DOHNÁNYI/DVORˇ ÁK:
PREMIERES
As the orchestra that premiered his New World Symphony, the Philharmonic has long held a close relationship with Dvorˇák, who lived in New York for three years. We celebrate this legacy December 4–13 with conductor Christoph von Dohnányi, and with performances of Dvorˇák’s chamber music masterpieces in our Saturday Matinee Concerts and at the 92nd St. Y.
Christopher Rouse completes his tenure as The Marie-Josée Kravis Composerin-Residence with Thunderstuck, a new orchestral work to be premiered in October; the Philharmonic also performs the New York Premiere of his Flute Concerto and Iscariot. This season includes premieres of Philharmonic commissions from John Adams, Unsuk Chin, Thierry Escaich, and Peter Eötvös as well as the U.S. Premiere of a new work from Thomas Adès.

Imagine a music box that plays something different every time you open it – a doorway into sounds you’ve never imagined and melodies you’ll never forget. Imagine the orchestra itself as a chameleon of infinite colors, a composer as a wizard transforming the sounds around us, and yourself as the greatest transformer of all, making meaning of everything you hear. Discover the super sounding music box that is the New York Philharmonic. November 15, 2014 MELODY TRANSFORMED What happens when a beautiful melody is transported to a new setting? How does its meaning change? And what is a melody anyway? Investigate one of the most mysterious but essential aspects of music in works of Debussy, Prokofiev, and others. January 24, 2015 ORCHESTRA TRANSFORMED The sounds that a symphony orchestra can produce are almost limitless, as varied as the personalities of composers who create for it. Survey the remarkable range of sonorities produced by different combinations of instruments in music by Handel, Chen Qigang, Shostakovich, and others. February 21, 2015 STORY TRANSFORMED Can music tell an actual story? Or does each listener hear their own story? Explore the world of meanings suggested in music by composers from very different cultures.
Each Young People’s Concert is preceded at 12:45pm by Kidzone Live! – an interactive music fair where kids can try out instruments, play musical games, and preview the theme of the day’s concert. Bring your child to join the fun!
May 9, 2015 DANCE TRANSFORMED The waltz craze swept Europe in the 19th century, and that beautiful music has been reinterpreted by composers ever since. Trace the evolution of this most charming music in works by Johann Strauss II, Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel, and Christopher Rouse.

Sponsorships are supported by our extensive marketing platform, highly desirable audience and patron demographics, and one-of-a-kind Philharmonic events. We would be pleased to customize a plan to fulfill your business objectives. Maria Kitsopoulos Cello
“Our section is very close, and we have known each other for many years. To be a part of such a great section is fantastic, and it’s great getting paid to do what you love to do.” – R. Allen Spanjer, on his colleagues in the Philharmonic’s horn section. Al is also the “ears” of the Philharmonic, carefully scrutinizing every recording before it is released as a CD or download.
When Maria was a little girl and heard her family listening to the soundtrack of Bernstein’s West Side Story, the song “Maria” came on and she ran around looking for who was calling her name. In addition to now being a member of the Philharmonic, she performs contemporary music with groups such as Music Mobile and the Guild of Composers, has toured Europe with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, and was a member of the cello quartet CELLO.
SPONSORS The New York Philharmonic is proud to acknowledge the following additional companies that play a leadership role through sponsorship of performances, events, and education activities:
