2010 season review & 2011 outlook With the 2010 season now in the rearview mirror and with a year of solid recruiting in place the Nyack College Soccer Lady Warrior are filled with optimism and excitement about the unlimited potential ahead for this season and beyond. “Without a doubt, I believe we have every reason to believe that we will take that next big step forward as we continue to put the pieces in place that will allow us to be a highly competitive NCAA D-2 women’s soccer program in the years ahead,” states Head Coach Bill Findley. “What we have to remember is that Rome was not built in a day….and that we are still building at this point. The word “built” is not in our vocabulary just yet.” “All of our veterans were committed to train and develop this past year so that they would be fully prepared to lead this new incoming group of junior college transfers and freshmen. And work they did…..incessantly and with a focus on excellence and passion. I do believe that we are now positioned to compete in all of our matches. Not sure how that will translate into wins and losses but I do believe we will get our fair share of successes on the field throughout this season. No question we have some great potential but our kids have to not lose heart if we encounter some difficult days which we most certainly will as our schedule is very tough. I hope to see our team full of resilience and character and determination and commitment and passion….if so, then we have nothing to worry about.” Findley continued, “We must have a deep and abiding respect for our TEAM Family and the chemistry that must be developed as soon as possible so that we can weather the adverse storms that are on the horizon. While I am very optimistic about what we can achieve I am also very realistic that 2011 has many potential pitfalls and challenges that we must be able to endure and overcome. I believe we have the talent to compete with every opponent on our schedule but the TEAM will have to decide just how much ownership they want to invest in this season and will they be accountable to each other for the possibilities ahead. I am quite confident in what we have established already and cannot wait to see just how much this TEAM will accomplish since we came together a little over 12 months ago.” Captains Jen Jordan and Maranda Ohlson are the heart and soul of the Lady Warriors as they have been empowered by Head Coach Bill Findley to handle the day-to-day nuts and bolts of the operation and thus far they have far exceeded any of the expectations. “These Captains of mine,” reflected Findley, “are 2 of the finest young ladies I have ever been blessed to work with. They lead by example and have all the qualities a Coach would want from his Captains. I am fortunate to enjoy their leadership and have every confidence in how they are impacting the DNA of our TEAM.” Returning veterans include Seniors Susanna Bicknell and Abby Nehlsen, Junior Stephanie Mercier and Sophomores Heather Wakeley and Christy Degelman. As well, Kia Jelley and Meghan Gore are “returning” players with Gore joining the TEAM this past January and Jelley joining the TEAM this fall along with her fastpitch softball duties. As well, Esther Huynh, will be joining the TEAM as a sophomore this season. Bicknell will see playing time in the midfield or up top as a playmaker while Jelley will add much offensive punch as a forward or even in the back as a central defender. Mercier will be expected to contribute as an outside midfielder or forward and she is adept at either of those roles. Wakeley will be able to provide solid play in the outside mid or defender positions. All-CACC honorable mention returnee Degelman will be a force on the left side in the back and will create chaos for most teams trying to attack down that flank. Captain Ohlson returns as a quality central defender and will be counted on for her leadership in that position. Gore will be counted on to be a contributing center mid and help with getting the TEAM into the attack during transition. Captain Jordan can play either outside mid positions and will be needed to help shore up those positions all season. Nehlsen has trained in the off-season as a GK and is showing solid potential in that position along with having the ability to help on the field in a number of positions. Huynh will also be training as a GK this season and will be seeking to improve her skills during this first year on the TEAM.
9
Junior College transfers include Ashlee Hayes, Amanda Halter, Erin Farber, Stacey Cervantes and Sabrina Caires. All five come from highly-regarded junior colleges from around the country and will add much needed experience to this building process. Hayes will be counted on to lead from the center mid position and with her experience as Captain of the 2010 NJCAA Soccer National Champions, Paradise Valley CC (AZ), she will offer tremendous offensive punch in getting the ball forward into the attack as the TEAM general. She will be the dominant playmaker and go-to player for the Warriors. Cervantes and Farber come from the same quality juco, Santiago Canyon College, and will offer technical and tactical skill in any number of positions. Both are very talented and skillful players who will be solid competitors. Halter hails from Laramie County CC and will be a solid force as sweeper but has the natural attacking skills to contribute as a forward as well. She will be counted on in either role throughout the season. Caires comes to Nyack from Solano CC and will be the outside left mid with her dynamic left-footed skills and attacking abilities that will cause many problems for defenses. Incoming freshmen include 8 new faces from around the northeast corridor, as well as, Florida. All will be expected to contribute on some level and see playing time as they continue to develop their skills and talents. Fighting for playing time as the GK position will be Staten Island native Maddy Barbarino and Tallahassee newcomer Sarah Madsen. Both have their strengths and weaknesses and it will be up to GK Coach Jack Carillo to determine who can get the job done the best all season long. Long Island native Jen Martino will be looking to make an impact as a forward and has strong credentials to back up that optimism. Martino is a two-sport athlete at Nyack as she will also play fastpitch softball during the springtime. Paige Neverett from Massachusetts is expected to contribute in the back or midfield and is very versatile with her skill set. Kelsey Labas hails from Connecticut comes in as a freshman with a reputation as a solid 1v1 defender and will be challenged to step up her game as she will be facing extremely talented attackers all season long. Sarah Tum Suden from New Jersey has abilities to contribute as a defender or possibly as a holding center mid and will be needed to mature quickly so that she gets some quality playing time this first season. Riley Roy from Washingtonville, NY will be red-shirted her freshman season while continuing to develop her talents and skills which will be counted on heavily beginning in the fall of 2012. Kari Nehlsen is the younger sister of sister Abby and she she hails from Burkina Faso as a child of missionary parents. Nehlsen will be working on her skills as a defender and midfielder in order to vie for playing time during her freshman season. From all accounts this 2011 edition of the Lady Warriors should prove to be a massive step forward as the program continues to evolve and develop. The returning players who have worked incessantly this past year and the influx of new players will pay huge dividends in the weeks and months ahead. The common denominator for all players is TEAM chemistry and a sense of Family that bonds and unites each soul and spirit as ONE with a vision, purpose and calling that reflects unity and passion toward the same goal. Only time will tell how this TEAM will perform during the 2011 season but it is a foregone conclusion that each time they step on the field the opponents will surely know that they are in for the fight of their life. This TEAM will earn respect over the course of the season and have every reason to embrace the belief that the potential is unlimited in terms of being a highly competitive program now and for many years to come.
