletic and extracurricular programs. On January 16, 1971, NSA hosted its first boys’ basketball game against Mecklenburg Academy at the Birdsong Center before a crowd of more than 400 people. The Saints won the game 52-44. The following year, NSA’s first home boys’ basketball game was held in NSA’s gymnasium. Also, in the summer of 1972, the Upper School band was formed with 11 students. By the 1972-1973 academic year, the Upper School band had increased to 35 members and a sixth grade band was also started in the Lower School. During Mr. Jones’ tenure, NSA held graduation for the first time with 30 students in the Class of 1972. The school’s motto, Honor Above All, was inscribed on their class rings. Mr. Jones continued to grow enrollment and was diligent in his efforts to draw students from Portsmouth, Chesapeake and the surrounding areas as well as from Suffolk. The involvement of many communities in the NSA school family became a hallmark of our school.

From 1969-1970, Mr. Charles M. Saunders assumed the role of headmaster. The school quickly outgrew its makeshift facilities on Newport Street and, in 1970, moved to a 50-acre site located on Route 460 that was purchased for $60,000. A Lower School building was erected, and NSA expanded to include grades one through eleven. Classes for the older students were held in mobile units behind the Lower School building. To promote school spirit and to instill a sense of pride, Headmaster Alvin W. Anderson (1970-1971) called the first student body meeting before the school year began in 1970. A group of 192 students gathered to vote on school colors and to elect class officers. They selected blue, gold and white. Once the school year began, the student body also voted on a team name, the Saints. In 1971, an Upper School building was erected to house grades eight through twelve. Total enrollment grew to 520. With little money, borrowed equipment and high hopes, parents took on the overwhelming responsibility of landscaping the campus. They created their own landscaping plans 6

E S TA B L I S H I N G CHERISHED TRADITIONS

F

rom very early on, traditions quickly became an integral part of the NSA experience, bringing the community together. Field days, Halloween carnivals, antique auctions, barbeque dinners and other beloved traditions such as Senior Day, Prom and Ring Dance were established. Students looked forward to events throughout the year, such as Colonial Craft Day, Grandparents’ Day, Veterans Day, Mardi Gras celebrations, toga parties, May Day and field trips to Washington, D.C., Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown. Upper School students enjoyed building floats for Homecoming and decorating the gym or cafeteria for Prom. Lower School students loved singing NSA’s school song, “Grand Old School,” and knew every word to the song! The first Field Day at NSA was held in 1973 and included a greased pig race, sack races, threelegged races, wheelbarrow games, rides and booths full of fun games for children. In 1975, the first “marching” band played in the stands of the last home football game, but the uniforms looked much different than they do today. At that time, the students wore old jackets, dark pants and bow ties. In 1978, the first Advancement Placement course, AP English, was offered. While academic standards continued to be high, the faculty and administration recognized that students needed more than just academics. The students needed to understand the values of personal responsibility, honesty and integrity. More importantly, honor had to come before anything else to uphold the school’s motto. For that reason, the Student Council was challenged to create an honor code and an honor system. Throughout the fall, students worked to craft an honor pledge and a system for accountability. By winter break in 1979, an Honor Pledge was introduced to the student body and the first Honor Council, made up of students and a few teachers (serving as advisors), was established. NSA students pledged to uphold the school’s motto, “Honor Above All,” and to not “lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those acts from others.”

In 1979, NSA joined the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools (TCIS) to compete athletically with other independent schools in the area. Today, NSA continues to be a member of the TCIS along with nine other schools and is also a member of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA), which provides additional independent school competition on a statewide level. In the summer of 1982, NSA started the popular summer camp program, known as Kaleidoscope. NSA’s new summer camp program offered students an unlimited array of adventures from academic enrichment to the great outdoors, from sports and games to exciting field trips.

and the school adopted an exclusively college preparatory curriculum. During Mr. Barrett’s tenure, enrollment grew to 850, a preschool was established, the Bulletin newsletter was created, expansion of the Lower School took place and an emphasis was placed on attracting students as well as faculty members from diverse backgrounds. NSA also received accreditation by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) and became a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). To further enhance our programs and to complement our college-preparatory curriculum, NSA moved college counseling from NSA’s Guidance Office and appointed a Director of College Counseling, Ann S. Powell, for whom the Office of College Counseling is now named. Mrs. Powell guided more than 1,000 students through the complex process of admissions during her tenure at NSA and also established the philosophy of finding the right fit for students, matching them with colleges or universities best suited to their unique interests and abilities. To accommodate the school’s growth, enhancements to the campus were also made. A new building, located in the middle of the campus, was constructed and included a cafetorium, additional classrooms as well as laboratories for science and math. The old cafeteria in the Lower School was converted to a gymnasium for Lower School students. The Upper School library was also expanded to create more space for students, books, equipment and technology. Computers made their first appearance on campus in the early 1980s with introductory classes in computer literacy. The day after the dismissal for holiday vacation in 1985, two cranes gently hoisted the nine mobile units used as classrooms to take them away to make room for the new construction of a primary wing for the Lower School. Over time, children, teachers and parents watched in eager anticipation as the new classrooms and amphitheater were built where the prefab classrooms once stood. Once construction was complete, students enjoyed the beautiful, spacious campus. As a result of this expansion, a year and a half later, a new early school program started and quickly became one of the most exciting and important new offerings at our school. The first class of four-year-olds (which included 19 students) started at NSA and many continued on to graduate as members of the Class of 2001. In the spring of 1986, the first NSA Senior Slideshow, which has become an important tradition at NSA, was unveiled. To this day, seniors and their families look forward to viewing all of the special moments that are captured throughout their senior year. When the class gathers for a reunion, alumni view the slideshow again. Throughout the 80s, academic, athletic and artistic programs and facilities continued to develop as the student body grew in size. While the class sizes at NSA have varied through the years, NSA’s Class of 1988 remains the largest graduating class to date with 93 members.

Upon Mr. Jones’ retirement, J. Albert Barrett (1984-1989) became president,

PURSUING ACADEMIC AND EXTRACURRICULAR EXCELLENCE

D

r. Douglas C. Naismith (1989-2005), NSA’s longestserving president, continued to pursue a course of academic and extracurricular excellence. Through his leadership, enrollment grew to approximately 1,045 making NSA one of the largest independent schools in Virginia. In addition, NSA continued expansion and improvement of facilities, adopted programs for financial aid and planned giving, foreign exchange, before-and after-school care, diversity among the student body, character education, a Seventh Grade Cultural Fair, classroom technology and an expanded array of athletic offerings for boys and girls. Dr. Naismith also penned a second version of NSA’s Alma Mater, “Hail to Nansemond-Suffolk.” In the 90s, further improvements to the campus were made as a result of the continued growth in enrollment. The Helen B. Holland Early School wing was constructed for the preschool program, which began to include three-year-old students. The Becky Godwin Lower School Memorial Library was constructed to house a computer lab for Lower School students, and the Camp Gymnasium was constructed at the west end of the campus for Lower School physical education. The former Lower School gymnasium and locker rooms were converted to the Nancy F. Russell Auditorium and five classrooms to serve Lower School students. In the Upper School, an administrative wing was completed, which included the president’s office, a business office and a conference room. The next major expansion included construction of additional classrooms for the Upper School. The $1.2 million project provided more space for the math and foreign language classes and created a new wing for band, art and journalism. The health clinic was also enhanced to better serve the school community. Further improvements to athletic facilities were also completed, including new tennis courts and new fields for softball, baseball, lacrosse and soccer.

plays, holiday concerts and performances in the community. The student literary magazines, Spectrum and Reflections, became additional outlets for students to express their creativity and to take ownership of the publishing process. The Scroll, NSA’s yearbook, continued to bring excitement to the students upon its unveiling at the end of each year. In 1991, NSA’s first Art Show and Sale was held to benefit the entire arts program. New traditions were also established in the 90s. In 1991, NSA began its first Norwegian cultural exchange with two high schools, Kirkeparken and Malakoff, in Moss, Norway. As part of this exchange, Norwegian students and their two sponsors visited NSA for three weeks, and 14 students traveled to Norway. The Norwegian exchange continues today with students from each country sharing their culture, customs, education and history. Another new tradition was established with NSA’s Class of 1999. Members of this class were the first to celebrate Commencement on the front lawn of the Upper School. The ceremony had been moved through the years from the Upper School gymnasium to the cafeteria. As more alumni returned to visit, more traditions with alumni evolved. They valued the relationships they had formed with their friends and knew those friendships would endure. They wanted to stay connected to our school and to each other. For that reason, in 2002, NSA launched the Fleur-de-Lis, a publication for alumni, families and friends that was mailed to NSA alumni and supporters to keep the NSA community connected. Many alumni moved back to the area and started to enroll their children in their alma mater. Honoring children of alumni started to take place annually at Homecoming. As the years passed by, more and more alumni started to realize how formative NSA was to shaping who they had become.

NSA’s Visual and Performing Arts programs further thrived and became a more integral part of NSA’s offerings. NSA students showcased their talents through various performances and shows throughout the year, such as the Upper School Portfolio Student Art and Photography Show, band and chorus adjudications, musicals and 26

SA continued to grow into the turn of the 21st century. With this growth, in 2003, the Board of Trustees approved a capital campaign and projects, including the construction of a premier 24,000-square foot classroom building for grades five through seven, the modification of the existing Lower School building, the construction of a new Upper School Library/Media Center and the transformation of the existing Upper School library into a science complex. Under the direction of Mr. Shane A. Foster, Head of School (2005-2008), construction and improvements continued as NSA purchased 47 acres of land adjacent to the school’s existing property, renovated the Thomas W. Johnson Gymnasium and improved the baseball field. In addition, during Mr. Foster’s tenure, NSA adopted a new Fundraising and Marketing policy, the Fleur-deLis Leadership Giving Society was established and NSA secured the largest foundation grant in the school’s history from the Beazley Foundation. During this time, NSA’s alumni programs were also further expanded with the launch of the On the Road Reunion program, the Alumni Legacy Luncheon, as well as the creation of the “GO SAINTS” poster, which NSA alumni and families began bringing on vacations to highlight their travels.

Under her leadership, NSA launched a $6 million capital campaign with the goal of improving faculty and staff benefits, promoting professional development, enhancing programs and technology, making capital improvements, opening a new satellite campus in North Suffolk and growing the endowment. In 2014, NSA launched a new program in the Helen B. Holland Early School for two-year-old students and started the Sandra F. Birdsong Center for Academic Excellence, naming it in honor of former administrator Sandra Birdsong. The Upper School Library/Media Center was also renamed the Hawks Library to honor former NSA English teacher Claudia Hawks and her family. In 2015, NSA opened the state-of-the-art science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Innovation Lab and built the new satellite Lower School campus in Harbour View. Throughout 2016, the Board of Trustees worked diligently with many NSA stakeholders to develop the school’s next Strategic Plan for 2017-2022, which charts the course for NSA’s future and that of our students.

Under the leadership of NSA’s fifth Head of School, Mr. Colley W. Bell III (2008-2013), a Middle School for grades five through seven was designated (although later realigned to grades six through eight), and improvements were made to the Arthur E. Jones Athletic Field and the Upper School hallways and lockers. Additionally, the Cafetorium, including the sound and lighting systems, was renovated to further enhance our arts programs. SMART Boards® were introduced in the classrooms, the eSaints online newsletter was created and the Senior Tribute as well as the Annual Report (renamed the Gratitude Report) became new publications. New programs were also established, including the Student Ambassador program, the FIRST® LEGO® League robotics program and the Second Grade garden. The Convocation Ceremony held at the beginning of each academic year also became a new tradition. At NSA’s first Convocation Ceremony in 2008, Bernard A. Saint “Bernie” (our Saint Bernard mascot) was unveiled and named by the students. Each graduating class also received a class banner that was displayed in the Thomas W. Johnson Gymnasium in the Beazley Center. In 2010, the tradition of honoring our long-time faculty members with either a gold 25-year or blue 30-year banner was also introduced. The following year, the Class of 2011 was also celebrated for making NSA history by being the first senior class to reach 100% support of the NSA Annual Fund! Mrs. Deborah B. Russell assumed the Head of School position in 2013. 32

espite all the changes over the last 50 years, NSA continues to stand for the principles on which the school was originally founded. We remain a close-knit community that is dedicated to educational excellence and committed to our belief in Honor Above All. We also continue to be very fortunate to have many volunteers comprised of alumni, parents, grandparents and community friends who dedicate countless hours to helping NSA each and every day.

annually in Hampton Roads, which demonstrates NSA’s role now and in the future as an important economic driver to the region. Over the next half-century, NSA will continue its commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience for future generations in Hampton Roads and in northeastern North Carolina. While the educational landscape and classrooms of today may look very different in another 50 years, the close-knit community that defines and differentiates NSA along with our commitment to Honor Above All will continue to be the foundation of the school.

Student-teacher/coach relationships also continue to be the core of the NSA experience. The environment at NSA is still one of mutual respect and trust which ensures that every student is comfortable taking chances in the safety of our classrooms. In addition, our faculty continues to foster an environment in which students develop into scholars, artists, athletes, inventors, leaders and great moral citizens. Classroom activities, projects, extracurricular clubs, athletics, and the visual and performing arts continue to provide a broad range of opportunities for NSA students, enabling them to obtain a holistic education. From chorus to cross country and LEGOÂŽ Robotics to lacrosse, our students are involved in every aspect of the school. To encourage creative expression, our comprehensive arts program includes studio art, photography, theater arts, concert band, marching band and chorus. Our art students have received many accolades over the years in chorus, performing arts, visual arts, photography, band and theater with recognition taking place at the local, regional, state and national levels. Through the years, student-athletes have also received numerous honors and awards and many have moved on to play at the collegiate level. A few have even been successful at the professional level as well! Collectively, our teams over the last 50 years have won 57 TCIS championships and 12 VISAA state titles as well as numerous championships in conferences prior to joining the TCIS and VISAA. Over the last half-century, more than 3,000 students have graduated from NSA and many have chosen to return to Hampton Roads to live, work and raise their families. As such, NSA and its alumni have more than a $100 million total economic impact

WAY S O F G I V I N G T O N S A As an independent school, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy has derived all of its financial support from tuition and voluntary contributions by alumni, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, friends, corporations and foundations since the Academy’s inception in 1966. Donors to NSA are provided with many opportunities to give to the school, whether the gift is to the Annual Fund to support program initiatives, the capital campaign to support our strategic goals or the Saints Society to help provide for the future.

Cash Gifts Most gifts made to NSA are in the form of cash, the most convenient way of giving. Such gifts are tax-deductible and are vital to the support of NSA’s annual, capital and endowment needs. Credit cards Damien Baize ’22 with Bernie (Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express) are accepted as well. You may also make your gift through the automatic debit of your bank account or through the NSA website at nsacademy.org (Support/Donate Now).

Gifts of Stock/Securities Securities are perhaps the best form of assets to use in making a charitable gift. When ownership of a security – which may result in a capital gain if sold – is transferred to NSA, you avoid substantial capital gains taxes and receive a charitable gift tax deduction for the fair market value of the security.

Legacy Gifts Legacy giving, also known as planned giving, provides an opportunity for donors to make provisions for the support of NSA through a deferred gift. Methods of legacy giving may be tailored to suit your needs and ways of giving may include: gifts through wills, charitable trusts, real estate, life insurance, bequests or life income agreements.

Matching Gifts Many companies will “match” a current or retired employee’s contribution to a non-profit organization. By taking advantage of your company’s matching gift benefit, your donation could be doubled. Please check with your employer to determine if your company supports matching gifts and to obtain the appropriate paperwork to submit with your gift. More than 500 companies match gifts to independent schools.

Other Gifts Gifts may be made in honor or in memory of an individual. Opportunities are also available for named gifts or special memorials to honor a family member, friend or loved one. Special gifts, donations directed toward a particular program, or need and gifts-in-kind are also accepted. We welcome inquiries about such gifts. Please visit our website to make a gift at nsacademy.org or mail donations to: Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Office of Advancement Main Campus 3373 Pruden Boulevard, Suffolk, VA 23434

Donations made by you to the NSA Annual Fund touch every student, every teacher, every family, every day.

ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund is one of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s top fundraising priorities. Donations to the Annual Fund help fund program initiatives, financial aid, professional development, the arts program and the athletic programs to support the mission of NSA. Annual Fund donations are comprised of unrestricted annual donations, gifts-in-kind, gifts made in memory or in honor of individuals, or gifts made in support of our events and affinity groups (Art Show and Sale, E@uction, Golf Tournament, Golden Saints Club or Royal Saints Club). Donations made by you to the NSA Annual Fund touch every student, every teacher, every family, every day and help advance the school. Your financial contributions to NSA make you a part of a generous tradition of giving by alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, ’23 ay ms Ra er Tyl and faculty, corporations, foundations and friends. , Peyton Ramsay ’25 Matthew Ramsay ’27 Your support is extremely important to NSA because the corporations and foundations that support the Annual Fund often ask, “What percentage of your parents, faculty, alumni, grandparents or parents of alumni support your Annual Fund?” If the percentage of donors from the members of the NSA family is high, the foundation or corporation is more likely to approve our funding request. Gifts of any amount, large and small, are greatly appreciated.

FLEUR-DE-LIS SOCIETY What is the Fleur-de-Lis Society? Named for the school’s signature emblem, the Fleur-de-Lis Society salutes alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, foundations, corporations and friends who provide leadership gifts of $1,000 or more to the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Annual Fund.

How Do I Become a Member of the Fleur-de-Lis Society?

PLANNED GIVING Saints Society The Saints Society was established in 1996 by Past Trustee Sue Birdsong to honor generous alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends who have created trusts, bequests or other legacy gifts to benefit Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. All who provide for the future financial security of NSA with legacy gifts are eligible to become members of the Saints Society. Legacy giving, also known as planned giving, is a non-traditional way of making a gift to NSA and taking advantage of special tax-wise benefits as a result. Providing an opportunity for donors to make provisions for the support of NSA through a deferred gift, legacy giving may be tailored to suit your needs.

Donors qualify for membership by contributing $1,000 or more to the NansemondSuffolk Academy Annual Fund during the fiscal year (July 1 June 30).

A bequest intention or a planned gift of any size qualifies a donor for membership in the Saints Society.

What are the Recognition Levels and Opportunities? Each year, NSA will host a special event to honor Fleurde-Lis Society members. The Joshua Fenner ’21, Stephen Gottlieb ’21, Henry Cox ’21 Fleur-de-Lis Society donor and Chaitanya Barot ’21 appreciation event is held in the fall each year. Additionally, members will be recognized in the NSA Gratitude Report. Donors who have made cumulative gifts to NSA through the years totaling over $10,000 are recognized on our cumulative giving plaque in the Upper School foyer. Should you have questions or need additional information, contact the Office of Advancement at (757) 539-8789 ext. 3234 or visit the NSA website at nsacademy.org.

Methods are varied and may include: • life insurance • bequests • retirement plan assets • real estate • charitable lead trusts • charitable remainder trusts Membership in the Saints Society is a testament to a donor’s belief in the importance of providing a quality NSA education and perpetuates the donor’s legacy with the school. Funds generated from these gifts, large and small, help shape NSA’s academic programs, support outstanding teachers and enable talented and motivated students to attend the school. If establishing a legacy gift is of interest to you, please contact Kenda G. Council ’91, Director of Advancement, at (757) 539-8789 ext. 3339 or kcouncil@nsacademy.org to discuss your individual situation and wishes. S T R AT E G I C P L A N A VISION FOR THE FUTURE Strategic Plan 2017-2022

S T R AT E G I C P L A N SIX STRATEGIC IMPERATIVES

We are committed to creating an extraordinary educational environment for our students, faculty and staff. In August of 2016, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved a new Strategic Plan, including a new mission statement, an updated vision statement as well as characteristics of professional excellence and core values that we foster in the NSA community. Many members of the NSA community participated in this 18-month process through surveys, focus groups and steering committees. The 2017-2022 Strategic Plan is a shared vision for our future that highlights six strategic imperatives to ensure that all aspects of the NSA experience continue to meet the current and future needs of our students. We hope that you will join us on this new adventure as we Engage, Inspire and Empower our current and future Saints! To view the complete plan, please visit nsacademy.org (About/Strategic Plan).

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is a community dedicated to educational excellence for future generations.

At Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, students are engaged in personal growth, inspired to discover their passion and empowered to make a difference in the world.

Character is our Foundation. Community is our Hallmark. Excellence is our Standard. Discovery is our Passion.

• Deliver a progressive curriculum and programs that provide a challenging, innovative and inspiring environment to foster a love of learning and intellectual exploration. • Continue to provide a nurturing environment that fosters personal integrity, honorable achievement and social responsibility. • Recognize the commitment of our educators, serving as both teachers and role models, who are passionate about their profession and growth, are committed to the principles and values of NSA, as well as dedicated to creating excellent, life-changing experiences for our students.

• Strive to further communicate and promote the NSA student experience and exceptional student outcomes to engage existing families as well as to attract students with a passion for learning. • Refine our financial plans to weave affordability, accessibility and financial vitality into the tapestry of the school’s future. • Continue to enhance the Board’s governance practices to guide the school in the future.

“We are committed to preparing our students, from the earliest age, to thrive in an increasingly complex world. Our community has come together to establish an inspiring vision for the future of NSA and our Saints.” ~ Deborah B. Russell, Head of School
