e can all agree that golfers have a lot on their minds during a typical round of golf. Between the good shots, the bad shots, and maybe a few drinks, a medical emergency probably isn’t top of mind. I know it wasn’t for me. During a recent round of golf, one of my regular playing partners started displaying some unusual symptoms. Dizziness and an odd feeling in one leg led us to cut the round short and he went to the hospital. It turns out he had a minor stroke. There are no lasting repercussions, so he was lucky. Things like strokes and heart attacks are problematic on the golf course. In fact, a recent study showed that 95% of all heart attacks on the links prove fatal, simply because of response time and the difficulty in getting paramedics out onto the

course where the attack occurred. Did I mention that golf courses are the fifth most common locations for strokes and heart attacks to occur? So what should you look for? Dizziness or disorientation is a place to start. Heart attacks are typically accompanied by shortness of breath, nausea, and tightness that can spread from the chest to arms and shoulders. Strokes, on the other hand, can be tipped off by difficulty speaking, numbness in the face or extremities, and sudden confusion. Any combination of these symptoms should result in a call to 911 for medical assistance. Is this something you want to worry about while you’re out playing? Probably not. But it’s hard to collect on a golf bet when you’re buddy’s in the hospital!

Chewelah Golf With so many people crowding the big cities on the West Coast, some are looking for a smaller place to live. Chewelah, Washington is one of those idyllic places.

14.

Cool Cups With the summer golf season upon us, it’s important to stay hydrated out on the course and keep your favorite libation cool and refreshing for as long as possible.

You have to admit, trees are really quite lovely. On the golf course, trees have a specific purpose and give definition to the holes we play. Sometimes they can save a poor shot, other times they can wreak havoc on players.

Bandon Cottage For nearly 20 years, Bandon Dunes has been touted as one of America’s great golf meccas, a place you just had to play. Now there’s a great place to stay.

If you play golf in the Pacific Northwest, you spend a fair amount of time around and under the trees. This month’s lesson will give you a few hints and tips to help you escape their grasp.

08.

Common Mistakes Too much club and not enough loft: I see a lot of 4-irons, hybrids, and fairway woods from the trees. This is a problem because the first thing we need in the strike is a little lift. Under a tree, the ground will either be loose pine needles, dirt, or unkept grass. None are beneficial to a longer club with minimal loft. On loose ground the player will often times hit behind the ball in an effort to keep the flight low, leading to chunky shots that don’t go far or pop up into the branches. In long grass, the club face can close at impact.

The Great 48 San Diego, California is a nearly perfect vacation spot, especially if you have a limited amount of time. The city has great lodging options, and amazing golf options.

21.

facebook.com/ nwgolf

How to Escape From the Trees Setup: Take a normal stance and place the ball near the middle of your stance. Place slightly more weight into your lead foot. This will encourage a downward strike and in this body position the player is more likely to hit the ball first. Club Selection: Unless the tree has limbs that go all the way to the ground you will want to grab a club with some loft, like a six or seven iron. This will give the ball much needed lift at the strike, but the flight can still be controlled with proper pace. Swing: If your swing is fairly restricted the goal on this shot will be to simply put the ball back in play. In the backswing, take the club about hip high without setting the wrists. For the downswing we are looking to rotate our trunk through and finish with our hands and club pointing towards your target. Pace is a big key for this shot. The faster the motion, the more spin you will impart to the ball and the higher the flight will be.

Uneven golf swing: This happens a lot with a longer shafted club. The player will take a short and fast backswing and stab through the ball. The pace of the golf swing is typically too fast for the intended swing.

Keep in touch . twitter.com/ nwgolf

for extra strokes on the scorecard.

Unrealistic Expectations: This is where the “hero” shot comes into play. The player tries to do too much with the shot. This is a recipe

Miura Golf Launches New Milled Tour Wedge Legendary Japanese club maker uses PGA Tour inspiration for new wedge design

E

Utilizing its renowned forging process in Himeji, Japan, Miura, an 8AM Golf brand, produced a grain structure within the head that is the tightest in the industry. The new high bounce wedge does not pursue distance like other clubs, but rather the precision and control necessary for scoring.

arly in May, club manufacturer Miura Golf revealed the newest addition to its equipment lineup: the Milled Tour Wedge High Bounce (HB). Delivering the soft feel golfers covet, the new wedge is a striking example of Miura’s dedication to producing the finest equipment in the industry.

“We’re extremely excited to expand upon the success of our Tour Wedge product line with the introduction of Tour Wedge High Bounce (HB),” said Miura Executive Vice President, Jason Rutkowski. “The new design elements should appeal to more golfers, specifically those that have a steeper angle of attack on wedges.”

The new head shape confidently aligns the golfer, allowing for pinpoint accuracy. Using premium soft carbon steel, the Tour Wedge HB boasts a wider sole that tapers from toe to heel, allowing for a more effective bounce along the middle of the sole. The added C Grind (heel and toe relief) and camber (front to back relief) increases playability and forgiveness.

The head design of the Tour Wedge HB will match with any of Miura’s iron models. Lofts are available in 50° - 62° in 2-degree increments to configure the perfect set. Golfers can purchase the Milled Tour Wedge HB and all other Miura products at authorized club fitters around the globe or by visiting www.Miuragolf.com.

Miura’s new PGA Tour Ambassador Abraham Ancer added the new wedge to his bag to help tackle the vicious rough at Bethpage Black during the PGA Championship. That move helped him to a tie for 16th in the year’s second major.

Bandon dunes and the bandon cottage Ultimate Buddy Trips For nearly 20 years, Bandon Dunes has been touted as one of America’s great golf meccas, a place you just had to play. Since the first shot was struck on the original Bandon course, the resort has grown to include five championship courses, a par-three course, amazing practice facilities, several lodging options, and restaurants and bars to relax in. Sometimes, though, there just aren’t enough rooms to go around. That’s when you have to get creative. For a small to medium sized group, the Bandon Cottage has been a great place to stay. Located just minutes from the Bandon Dunes Resort (and just down the road from where the Sheep Ranch will open in 2020!), the Bandon Cottage features four bedrooms (each with two queen beds), a large living room, a gourmet-style kitchen, billiard room and a putting green, BBQ and fire pit in the backyard. It’s a great place to go home to after a long day of golf. The Bandon Cottage is owned and operated by four friends from NY who all stayed there in 2013 during their first trip together to the resort. When the property went up for sale in 2016, the foursome felt it was a no-brainer to buy and continue offering it to golf groups. Paul Catoggio managers the property on behalf of his partners and has made the long journey to Bandon more than a dozen times since the resort opened in 1999. “As an avid golfer myself, I enjoy working with groups to ensure they get the most out of their trips. That includes sharing my local knowledge of the town, restaurants, other nearby courses, caddies and even non-golf excursions. I also highly recommend our available in-house chef Nora who can have a gourmet meal waiting for you when you get back after 36 holes or simply stock the house with whatever you may need prior to your arrival.” Staying at the resort can be great, but friends being able to stay under one roof and relax after golf is the biggest amenity the Bandon Cottage has to offer. Booking tee times when staying away from the resort is easier than it used to be, just make sure you familiarize yourself with Bandon’s booking policies and speak with Paul so he can share his strategies to get the tee times you want.

incredibly scenic golf course, with views of the surrounding mountains and the encircling woodlands. We’re always in great shape and our greens are fast and smooth.”

CHEWELAH IS A PLACE TO PLAY

Located 45 minutes north of Spokane, Chewelah got its start as a nine-hole course in 1976. Since then, 18 more holes have been added to the club, making it the Inland Empire’s only 27-hole course.

Unlike some of the nearby resort courses, Chewelah is in the heart of a residential neighborhood, with homes completed on roughly half the sites. The open lots, while picturesque, are no place you'd want to hit a golf ball.

Golf Operations Manager Jason Pitt called Chewelah a great example of a classic

- have a surprising amount of undulation,” added Pitt. “It can be tough, but it’s a top five public golf course.” The course is divided into two courses: a championship-caliber 18-hole course and a regulation 9-hole course. Playing amidst such scenic beauty, it can be hard to pick a favorite hole, but Pitt said his choice is an easy one. “The ninth hole on our 18-hole course is amazing. From the tips, it’s a 486-yard par four that features a dramatic drop in elevation from tee to green. The view from the tee box is so stunning, it’s sometimes difficult to focus on the task at hand.” Chewelah features six sets of tees, making it possible for golfers of all abilities to find a yardage they’ll be comfortable with and enjoy. Players also have access to an ample practice facility used for warming and improving their games.

clubhouse: Chewelah’s clubhouse is a social hub

CHEWELAH IS A PLACE TO STAY Almost by default, Chewelah has become the heart of the surrounding community. In addition to the golf course, the club features a gorgeous clubhouse, restaurant and lounge, tennis courts, an RV park, and a 3,700-foot airstrip. “We’re really the social center of Chewelah,” said Pitt. We have a phenomenal outdoor venue with 1,000 square feet of patio that looks out over the ninth green and the pond. We have couples that will drive in and fly in just to have dinner and cocktails.” The atmosphere cultivated at Chewelah is a good one. Groups of golfers - representing both men’s and ladies clubs - gather on a regular basis. The club also hosts events for community groups, as well as its fair share of weddings. To Pitt, the right atmosphere is essential to a club like Chewelah. “It’s important to me that all the neighbors and members get along. My staff and I work hard to break down the cliques that can form at a golf club and make sure new members can meet people to play with.” Pitt added that the City of Chewelah recently completed its purchase of the club’s airstrip. Now dubbed Chewelah International Airport, the airstrip is the only place in Stevens County big enough for jets to take off and land. Despite the change in ownership, golf carts are still on

hand for flyers to take between their plane and the clubhouse. Despite an amazing golf facility, it’s still the surrounding real estate that drives things. The club’s RV park - with 27 full hook ups and 10 dry camping sites - has been a unique entry point for new homeowners. “The RV park is a real advantage for us,” said Pitt. “People can come stay and play and try out the community before buying a home or homesite. They fall in love with Chewelah and then they stay.” Real estate around the course is divided into two areas: sites along the golf course, and the newer Chewelah Crest sites overlooking the golf course. The reasonably-priced lots are ready to be developed with water, power, gas, and phone services at the property lines. And, most homes and lots come with a membership to the club. “Our area is rural, but still close to a bigger city that you’re not isolated,” said lifelong resident Steve Schalock. “People come here from all over because Chewelah is a friendly, safe place. It’s got a nice feel.” The town of Chewelah offers more than just golf, it offers a lifestyle for residents. The small-town feel of country living is reinforced by the acres of nature featuring four distinct seasons every year. During the winter, top-notch skiing is available at 49 North Mountain Resort with

groomed runs, powder runs, and acres of tree skiing. Water sports are available at nearby Lake Roosevelt, and smaller lakes scattered throughout the region provide anglers with trout and bass fishing. Schalock added that the town wants to attract residents who want to golf and have access to outdoor activities, people he said are “looking for a way of life.” Unlike typical resort towns, Chewelah is a place for families to thrive. The schools have been recognized for excellence in both academics and athletics. The town also has the modern medical facilities and assisted living options to make sure residents receive the same treatments available in a bigger city. “We have residents who are retired, people who are still working remotely, and just had a pair of Washington State University professors choose to move to Chewelah,” added Schalock. “The variety says a lot about what our town has to offer. Ask anyone associated with Chewelah Golf and Country Club Estates, or the town of Chewelah, and you’ll find total commitment to a way of life that’s been handed from generation to generation. It’s a place that families grow up in and then continue to live in. For information about real estate in the Chewelah area, please contact Evan Schalock 509 954-3887 or Dave Pohto 509 936-1382.

Game Improvement

Sports Psychology is the KEY to unlocking your athletic potential

Improve your approach to golf by improving your thought process Watching a professional golf event on television or thumbing through a golf magazine leads many fans to believe that the golf industry is made up solely of clubs and apparel from major manufacturers. That couldn't be farther from the truth, with more and more professionals, instructors, and amateurs learning about game improvement through fitness and psychology. Sports Psychology was an ongoing theme throughout the movie Tin Cup, which features hapless driving range pro Roy McAvoy fighting to tame his inner demons and win the U.S. Open. His love interest/therapist jokes several times that she could make a living working with professional golfers and their caddies. Now, some people really are. At this year's PGA Merchandise Show, Dr. Richard Trammel conducted several sessions to show club professionals the types of mental training that he specializes in. After starting with exercises to show how the brain operates during a typical round of golf, he discussed strategies to improve the process. ""How much of your sport would you say is mental in nature? Some say up to 90 percent at the elite level. If that is the case, how much are you working on your mental game? Sports Psychology is the KEY to helping any athlete unleash their potential with sound theoretical approaches." Dr. Trammel's company - Level 3 Sports Psychology - offers information and training for players of all abilities. And, in keeping with the technology available to all of us, his program is available in a variety of ways: In-person consultations and workshops, applied golf workshops, video lessons, and a library of pre-recorded sessions. "What makes Level 3 Sports a unique sports psychology consultancy is my experiences in athletics, business, and academics. I currently play competitive golf and have taught the game for about 30 years," added Trammel Golf is Dr. Trammel's passion, but he's recruited like-minded teachers with the drive and knowledge to help players in several other team and individual sports.

New training aide can Light Up Your Putter Marine veteran entrepreneur’s quick to set up, easy-to-use golf alignment tool features cutting-edge laser technology to help golfers improve their aim and swing.

L

aser beam technology may provide the solution for swing alignment problems that have troubled many a golfer with a new company, SQRDUP, offering an innovative, award-winning golf swing alignment tool to provide golfers with accurate positioning.

The company’s ultra-bright laser beam alignment aid kit, which is available for purchase at its website for $199, is quick to set up and easy-to-use to help golfers visualize precise golf swing alignment. SQRDUP can also provide golfers with invaluable adjustment feedback for their feet, hands, club, and target, and additionally be employed as a helpful guide for creating repetitive putting strokes. “I have been impressed with the great response to our product by golfers of all types from savvy pros to beginners,” said Randy Bowman, cofounder and CEO. “Users keep coming up with innovative ways to use our product. The latest is golfers using SQRDUP for wedge practice at dusk. It is a very rewarding feeling. My brother and I spent three years in the garage learning everything we could about lasers, LEDs, and holograms. Once we figured out our vision was possible, SQRDUP was created and is now helping golfers around the world.” SQRDUP benefits and features include: •

Lightweight and easily accessible -- Designed to be a 6-inch crosshair square that is only 1 ½ inch thick and weighs 8 ounces, SQRDUP can be easily stored in a carry bag.

Highly accurate alignment -- Visibility of a green laser beam provides a fixed putting line to help golfers visualize their alignment.

Advanced design construction -- ABS plastic is ultra-durable to stand up to years of heavy use that includes 545 NM wavelength laser technology.

Works in any setting -- Lasers are visible in full daylight and can work on any type of terrain from fairways to deep in the rough.

Quick to set up and easy-to-use -- Can be easily moved with your foot or golf club to get the perfect alignment in seconds.

Built-in rechargeable battery -- Allows for four hours of precise alignments on a single charge.

Bowman is a former 20-year Marine veteran, who retired from the oil and gas industry a couple of years ago to pursue his entrepreneurial dream. While many retirees spend their retirement playing golf, Bowman is instead seeking to transform the sport through technology. SQRDUP partnered recently with Cameron Percy, a PGA Tour player, and Grant Price, a PGA teaching pro.

PLACES TO PLAY

Coronado

Coronado, CA

Few things in life compare to a round of golf on a warm, oceanside course. That’s the experience the City of Coronado - just outside of San Diego - has been offering golfers on a regular basis since 1957. The course is a quick drive over the 2.1-mile long Coronado Bay Bridge, a fixture that serves as the backdrop to several holes during your round. It has the laid-back feel of Southern California, but brims with civic pride as the residents of Coronado bike and run along the trails surrounding the course. Coronado’s pro shop is well-stocked with everything you might have forgotten to pack for your trip. The driving range is perfect for a day of practice or a quick warm-up before a round. Once on the course, golfers are treated to near perfect conditions. The wide fairways are lush, and smallish greens are smooth and fast. Early on, players get a taste of what awaits them at the end of their round. A few shots along the water give way to a string of holes that double back to the surrounding neighborhoods enroute to a bayside finish.

Brian Smock, Coronado’s head professional, said his favorite hole has always been the par-four 16th. Measuring between 313- and 370-yards. The first of three waterside finishing holes, the 16th treats players to views of the hotel, yacht club, and the bay. Those brave enough to cut the water-protected dogleg will have a short shot into the green and a great chance at a birdie. Coronado, for both residents and guests, has always been considered a great value. Smock said that’s what players comment the most about after a round. That sentiment, he added, has been backed up with top ratings from Golf Digest for being one of the best golf values in the country. If you’re visiting San Diego, there’s no good excuse for skipping a round at Coronado.

Liberty Lake Liberty Lake Golf Course is an 18-hole newly remodeled championship public golf course located in beautiful Liberty Lake, Washington (18 miles east of Downtown Spokane). Redesigned in 2008 by Rick Phelps and opened in 2010, the $6 million renovated facility boasts a 6607-yard par-70 layout and is a fun challenge for all skill levels. Players will enjoy white sand bunkers, large greens, and water as they experience a marvelous new golfing creation. Liberty Lake features a variety of tests that range from long par fours to scoreable par fives. Water and bunkers come into play on nearly every hole. An excellent example of everything Liberty Lake has to offer are the sixth and seventh holes.

22

Spokane, WA The sixth, a slight dogleg left par four begs for a drive down the right side of the fairway. The second shot is difficult because of a deep greenside bunker that’s fortified by water for shots pushed way right. Get through that hole and you’ll face a medium length par three with water all down the right side. Tee shots must find the correct spot on the three-tiered green. Liberty Lake utilizes a grass tee driving range with targets and yardage indicators. Separate chipping and putting areas allow players to hone their short game skills. After playing your round, enjoy great food and your favorite beverages in their wonderfully remodeled clubhouse facility. This is truly a hidden Northwest gem.

Stone Creek

Oregon City, OR

In addition to being a daily-play gem, Stone Creek Golf Course is tough enough to host regular qualifiers for the Oregon Amateur Championship. When Stone Creek Golf Course opened in Oregon City, many considered the project a gamble for Clackamas County. The Peter Jacobsen/Jim Hardy course, built at a cost of roughly $7.5 million, has paid off both financially and critically. Set on 120-acres, the course takes advantage of the natural splendor around it, offering spectacular views of Mount Hood. Stone Creek has been lauded for its use of natural wetlands and incorporation of corridors that allow the abundant wildlife to move across without disruption.

For golfers, Stone Creek is a tale of two nines. The first half meanders through a gently-rolling meadow, while the second half moves up and down through Douglas fir trees and around wetlands. Many consider the front nine the easier of the two, a warm-up for a series of difficult holes coming down the stretch. In addition to an interesting layout,

Stone Creek is best known for its excellent drainage, achieved through a conscious decision to ensure the driest course conditions for year-round play. Even during the cold, wet months of January and February, golfers are greeted by the sight of their tee shots bouncing and rolling down the fairways. In the past, Stone Creek has been lauded for its environmental sensitivity. In addition to the wildlife corridors, the course has developed an integrated pest management program, limited pesticide use, refined irrigation practices, created pond buffer zones, and conducts voluntary water testing. Stone Creek has become something of a destination for the local community. Next to a full-service pro shop and restaurant, the facility sports a large tented area used regularly for parties, tournaments, and weddings. A monsterous driving range and practice area completes what is truly a complete golf facility
