Pools are reshaping North Idaho backyards
By KRISTINA LYMAN
The hottest backyard trend seems to be an unlikely one in temperate North Idaho. But pools these days are making a seismic splash, despite our muchtoo-short summer season.
“It used to be we would build about 20 to 30 pools a year and receive on average 100 calls in a season,” says Ted Puryear of Pool World. “In the first two months of the pandemic, we got 154 calls.”
Puryear has been in the pool building business for 33 years, 23 of them in direct sales, and all of them at Pool World’s Spokane and Coeur d’Alene locations. The only other time he saw a big increase in demand for pools was during the 2001 terrorist attacks when national security concerns forced people to hunker down at home.
When Covid-19 shut down the U.S.
in 2020, pools once again became popular with people spending more time at home, Puryear said.
“It was totally insane and we were scheduling out three to four weeks for meetings when before it was typically just a week out,” he says. “We’re still getting three or four times as many calls this winter, and it’s typically the slowest time of the year.”
The pandemic may have spurred the demand, but other factors continue to drive it. Puryear points to what has become a culture of staying home as well as the influx of residents from warmer climates who are accustomed to having a pool and want one here, even it if means a shorter swim season.
Lisa and Josh Jennings put their name on Pool World’s waitlist last year. The Seattle and Vermont

natives have lived in North Idaho for almost 10 years and never considered a pool until recently. Typical summers are spent on the lake but with how busy things have become, splashing around at home is much more appealing to them. A pool, Lisa says, checks a lot of boxes.
“We like the idea of having a draw for kids and families to come hang out at our house,” she says. “We have more than enough space for it, so from an aesthetic perspective it helps finish off our landscaping while giving us a fun element to enjoy with our family.”
>> Debunking the myths
Myth #1: Pools are too expensive
Pools are pricey, especially these days when manufacturing costs are on the rise. But with the many design and accessory options, one can be budget-minded.
Of course, if you want the creamof-the-crop pool, the investment is considerable.
“When you talk about a gunite pool with a vanishing edge and attached spa, it’s the ultimate dream pool for people,” Puryear says.
That dream pool can run you close to a million dollars when you consider engineering work for a retaining wall, rock hammering, labor and all of the custom finishes such as tile and lighting, he says.
But a hybrid concrete frame and vinyl-lined pool can be much more affordable, anywhere from the low to mid $100,000, depending on the size and accessories.
market has evolved, especially since the pandemic, many of our high-end buyers are coming from locations that have pools, and they like them.”
A pool can add value if it’s done well and the lot is large enough to accommodate it and a yard, he says. But, he cautions, whether it’s a dollar-for-dollar investment will depend on a variety of factors including the house, lot and location.
For those considering adding a pool, Conigliaro offers this advice:
Myth
#2:
Pools don’t increase home values
This might have been the case in the past. But times have changed, according to long-time Realtor Marcello Conigliaro of Northwest Realty Group in Coeur d’Alene.
“It used to be that appraisers would deduct value for homes that had a pool,” he says. “Not so much anymore. As the North Idaho
“If you can afford it and a pool will make you happy and you’re not concerned about getting every penny you put into it back, then have at it!”
Myth #3: Pool maintenance is costly and time consuming
Not these days. Maintenance costs have come down quite a bit and that makes owning a pool much more attractive. Major advancements in accessories and systems have made pools very low

maintenance. But those features do add to the upfront cost.
It used to cost $4,000 to $6,000 a season to heat an average-size pool (16’ X 32’) in North Idaho, Puryear says. But the advancements in energy efficiency have brought that cost down to $400 to $800 a season, he says. Heat pumps that replace expensive natural gas contribute to the dramatic decrease. Automatic covers that hold in the heat also help. Today, you can realistically extend the swim season to five or six months, Puryear says.
“Pools heat so much more inexpensively now,” he says. “You can start up sooner and stay open later.”
Myth #4: Gunite is better than vinyl This is an age-old question and the answer is literally in between.
Let’s look at both. Gunite pools are a concrete mixture. They are about 50% more expensive than other pools mainly because of the labor involved. But they do allow owners
more ways to customize with tiles and shapes.
Vinyl-lined pools are more popular as they are less expensive all around, Puryear says. There is

less labor involved and they can be installed more quickly. But if you’re cringing at the aesthetics of vinyl, don’t. The quality and design have undergone dramatic improvement, making vinyl liners the more popular choice of pool buyers.
The pool Puryear sells most of is a hybrid model that combines a concrete frame with a vinyl liner. Concrete instead of steel allows for custom options like benches and sundecks. The hybrid pool comprises most of Pool World’s installation business and for good reason.
“You can get the appearance and features of a gunite pool for less money,” he says.
Before you dive into buying a pool, check out these do’s and don’ts:
>> Do’s
• Research the installer. Choose a reputable company that offers a warranty.
• Know how you will use the pool so you get exactly what you want.
• Understand your budget. Don’t forget to factor in landscaping.
>> Don’ts
• Don’t leave it up to the pool installer to educate you. Some installers many not be up on important advancements that could save you money.
• Avoid buying based off price. Skimping on some upfront costs could cost you more in the long run.
• Don’t buy over the phone. Meet with the installer and ask lots of questions. A pool is a huge investment. N

river home goes from
DATED TO STUNNER
By KRISTINA LYMAN Photography By MIKE MCCALL
What started as a kitchen update ended in a fullblown renovation that turned a 1990s kitschy rustic home into modern marvel.
“We did the kitchen, then the homeowners said ‘let’s talk about the rest of the house,’” said designer Lynn Fleming who worked with Marianne and Andy Friedman to turn their 3,500-square-foot riverfront house into a sleek summer get-away.
A passionate cook and a consum mate entertainer, Marianne knew she wanted to overhaul the dated kitchen and create a stylish and high-functioning space, said Fleming of XACT Interiors in Coeur d’Alene. Marianne chose a black and white palette, which was in stark contrast to the home’s original woodsy theme. She wanted something different than rustic but didn’t want a full whitewash either, she said.

“This is a lake house. There are dogs and kids running in and out with wet feet and dirty hands,” she says of the home the couple bought in 2020. “I wanted it to look nice without sacrificing style.”
Black acrylic cabinets replaced pine. Gone went the moose curtains and metal pine tree lights. Drawers, cabinets and the walk-in pantry were reimagined and reorganized for ultimate efficiency.
The windows were expanded and a slider was put in to open up the view and add direct access to the deck. A five-sided pine and granite island was ripped out and replaced with one made of quartzite. A walnut ledge was added to warm up the sitting space.
“Lynn talked me into the walnut ledge because she wanted to break it up,” Marianne said. “I was hesitant about the durability of the wood. It was a little out of my comfort zone, but I love that aspect of it.”
It was Marianne’s dislike of the original island that kicked off the kitchen renovation.
“It was very oddly shaped. It had a white oven and across from it was a black oven,” she said. “That sort of started it.”
Once work began in the kitchen, the couple started looking at other areas of the house they wanted to see updated.
The next big project was the enclosed staircase. It was blown out and replaced with steel and walnut in a floating design that dramatically opens the space.

“It made an amazing difference,” Marianne said. “Everyone loves the stairs.”
Fleming took the couple’s ideas and helped shape them. She also guided them to local artisans, whom Marianne appreciated for the unique touches they brought to the various projects.
“It was a very collaborative pairing of my skills and her dream,” Fleming said.
The work took about nine months to complete. But in the end, a star was born.
“Everything was pretty smooth. Lynn pushed me a little bit. I have ideas but sometimes she goes a little further,” Marianne said. “We love it. We love the look and ease of it all.” N

Choosing the perfect
GARDEN FOR YOU
Gardening and working in the yard offer a healthy dose of physical exercise, and stud ies have shown that it helps you relax, relieves stress and anxiety, and restores mental health and sat isfaction with life. When gardening as a community or family, you cre ate connections that build over time. And you enhance the quality of life for yourself, those around you, your environment, your neighborhood, and your world.
As you consider where to start or continue your horticulture journey, the first question you should ask yourself is, “What type of garden is best for me?” Here are a few words of advice to help your green thumb find its niche.
>> Make a plan
Yes, you could show up at the garden center on the first day of spring and wing it. But making some sort of plan, even if it’s a loose one and you don’t check it twice, can help you find better success throughout the growing season and provide future reference for bigger and better gardens down the road.
A lot of resources suggest keeping a gardening journal, and, as a writer, I’ve always thought this was a fantastic idea. However, for me, that method of planning just doesn’t work. Instead, I have a photo journal. Snapping pictures every summer of my blooming container garden reminds me what I’ve done, what worked, and what failed. I also
By S. MICHAL BENNETT Photos by: JOEL RINER
keep a file of resources from my local Master Gardeners office of methods and information that have helped me grow more productively.
Think about how you learn and how you organize things. Maybe a journal is the perfect fit for you. Or perhaps you are more visual and a sketch of your flower beds or vegetable garden inspires and motivates you. Discover what works best for you and then allow nature and time to mold your plan into something wondrous.
>> Assess your space
My garden space consists of a section of a driveway tucked against a raised shrub and flower bed, which means that I have no ground soil to plant. It also faces north, which limits sun exposure, shortens my
26 NSPIREMAGAZINE.COM
GARDEN
growing season, and reduces my vegetable choices. Because of these two primary factors, I cultivate a container garden in 5-gallon buckets that I can move around with the sunlight, if needed. I also choose plants that are more cold hardy and thrive in partial sunlight, such as Polar and Siberian tomato varieties.
What kind of space do you have? Is it a sprawling lawn edged with lavender, ornamental trees, shrubs, rose beds? Perhaps it’s a third-floor balcony or small patio outside an apartment? Even a rocky dirt lot can become a flourishing garden with a little time and effort.
When evaluating your space, take into account the following: sunlight throughout the day, water
availability, protection from harsh weather, soil needs and health, and daily line of sight. Depending on what you plan to grow, having the right environmental conditions and soil are vital to the health and longevity of your garden. And when you plant within the scope of a kitchen window or regularly used doorway, you’ll be able to keep an eye on the progress of your plants and identify problems and pests before they cause too much damage.
>> Determine your goals
Once you know the space you want to grow, you can determine what you are able to plant, how it is laid out, and what goals you want to accomplish by the end of the growing season.
If you plant a basic salsa garden
– tomatoes, peppers, herbs, garlic, onions – your goal would be to have enough produce during harvest to make at least one jar of salsa! However, if you’re focusing on flower beds, you hope to reap a variety of blooms over a period of time. And maybe even start your own floral business!
>> Invest your time
Your goals may be grand or modest, but if you don’t have the time to invest in the plants you want to grow, you might want to reconsider your plan. Vegetable gardens need time to prepare beds or pots, plant seeds, manage insects and pest, water, fertilize, and nurture fruit and plants. Lawns need mowing and weeding. Shrubs and flowers need

pruning and picking. If you work long hours or plan to be on vacation for extended periods during the growing season, perhaps a more simplified plan would be best.
See the article “Growing Families Together” in this publication for more on the benefits of families growing gardens.
>> Identify your growing zone
Another major factor in determining what you can grow and when is identifying your growing zone. All plants don’t thrive in every climate and landscape. The USDA’s Plant Hardiness Zone Map is an exceptional starting point for figuring out your zone and what grows best there (planthardiness. ars.usda.gov). From there, the Old Farmer’s Almanac helps you find this year’s first and last frost dates for your zone as well as what grows best in your climate. Your local Extension office is also an invaluable resource for discovering adapted and native plants.
Growing in a greenhouse or your home can extend your growing season and allow you to grow plants that don’t naturally thrive in your area. If a plant needs insects or other plants for pollination and fruiting, then it shouldn’t be grown indoors. Plants that are self-pollinating, like tomatoes, peppers, beans, and herbs, thrive indoors.

>> Learn with the curve
Be honest about your skill level before you begin and understand that horticulture can be unpredictable. You can plan every detail, and then a heat wave can come through and destroy half your garden. Some things will remain constant, like aphids and earwigs, while others will test your knowledge and patience. Just remember to breathe in the smells, sights, and sounds of your yard and garden and find a harmonious flex with your space and all its natural nuances.
>> Pick a style…if you want
I suppose my garden style can be categorized as “container,” “urban,”
and “vegetable.” I grow a portion of my own food every year in buckets and pots while minimally caring for the established shrub and flower beds that came with my rental. But there are many garden styles, from natural and country to modern, formal, and desert. A Northwest garden might be asymmetrical with a mix of woody and perennial plants, year-round textures, and a focus on sustainability. Coastal landscapes are have tough plants, silvery foliage, and flexible movement. Japanese gardens are carefully sculpted for a zen atmosphere. Zeroscaping and Xeriscaping are two philosophies that can minimize landscape maintenance and maximize dry climates.
Tour style doesn’t have to fit into a box. Make your space a place to explore and discover your style and what works best for you.
>> Go and grow
Now that you have your plan, have figured out your space and what you can and want to grow, just go out there and do it! A plan will only get you so far. The satisfaction and tranquility that comes with working in the dirt can only be achieved by getting your hands dirty. N

Miniature Indoor Gardening: Terrariums & Bonsai Trees
By S. MICHAL BENNETT Photography by: JOEL RINER
Yardless apartments and win ter seasons can deter a green thumb, and cultivating pot ted plants indoors can be time con suming and damaging to surfaces. But there are two creative ways that you can grow green things in your home all year long that are primarily self-contained, promote mindfulness, and bring a gracious beauty to any space: terrariums and Bonsai trees.
>> The Terrarium
In 1829, doctor and botanist Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward had given up on growing an outdoor garden in the smoke-choked environment of Industrial Revolutionized East London. While conducting an experiment with a moth cocoon and some mold in a sealed glass jar, he discovered that moisture condensed on the glass during the day and returned to the soil in the cool of the evening, creating a self-regulated atmosphere. Within a week, fern and grass began to sprout, and thus the
first terrarium, the Wardian case, was invented.
Terrariums are wonderful for growing succulents, tropical plants, ferns, carnivorous plants, and airplants. Plants thrive in a loose soil medium with drainage below and are either fully or mostly enclosed in a glass container that allows heat and light into the atmosphere as well as access for plant care. Because of their cyclical ecosystem, they don’t require much maintenance. In fact, a Wardian case displayed at London’s 1851 Great Exhibition was said to contain a plant that hadn’t been watered in 18 years.
You can purchase a ready-to-plant terrarium or build your own with only a glass container, plants, gravel or small stones for drainage, Coir Brick starting mix, and a fiberglass screen.
>> The Bonsai
If cared for properly, a bonsai tree will outlive you. Although they
need more care than a terrarium, cultivating bonsai trees is a labor of love and can bring an element of calm to a space.
The art of training and growing living dwarf trees originated in China over 1,000 years ago and is now closely associated with Japanese culture (bonsai is Japanese for “trayplanted). “If you want to get into hobby,” says Bonsai Bob of Gray to Green Nursery, “you have to learn to kill some trees first. There’s a bit of a learning curve.” He advises new bonsai artists to start small and not spend a lot of money on your first trees. Treat them with proper care and they’ll become like a pet or family member. And do your research. If you know where you want to keep it, gather the tools to maintain it (a solid trimmer), and educate yourself on what you’re getting into, you’ll be able in successfully incorporate this living art into your life. RAISING VINES IN YOUR LANDSCAPE
Whether you’ve been work ing on your garden for a while or you’re planning out a new landscape, including a vertical-growing plants can bring a wealth of benefits to your space.
First, vining plants offer a visual break to beds of lower growing plants and shrubs as well as texture to old stumps, tree trunks, retaining walls, and other standing structures. They also can provide shade over trellises and gazebos, cover for plants that thrive in partial sun, and greenery throughout the year, not just during the growing season. In addition to fragrant flowering vines, there are edible fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are climbers. These plants can enhance your vegetable garden and be grown in small spaces as they reach towards the sun.
Vining plants can be broken down into four categories: clinging, tendrillar, twining, and climbing. When choosing which of these plants are a good fit for you, you must consider where they will
be growing, sun exposure, soil composition, proximity plants, and your goals for growing them. Let’s do some exploration.
>> Clinging Climbers
Most often, when I think of climbing plants, I think of ivy. Next to my driveway, there is a 10-foot tall “stump” left over from a violent windstorm that happened before I moved in. The tree was left as tall as the break and is now covered in a thick blanket of Baltic Ivy that digs in deeper year after year. Every fall, the ivy puts on hundreds of cluster flowers. They don’t have an obvious color or scent, but they attract pollinators of every size and shape. The entire ivied stump hums for about a week with the buzz of bees and flurry of insect wings. And every other day of the year, it imbues a rich green hue to that side of the driveway.
Clinging climbers are a two-sided coin. Typically, perennials, they can provide all-season plant cover and
greenery for practically any space. However, their small roots are quite aggressive. If there’s a crack, groove, or soft spot, they’ll work their way into it. My local natural food store grows ivy on trellises along their front windows, and there is one section where the roots found a small space between the glass and the casement and worked their way inside and over the window sill.
Clinging climbers grow best on hard surfaces, such as concrete or masonry that’s well-sealed between bricks. Never grow ivy, creepers, or hydrangea on wood surfaces.
>> Tendrillar Climbers
These vining plants extend their reach using tendrils curled around surrounding structures and other plants and are often edible. Grape vines are perennials, but peas, squash, and cucumbers have to be replanted year after year. I also have a common grape next to my driveway. It has gone many years without proper pruning and has woven its

way along the length of a chain link fence. It pulls back in the winter, but during the summer, it’s a screen from the neighbors and tendrils itself happily into the Baltic ivy and raspberry canes that grow nearby.
>> Twining Climbers
Twining climbers are usually flowering and can be annuals or perennials. They wind their stems around supportive structures like trellises and pillars rather than using tendrils. Examples are wisteria, rattan, and hops. Hops are considered the flowers of the hop plant, and they bloom thick and heady during the summer if provided proper footing and a decent mix of sun and shade.
>> Climbing Plants
These types of plants aren’t necessarily considered vines, but they vigorously grow upward, constantly reaching for the sun. They have no way of attaching themselves to a surface, so if they aren’t trained up with some sort of support system,
they’ll sprawl along the ground. Indeterminate tomatoes, climbing roses, and clematis are these types of vining plants and thrive when their growth is managed with cages, trellises, fencing, and other framework.
Finally, you can grow vining and creeping plants in hanging pots.
They’ll grow over the sides and fall in a variety of ways. However you cultivate your vertical garden, let me encourage you to grow with adding a variety of textures, beauty, and plant companionship in mind. And be proud of the artistry you’ve established just outside your window. N

Growing a Kitchen HERB GARDEN
Whether you’re a chef or simply make an occa sional meal in your home kitchen, growing herbs is an easy way to add fresh flavor to your foods and make a simple start with gar dening. Herbs are a simple addition to your garden and can be compan ion plants to help your vegetables grow and protect them from harmful insects. However, it’s also super easy to grow fresh herbs in your home, re gardless of where you live.
Herbs require minimal effort to start, are easy to grow, save you money at the grocery store, reduce waste, and make your life and diet healthier. How? Well, when you grow your own, you are both oxygen ating the air in your home and add ing herbs to your diet that promote a healthier body. Dried herbs that you buy in a jar oxidize over time, slowly losing their nutrient value – and you have no idea how long they’ve been sitting in those jars waiting for you to buy them. Plants also bring color and pleasant smells to your home, a wel
come refreshment indoors, especially during cold, dark winter seasons.
>> What herbs to grow
An herb can be defined as a plant that doesn’t develop a woody stem, however, that would exclude rose mary. Another description encom passes plants cultivated for their medicinal, culinary, or aromatic qualities. But that definition is extremely broad and can include even mushrooms, which are fungi, and some flowers, shrubs, and veg etables. Overall, we grow herbal plants for their roots, leaves, soft stems, and flowers, and we primar ily nurture them indoors for cooking, aromatics, and other home applica tions. Here are some common herbs grown indoors:
By S. MICHAL BENNETT
Whatever herbs you choose, be sure to follow the package directions for planting seeds or caring for al ready potted plants.
>> Containers
Because they don’t need a lot of soil depth, your choice of containers for growing herbs is almost endless! Plant several herbs in a larger round or long container, or split them up into one per small pot. Hang grow bags and pots in a window where they’ll get sunlight, or group pots of vining herbs, like mint and hops, on cascading shelves to create a wall of greenery. Upcycling containers can also add texture, color, and cre ative fun (paint yogurt containers!) to your home.
Whatever you choose, make sure your containers have drainage holes on the bottom with a system for catching excess water. For exam ple, use a nail and hammer to poke holes, from the outside in, in the bottom of a metal pail. Then place it on an aluminum pie plate on a sunny window sill.

>> Soil, sun, and water
Warning: don’t fill your contain ers with dirt from your yard! The warmth of your home will promote the perfect environment for insect eggs dormant in the soil to hatch, and your kitchen could suddenly be rampant with little black gnats. In stead, choose an organic indoor-spe cific potting soil fertilized for herbs and vegetables available at your lo cal nursery or garden center. Use a little compost or water-soluble fertil izer to amend the soil as needed.
Fully-grown indoor herbs need about six hours of sunlight a day, but your location can face any direc tion. Be careful with young, delicate plants, as they can burn in direct sunlight. Also, if you’re able, open a nearby window or screened door on a balmy day to allow fresh air to circu late around the plants.
Water enough to keep your soil moist but not wet, and make sure your soil and pots are draining well. If water is pooling in the bottom of
your container, your roots will get soggy and rot and the plants will die.
>> Harvesting and using
If you don’t trim and use your herbs, they’ll grow lanky and tough. Annu als like basil and oregano quickly go to seed if not regularly harvested to promote bushing and leaf growth.
Cut your perennial herbs down to about one third of the plant by the end of the growing season, and they’ll grow fuller each year. Woody herbs, such as rosemary and lavender, can also be shaped into miniature shrubs once they’ve been established.
Herbs can be a delicious addition to salads, salsas, and other fresh foods, as well as soups, sauces, pizza, baked goods, and more.
Check out the Nspire website for recipes that use fresh herbs from a classic kitchen garden. N
FRESH HERBCOMPOUND BUTTER
Compound butter is much simpler than it sounds. And it’s delicious on sourdough toast, corn on the cob, potatoes, crackers, and more.
» 1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature or softened
» 1-3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh herbs (try combos like dill and chives or rosemary and sage)
» ½ teaspoon sea salt
» grated garlic and/or red pepper flakes (optional)
In a small bowl, mix the ingredients into the softened butter until evenly distributed.
Scoop the herb butter onto a piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap. Roll into a log using your palms and twist the ends to seal.
Chill overnight or until firm. Flavor ideas: garlic, chive and dill – lemon thyme – honey rosemary sage – sundried tomato basil – pesto – lavender honey.
HERBES DE LA FAMILLE
Herbes de Provence is one of my favorite blends of dried herbs. I use it for a variety of dishes, but you can make your own unique herb blend dried from plants grown in your garden or on your windowsill for you and your family to enjoy every day.
» Parsley (base)
» Thyme (base)
» Fennel (supporting)
» Marjoram (supporting)
» Tarragon (supporting)
» Rosemary (accent)
» Lavender (accent)
1. Start with three parts of a base ingredient, which should be an approachable herb that works well with a variety of dishes and palates.
2. Add one to two supporting ingredients. These tend to be more pungent that the base.
3. Finish with one part accent ingredient using a flavor that will add either punch or balance to your blend.

HOME COMPOSTING
Making your own compost is probably the most impor tant and beneficial thing you can do for your organic garden. The success of your garden depends on the health of your soil, and the health of the soil depends on how you feed and amend it. Fertilizers can add both macro and micronutrients to the dirt, but nitrogen, phosphorus, potas sium, and other nutrients are not typ ically in a form that can be readily ab sorbed by the plants. Compost fosters a holistic array of organisms, includ ing good bacteria, fungi, nematodes, worms, and protozoa, that convert nutrients into bio-available forms and build structure within the soil to max imize air and moisture flow as well as create an oxygen-rich, slightly acidic

environment ideal for both plants and organisms to thrive.
Compost can be purchased in a va riety of forms, but the best compost for your garden is the concoction you cook up yourself, whether it’s solid or a compost tea.
>> What Can I Compost?
Most organic waste can be compost ed, but not all are ideal for home com posting. Do compost kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, cardboard, newspaper, wood chips, lawn trimmings, leaves, and straw. Don’t compost pet waste, bones, meat, diseased plants, or un wanted weeds. The following plants aren’t recommended for compost, can take over your garden, and are tough to kill: morning glory, buttercup,
quack grass, comfrey, and mint.
>> What Bin Should I Use?
The most basic compost system con sists of two to three bins of any size made of wood and wire. With more than one bin, you can easily turn your compost and keep it healthy. (See composting steps below.)
Commercial composters, like the spinning barrels you see at the hard ware store, are great for keeping out pets and wildlife and make it easy to mix your pile. They can be worth the expense if you’re limited on space.
Low tech composters sit on the ground and are easy to move. They are constructed to be breathable while allowing worms and bugs to work their way into the pile and help

with the process. Worm composting is considered an excellent natural meth od, and worm castings are desirable for many gardeners.
>> 5 Steps to Easy Composting
1. Shred and Chop
Whether you’re working with kitch en veggie scraps or end of season to mato plants, shredding or finely chop ping everything that goes into your compost pile will speed up the process.
2. Combine Dry and Wet
A good compost mix contains ingredients rich in carbon and rich in nitrogen. Dry, brown materials, like dead leaves, hay, and straw, are rich in carbon. “Wet greens”, like grass clippings and kitchen scraps, are nitrogen-rich. Choose a variety
of browns and greens, mix them well, and you’ll have a balance of nutrients.
3. Size Matters
Your compost pile should be at least 3’ x 3’ x 3’ to promote the amount of heat needed for healthy decomposi tion. Too big, and it will be difficult to mix. Too small, and it won’t “cook.”
4. Water Your Pile
Make sure your compost stays moist but not soggy. It should feel like a damp sponge to the touch. If you live in a wet climate, you may need to cov er it with a tarp to prevent it becom ing too wet.
5. Mix It Up
Turning and mixing your compost adds air, which is needed for organ
isms to thrive and moisture to flow. Movement also inhibits the growth of bad bacteria and molds. If using wood and wire bins, poke the sides and top with a pitchfork to open up air holes. Use a shovel to move compost from one bin to another, turning the inside out. Tumblers make mixing compost as simple as a few turns of the handle.
>> Kitchen Composting
A simple way to start composting and reduce food waste is to kitchen compost. Blend or chop any scraps and dispose of them in a countertop compost bin or breathable pail (avail able online). This can also start the composting process, if you have out door bins. Add a stacking worm farm for a steady supply of humus to break down your countertop compost. N

Northwest Craftsman with a modern touch
By MICHAELA DELAVAN Photography By JOEL RINER
This Northwest Craftsman style home is infused with modern elements.
Jessica Frakes, Aspen Home’s interior designer, gave the traditional Craftsman gable roof a modern twist by incorporating metal and minimizing the decorative brackets under the eaves. Natural wood and stone finishes throughout the home continue the classic Craftsman style, while Frakes incorporated updated fixtures and the downstairs flex room’s metal and glass barn doors for a modern touch.
“I love mixing and matching materials to create a design that’s unique and interesting, and I think we accomplished that,” Frakes said.
A large foyer welcomes guests into the nearly 3,000-square-foot home, and an open floor plan with a large living space connected to the kitchen is the perfect space for entertaining. The home features four bedrooms

“This home is very dramatic, and each room has something stunning about it,” said Frakes. “The powder room is my favorite; it has black painted board-and-batten walls with a crystal chandelier that really make the accents pop.”
Frakes carried black and white throughout the home, allowing the homeowner to use whatever accent colors to make it their own.

The master suite has the prime living space, with access to the covered patio from both the bedroom and its private office. A deep, standalone tub topped with a stunning chandelier is framed by dual vanities, while a roomy walkin shower with contrasting tile work and a bench completes the space. The walk-in closet also features custom his-and-hers sections.
The entry to the home is breathtaking. Rough hewn beams and natural stone on the pillars and gas fireplace hold the vaulted ceiling high overhead, creating an open and welcoming environment with a rustic touch.
The main floor is dominated by an open floor plan design that creates a communal living space all the way from the amazing butler’s pantry through to the great room.
“The home embraces family gatherings and invites celebrations at every opportunity,” said Rosenberger. “The home was also set up with multi-generational living in mind.”
Defined living areas throughout the home provide plenty of space for the Ramseys as well as for visits from friends and family. With two bedrooms and a rec room over the garage, as well as the guest suite with a separate entrance, everyone can have their own space to enjoy their privacy in this wooded location. N

and a neutral color scheme that plays off the contrast between black and white. Custom features such as wood accent panels, stone walls and rough-hewn beams provide the warm, rustic touch associated with both farmhouse and European provincial design.
La Bolle chose custom metal pieces throughout the home, including the kitchen hood, beam turn buckles, mirror brackets and ceilinghung mounts to complement the Bertazzoni appliances and give the home a unique flair.
The open floor plan allows for a variety of uses, from game nights to holiday gatherings, and creates an inviting space full of warmth, coziness and belonging. A variety of tile work and textures add a playful touch throughout the home.
La Bolle kept the stain, paint colors and natural stone the same on the interior and exterior to create a sense of continuity and cohesiveness between the home’s interior and exterior design.
“Our spring and fall can be chilly, so we made sure to have plenty of outdoor entertaining space that had access to the double-sided fireplace,” La Bolle said. “We have long winters here, so we wanted the home to capture the warmth that some European chalets have.”
An abundance of both covered and uncovered outdoor spaces provide ample opportunities for the homeowners to appreciate the great outdoors, with or without leaving the comfort of their home. The seating area by the waterfall is a centerpiece of the beautiful landscaping.

The front kitchen, designed by Tripp, is a new floorplan and unique addition to Timbered Ridge’s portfolio. It’s easy to access the kitchen from the spacious master suite, which also conveniently connects to the laundry room.
“The kitchen and master suite are my favorite rooms in this home,” said Tripp. “The master suite is a dream; the walk-in tiled shower is one of my favorite ones we’ve done. There are two very large walk-in closets and a large soaking tub in its own private little niche.” N

MODERN RIVER LIVING
By MICHAELA DELAVAN Photography by JOEL RINER
Set on a corner lot with no western neighbors, this 3,728 square-foot home is perfectly situated to appropriately awe visitors and residents as they enter the neighborhood driving east on Bellerive Lane.
“The Riverstone area, specifically Bellerive Lane, is known for its ur ban living and modern architecture,” said Nick Forsberg of Atlas Building Group. “We pushed the modern con cept with this particular home with the incorporation of parapet walls, a rooftop patio and black commercial windows across the front elevation.”
Wall-to-wall windows maximize both river views and natural sunlight on both levels of the home. A rooftop deck with an 8-foot fire pit and outdoor furniture adds a third level from which to enjoy views of the Spokane River, as well as views of the resort in downtown Coeur d’Alene and beautiful sunsets to the west.
The main level’s open floor plan is conducive to entertaining guests with the kitchen, butler’s pantry, dining area and living room all in one area. Floating, LED-lit concrete stairs lead to the second level above a Zen rock garden and a wine station.

“The backlit cavity behind the black walnut accent wall behind the floating stairs was built to have a wave design and gaps just wide enough to allow the light from behind to shine through,” said Forsberg. “This is a unique architectural feature that really shows well during the evening when it is dark outside.”
A large, modern light fixture and 20-feet ceilings connect the two floors, while black stainless steel cable railings ensure safety. The second level has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, as well as additional living areas.
“This property also has a completely built out apartment or mother-inlaw quarter with a kitchen over the garage,” said Forsberg. “There is a dual-sided deadbolt on a fire door that separates the main house from the apartment to allow for optional
living as part of main house or separated for an Airbnb-style rental, which includes a separate entrance with additional stairs directly to it.”
Most of the home’s lighting, blinds and speakers are run from a Control4 system, which is commonly used in most smart homes to give the owner

The master suite is a show-stealer. A full mirror wraps behind and above the bed with backlit LED lighting and custom sassafras-stained wood placed across mirrors in modern slat style design, which provides an additional tasteful, intriguing element. Black and white contrasts continue into the master bath with a striking accent wall framing the deep soaking tub, a tall walk-in shower and metal barn doors that lead to either the restroom or the walk-in closet.
“It’s a beautiful modern home with unique accents that make it different than 99% of homes in Coeur d’Alene and it’s near great restaurants, shopping and entertainment,” Forsberg said. N
