While ballast water is essential for safe and efficient modern shipping operations, it may pose serious ecological, economic and health problems due to the multitude of marine species carried in ships’ ballast water. These include bacteria, microbes, small invertebrates, eggs, cysts and larvae of various species. The transferred species may survive to establish a reproductive population in the host environment, becoming invasive, outcompeting native species and multiplying into pest proportions. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted an international convention for a total ban on transfer of harmful organisms thrugh control and management of ballast water. This has resulted in added installation requirements for new ships from 2012 onwards, and retrofit installation on older ships by 2016. The quality of our water filtration and purification systems guarantees is guaranteed by type apporoved manufacturers. The systems install consists of environmentally friendly separation filters and UV irradiation treatment systems. The UV light kills organisms, viruses and bacteria without affecting the normal operation of the ship. Ballast water is treated both during ballasting and de-ballasting to ensure the dual effect.
Retrofitting with OptiMarin A successful pilot project has been undertaken by GMC Elektro at the GMC Yard in Stavanger, says Project manager Helge Vareberg. —
The M.V. North Mariner, a platform supply vessel owned by Gulf Offshore, has been retrofitted with a 334 m3/h ballast water treatment system provided by OptiMarin. The installation was performed while the ship was in dock in Stavanger. GMC Elektro performed the installation in cooperation with GMC Yard. Due to very limited space, working onboard the North Mariner proved very challenging. Despite these difficulties, the competent crew from GMC performed the installation within the planned budget and time frame.
3-D engineering for demanding operations Space was limited on the North Mariner. For future projects, 3-D engineering graphics will be implemented. This tool will ensure that the understanding and appreciation for effective space utilization is taken into account in the early engineering phase. With 3-D, water treatment packages can be tailor made to the individual vessel. Limited space can be used more efficiently, and installation can be simplified due to pre-assembled packaging. All of this ensures a more efficient quality installation for demanding operations.
