Publisher Staff
Letter From The
PUBLISHER - Paul Allen
ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER - Gregory Snow Welcome to the year 2010 ... wow, it doesn’t even sound right .... twenty-ten! The past few years have went by so fast it’s kind of scary. I guess as we get older, time goes by faster and faster and 2009 was a blur! There were many things that happened in 2009 that effected my personal life and one of those things was the birth of this magazine. NuYou has been a wonderful addition to PAC Publishing and I have enjoyed producing the magazine. I have met some very interesting people and I have actually started taking better care of myself because of the magazine. I think NuYou has a great future and I expect 2010 to be a great year! It is very difficult for printed magazines to make it in today’s economy. Businesses are cutting their advertising budgets and printing costs are expensive. I do think that print advertising is still very effective and I will continue to produce magazines however, I will combine them with a strong internet presence and that is certainly the case with NuYou. I invite you to check out www.NuYouMagazine. com and you will see what I mean. The world wide web is made for video and this site has video everywhere. You can also view the entire printed version of NuYou on line and comment on individual stories via our five category forum section. I am very proud of this site and I think it gives our advertisers a great way to increase their business and gives our readers a great way to get more involved. I wish all of you good luck with your New Year’s Resolutions and hopefully a few articles in this month’s edition will help you reach your goals. Have a wonderful January and thanks for reading NuYou Magazine!

Chiropractic during pregnancy is an important part of prenatal care. Unfortunately, not enough women know of the benefits of chiropractic care, both for themselves and their unborn baby. A woman’s body undergoes an amazing amount of changes during pregnancy. As her baby grows her musculoskeletal system must adjust accordingly to accommodate the growing uterus and prepare for delivery. Chiropractic care helps her body to stay aligned as these changes occur and also helps to keep the nervous system functioning at its optimal level. Many pregnant women experience low back pain, hip pain, and pubic symphysis pain. These discomforts are the result of the stress put on the body by the rapid growth of the baby and the changes the body must undergo to accommodate those adjustments. As her belly gets bigger, the woman’s center of gravity changes. The growth is so quick that it is often difficult for the low back and pelvis to adjust to these changes. This causes stress in those areas, resulting in misalignments (or subluxations as they are called by chiropractors), which then cause pain and dysfunction. If a woman’s low back and pelvis were out of alignment before her pregnancy it is more difficult for her back and pelvis to adjust. When the pelvis is subluxated (misaligned) it affects the uterus and the position of the growing baby. The uterus is connected to the pelvis by ligaments: the broad ligaments, the uterosacral ligaments, and the round

Chiropractic during pregnancy
ligaments. Like a hot air balloon tethered to the ground, these ligaments work to keep the uterus in the proper place in the pelvis and allow support as the uterus grows to accommodate the growing baby. If the pelvis is subluxated, these ligaments can become torqued. When the ligaments are affected, they directly affect the position of the uterus which can result in the baby not being in an optimal position. This type of situation may result in a breech baby or a transverse (sideways) baby. The goal of the chiropractor is to correct the subluxations in the pelvis to help balance the uterus and allow the baby to get into a better position. Chiropractic adjustments for a pregnant woman are specific, gentle, and safe. Besides increasing a pregnant woman’s comfort level, an aligned pelvis can result in a quicker, safer, and easier birth for the mother and the new born. When a baby is in a breech or transverse position a cesarean section is almost always performed. Because they are so common, many people forget that a c-section is a major abdominal surgery and can be risky. Helping the baby to get into a proper head-down position by balancing the pelvis and ligaments helps to avoid c-sections due to baby positioning. Other variations in baby position, such as a tilted head or a “sunny side up” baby (face up during delivery), can also be caused by pelvic imbalance and may result in a more difficult, painful, and longer labor and delivery. If you and/or a family member are planning on having a baby make sure that you include chiropractic as part of your prenatal care to ensure optimal health and well being to you and your baby.

Board certified Plastic Surgeon Medical Director of Rejuva Center for Plastic Surgery and Med Spa As a board certified plastic surgeon, we have access to the latest and the best modalities to make you look young. The truth is, with all the new advances in technology, it is amazing how some of the simple stuff really goes a long way to look young again.

heaLthy TiPS!
The University of Pittsburgh did a study that said adults who get less than seven hours of sleep each night are three times more likely to get sick if they are exposed to a cold virus. The reason stems from the fact that the body’s immune system grows stronger when you are sleeping. Do you know that South Koreans boast a cancer rate that’s nearly 50% lower than America’s rate? One of the major reasons for this amazing fact is that kimchi (pickled cabbage) is served with almost every meal. Kimchi is full of unique compounds that render most carcinogens harmless. If you eat cooked cabbage you are not getting the full effect as the heat destroys many of the helpful traits. If you can’t find Kimchi, three servings a week of sauerkraut can also help fight the disease. Vitamin B12 can help people that have memory loss problems. B12 is vital for keeping electrical impulses moving throughout your body. If you are low in B12 your brain will not efficiently receive and process the signals sent to it. Studies also show that B12 will steady your mood as it nourishes the pineal gland and the entire nervous system. If you are taking more than one type of medication, make sure your doctor knows exactly what you are putting into your body. Certain drugs don’t mix and you should have a professional look at your pills. Regular aspirin and the prescription drug Coumadin when used separately can safely help prevent blood clots by thinning your blood, but when combined they raise the risk of serious bleeding. If you take the heart drug Digoxin, you don’t want to take common over-the-counter antacids like Maalox and/or Tums. These are just two examples and they are not all prescription drugs, you also want to check any herbal remedies that you are taking. Be careful and talk to your doctor!
Here’s an interesting fact from the City of Hope National Medical Center. Their study said when dieters ate 3 ounces of almonds a day, their weight and body-mass index dropped 18% when compared to a group of people who ate the same number of calories without the almonds. Popeye the Sailor Man ate spinach to grow big muscles, but the leafy, green vegetable can also help prevent colon cancer as it is full of folate. A report in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition states that people who ate at least 300 mcg. of folate every day are 64% less likely to develop the disease. Did you know that “parsley” is a good source of vitamin C, iron and flavonoids, which the American Institute for Cancer Research says protect cells from cancer? A University of Georgia study suggests that “sage” can prevent tissue damage caused by high blood sugar and can protect against cardiovascular disease. “Rosemary” can protect brain cells from the aging process says a Burnham Institute for Medical research study and Rutgers University researchers say that “turmeric” helps prevent joint inflammation and slows the spread of prostate cancers.
People are living longer today than ever before! The typical 65-year old will live to the age of 83 .... onein-four 65-year olds will live to be at least 90 and one-in-ten 65-year olds will live to age 95.

SLEEPY TIME By Paul Allen Do you have a hard time sleeping at night? According to the National Sleep Foundation, almost 60% of all people wake up in the morning feeling tired due to restless sleep. There are numerous ways to help you sleep at night besides taking sleeping pills and hopefully one of these will help you! A) Relax your mind and body. If you go to bed stressed out and thinking about all the things you have to do the next day, you will have a difficult time shutting down and falling asleep. Try sitting in a chair listening to music, or sit in your bed in a dark room for five minutes before you try to sleep, this will let your body know it’s time to shut down. Turn off your cell phone so you don’t have to worry about calls. B) Don’t drink alcohol right before you go to bed. Yes, it’s true that drinking too much alcohol will eventually make you pass out and sleep, but we are not talking about getting flat-out drunk in order to sleep. Avoid alcoholic beverages within three hours of going to bed. This will give your body time to digest the booze and get it out of your system. As your liver breaks down alcohol, it produces “coffee-like” stimulants that can increase your heart rate. By not drinking within three hours of bedtime, your body will have time to do its job.
C) Make sure your bedroom is “sleep-friendly”. Your room should be dark, quiet, cool and well ventilated. We all have an “internal body clock”, so it’s important to have darkness when you go to sleep and brightness when you awake. This will help your body adjust to sleep time. You also want a comfortable, soft bed with the right pillow. d) Many restless sleepers are lacking in calcium and magnesium. These particular minerals soothe the nervous system, reduce anxiety and relax muscles. Try taking a supplement that includes these two minerals to help you sleep better. Calcium is found in milk and that’s why a glass of milk helps many people. Another additive that helps is melatonin. Research says that taking 1mg. to 3mg. three times a week will help people sleep better and wake up more refreshed. E) Caffeine will keep you awake so that means you should go easy on the soda, coffee and tea after 6:00pm at night. Another stimulant is nicotine, so you might not want that “before bed” smoke! Hopefully you can use this information if you have trouble sleeping at night. There are numerous over-the-counter and prescription drugs that will also help, but if you can sleep better without artificial help, why not give it a try?

A great WAY TO reLaX Have you ever had a massage? Now, I don’t mean your boyfriend or girlfriend trying to massage your back ... I mean a true, professional massage? I had never experienced one until last month and I have to say it was wonderful! I visited Chris who is the owner of Therapeutic Elements Center, 31956 U.S. Highway 19 North in Palm Harbor, behind the Outback Steakhouse. When I first walked in, I was greeted by Chris who made me feel comfortable and he gave me a quick tour of the facility. I filled out my paperwork and got ready for my massage. Chris is not your normal masseuse, he has been a certified teacher and knows every muscle in your body. “There are numerous
benefits of massage and bodywork. Regular massages raise the level of your health, just like diet and exercise. There are numerous long term benefits to your overall wellness”, he said. Not only did my massage make me feel wonderful, but Chris educated me and explained everything he was doing. There was a reason for every knead ... every tug ... every push ... and every pull. I highly recommend everybody getting a massage and I highly recommend Therapeutic Elements Center. Contact Chris at www. BookAMassageNow.com. by Paul Allen

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR!
by debi Cianci
It’s a little sad that the holidays are over. I missed getting all dressed up and applying my “party” make-up. But what I really miss the most was doing all kinds of great styles to my hair!!!!!!!!!! So, I thought, why stop creating my great new looks? As long as the humidly stays away I can have different, exciting and new hair anytime I want! First, I really like the the new “BOB-edge-separateduneven-half short in back to real long in front” hair styles. I don’t like to name hair styles because the same style can have multiple names. This look is perfect for everyone … from very short and textured layers to very long, pass the shoulders hair. This style is one of many that help you get that swing and playfulness in your hair. Styling isn’t just short, long or straight …. hair has to move and come alive! That is when you know you have a good stylist! Hair should always be shinny (even if you need color). Hair should always move when you move and hair should always shape your face style long or short. Your hair is like a hat that makes you look good. Using angles, textures and type of bangs, a good stylist can match your face to that perfect style. If your hair feels right, you act and feel right! Be proud, be sexy and be sure of yourself. Why?? Because when you talk to anyone they will always look at your hair. That goes for men as well as women. Talking about men, I think it’s great they are finally waxing their eye brows and cleaning up their mustaches and beards. I like it when men angle
their (small) side burns and I think men should start looking at their faces for unwanted hair. By this I mean those unsightly nose and ear hairs. Panasonic makes a great powered razor to take off that nasty, unwanted stuff. It will also trim between your eyes instead of waxing. Here’s the deal …. remove your unwanted hair and we ladies will do the same …. deal? Also, men can take their razor and trim up their chest hair. They can also trim off unwanted back hairs, but they might need a helping hand reaching those hard-to-get-to spots! Here’s a tip to men who go for the “no hair at all look”, try using a hot wet towel on top of your head before you shave it. This helps hair “stand at attention” so you can get right down to the skin …. and don’t forget to moisturize. We all have our special looks. Don’t be afraid to change it up a little. Example: Men grow your beard a little different – shave some off or make it really thin. Women, if you always wear bangs, try no bangs one day or a more messy or smoother look the next day …. remember New Year - New Look! Try something new, you can always go back to your same old style. If you are thinking about trying out a new style, I am always here to help you create a new look. I offer “Free Consults” and if you mention NuYou Magazine, I will give all new clients a 20% discount during January and February. To all my new and old clients, let’s have a great 2010 and let us all get back on track!!!!!!!!!!!

MEET DanieL S. Stein, M.D.
Daniel S. Stein, M.D. is a very interesting man. He was born in New Rochelle, New York and proceeded to earn his B.A. with honors from Oakland University in Michigan. He stayed in the Wolverine State and graduated from medical school at Wayne State University, again with honors. From there, he ventured south and did his residency at the University of Alabama Medical Center where he later became the chief resident and instructor in the OB/GYN department. A few years later, he moved to the University of Florida and became a Clinical Associate Professor and Senior Consultant in Laser Surgery. Dr. Stein is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Laser Surgery. He has had numerous articles published and has authored several books. With his experience in the OB/GYN field, he founded the Stein Women’s Center in 1980 in St.Petersburg. It was the nation’s first integrated Women’s Center. In 1982, Dr. Stein founded the Laser Surgery Institute and turned his attention to the use of lasers in reproduction medicine. He founded the Florida Fertility Institute in 1983 and his laser treatments and research have been widely published in national medical journals. Among Dr. Stein’s many accommodations, he won the Distinguished Physician Award from the AMA in 2007 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Business Journal of Tampa Bay. In recent years, Dr. Stein has focused on Hi-Definition LipoSculpting and anti-aging treatments. He was the first physician in the greater Tampa Bay area trained to perform VASER LipoSelection and prefers it to liposuction.
“The problem with liposuction is that it is a very crude, almost barbaric technique. You go in and literally rip fat cells out by the root, indiscriminately destroying nerve cells, blood vessels and the structures that support and nourish the skin. While it does get rid of fat, traditional liposuction also may result in permanent ripples, contour deformity, surface irregularity and droopy areas of loose skin. That destruction doesn’t happen with sound energy targeting and selectively rupturing only fat cells, then liquefying their contents. The LipoSelection technique lets the skin shrink and tighten uniformly over treated areas”, he said. Dr. Stein added, “I care about my patients and I always say, “Look Great, Live Long & Love Well”. People need to take responsibility of their bodies when it comes to gaining weight, eating right and keeping in shape. All of these are harder to do as we get older and if you do them you will help your body fight diabetes, cardiovascular problems and other diseases. We have many treatments that can help you look and feel better, but people need to do their best to keep their bodies in tip top shape.” The Stein Medical Institute is located at 2713 W. Virginia Avenue in Tampa. It is a beautiful facility that gives you a relaxed and confident feeling the minute you walk through the door. If you would like to learn more about the services that are offered by Dr. Stein, please call 813-8739700 or check out www.steinmed.com for more information. By Paul Allen

PERMAnEnT COSMETICS PUT A LITTLE COLOR IN YOUR LIFE In our busy society, Permanent Cosmetics isn’t just another thing to help make our lives easier. It can be a necessity for someone who can not see as well as they once did or at all. Permanent Cosmetics is great for those who have lost eyebrow hair due to years of shaving, plucking or waxing. Let’s face it, as we get older we tend to grow hair where we don’t want it and lose hair where we need it the most. Permanent Cosmetics is also great for the active person that doesn’t want her makeup running down her face when she completes her first 50k marathon. Everyone wants to look their best, but with our hectic schedules time is precious. Permanent Cosmetics is not just for the face. It is used for areola pigmentation, (color around and on the nipple) which completes a breast reconstruction due to breast cancer. I have been in the beauty business for over 25 years covering all aspects of beauty. I am a Paramedical Esthetician with a Specialty in Permanent Cosmetics and Areola Repigmentation application, which I have taught for the past 3 1/2 years. It has been by far the most rewarding career that I have had the pleasure of being a part of. It gives me great joy at the end of a consultation to know someone feels comfortable enough to allow me to perform a very personal and scary procedure. Whether I am teaching a class or in the clinic I am asked the same questions:
1 2 3 4 5
1. Will it hurt? My first response it to say, “Oh my God yes!” Because that’s what they are expecting. This way when I tell them the truth it doesn’t sound so bad. A good technician uses the best anesthetic cream available in our profession. After about 20 minutes she can begin the procedure. At that time you should only feel the vibration of the machine or the pressure of the technician if it is done by hand. An anesthetic made for broken skin can be applied to make the patient comfortable.
have. No one should hesitate to show off their work. f. Can I have an allergic reaction to the procedure? Yes. Anything is possible. Since I have lived in Florida I have become allergic to 72 different things. Most of which I have never had an allergic reaction to before. What I have found, is patients who are allergic to the anesthetic. If you are allergic to benzicain, licocain or any other medications ending with cain, you may be allergic to the anesthetics used in Permanent Cosmetics. Which means you had a bad reaction to the numbing medication your dentist used. The most painful procedure is the lips, for the same reason a kiss can give you goose bumps, there are a lot of sensitive nerves in the lip area so if you stick a needle in them, you will get the opposite affect that a tender kiss may give you. The good news is at Affinity Body Solutions, Dr. Austin, a trained professional will numb the lips in the same manner as a dentist numbs your mouth before a root canal. I hope I have answered some of your Permanent Cosmetics questions. If you have more or would like to put a little color back in your life call Tammy Wedel at Affinity Body Solutions 6822 W. 2. Is this a tattoo? Yes. It is done with needles and pigments either by hand or machine which is designed just for Permanent Cosmetics. One of my 80 year old patients called her Grandson from the chair to tell him, “Grandma got a tat.” He asked to speak to the woman in charge. I eased his mind and assured him Grandma hadn’t lost hers. 3. Will I swell or bleed much? If the procedure is done correctly you should have no bleeding and very little swelling. Also there are precautions a patient can take to prevent this. No alcohol the night before. No caffeine, aspirin or blood thinner before the procedure. 4. do the eyebrows need to look like they are painted on? Absolutely not. This is a personal preference. Your eyebrow can be done with a hair stroke method and can look very natural. 5. When looking for a Technician what questions should I ask? a. Have you been trained by a licensed instructor? b. Do you have Dr. Supervision? Certificate? c. What are your sterilization procedures? I have met people recently who have watched YouTube and doing Permanent Cosmetics. d. DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT TROY AnTHOnY
By Jay Burnett, Fashion Editor
As a model in high school, Troy Anthony began noticing how his outfits were pinned on and fitted. This sparked something in him, and a passion for the designing end of the fashion industry began to burn. He brainstormed on how he could improve garment fit and style, and started putting things together. Troy came to Tampa after high school, and with two other business partners began an urban, hip-hop line of clothing called Dynamyk Threadz; mainly designing t-shirts and very casual clothing. “Whatever it took to pay the bills,” Troy said. Something was missing in all of this, though. He knew he needed more knowledge of the fashion industry and better skills to make his dream come true. Troy enrolled in the International Academy of Design, which opened more doors than he ever imagined. This gave him the opportunity to travel abroad and study in Milan, Italy. There he learned how to mix fabric textures, as well as foreseeing how the fabric would drape and look once the garment was completed. Working with some of the industry icons, he learned the technical aspect of designing.
state and, eventually, internationally. Troy would like to be one of those designer brands that hang in every woman’s closet; with a design for all occasions to wear - whether she is going to work, a dinner party, or a black tie event! When shopping for fabric he gets his inspiration from its texture, the design that he is going for, current trends in the industry, and the event or venue that he is designing for. We will have the pleasure of seeing Troy on the runway again this year at Fashion Week Tampa Bay as well as Fashion Week Miami. I look forward to seeing what Troy has coming out for Spring Summer 2010.Visit his website at www.TroyAnthonyFashions.com for a viewing of designs or contact him to custom design your next couture outfit. Tampa, keep your eye on this designer - with his passion and dreams, we may very well see this one walking the Red Carpet in the near future!
Once back in Tampa he decided it was time to branch out on his own and Troy Anthony Fashions, a design house dealing in diverse couture garments for women, was born in 2009. Inspired by mentors such as Karl Lagerfeld and Balenciaga, Troy began implementing big dreams for the company. He plans to keep the design house and studio home based in Tampa, but would like to expand across the

nuYou Legal Eagle by: Jeffrey “Jack” Gordon ACAI LAWSUITS “For thousands of dieters, the quest for a miracle product has become a nightmare,” said Illinois Attorney General Madigan. “Far too often, consumers end up losing their money – not weight – in these deals.” Acai berry offers have become particularly notorious. Madigan filed consumer fraud lawsuits against three suppliers and a market company of acai berry products. She charged that the companies lure customers with free trial offers – through aggressive Internet marketing techniques – and then charge customers’ credit cards prematurely, do not always supply the product and make it nearly impossible to cancel.
While internet offers about Acai berries abound, Attorney Generals around the country are beginning efforts to put an end to Acai scams. During the first week of October, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum announced a law suit against Advanced Wellness Research for deceptive marketing practices connected to the Pure Acai Berry Pro and New Pure Acai Berry Burn. The Acai berry has gained international recognition as one of the highest antioxidant fruits in the world. Dr. Perricone named the Acai berry as the #1 Superfood on the Oprah Winfrey show. Stories and segments extolling the virtues of Acai have been featured on the Today Shows CBS Early Show, and in publications ranging from the Wall Street Journal to the New York Times.

• January 2010
Studies have demonstrated very high antioxidant levels in the Acai berry, which is also rich in anthocyanins, fiber, healthy omega fats, amino acids, protein, plant sterols, vitamins and minerals. While the health benefits of the Acai berry have not been challenged, the way some companies have been marketing Acai berry supplements has come under fire. The Florida Attorney General’s law suit alleges that the companies engaged in deceptive marketing practices. Advanced Wellness Research, Inc. allegedly offered free trials for its products, including Acai berry supplements and whitening toothpaste, but failed to provide reasonable notice that customers would be charged approximately $80 on a monthly basis for products they did not intend to purchase. Advanced Wellness Research, manufacturer of the Pure Acai Berry Pro has now been named in at least 4 different lawsuits. In Illinois, the state Attorney General—Lisa Madigan--brought her lawsuit against AWR in August. Madigan filed two separate lawsuits against three suppliers and their related entities. In the first lawsuit against an acai berry supplement supplier, Madigan sued Advanced Wellness Research, its successor, Netalab, and Nicholas Molina, the former president of Advanced Wellness and an agent of Netalab. Both companies are based in Florida and operate out of a fulfillment center in Wood Dale, Ill. “The acai berry supplement sales programs are among the most aggressive that we have seen using misleading sales tactics to scam consumers,” said one official. “Consumers should always be skeptical and educate themselves instead of blindly believing any endorsement claims. Also, consumers need to be very wary of weight loss and health claims that sound too good to be true.” The complaints against the suppliers allege that these companies
engage in a very similar scam to market and sell acai berry supplements. According to the complaints, the companies offer consumers a “free trial” to entice them to sign up by providing a credit card number for shipping and handling charges. The companies use the “free trial” period to hook the consumers into a continuity sales program, where consumers are often unaware that they have agreed to buy a monthly supply of acai berry supplements (or other health supplement products) for $29 to $89 per month unless they cancel their orders within 14 days. Many consumers do not even receive shipment of the trial supplements before they are billed for the first monthly installment shipment. As part of this scam, consumers then find it very difficult to cancel future orders. The companies often bill consumers’ credit cards for a few months supply before the consumers are able to cancel the orders or cancel their credit card payments. In addition to the lawsuits initiated by state officials, private individuals, and private companies are further taking action. Harpo Productions (producers of the Oprah Winfrey Show) have filed multiple lawsuits. These suits assert trademark infringement complaint today against 40 Internet marketers of dietary supplements, including acai berry. “We must hold these Internet scammers accountable for their role in a seedy marketing game that steers unsuspecting consumers to online schemes,” Madigan said. “We also need to send a clear message to other marketers and networks in the business of designing misleading, traffic enticing schemes.” Jeffrey “Jack” Gordon is an AVrated, Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer who concentrates in the fields of Personal Injury and Medical Malpractice. will have a crowd pleaser, or at least a family pleaser. Remember, pork isn’t the most lean of meats but is an excellent source of protien. Add a couple of green veggies to the side and this will become a super low sugar, low carb choice for that new diet we all have resolved to start (on Monday!). Enjoy!
note:
Little Red Poatoes have a slightly higher carb count but it also contains more fiber. Remember, Fiber helps in digestion of carbs and keeps them from turning to sugar. In other words, keeping fiber in your diet will aid in keeping the undigested carbs from landing on your hips!
2 Remove chops from bag, discarding marinade, and grill over a medium hot fire, turning once, until just done, about 8 to 11 minutes total cooking time.
QUICK TIP!
Marinate your meat the night before. Then you can go straight from the fridge to the grill.

Since 1984 Donatello has been synonymous with fine dining in Tampa and it remains a premier place to impress and be impressed! Just steps off busy Dale Mabry Highway, this landmark restaurant has provided delicious food in a setting of artistic ambiance for twenty-five years. Graceful stucco archways, soft lighting, flowers, paintings, gold-leaf ceiling tiles and showcases of photographs chronicle the history of this favorite of lifelong local customers, movers and shakers, celebrities, romantic couples, new visitors and tourists alike. Tuxedo-clad Italian-speaking waiters lend to the authenticity and tradition of this four-star restaurant. With Prosciutto di Parma con melone (Parma Prosciutto and melon) and insalata Caprese (tomato and mozzarella with basil and vinaigrette) for starters, we began our adventure in traditional northern Italian cuisine. The classic Roman soup of beans and pasta (pasta e fagioli) tasted fabulous with a Caesar salad that was made succulent with homemade dressing. Entrees of grouper, cream sauce and crabmeat and medallions of beef tenderloin with garlic, tomato and oregano
sauce, delivered fresh flavors and delicately blended sauces. What I enjoyed the most was the fact that the food was not overwhelmed or camouflaged with too much seasoning. Lightly sweet crème brulee and chocolate mousse cake with cappuccino, provided a satisfying “dolce” moment to end the meal. Owner and patriarch Guido Tiozzo hosted a party for eight hundred to celebrate Donatello’s silver anniversary. “It was great to see all these people-God bless them!” From his welcome at the door to the parting rose for every lady, Guido is “hands-on” throughout the dining room, inspecting, adjusting, tasting and chatting with all his guests. He is the consummate ambassador of Donatello’s elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. He says there’s no secret to longevity and popularity, “We do things the proper way, the old-fashioned way.” His son Gino will carry on the Donatello tradition, Guido says, for another twenty-five years. Donatello is located at 232 North Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa, one block north of Kennedy Boulevard. But with a little knowledge, a little of your time and some old fashioned creativity, you can make restaurant quality meals at home for a fraction of the price you pay when you dine out. I know this because I was a Chef for over 25 years and I now cook for my family on a daily basis. These meals are healthy, have little trans fats, are high in protein and fiber and by the way…delicious!! I have thousands of recipes that you could make for your family and friends. Let’s take a simple example: Chicken w/ Broccoli and Tomatoes (serves 4) 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken thighs 1 can chopped tomatoes 1 head of broccoli 2 cloves of garlic 1 lb. pasta, brown rice or barley --your choice 1 can chicken broth 1 sweet onion

This meal will cost between $2.00 and $2.25 per person. We would serve a slight variation of this in a restaurant and would charge $8.00-$10.00 per person. You could also serve this meal with pork, beef, scallops, shrimp or other types of fish. You could also use sugar snap peas, escarole, spinach or another vegetable of your liking. As you get more creative, the price will definitely change. There is an endless variety of wholesome economic meals for you and your family at every grocery store, you just have to utilize your money wisely. If you would like some help on how to combine ingredients to make a great meal from start to finish…email me at chefalfie@ tampabay.rr.com. Please include your phone number. I will walk you through your questions and hopefully set you on the correct course to great meals at an inexpensive price. Looking forward to Creating Cooking Chefin’ Resourcefully, Chef Alfie

Recently I watched the movie “What the Bleep…Down the Rabbit Hole” A pretty interesting film with a bigger picture focus on our world, as we know it. The thoughts and concepts presented in the movie were given as tools to expand our own way of thinking and understanding. In one part of the movie, they referenced Dr. Emoto’s work with water samples, showing how words are imprinted without even being heard. In very simple terms, Dr. Emoto would freeze a drop of water and then view it under a microscope. Just like snowflakes, the transformations of each drop of water into ice were unique each and every time. To expand on his exercise, he wrote on the outside of each tube that held the droplet of water, one simple word or small phrase was written. What was amazing was how water responded to the word or message written. Water does not seem to have a consciousness like we do as humans, and yet it responded to words. Beautiful words inspired the most amazing crystalline images and negative words showed apparently decaying images. A character in the film said, “If words can change water, imagine what they can do to our bodies.” This statement truly affected me and reminded me of the importance of what we say to others and ourselves. We live in a society that expresses perfection in all ways; we view it on television shows, the news and the Internet. In addition to the impressions given to us to be perfect, the Internet has created another resource for our Freedom of Speech through blogs and message boards. These portals were created for people to express their words, so often the words are directed towards strangers and carry both positive and negative vibrations with them. Words we express often mirror our own feelings and emotions. If someone is feeling insecure, there may be more of a tendency to give that feeling to others whether consciously or unconsciously. Words are powerful, motivating and sometimes debilitating. How often do you think things about yourself that are not in harmony with what you want to feel or want to see? When we entered this New Year, we come into a time of change, newness and freshness. This is the time of year that invokes positive thought and intent. As you are making changes, start by being aware of your words.
We have always heard the saying “Think before you speak” that is because once words are said; their energy has been released. The power of your words has been given and it can be hard to retract that power. Empowerment comes from the word Power…As we become aware of the power of words, we can use them to become more empowered ourselves. By using conscious thought, positive words, thoughts and messages can truly be life changing. There are simple ways to incorporate powerful changes by changing words. Words are intentions, visions and feelings. If we say to ourselves “I feel fat” we are using the energy of emotion, vision and expectation. The feeling we get after expressing those words mentally or verbally is often one of sadness or unworthiness. Changing your words changes your emotions. If you are having a tiresome day trying on clothes and feeling like nothing fits, which happens to many of us, before you use destructive words, close your eyes, take a deep breath and honor your body for being healthy, for taking you where you need to go. Look at yourself and see your perfect qualities. By recognizing something beautiful, your energy shifts, your mood lightens and you will notice things that may not have felt right before feel better now. The power of I AM is used by many in the New Age thought, although there is nothing New Age about it – it is simply a positive declaration to you. If you struggle with positive self-talk try using the “I AM” as a start to changing your words. You will be amazed at the difference in how empowered you will feel. Some I AM affirmations are: I AM Healthy I AM Loving I AM Beautiful I AM Creative I AM Empowered Express these positive affirmations aloud or write them down on note cards for your eyes to see and your body to receive. Think of the water, how without conscious awareness was able to transform itself by one simple word. Know the power of words; whether in thought, oral or written expression is immeasurable. Take control of your words and change your life and lives of those around you.

ASK dear Erika: I saw your column in last month’s NuYou and I have a question. I am twenty-two years old and I attend USF. My boyfriend is twenty-four and we have been dating for eight months. We like the same music, enjoy the same movies and we get along great 90% of the time. We have even talked about moving in together and possible marriage plans. However, he drinks way more than I do. I like an occasional alcoholic beverage when we are out with friends, but he doesn’t know when to stop. I have had to drive him home on more than one occasion and I feel very uncomfortable when he continues to drink after I have stopped. I know he gets wasted when he’s out with the guys and it seems lately he has a beer in his hands every time I see him. What should I do? debbie in Tampa
am very upset. The funny thing is I’m not mad about the “bitch” part but I’m furious about the “fat” part. I walked away at the time but I am still upset .... what should I do? Jessica in Clearwater Dear Jessica: It sounds like you work for a smaller company, but after six years, you should have the trust and friendship of your boss on your side. I would schedule an appointment with him, sit down and tell him what happened. If he values you as a person and co-worker, he will talk to Fred and make him apologize. If that doesn’t happen you are in a difficult position and might not have the job security you think you have.
Dear Debbie: You have a difficult decision to make. It seems that you and your boyfriend get along quite well and that’s a good thing, but his drinking problem is something that could easily get out of hand. There comes a time in a relationship where people have to make choices and your time could be rapidly approaching. Your boyfriend’s drinking will eventually tear your relationship apart. Heavy drinking has no upside and can only lead down a one-way road to nowhere. There’s nothing wrong with having a drink here and there or occasionally getting tipsy, but there’s a time and a place for everything. You need to have a long talk with him and let your feelings be known. If he loves you and wants to be with you, he will curtail his drinking. He will say he’ll stop, but seeing is believing. Give him a fair chance, but be prepared to move on if he goes back to his old ways. dear Erika: I am very self conscious about my weight. I have a great job that I have been at for the past six years. I work for a family owned business and my boss is also a personal friend. We work well together and our families often see each other on the holidays. He hired Fred, his cousin, last month and that is when my problems started. We don’t see things the same way and we just don’t get along. I’m ok with business disagreements because they are part of the job, but last week Fred called me a “fat bitch” and I

A sense of hope for the New Year
…. it’s like an aphrodisiac to your life. You are energized with new ideas and resolve to change your ways. As you celebrate surviving yet another year, will this be the year it will finally happen and you will be able to keep those resolutions you made? Deep inside however, your subconscious says to you – it ain’t going to happen! In celebration with your friends and drunk on life …. you can’t even imagine a life without making those resolutions.
If you want success, then here is a simple three step process you need to follow. If you follow this, you should be able to succeed: 1. Define a realistic goal on paper and know the reasons for that goal, 2. Figure out the steps and the resources you need to make them happen, 3. Schedule and monitor your success. Following these three steps will give you the chance

to accomplish the goals that are both realistic and beneficial to you. Failure happens when our goals are simply too far to reach or if they are not important enough. People are easily sidetracked by other things and do not follow through - especially if they do not remember why they had the goal in the first place.
“...Failure happens when our goals are simply too far to reach or if they are not important enough....”
Then why do so many fail? For a very simple reason (and the very nature of that New Year’s Resolution) it only happens once a year. At that time, you have forgotten all the resolutions you made in the past and as you make your new one, there is no follow up or reminder of your resolve and the reason for the resolution.

All the resources are available to you to make those changes – you just have to spend the time and be flexible enough to make them actually happen. Horoscopes CAPRICORn dec. 22-Jan. 19 The 1st is going to go better, all around, if you spend a little more time on you. Sure, you might feel like you need to go to work and rush around making up for lost time. But that’s not actually the healthiest of plans. And if you aren’t healthy, you aren’t going to be very effective at work, in the long term. So slow down. Breathe. Take your time. Run. Walk. Swim. Stretch.
TAURUS Apr. 20-May 20 Food could be foremost on your mind and that’s great -- as long as it’s which healthy delicious food you are going to cook up at home that you’re thinking about. Remember: What you put in your body is what is going to fuel your life. If you put in lousy stuff, you aren’t going to be functioning at a very high level. Stress…. watch out for it mid month. Don’t push yourself beyond your limits.
AQUARIUS Jan. 20-Feb. 18 Workout, workout, workout on the 1st. Don’t forget your workout. Don’t shorten your workout. Don’t put off your workout until later -- when decide you can’t go running anymore because it’s dark outside. Even if you don’t feel like it, it’s important to get out there and workout on this first day of the whole new year. Your emotional health is a key part of your overall health, you know. So address whatever it is, and now.
GEMInI - May 21-June 21 Make those plans to sweat your way into the New Year, quick style. You have got great energy ahead. That’s thanks in no small part to the terrific workout regimen that you’ve been practicing. Your workout companions have excellent ideas about what to focus on next. Use your body, but under no circumstances abuse it. Stretch even if you think it’s boring
PISCES - Feb.19-Mar. 20 To start this year out in the best possible way, you should get outside and get some exercise. You really need to connect with nature, and your own natural body, in order to understand the importance of the passage of time. So even if it’s cold out, make sure you spend some time breathing in the crisp air. Reflect on the year that has passed and ways in which you could make the year coming up a healthier, happier one. ARIES - Mar. 21 – Apr. 19 You have a ton of energy. Awesome! You know just what to do with it, don’t you? Yes, get out there and run, jog, play basketball or canoe. You’ll be starting things off right this month (and this year)! Need something? A workout partner, say? Charm them into joining the gym with you. Explore, explore, explore mid month. Cooking and eating well are priorities. After all, you are what you eat!
CAnCER June 22-July 22 Can you bring that attention to detail in your health regimen? Can you eat just the right stuff? Can you create the just right combination with an ideal workout routine? While getting enough sleep and cutting way back on no-no habits? Try it this year! Get started right away. And if you need the day to recover from last night’s party -- well, that’s a sign that you have a couple of big changes that need to be made. LEO - July 23-Aug. 22 Your year is off to a really strong start. Have you been running and swimming and lifting and getting to the gym and practicing those things where you pretend you’re a lion and you roar? Before you plunge into the New Year, make sure you take a moment to notice how good all this superhealthy stuff makes you feel. Then recommit, in a really serious way, to your fitness this year.
vIRGO Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Feeling achy? Breaky? Creaky? Squeaky? A little bit tired out and freaky? If you say yes when you wake up the morning of the 1st, it is high time for you to put on your workout clothes and get outside. Run, don’t walk, to the nearest place where you can get your body moving and enjoy a ton of fresh air coursing through your lungs. Yep, a strong start is the key to a great New Year! LIBRA - Sept. 23-Oct. 23 What use is a healthy, first-day-of-the-restof-your-life potluck if nobody picks a time and place? It looks like it’s up to you, as always, to organize everything for everybody. Good thing you enjoy doing just that so very much! Otherwise, you might stop doing it, and the health of all your many, many friends would suffer! Smooth is your keyword. SCORPIO - Oct. 24-nov. 21 Challenge? Did somebody say ‘challenge?’ Well, you sure do love a challenge, so if there’s one to be had, here’s a bet you’re going to jump all the way in. That’s exactly the kind of energy you need this year to stay fit and fantastic. But don’t go overboard with the whole competitive thing: Just getting out there and giving it your all is going to be enough to keep you in great shape. SAGITTARIUS nov. 22-dec. 21 Get out there and run! Everybody wins: You’re healthy, and the cuties are happy! Is a work or relationship problem driving you nuts? And do you think that’s healthy? Take a very deep breath. Now it’s clear, right? Of course that’s not healthy! So how are you going to make this situation calm way down? Figure it out, and then make it happen.
