Fáilte / Welcome

Your SU President

Haigh a chairde! My name is Faye Ní Dhomhnaill and I am your Students’ Union President for the 2024/2025 academic year. I’m delighted to have been elected following on from a great year as Leas-Uachtarán don Ghaeilge.

We’re going to have an incredible year, with loads of fun opportunities for fundraising. I’m a Law, English and Performing Arts Graduate, and am currently studying my Dioploma sa Ghaeilge. I’ve been a college dropout, a fulltime student, and now a part-time student, so I hope I can attribute that to having insight to any issue that can come into the office. I cannot wait to meet you all, and to help you have the best year the University of Galway has ever seen. Ní neart go cuir le chéile!

Your SU Vice President/ Welfare and Equality Officer

Hello folks! My name is Chloe Anderson, and I am delighted to be the 2024/2025 VP for Welfare and Equality. I come from Kilkenny and have been an absolute student activism nerd since my teenage years, through being a Provincial Scout Representative, a Regional Officer for the ISSU, and the chair of my own student council.

Since coming to college I have both seen and experienced the absolute highs and lows that university brings, and my hope is to be able to help in any way I can. Talk to you soon!

Your SU Vice President/ Education Officer

Hi everyone, I’m Tom Forde and I am your Vice President for Education. I’m from Sligo originally and I am a BA Government graduate. I have previously been a class representative and Arts Convenor within the union.

I am so excited to represent every student and fight for your rights on campus, from inclusivity, helping with academic issues, to fees and much more. The Union and college as a community is only as strong as its membership so if you have any ideas, queries, or you’re struggling make sure to drop in and say hello!

Your SU Vice President for the Irish Language

Hello everyone, my name is Julieanne Ní Mhullaoidh and I’m from Achill, Co. Mayo. I was raised with Irish and it’s my aim to protect the language rights of students here in Ollscoil na Gaillimhe. I studied Irish and Translation and I was involved with various Irish committees and societies.

I want to give everyone the opportunity to learn and speak Irish this year. We’re a bilingual university and I hope that this year it’ll be clear to all! Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or need a bit of advice!

How do I get involved? Class Rep elections will be held from the start of the year via the YourSpace platform until every class is represented. Once you are elected you will receive training and attend Class Rep and Comhairle Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn meetings during the year to act as the voice of your class.

The Student LevyIt’s Your Money

All University of Galway students pay the Student Levy in addition to annual fees.

The Student Levy is used to fund a number of student activities such as the Students’ Union; Clubs; Societies; Student Health Unit; Campus Radio; and the CÉIM Peer Learning Programme.

The Levy is required because the University does not provide adequate funding for these services. Other colleges have much better facilities that their students do not have to subsidise, and their students’ union, clubs and societies also receive better funding.

This is something your Students’ Union is always working on. The Student Levy was reduced from €224 per student to €140 per student which means University of Galway students are no longer paying the highest levy in the country.

The Student Levy is distributed as follows:

Students’ Union

€40.00 Societies

Clubs

Student Health Unit

Áras na Mac Léinn

Flirt FM

Student Project Fund

The Student Levy is your money so if you have any questions about how it is spent, be sure to ask! Simply contact the SU President, Faye, on su.president@universityofgalway.ie

The Students’ Union presents its accounts to Comhairle Comhaltas na Mac Léinn (SU Council) each year and they are also available to download from our website.
