New Year’s Eve .... Hello 2010! Please party responsibly and don’t drink and drive.

Publisher Staff

Letter From The

PUBLISHER - Paul Allen

Happy Holidays! This is by far my favorite time of the year as I love Christmas! Now don’t get me wrong, I like receiving gifts but I honestly like shopping for other people more. I get excited about finding that perfect gift and watching the recipient’s face when the box is opened. I like it when I see a shirt or a sweater and I just know it fits that person’s style and taste. I love the feeling when I am shopping for somebody and find that one item I know he/she will enjoy .... it’s a wonderful feeling to have! That’s why I don’t give gift certificates or generic gifts. I try to find that “something special” when I’m shopping. Having three grandchildren (and 2 more on the way!) makes Christmas even more fun and I can’t wait to jump into Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, Target and the other stores .... fight the crowds .... complain about the prices .... make my shopping list and start buying stuff! I want to welcome Mr. Greg Snow to the NuYou staff. Greg has been publishing magazines (Tampa Bay’s Best Magazine) and doing trade shows in the Tampa Bay area for over 25 years. He brings many new and exciting ideas to NuYou along with numerous advertisers who trust his judgement and word. We are excited about our future as Greg will be a big part of our growth in 2010. I hope you like our new “Restaurant Guide” and our expanded “Events Calendar”. We also have added new advertisers and I sincerely hope you visit them and say you saw their ad here in NuYou Magazine! I would like to invite you to join Tracy Allen and myself at the Winter Craft Market Art Show that takes place on December 6, 2009 in Palm Harbor at 315 Orange Street. Tracy will be debuting her photo gallery and I must say, she takes awesome photographs. She will have them on sale in various sizes and frames. I want to wish all of you a very Happy Holiday Season. Please remember the real meaning of Christmas and don’t get too crazy on New Year’s Eve!

HEALTHY TIPS!

If you have brittle nails it is one of the classic symptoms of an underactive thyroid. Others include fatigue, dry skin, constipation and weight gain. Many of these are undiagnosed as they also accompany the normal aging process. Brittle nails can also come from a lack of vitamin D and nails that are pitted or dimpled could be an early sign of psoriasis. Make sure you monitor your nails as you get older and listen to what they have to say!

It sounds simple but a new study published by the American Physiological Society says that if you are over the age of 40 and cannot touch your toes, you could have stiff arteries. As we all know, hardening of the arteries can raise blood pressure and is a major cause of heart disease. Research has shown that exercise helps slow the stiffening of arteries and overall flexibility also helps keep arteries from stiffening. The American Diabetes Association has a new interactive tool called “My Health Advisor” and it will help you assess your risk for type-2 diabetes, heart disease and strokes. Go to www.CheckUpAmerica.org/MHA for more information!

If you are a male over the age of 40, you might not want to read this but .... a study With the Holiday Season here, I have some good of approximately 11,000 men news! Just another hydrogenated oil or palm reason to think before you kernel oil. drink!

If you want to “go green” here are a few tips .... 1) Turn off all open faucets as an open faucet lets about 5 gallons of water flow every two minutes. Does the water have to be on when you brush your teeth? Can you cut your shower time by 30 seconds? How about filling your sink and turning off the water when you are washing your dishes? All of these can help conserve water .... 2) Buy recycled toilet paper. If every household in America did this we could save nearly 1-million trees .... 3) Turn off your computer monitor when you are not using your computer. The screen savers cost you about $50 per year in electricity costs .... 4) Lastly, shut off your car if it’s going to sit idle for more than 30 seconds so you don’t waste gasoline!

China has signed an agreement with the American firm First Solar to build a 2-gigawatt, photovoltaic farm in the Mongolian desert to produce solar electricity. The plant is scheduled for completion in 2019 and will be part of the largest in the world.

Many “human” foods are dangerous and even poisonous to pets and here are a few examples: 1) Chocolate stimulates the nervous system and the heart and is especially dangerous to dogs because they will eat large quantities in a short period of time. 2) Grapes and Raisins are damaging to your pet’s kidneys. 3) Garlic & Onions can cause anemia by damaging red blood cells 4) Alcoholic Drinks can depress the nervous system and 5) Avocados damage heart muscles, especially in birds. So, make sure your pet eats correctly. You don’t eat Fido’s dog chow, so he shouldn’t eat your food!

THE DOCTORS ARE IN! doctors Rx Us

1010 East Busch Blvd. • Tampa • 813-935-7987 There are thousands of doctors in the Tampa Bay area but none as unique and functional as Doctors Rx Us, located at 1010 East Busch Blvd. in Tampa. Not only is it a general medical walk-in clinic that specializes in medical pain management, alcohol/ cigarette detoxification, pap smears and auto accidents, but Doctors Rx Us is also a complete family practice. The facility is family-owned and operated. In 1992, Cheri York started out as a chiropractic clinic and evolved into a full fledged medical center. She saw the need for a local medical center that could help the “everyday person” and changed her focus. “I know it sounds a bit corny and the phrase is over used but we truly “treat our patients like family”. My husband, daughter, and grandchildren all work here and it’s the only way we know to run our business. We have had patients that have been seeing our doctors for ten years and they constantly refer their friends and family. Our doctors take time with our patients and people really don’t want to go anywhere else”, Cheri said. “Today’s health care is different and we truly fit a need. A patient can see us and not have to be referred to other specialists. We can do numerous things right here under one roof. We not only save the patient time and money, but the insurance companies as well”, she added. The other side of Doctors Rx Us is a complete wellness center / medi spa that features hair removal, skin rejuvenation, microderabrasion and botox treatments. When you are talking about the human body, there isn’t much that Doctors Rx Us can’t do! I would like to thank Cheri, her daughter Jaime (Director of Operations), Warren McGill (CFO) and Bob Garrison (Administrator) for their hospitality. NuYou Magazine highly recommends Doctors Rx Us we are proud to have them as one of our advertisers!

Last month the City of Clearwater hosted the Foster Grant Ironman 70.3 World Championship and the event drew a whopping 1,800 athletes to our area. The event started with a 1.2-mile swim on Clearwater Beach then moved to a 56-mile bike ride through Pinellas County and concluded with a 13.1-mile run! NuYou’s own Nancy Verzi had a cousin who participated in the triathlon. Laurie Walsh completed the entire course in 5 hours, 35 minutes and 28 seconds. The winner in the ladies division was Great Britain’s Julie Dibens who set a course in the record time of 3 hours, 59 minutes and 33 seconds. The men’s champion was Germany’s Michael Raelert who also set a course record in the time of 3 hours, 34 minutes and 4 seconds. NuYou would just like to say wow! We also want to congratulate Laurie and the other 1,799 people who took part in this agonizing, gut wrenching, grueling event. You are all amazing!

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR!

by debi Cianci

3 4 5 6

The first thing I want to say is Happy Holidays to everybody! This month I have a couple of quick “up-styles”. For shoulder length and longer hair, put your hair in a pony tail up high and do cascade curls on the entire amount of hair in the pony tail. Then take small sections of the curled hair and bobby pin it to the scalp. After that is completed, start stacking the hair on top of the other curls and fan them out. If you have a couple of straight hairs, that’s ok …. messy is a good look for this style. It’s ok to have a couple of curls around your face as that creates a very sexy look. Now if you have shorter hair, you can flip out the bottom all the way to the crown of your head, then flat iron around your face or tuck your hair behind your ears. Be sure to always add height to the crown area because everyone looks better with a little fullness on top. Now this style is for someone with very long hair. Take a section from the crown to your bang area and tease it up! Then take both sides and pull it back to make it flat to your head. Smooth out your teased area but leave the height. Lastly, place a nice clip to hold the hair.

1 2

now here are six mistakes that can age you …… 1) If your hair is ultra short you could look older. So, if you wear your hair short, make it wispy around your face and edges. Also add a little teasing to the crown area. This will create a more soft and sexy look. 2) If your hair is too long, it will pull your features down, we call this a anti-face lift! Instead, keep some length like a “choppy bob” that sits just below the collarbone.

3) If your hair is too dark, it can make you look harder and older. It will cast shadows on your skin so your wrinkles look more pronounced. Instead go a little lighter around your face, using highlights. 4) If your hair is too light and your hair has the same tone as your complexion, it can wash you out. Use a little darker contrast that will give you a healthy glow. 5) If your hair has a gray-yellowish color, it can make you look much older. Add gloss with a little color or low lights, not many, just a few around your face. If you don’t want to add low lights, use a purple base shampoo with baking soda for about 15 minutes then rinse. Your yellow hair will turn whiter or more silver and you will lose that “in-between” color. 6) If your hair is too extreme, like very odd colors (too red or too many colors) it may look unorganized. Leave the bold wild color for the younger crowd. Stay with a more natural color. Just tone it down a little. Sometimes the more you try to look young, the older you really look! Finally, remember bangs always soften your look. Full bangs or wispy bangs look fun and sexy! Enjoy the season and cooler weather. I would like to thank Un You magazine . I have enjoyed all the new business. My new clients are very pleased with the magazine and myself. Thanks, Debi

nuYou Legal Eagle by: Jeffrey “Jack” Gordon

The Law of Looking Good A government can ban even simple spa or salon treatments. It’s true. In 37 states including Florida, lawmakers have enacted specific legislation to regulate even simple cosmetology practices including such uncomplicated processes as hair braiding and shampooing. Florida statute section 477.012 reads in part as follows: “The legislature deems it necessary in the interest of public health to regulate the practice of cosmetology in this state. However, restrictions shall be imposed only to the extent necessary to protect the public from significant and discernable danger to health and not in a manner which will unreasonably affect the competitive market.” In other states, legislative efforts have been met with controversy and protest. For example, braiding or “cornrowing” hair requires neither the use of chemicals or relaxants. Nevertheless, the State of Maryland decided that to practice the craft of hairbraiding in Maryland, one needed a State-issued cosmetology license, which requires 1,500 hours of training in an approved school and an examination that includes demonstrating knowledge of hairstyles that had nothing to do with braiding. After a number of lawsuits, the State Cosmetology Board unofficially exempted hairbraiding entirely from any type of cosmetology regulation.

Nevertheless, salon owners have continued to petition the Board for an official exemption. The owners suggest that and hairbraiding salons should be inspected to ensure health and safety, but other irrelevant cosmetology regulations should be eliminated because they serve no legitimate governmental objectives and only stifle competition. This past spring, controversy erupted in New Jersey when the state Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling proposed a ban on Brazilian waxing after two women reported being injured in their quest for a smooth bikini line. Both women were hospitalized for infections following socalled “Brazilian” bikini waxes. The Board issued a statement in March stating that such waxing can be dangerous as the hot wax can irritate or tear delicate skin in the bikini area, resulting in infections, ingrown hairs and rashes. For salon owners, discontinuing the popular service would have meant a substantial drop in business, especially as summer swimsuit season neared. Protestors flooded the Board with objections and complaints. One spa owner declared that her customers’ bikini lines were nobody’s business but their own. Those opposed to the potential ban argued that banning the practice would backfire because many customers would travel across state lines for treatment and others might be injured trying to wax themselves. Ultimately, the decision makers tabled the proposal and this past New Jersey summer is reported to have gone especially “smoothly”.

For The Love of Shoes

By Jay Burnett, Fashion Editor

The must-have style of shoe for winter would be the Eighties style booties. They are the perfect compliment for skinny pants, skirts, or dresses. Yves Saint Laurent has a very popular hidden-flat platform bootie; and pointed booties by Chloe or Roberto Cavalli are also great choices. Gucci sports a stylish punk-style with elements such at studs. Boots with fringes, also by Gucci, are perfect for more of the hippy or

folk style sort of individual (so hot in fashion right now)! Photographer: DrLloydPhotography.com

If you have a love of shoes, then settle in, this article is for you! Maybe you don’t have a closetful of Manolo’s like Carrie Bradshaw, but you can be just as stylish with some good choices this season.

Popular shoe accessories for this holiday season include buckles and shoestrings. Shoestrings remain a strong trend after several seasons, and provide a simple solution for upgrading those outdated sneakers. You can have all the beautiful outfits in the world but if you don’t coordinate with the right shoes, you just can’t look good. Make sure you look good from top to bottom … Happy Holidays!

“What should I be wearing this year?” seems to be the question on everyone’s mind. Well, here is a hint: you should be working on your shoulders. When I say shoulders – yes, my fellow 1980’s fashionista – I mean the shoulder pad is back! This seems to be the trend for the coming year. Also, we are no longer wearing the wide-wedge heel, the shoe that you have gained balance and comfort in wearing. No, shoe trends are going back to the tall, skinny stiletto, and as you wobble back to the stiletto heel,

the most exciting fashion newcomer is the harem pant and harem shorts. With the less sophisticated eye, and one on a Miami Beach Fairway, these probably look a lot like incontinence pants. Bur pair a really hot pair of black stilettos and your shoulder-padded blouse - you guessed it - and you are ready to take a trip down memory lane. Maybe you will pass a shiny bright Deloren ready to take you back to the future!

Both comfy and ultra chic, this soft knit pant flaunts a hot new harem silhouette. Elastic waistband with tie; ultra low rise sits low on hip (may also be worn at waist, as shown) $26.95 www.newyorkandcompany.com

MR. TAMPA ....

COVER STORY

by Paul Allen

nuYou

Radio, television, sports contests, special events .... no matter where you go in Tampa Bay you have a good chance to see or hear Jack Harris. With 39 years on the Tampa Bay airwaves, Jack has seen our area grow from a small town into the large metropolis we are today. He moved to the area from West Virginia in 1970 when he went to work for WFLA 970 AM. With the exception of a one year hiatus (when he worked at a station in Washington, DC) Jack has been a huge force in the Tampa Bay radio market. Jack help create the Q-Morning Zoo with Cleveland Wheeler and that program was rated #1 for numerous years. His next move was helping to create the Power Pig on 93.3 FM and once again top ratings followed. Today, Jack is part of the number one rated morning show in Tampa Bay, back on WFLA 970 AM. You have also seen Jack on many television and sports programs and he is always hosting area concerts, shows and events. Jack met his beautiful wife Joy when he was hosting a television show on FOX-TV13. She was a guest, Jack was impressed, he asked her out and the rest is history! They have an 18 year old son (Jackson) who attends The University of Tampa and they have a lovely home in the area. If anybody deserves the title of Mr. Tampa Bay ... it’s Jack Harris. When asked the biggest things he’s witnessed here, Jack said, “The coming together of Tampa, St.Petersburg and Clearwater. When I first moved here it was like three separate cities who didn’t get along. I honestly believe the area’s sports teams have bridged that gap. The Rowdies were the first team to incorporate Tampa “Bay” in their name

• December 2009

and when we ran a contest on WFLA to name the new NFL franchise, the Tampa Buccaneers was selected as the winner. However, we made sure that “Bay” was added to the name. Now all teams say Tampa Bay and the rest of the country also sees us as a united front.” Joy is the “Jack of all Trades” in the Harris household ... if a door knob needs fixing, shoes need shining or a picture needs to be hung .... Joy is the one to get the job done! She is an excellent cook and together they make a great team. As a matter of fact, on December 9 they will debut their new cookbook “Easy-Breezy Florida Cooking” at The Venue, 2675 Ulmerton Road in Clearwater from 5:30pm till 7:30pm. “This is Joy’s project and I only helped a little. She’s a professional food connoisseur and I am very excited for her and the book,” Jack said. NuYou is proud to have the Harris Family on the cover of our December issue. Family is what the Holidays are all about and the Harris Family stands for credibility, togetherness, teamwork and love. We would like to wish them good luck with the new cookbook and we hope to hear and see Jack for many years to come here in Tampa Bay!

FEATURE RECIPE A GREAT BEGINNING AND

A SWEET ENDING!

By Tracy Allen

Happy Holidays! Here are two simple recipes to start and end your feast. I figure most folks have their favorite dishes around the holidays and I know my family would be pretty upset with me if I went and changed one of their faves. This month I have had the honor of preparing a special Greek Salad from Joy Harris’ new cookbook “Easy-Breezy Florida Cooking”. For salad lovers this is a must!

Then to finish the meal a low sugar bread pudding. I hope you enjoy making these as much as I did. Thanks to everyone who has sent me messages about how much they enjoy this feature. Not a month goes by without someone saying to me “I made your recipe this month and it was great”. So keep the comments coming - I love it!

EASY GREEK SALAD Serves 4-6

Greek dressing

1 head iceberg lettuce, washed & torn into bite sized pieces

½ cup white vinegar

2 tomatoes, seeded & chopped 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded & chopped ½ cup crumbled Feta cheese 1 small green bell pepper, seeded & chopped 2 radishes, thinly sliced 12 kalamata olives

½ cup light olive oil 1 teaspoon dried oregano flakes 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper Mix all ingredients in a jar with a tight fitting lid and shake well. copyright 2009 Seaside Publishing

note:

I added some onion to give my salad a little kick.

12 green olives In a large bowl, toss the lettuce with tomatoes, cucumber, cheese, bell pepper, radishes, and olives. Pour Greek Dressing over salad and toss again. Garnish with sliced beets and Greek peppers.

QUICK TIP!

Try adding under the salad, a reduced calorie potato salad for that traditional Greek taste!

BANANA OATMEAL BREAD PUDDING Serves: 9

Prep time: 20 min.

Bake time: 35 min.

InGREdIEnTS: 2 cups Fat Free Milk 2 slightly beaten eggs 3 TB packed brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

5 cups dry oatmeal bread cubed 2 med bananas halved lengthwise and sliced 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

dIRECTIOnS: 1. In a medium bowl whish together milk, eggs, brown sugar, vanilla and pumpkin pie spice; set aside. In a 2 quart square baking dish toss together bread cubes, walnuts and banana slices. Pour egg mixture evenly over bread mixture. Toss until bread is moistened. 2. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 - 40 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Optional Lemon Butter Sauce: 2 TB butter 2 TB sugar 1 egg yolk, beaten 1 TB water

watchout!

Adding the sauce increases your sugar and fat intake. So extra reps at the gym maybe in order after enjoying this treat!

In a small saucepan, melt butter. Stir in the sugar, egg yolk and water. Cook and stir over medium-low heat for 4 minutes or until sugar is dissolved and mixture comes to a boil. Remove from the heat. Serve warm with bread pudding.

Check back next month for another healthy alternative to the everyday dinner. If you would like to submit a recipe for consideration send it with complete instructions to tracyallen@pacpublishing.com - The idea behind this monthly column is to provide a healthy alternative and to make sure it’s easy for an every day cook, like myself. So, keep in mind your dish will be prepared by me before we print it to ensure its practicality.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

CATCH TWENTY - THREE

I love to eat and I have visited hundreds of restaurants from New York to Miami to Chicago to San Francisco. I have had wonderful salads, tender steaks, succulent lobster and magnificent fish. I have had very affordable meals and very expensive meals. When I was asked to do a restaurant review at Catch Twenty-Three, I was expecting a good meal but that is not what I received. Catch Twenty-Three is located at 10103 Montague Street in the very quaint area of West Park Village. The restaurant has been around for six and a half years and is owned and operated by Mr. Rob Wickner. The menu features a well rounded wine list and a nice combination of appetizers, salads, chicken, steak, pork, fish and sushi. I ordered the Surf and Turf (an eight-ounce Maine lobster tail and a six-ounce filet mignon with a red wine sauce and mashed potatoes). My two friends ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and the Scallops. I have to honestly tell you .... my Surf and Turf was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. I was expecting a good meal but I received a great meal! My steak was perfectly cooked and melted in my mouth. The lobster was sweet as honey and the mashed potatoes were delectable. I sampled a delicious

Scallop and the Sea Bass was nothing short of fantastic. We ended our dining experience with a trio of mini cupcakes that were delicious. I was tempted to try the

“gourmet cupcake of the day”, but just couldn’t eat any more! Catch Twenty-Three greatly surpassed my expectations. Our waitress did a wonderful job; my iced tea was never empty and she checked on us numerous times. The restaurant’s decor is upscale, yet casual. Prices are affordable and even though I ordered the most expensive item on the menu, I felt my meal was worth every penny! I highly recommend Catch TwentyThree to everybody and I plan to return in the very near future. If you plan on experiencing this wonderful restaurant you will leave happy, full and content!

Shopping Tips with CHEF ALFIE NuYou is proud to introduce you to Chef Alfie who has been a chef in the Tampa Bay area for numerous years. His monthly column will be interesting, informative and full of cooking ideas, shopping tips, food tid-bits and other culinary advice. Hello nuYou Readers! My name is Chef Alfie and my first column will deal with the Do’s and Don’ts about shopping. It is something that we all have to do no matter if we enjoy it or not, so we might as well have a plan before we step into our favorite food store .... Here are the do’s ....... a) Stay away from pre-made or pre-packaged meals. They are very expensive, not very healthy and really don’t taste very good ... in my opinion. They are convenient and that’s about it! b) Plan your meals ahead of time. You will be able to utilize your purchases for more than one meal and that will save time and money. c) Plan your shopping on days when you have time. Rushing through the aisles is an advantage to the supermarket and a disadvantage to your wallet! d) Plan all of your vegetables and starches with your main meals. This enables you to eat healthy and spend your money wisely. Here are the don’ts ..... a) Do not purchase an item unless you know how to prepare it.

nuYou

• December 2009

b) Stay away from the spur of the moment raids on the supermarket. You will purchase items that look terrific at that time, but are really not needed. Think about these things: why are you buying that item, what exactly is it, what are you going to do with it and what is it going to taste like when you’re done with it? c) Do not go shopping if you are hungry. You will end up purchasing items you crave at that particular time and not necessarily items you need. d) Focus your shopping on what your family likes as a team, not just one person. Purchase some items in larger quantities so you can turn them into two or three great healthy meals. You can also turn many leftovers into new meals that are healthy and taste as good (if not better) than the original. Obviously, most of what I am saying takes time and some knowledge. I am sorry to say, if you don’t make the time, it will be very difficult to save money. I am here to help you become “savvy” in your grocery shopping, basic food preparation and cooking. My goal is to help you purchase items that enable you to make healthy, well balanced meals for your entire family - that tastes great and saves money. If you would like additional information or want to “learn all the basics” e-mail me at chefalfie@tampabay.rr.com. Please included your telephone number if you would like to speak to me.

THE HOLIdAY SEASOn... TIME TO GET FAT!!! Tiz the season to get big and fat.... fa la la la la! Pies, cakes and candies are where it’s at.... fa la la la la.... eat until I can’t stand up or walk.... fa la la la la.... eat so much I don’t have time to talk.... fa la la la la! Yes, the month of December is when we all stuff ourselves full of munchies, candies, pies, cakes, turkey, ham, breads, stuffing and other assorted goodies. When it’s all over and done, we get mad at ourselves in January and make New Year’s Resolutions to lose weight. We feel terrible when we step on the scale or look in the mirror and wonder what we could have done different. Hopefully, here are a few tips that can help you control your appetite this Holiday Season:

1)

Make Sure You Are Actually Hungry Before You Eat- This sounds easy but before you automatically pick up that Christmas cupcake, try to rate your hunger. If you give yourself a rating of one, you are probably not really hungry. However, if your hunger rating is a four or five.... it’s time to chow down! Remember, being hungry happens sometimes because you are stressed or bored. Not all hunger is physical. You can drink a glass of water and many times that will curb your desire to eat. Try to take your mind off that cupcake and talk to a friend, take a walk, play a computer game or pick up a book. Your mind can over-ride your stomach unless you are truly hungry.

2) Stop Eating Just to Eat- That’s right...don’t just

eat because there is food in sight. If you are at a party, you don’t have to consume a dozen mini hot dog weenies just because they are in front of you and you don’t have to take a handful of chips

control yourself.

because you can see the bowl. You have to have some type of restraint and remember that two-thirds of all American adults are overweight or obese. You cannot wish and hope away those extra pounds...you just have to say enough is enough and

3)

When You Eat, Control the Portions- Yes, theChristmas ham is delicious and those mashed potatoes are scrumptious but you don’t have to over do things. Eat a nice amount but don’t over do things. You know you will be eating a piece of pumpkin pie with cool whip after dinner, as well as a piece of Aunt Martha’s homemade fudge, so save room! You control your mouth and stomach not the other way around!

4)

Be Patient and Eat Slow- Don’t overfill your plate and take your time eating. By slowing down, enjoying the texture and aroma of food and pacing yourself .... you can actually fool your stomach into thinking it is full. A clean plate brings a sense of accomplishment to the mind and if you are eating smaller bites and taking more time, your stomach will steadily process and digest your food. You can walk away from the table feeling full and satisfied. There they are...will these tips help you control the terror of “Holiday Eating”? Only you can answer that question. Please do your best to think about what (and how much) you eat this month. Remember, it’s easier to put on 4-5 pounds than it is to take them off! Happy Holidays and Happy Eating!

LOOK AND FEEL YOUNGER . . . . . HEALTHFULLY

Laura Gunden, AP, DOM began her medical studies at the University of Florida. During a study-abroad program in France, she experienced alternative treatments for healing in conjunction with traditional Western medicine. The focus on restoring patients’ health through integrating both alternative and traditional practices broadened her interests and redirected her studies towards alternative medicine. Upon returning to the U.S., she attended the East West College of Natural Medicine, earning degrees in Professional Health Sciences and Oriental Medicine. Further studies and certifications include: Cosmetic Acupuncture, Homotoxicology, Auriculotherapy and Acupuncture Injection Therapy.

Great news about the advancement in natural alternatives to plastic surgery, liposuction and botox! For some, the cost and risks of allopathic treatments are too high, yet results are sought to curb the signs of ageing. After over a decade of research and development, European dermatologists, scientists, homeopaths and acupuncturists combined efforts have transformed aesthetic medicine. Through combined techniques of acupuncture, homeopathy and mesotherapy, healthy solutions are yielding beautiful results. The secret lies in treating the underlying physiological processes of the body. Homeopathics target the cells and improve metabolic processes and drainage. Acupuncture points are used to stimulate vital energy, increase circulation and stimulate muscles. Mesotherapeutic technique links it all together. Tiny amounts of homeopathic solutions are injected intradermally to the skin, the largest organ of the body. Slowly, the solution absorbs into the dermis, where all of renewal processes occur. So, the result is healthier cells, healthier tissues, and more beautiful skin. The procedure is minimally invasive and causes no dangerous side effects. Wholistic treatment may not be the right option for someone comfortable having surgery and expecting a new look or body. Results are not comparable to surgical results. However, considerable differences in facial lines, wrinkles,

hyperpigmentation, dark circles, puffiness, cellulite “orange peel” look and overall skin tone can be obtained. The skin is more plump and toned, yielding a more youthful appearance. Fine lines vanish, deep lines become finer. The skin looks better, because the overall health of the body is better. As an acupuncture physician, my approach in helping people to heal is always to restore balance. This requires time . . . . . more time in chronic cases, less in acute conditions. Treating the skin is like treating other organ systems. It is a process and cannot be rushed or forced. In order for true healing to occur, and lasting results to be achieved, you have to get to the root of the problem. An individual’s body constitution and overall state of health are factors in determining the length and number of treatments. Generally, a series of 8-10 treatments is recommended. Maintenance varies from person to person, but a minimum of 4 annually is ideal. Many people have concerns about particular features of their faces or bodies. They’re unhappy and stressed because of the way they look. In helping them to improve their appearance through effective treatment, nutrition and lifestyle education, they become more relaxed and comfortable with themselves. Their inner happiness transcends . . . . and they’re glow is revealed. How wonderful to have this available . . . . all in a healthy formula!

Dear Erika: I am a 41-year old divorced man. I was married for ten years and have two fantastic sons aged five and eight. I see my boys on a regular basis and we have a wonderful relationship. This will be my third Christmas away from my ex-wife who has a twelve year old daughter from a previous marriage. My question is .... should I continue to send my ex-wife Christmas gifts every year? I will always send gifts to her daughter as I have known her since she was two and we still get along great. I feel funny purchasing gifts for everybody except my ex, so I have also been buying her presents the past two years. Is this something I should continue and for how long? Confused in Clearwater

ASK Erika

Dear Gator: Years ago it was long hair and bell bottom pants. Throughout the years kids have had a hard time getting their parent’s approval for their boyfriends and/or girlfriends. If this boy treats you good, is a honest individual and is up to the task of meeting your parents .... why not give it a try? If you are going to have a future with this individual, sooner or later he has to meet your parents, so why not during the festive holiday season? Have a question for Erika? Send them to our Publisher at PaulAllen@PACpublishing.com. When emailing put “Attn. Ask Erika” in the subject line or mail them to 850 Dunbar Ave., Oldsmar, FL 34677 c/o Ask Erika.

Dear Confused: It sounds like you have a pretty good relationship with your ex-wife. When there is a divorce and children are involved, there will always be problems to overcome and decisions to make. It is great that you care for your step daughter and she is a lucky girl to have you in her life. Since your ex-wife is the mother of your two children and she will be a part of your life for a minimum of the next 13 years, why not continue to purchase her a small gift or two. I’m not saying buy diamonds or expensive gifts, but why not continue what has been working? The small cost of a few gifts can’t come close to equalling the yearround harmony you now have! Dear Erika: I am a freshman at the University of Florida and I have a problem. I met a boy who is not “exactly” what my parents had in mind for me. He is a free spirit with multiple tattoos and piercings, but he treats me great and we get along fantastic. I want to bring him home with me for the holidays, but I am afraid of the consequences. What should I do? A scared Gator

I dECLARE! Bart Rademaker, Md. Board certified Plastic Surgeon Medical Director of Rejuva Center for Plastic Surgery and Med Spa The holiday season is not joyous and happy for everybody. To many people, the coming days of December are notorious with feelings of melancholy. As the brightness of the day dims and overcast skies linger, many thoughts become more somber. Dim with memories of happy days past or lost loved ones and as days cool down – so does hope for many people’s future. Why does this happen and what can we do about it? There are certain natural changes that have been occurring on earth for millennia and our physiologies have adapted to them. They are almost necessary if not inevitable – perhaps simply to allow us to appreciate and compare these times with the happier spring and summer months. Whatever it may be, just a little melancholy is a good thing and puts our lives in perspective. It also gives us the incentive to make certain changes for the better – it is no coincidence that this is when we make our New Year’s resolutions!! We seem to realize more about the darker side of our existence and find the way to brighten it up. This helps us find balance, harmony, hope, endeavor and finally prosperity. It is very similar to the cycle of crops and the harvest at the end of a season. Truth is – this melancholy can be too intense and this is unnatural. Usually there are deep seated roots to this. Harmony is found through digging into our selves and cutting the roots – releasing whatever is holding us down. Drugs – either medicinal or recreational will do a number on us and finding ways to avoid their use is the primary solution to this problem. Nutritional – sugar is a culprit in today’s depressive states – eliminating this and particularly carbonated drinks will significantly sweeten our lives. Junk food, MSM, hydrogenated fats and so many other products will negatively affect our lives. Be educated – because you are what you eat! Dehydration, fatigue, and the inability to properly manage simple stress in life – let alone the hard ones contributes to personal despair and the

feelings if inadequacy. A good night sleep is often a cure and drinking the proper amount of fluids gives us energy. Stress at any time, especially nowadays, gets in the way of seeing things for what they really are. It changes our perspectives and our current feelings. Finding better ways to manage or even eliminate stress is key to happiness. Choosing a better point of view on the situation, being flexible and finding other options often results in the resolution of the reason for having the stress in the first place. No direction in life. If you do not establish personal goals, make a commitment to go after them and finally schedule them to get results, is usually accompanied by depression, loss of meaning and hopelessness. Toxins are everywhere even when we diligently avoid them. Detoxifying the body through exercise and even better through a body cleansing will dramatically influence how you feel. Regular exercise is mandatory to optimal wellness. And finally, your personal declaration - declare your outcome for yourself. Decide and act and you will find an answer. It would have been easy to describe any of the wonderful holistic or alternative therapies like Reiki, vibrational sound, shiatsu or herbal medicines to give you a single solution to all this melancholy but they may not work for you. Truth is – YOU are the answer by declaring what YOU want and take the appropriate steps to achieve them. Nu You Magazine is committed to making this possible. This harmony has been my personal mission as a surgeon and healer and that is why I contribute to the success of this magazine. Embrace the many stories, solutions and resources this publication has to offer. Make the personal changes and commitments as well as new habits or wellness therapies to make your life better and harmonious.

“...There are certain natural changes that have been occurring on earth for millennia and our physiologies have adapted to them...”

Make your declaration.

I declare harmony!

Horoscopes SAGITTARIUS nov. 22-dec. 21 How do you manage to eat a steady, healthy diet, even when you are on the go? This is a question you might need to ask yourself this month. You want to keep your energy levels at their current happy and healthy state. You won’t be able to do that if you aren’t eating great. So, spend some time planning (it is usually the key to staying healthy and not getting stuck dining on French fries because you don’t know where to go for after-hours dinner). CAPRICORn dec. 22-Jan. 19 You have a huge capacity for thinking things through. When it comes to reflection, you’re the star of the show. How does that apply to your fitness? After all, the body and soul are inextricably linked. So the more deeply you think, the more deeply you’ll understand how important it is for you to take wonderful care of your physical self. That includes not letting mental things (like stress) get to you. AQUARIUS Jan. 20-Feb. 18 Things are going pretty great. Don’t imagine that that means this is the moment to stop working out (that’s precisely not what it means). You have lots of energy, lots of free time and a whole host of terrific workout plans. Life doesn’t get much better than this! If you get to the gym early, why not take a shot at that climbing wall? Heck, you might find you really like it! Problems are easier to resolve when you’re well-worked out and well rested. PISCES - Feb.19-Mar. 20 Being happy in your relationships and your work life is, actually, crucial to your continued good health. Particularly for someone as sensitive as you are, unhappiness can really manifest as a physical problem. So be really honest with yourself about how you are feeling. It’s the first and biggest step you can take to better health. Daydream… but do it while you’re jogging or swimming. There’s no reason you can’t sweat and daydream.

ARIES - Mar. 21 – Apr. 19 This is absolutely and totally a month for tons of activity for you. Starting the 1st and continuing all month long, get into high gear. Work on those calves (thighs, stomach, back, etc.). On the 6th and 7th, if you’ve been feeling like it’s time to really adjust your diet, you’re probably right. So cut out processed foods and add healthy organic substitutes. Your body needs good healthy food for all those long bike rides!

LEO - July 23-Aug. 22 One way to keep yourself honest about your workout might be to commit yourself. How? What about a year long membership at the gym? Start small -- but get started. Twenty minutes at the gym is a hundred times better than no minutes at the gym. Make some goals on the 5th. Do you want to hike? Or swim? Dive? Snorkel? What are your dreams when it comes to testing yourself physically? This is the month to put the gears in motion.

TAURUS Apr. 20-May 20 Focus on your ligaments, your tendons and the muscles that hold each of your arms and legs to your torso. If you want, you can choose something else to focus on, but the key thing is that you do focus. Don’t just say, ‘oh, heck, I’ll get out of that downward dog posture any which way.’ Instead, say, ‘I’m going to pay attention to just how my body moves, what that means, and how I can adjust to better make everything work.

vIRGO - Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Bend down and touch your toes first thing in the morning. If you can’t quite reach those toesies, then ankles, shins, knees or calves. Breathe deeply, sending the air into all the places that feel tight. Loosen your lower back, relax your hamstrings and so forth. But don’t bounce! Come out of this simple stretch, slowly. Then do it again before lunch and again before you go to bed, you’ll be astounded at what a difference a little stretching makes!

GEMInI - May 21-June 21 Your workout is a blast! Tell yourself that, over and over, if an attack of the lazies are hitting you with the vengeance of Montezuma’s revenge make it your mantra: ‘My workout is a blast! My workout is a blast! My workout is a blast!’ If that doesn’t help, just force yourself to get to the gym. You’ll feel so much better afterward. Dreaming of hiking trips? Well, now’s the time to get your legs and lungs and lower back into shape! Don’t forget to stretch. CAnCER June 22-July 22 This month a really excellent workout leaves you feeling better than you’ve felt in a long time. And you, clever person that you are, immediately draw the correct conclusion: Working out regularly is going to improve your life in ways you can only partially imagine, as of right now. Do resolve to spend a little less time thinking about working out and a little more time actually doing it. Work on finding a healthy balance, between what you eat and how you sleep.

LIBRA - Sept. 23-Oct. 23 Try breathing, this month. Ok, ok, so you are always breathing. But if you breathed differently, you would feel calmer and more connected to your body. So give it a shot. Try repeating these long, deep, slow breaths every morning this month, and see how you feel by the end of the month. Chances are, you’ll see real changes in how you feel, physically and emotionally. Next, check in with your sleep. Are you getting enough rest? SCORPIO - Oct. 24-nov. 21 Meditate. Even if you don’t really feel like it. Even if you would rather watch television. A little discipline will go a long way, so if you committed to doing it this month, do it. Then get to your strenuous physical workout, you could be feeling pretty darned wiped out. ‘Tis the season for seasonal affective disorder, after all. Don’t let this exhaustion conflict with your workout routine.
