alan gilbert new york philharmonic the 2010 11 season
Alan Gilbert among the trunks the Philharmonic has used for its international tours since the 1950s
2010 | 11 Season Take your seat at a concert by Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic, and prepare yourself for a brilliant journey.
“ An evening at the Philharmonic is a total experience. It’s meant to transcend, and transport. Every concert is conceived as a complete journey, and our promise is to bring you with us, to inspire and thrill you as only great music can.” -Alan Gilbert
Every performance is created to take you someplace very different from where you started when you arrived at Avery Fisher Hall. Partly it’s the deft way in which Alan Gilbert conceives surprising and uniquely moving musical evenings that help you experience the music in a new way. Partly it’s the fresh energy he brings to classics old and new that is drawing audiences and critics to their feet in acclaim. And partly it’s the bond between conductor and orchestra that has The New York Times proclaiming, “The orchestra is playing splendidly for Mr. Gilbert…the chemistry seems right.” No matter the reason, the result is the same: an experience that simply cannot be duplicated. THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN Jun. 22-25, 2011 In 1924 Leos Janácek ˇ penned what is likely the most endearing opera ever inspired by a comic strip. This touching tale of the cycle of life in a European forest – featuring a brilliant orchestral score and characters as varied as the forest itself – receives its Philharmonic premiere in a colorful production conducted by Alan Gilbert and directed by Douglas Fitch. MASTERS AND MASTERPIECES
Both Brahms Piano Concertos conducted by Christoph von Dohnányi, with soloists Yefim Bronfman and Radu Lupu. Mahler’s Symphonies No. 4, 5, and 6 conducted by Alan Gilbert and Daniel Harding.

Young People’s Concerts® (YPC) FOR CHILDREN 6 TO 12 YEARS OF AGE
Daniel Boico
Children have a natural curiosity about music, and there’s no better way to encourage their interest than by letting them experience live performances. This season, we’re exploring The Ages of Music in concerts featuring compositions from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods. In only four concerts, kids will get to experience more than 300 years of symphonic tradition.
THE AGES OF MUSIC Baroque Saturday, Dec 4 | 2:00pm Here’s where it all started – the extravagance, grandeur, and drama that is Baroque music. Experience it all with music of the 17th and 18th centuries, including music by Bach and Handel. Classical Saturday, Jan 15 | 2:00pm Why is late-18th century music called Classical? Explore the music of a noble era, with its structure, clarity, and order. Music of Haydn, Mozart, and more. Romantic Saturday, Mar 12 | 2:00pm The 19th century gave us some of the world’s most expressive music. Discover a world driven by emotion, adventure, and imagination, including music by Berlioz and Musorgsky. Modern Saturday, Apr 2 | 2:00pm How did music change during the 20th century and where is it heading today? Check out the most explosive period of musical development ever, with music of Bartók, Schoenberg, and more. Major support provided by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, with additional support from The Theodore H. Barth Foundation. MetLife Foundation is the Lead Corporate Underwriter for the New York Philharmonic’s Education Programs.
24
Young People’s Concerts are hosted by Theodore Wiprud, Director of Education, and conducted by Daniel Boico.
Each Young People’s Concert is preceded at 12:45pm by KidZone Live! – an interactive music fair where kids can try out instruments, play musical games, and preview the theme of the day’s concert. Bring your child to join the fun!
