Dear NSA Friends and Families, NSA is proud to have wrapped up another great year with the completion of the 2016-2017 academic year! There were many reasons to celebrate at the end of the year, including the following accomplishments: • Introduced a new strategic plan for 2017-2022 with an updated mission, vision, core values (for our students) and characteristics of professional excellence (for our faculty and staff );

• Started the year with the largest number of new students in years (239); • Opened the Harbour View campus and finished the year with more than 100 students; • Adopted a new math curriculum called “Math in Focus” in the Lower School; • Implemented two new STEM electives for 7th and 8th grade students; • Started an internship program for Upper School students including event planning, technology, STEM and early childhood education; • Began a new strategic partnership with the Hybrid Learning Consortium to offer online courses to Upper School students; • Celebrated 100% of the senior class being accepted to a college or university – including a very impressive list of schools such as MIT, Yale, Columbia, Pepperdine, Wake Forest, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Virginia, McGill and Virginia Tech; • Successfully completed the initial Virginia Association of Independent School (VAIS) visit in May for NSA’s 10-year re-accreditation; • Celebrated NSA’s 50th anniversary with numerous events including a well-attended gala during Homecoming weekend; and • Continued our efforts with the capital campaign with pledges totaling more than $7.5 million at the end of June and surpassed the fundraising goal for events for the 2016-2017 year. These accomplishments would not have been possible without the vision, support and hard work of the Board of Trustees, the faculty and staff as well as our parents and volunteers. It is an absolute pleasure and honor to work at NSA and to have the opportunity to witness the accomplishments of our students every day. I want to personally thank the NSA community for all your help and for another great year! All my best,

T H E G I E S FA M I LY A Family Tradition of Giving

“W

hen our son Austin was only a few months old we started looking at independent schools. We visited NSA and met administrator Jean Mauck. We immediately felt a bond with NSA. She made us feel connected and that by enrolling him at NSA we would be joining a family whose values were in concert with our ideals. At NSA, Austin found a second home. An only child, Austin feels like the students, faculty and staff are extensions of his family! In 2016, his friends learned that their beloved former teacher Mrs. Forehand was retiring. They decided to recreate a photo that had been hanging in her room since they were in her fourth grade class in 2009-2010. As a special token of their appreciation, they framed the new photo with the words, “We may be older, but we will ALWAYS be Mrs. Forehand’s 4th grade class.” This gesture by their classmates speaks to the connection that the teachers and students have with one another. In addition to the warm and welcoming community of friends he’s made, Austin has also been given many opportunities to excel. He’s served as Chairman of the Honor Council, member of the Golf Team, member of Student Government and as Bernie, our school mascot! The faculty and staff focus on the academics while also taking the time to encourage him to push himself and try different things – that’s the value of NSA. If you want your child to grow, develop and mature to become more of a complete person, then NSA is the right place for you and your family! We feel that independent education instills a sense of fundamental values that are carried with the students for a lifetime. Because it’s important to be involved in the life of our son’s school, we’ve served on the NSA Board of Trustees, volunteered with the NSA Band Parents Association and served on NSA’s Development Advisory Committee to secure Annual Fund support from parents at NSA. We believe we should support the school that has made an impact on our family and have tried to pass this on to Austin as well. When Austin was four, we gave him $3 per week and told him he should allocate $1 for savings, $1 for anything he would like and $1 to give back to the community. When Austin was in the Lower School, he saved money for 10 weeks in order to make his first donation to NSA! To this day, he takes a portion of the money he earns and divides it into thirds – and he always supports NSA. We are proud that he recognizes that many people have helped him along the way and he needs to do what he can to help others and pay that forward to help sustain our school for generations to come. Though supporting the school with time and talent is important, we also understand the need for legacy donations. Therefore, we have become members of NSA’s planned giving society, the Saints Society. Legacy gifts do not just benefit the students at NSA, but also the excellent faculty – the folks who work at NSA who love our children and love what they do. Families who send their children to NSA believe in the mission and the vision of the school. By joining the Saints Society, you show your passion for the school. It is an important way to support the vision of the school for years and years to come.

WAY S O F G I V I N G T O N S A As an independent school, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy has derived all of its financial support from tuition and voluntary contributions by alumni, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, friends, corporations and foundations since the Academy’s inception in 1966. Donors to NSA are provided with many opportunities to give to the school, whether the gift is to the Annual Fund to support program initiatives, the capital campaign to support our strategic goals or the Saints Society to help provide for the future.

Cash Gifts Most gifts made to NSA are in the form of cash, the most convenient way of giving. Credit cards (Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express) are accepted as well. Gifts of Stock/Securities Securities are perhaps the best form of assets to use in making a charitable gift. When ownership of a security – which may result in a capital gain if sold – is transferred to NSA, you avoid substantial capital gains taxes and receive a charitable gift tax deduction for the fair market value of the security.

Legacy Gifts Legacy giving, also known as planned giving, provides an opportunity for donors to make provisions for the support of NSA through a deferred gift. Methods of legacy giving may be tailored to suit your needs and ways of giving may include: gifts through wills, charitable trusts, real estate, life insurance, bequests or life income agreements.

Matching Gifts Many companies will “match” a current or retired employee’s contribution to a non-profit organization. By taking advantage of your company’s matching gift benefit, your donation could be doubled. Please check with your employer to determine if your company supports matching gifts and to obtain the appropriate paperwork to submit with your gift. More than 500 companies match gifts to independent schools.

Other Gifts Gifts may be made in honor or in memory of an individual. Opportunities are also available for named gifts or special memorials to honor a family member, friend or loved one. PLANNED GIVING Saints Society The Saints Society was established in 1996 by Past Trustee Sue B. Birdsong to honor generous alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends who have created trusts, bequests or other legacy gifts to benefit Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. All who provide for the future financial security of NSA with legacy gifts are eligible to become members of the Saints Society. Capital campaign donations support new facilities, major renovations, faculty professional development, endowment and exciting programmatic initiatives. The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Board of Trustees is focused on the future. In 2014, NSA launched a $6 million capital campaign, Our Saints. Our Future. An Investment in Excellence, to address our school’s needs. To date, NSA has raised over $8 million for the campaign. The campaign is based on the four pillars described below: Faculty and Staff • Enhancements to benefits, salaries, tuition remission and tuition reimbursement • Leadership development through professional learning communities and new hire mentorship program • Professional development and continuing education Programs and Technology • Enhanced Pre-K through Grade 12 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum • STEM Innovation Lab to provide a hands-on learning environment for the students • Assessment of current curricula and scheduling to become more student-centered, to better utilize our resources and to enhance our academic offerings • Creation of the Sandra F. In August of 2016, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved a new Strategic Plan, including a new mission statement, an updated vision statement as well as characteristics of professional excellence and core values that we foster in the NSA community. The 2017-2022 Strategic Plan is a shared vision for our future that highlights six strategic imperatives to ensure that all aspects of the NSA experience continue to meet the current and future needs of our students.
