Saved drilling operation with CASE SO L VED on-deck generators Rig owner and operators thought it would be impossible, but GMC managed to run the drilling rig Transocean Winner solely on diesel generators during repairs after a fire shutdown. During Christmas time 2009, the semisubmersible drilling rig Transocean Winner had a fire in a high-voltage board while in the North Sea. The rig switched to an emergency power supply, and the drilling operation had to be suspended immediately. Transocean Winner was leased to a consortium of oil companies for several hundred thousand dollars a day. The Christmas holiday made the

situation additionally complicated. “The entire management team at the main office in Houston was concerned,” says project manager Jarle Lerstøl of Transocean Norway, who contacted the GMC Group. While GMC Diesel managed the diesel generators, sister company GMC Elektro switched high-voltage boards.

temporary equipment to ensure the operation of all important platform functions. Personnel were in place to run the diesel generators, each 1250 kVA.

“It was a demanding and complicated job to put the rig back in operation on emergency capacity, and very few thought we could make it,” Lerstøl says.

“Our challenge was to keep up drilling and vital functions for the crew 24 hours a day without unplanned downtime,” says general manager Bernt Lager of GMC Diesel.

GMC brought in diesel generators from Aggreko Norway and Holland, and transformers from Madrid. Instrument panel containers were rented from DeepOcean. Everything was delivered by express shipment.

The total downtime for the Transocean Winner was reduced to a minimum due to the close follow-up and service from GMC.

“It was very important for Transocean to keep the rig in operation, and the option to tow it to shore would have put it out of operation for a longer period,” Lerstøl from Transocean says.
