PRESIDENT’S REPORT Hello to our Members and Arabian enthusiasts It is with pleasure that we bring you this issue of the Arabianz with both on-line and printed forms. A new brochure and other marketing tools are also a work in progress. Congratulations to the Auckland Arabian Horse Club for securing the Karaka Complex for the Nationals 2015. The North Island Championships is also being held in the Auckland area this year and the South Island Championships is back at the wonderful covered arena in Christchurch. The Endurance Nationals will be held over Easter 2015 at the National Equestrian Centre at Taupo, with the North Island Endurance Championships going down to the Wairarapa at the popular venue of Wharemea Sports Grounds, and the South Island Championships still to be confirmed. We have an exciting season of events ahead of us and they all need your support. It could be in entries, sponsorship or coming along on the day to help out and it doesn’t matter how small your contribution is as it all adds up to helping create a successful event. Currently on the Council radar is judges. We have called for a gathering of current judges and we really need your support on this so if you haven’t replied please do so. RAS hold seminars annually if there is enough interest and this year we have Arabian enthusiasts attending both the North and South Island events.These seminars are the ideal introduction to judging for those who are interested in this path. LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Firstly I would like to thank everyone who has contributed or advertised in this Studs & Stallions issue of the Arabianz. This is the first printed issue in quite some time. Hopefully with continued support from our members and advertisers, this can now be a regular occurrence. We have done a drastic price drop on the advertising costs, to try and encourage our members to support our magazine. As we all know times are hard at present. But we need to continue to bring our Arabians to the forefront of breeding in NZ. And the only way we can do that is to promote them and show them to the world. Already we are putting together details for the next issue. If you would like to book a page or advertise, once again send me an email and we can put something together. Annual General Meeting 2015 The 2015 AGM will be hosted by the Taranaki Arabian Horse Club. Date and details to be confirmed. National Arabian Championships 2016 The Canterbury Arabian Enthusiast Group’s application to host the 2016 National Arabian Championships in Christchurch was approved. Arabian Judges Expression of interest forms have been emailed to all NZAHBS members and RAS judges inviting them to become Arabian judges and attend a seminar. NZAHBS Listed Judges have been sent an Annual Return and invited to attend a seminar. Response/ uptake to be discused at next Council meeting and contact made with all interested parties.
Stallion - all individuals who have control over the stallion for the purpose of serving mares and signing service certificates must be Full members. Mare - all owners must be Full members in order for the resulting progeny to be recorded as bred by the partnership. If an alternative foal arrangement is agreed between the owners the mare needs to be leased to the individual member by the partnership in order for the resulting progeny to be recorded as bred by the individual. The horse MUST be officially transferred into the joint names of the partnership/syndicate. If any of the owners change - an official transfer must be signed by all existing owners and lodged with the Society, along with the original registration certificate and transfer fee. Next Council Meeting The next NZAHBS Council meeting will be held on 24 September 2014 in Auckland. If you wish to have any matters raised at this meeting, please ensure that they are submitted to the Office at least 14 days out from the meeting.

ENDURANCE by Melanie Barker The Endurance NZ AGM was held in Palmerston North on Saturday the 12th July 2014. There was an excellent turnout with 70 people attending the AGM from all over New Zealand. This was the first year that an Endurance Breeders Award was presented. The criteria was one point for every qualified kilometre, 40kms and above. Horses must be registered with the NZAHBS and the breeder must also be a current member of NZAHBS. This is a NZAHBS Trophy sponsored by Arahi Arabians, Ken McGrath and Melanie Barker. The result this year was extremely appropriate as the winners Glenmore Arabian Stud, Murray and Andrea Smith, have two horses in the team representing NZ Endurance at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. Congratulations to Glenmore Arabian Stud.

GREENER PASTURES ELYSIUM C (US) (Enzo x Silken Sable) An emotional day on the 16th July as a terrible decision had to be made. Elysium C was put down due to an incurable septic infection in his hock. How he got the infection, we have no idea, as there was not a scratch on him. To make matters worse one of his testicles got crushed during the operation/ preparation procedure to get semen for freezing and it is now very unlikely that frozen semen will be available to the public. The very same day another disaster as my good dog got kicked and had her jaw broken. In my opinion Elysium C had the potential to influence the Arab horse breed in NZ just as his full brother Eden C has done both in the USA and Europe. A large percentage of Eden C’s progeny have been champions in both the show ring and the breeding barn. Unfortunately very few people had the pleasure of seeing Elysium C. He was a tall, beautiful 15.3hh chestnut Stallion. Having no foals on the ground and only bred to 4 mares this season I assure you we are waiting with excitement for the foals to hit the ground in October/November. Mel Gubb, Araleigh Arabians

Ngapa Phoenix was euthanised in June due to a large recurrent skin cancer on his hind leg. Bred by Bob Edward in 1995, he was resident stallion at Craig Royston Stud for several years before being gelded and sold to Nicola Starkey. He sired 26 foals, over half of which were Purebreds, and the most successful ones being Craig Royston Sonatina who has won quite a few 100-120km rides with Brigette Smith, and her full sister Craig Royston Symphony an Open Endurance & CTR horse owned by Deidre Bartlett, both mares are out of Craigroy Sonata (Ngapa Son x Arabian Gold). The Adams’ Ngodevwa Yanni is also a short distance endurance horse and is the only stallion by Ngapa Phoenix. Phoenix himself did over 1,000kms of endurance riding mainly with Gayle Truscott and Nicola after we sold him. He has been her only horse and was very much loved and enjoyed. WORLD CRABBET CONVENTION 2013
by Robin Marshall Dozens of Crabbet Arabian enthusiasts from around the world met in the British town of Buckingham last northern summer for the first World Crabbet Convention since 2005 in Australia. As time dilutes the gene pool of the Crabbet Arabian horse, those present - from Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and Europe - agreed it was even more important for like-minded breeders to meet to share notes. The convention started with a parade of horses at nearby Addington Manor, an indoor equestrian facility. This featured nearly a hundred horses from early Crabbet families. Horses were shown both in hand and under saddle, with commentary from Arabian stalwart and NZAHBS Patron Peter Upton. The horses were all sorted into family groups, and some appeared more than once. There was also an endurance display, and an exciting costume display with horses and riders at full gallop for the finale. All of the horses were presented beautifully and were in fabulous condition, and we all appreciated the effort put in by so many people to get their horses there and show them off, particularly as many also attended the convention and had the British National Championships coming up. The seminar was a full day of speakers and presentations relating to the Crabbet Arabian. First up, Peter Upton spoke on the origins of the “Crabbet” and how it came about, and its major importance to the Arabian breed. He talked about the stud’s history and the evolution of the original mare and stallion lines. Many of his original artworks – included in “The Arab Horse” were also on display throughout the convention. Looking at the stud in hindsight, Upton said: “Lady Wentworth was not a preservationist – she was a pragmatist. She looked to widen the genetic pool of Crabbet.” In bringing in Jeroan and Dargee, she reintroduced some old lines back into the stud. “And she also bought mares in foal to other stallions.” Australian breeder Jennifer Hawkins talked about the Crabbet horse in her country, and noted that the Crabbet was in a relatively stable position in the market, despite the recession, and that “quite good prices for well-trained and green saddle horses” were being realised by Crabbet breeders. She also said, however, that there were many unregistered horses in Australia with good breeding. “With the right paperwork they can be registered down the track.” She said there were moves afoot in Australia for the Crabbet Arabian to be recognised with “rare breed” 12
status, to assist in efforts to preserve the bloodlines. Geneticist Michael Bowling emphasised that genetic problems are present in every breed and represent a minority of any horse’s functional genes. “These diseases are not a problem – we know where they are”. Preferring not to use the term “carrier” when referring to genetic status, instead calling the horse “positive”, Bowling said there were not enough horses in the Crabbet gene pool to “discard” some horses. “We have to work around them and with them. Just be open about it,” he said. “We can’t treat the gene as if it’s a disease. That’s the message.” Bowling described CA as worse than SCID, because of the former’s “enormous range of effect”. As expected the topic of genetics opened much discussion from the floor, including the question of voluntary disclosure of a horse’s status to registries. As US breeder Mark Thomason said, “Responsible breeding and education has to be our priority.” British breeder Alexia Ross talked of the “Shrinking Gene Pool”. She said that the Old English (purebreds imported to the UK before WW2 and usually over 85% Crabbet) gene pool had dwindled, but Crabbet numbers had increased since the last convention in 2005 in Toowoomba. Many horses in the early days were double registered, being also in the “oriental section” of the General Stud Book (for thoroughbreds), and descendents were able to be registered there up to 1964. She showed many pictures of the early imports, Crabbet and others, all with a “strong desert type, and with style and movement”. However, she noted that even these horses showed variety in type: As she said, “Early English Arabians were not all one type.” Betty Finke talked about the influence of the Crabbet Arabian in Europe, with special mention going to Belgium and Bright Wings, the sire of Odessa, in turn the dam of Padron. Finke shared many pictures of performance Crabbets in Belgium and The Netherlands, and noted that higher percentage Crabbets were “coming back”. She said Dutch breeding appeared to mostly comprise of RussianCrabbet lines, and Crabbets in Germany, Sweden, Denmark and France “take some finding”. However, she said that “if people want performance horses, they turn to Crabbet horses. Even in Germany.” Long-time breeder Caroline Sussex also put up some frank comments on genetics. Her Binley Arabian Stud is founded on the lines of the Worth Stud of her mother, Rosemary Archer, co-author of The Crabbet Arabian Stud, the definitive work on the topic. Sussex said she was “very adamant” about movement: “If a horse can’t move it can’t do

anything”. She advised breeders to look further afield to improve their lines: “Don’t just stick to what you’ve got. Send your mares to other studs”. Sussex said that Lady Wentworth told her mother: “Cross the silver and gold lines.” Chairperson Susan Hawes ended the session with a 15-minute panel discussion on strengthening the Crabbet “Community” to share information and knowledge. Some advice to come out of this session was to breed mares young, then have them embark on a performance career, as their body has adapted. “Mares compete much better”. Michael Bowling told those present to “follow your passion”, and to “work in sub-groups to retain genetic diversity.” The following day was the start of the Convention stud tour, which was to go to several renowned studs and also to those of “newer” breeders, covering a variety of bloodlines and philosophies. The good old Kiwi stud tour concept - where meeting-goers pile onto a bus and head to several stud farms over the course of several hours - is unknown in Britain. There, the stud tour is a more
drawn out process over greater distances, with up to two breeders a day readying their stock and properties for visitors over a period of several days. We were able to do only a day’s touring, but were pleased to see the horses of Anne Brown’s Gadebrook Stud, in Oundle. Anne, who was then the incumbent president of the Arabian Horse Society in Britain, breeds for racing, endurance, and ridden showing. Later in the week the Convention attendees visited the prestigious British National Arabian Championships at Malvern, as guests of the Arab Horse Society. The show featured a solid, wellsupported range of Crabbet classes, which were judged by NZAHBS Patron Princess Alia of Jordan. She also presented the Princess Muna Saddle of Honour to the SH Sabrina family group. Two-year-old filly Maiad won the overall Crabbet Championship, with the stallion Fairwinds Jedi runner-up. I arrived at 11.45pm New Years Eve at Auckland Airport (2004). Starting a New Year and new partnership. Travelling around NZ and crossing the Cook Strait to the Nationals in Christchurch. I don’t like ships – I prefer first class air travel, but most of my travels are in a truck. I have been very lucky to have had such a great team of partners, grooms, handlers and riders. Together we worked as a team. Thanks to you all. Special thanks to all the worldwide judges who gave me the top awards and told me I can hold my own anywhere in the world. It has taken nine long years of sweat and tears to finally complete my “Room of Fame” with the Elite Roll of Merit. STALLION PROFILE Taurere Sunzada “The Epitome of the Versatile Arab” As a breeder I believe a horse should not only look good, he should also prove his worth in performance. By competing in a variety of different fields Sunzada has demonstrated the versatility of the Arab breed. At the same time he is my everyday riding horse and even after weeks or months of inactivity he is still happy to be dragged out of the paddock to go for a ride. Showing Sunzada has won numerous championships and other awards both in hand and under saddle, including a ridden North Island Championship. His achievements under saddle demonstrate not only his wonderful temperament and superb movement, but also his adaptability when very few stallions are asked to prove themselves as ridden horses. Endurance Far from being just a show pony, however, Sunzada has been a workhorse in several spheres. In endurance he proved to have great ability, showing huge energy coupled with a very low heart rate. At Waimiha in 1999 he contested possibly the toughest course I have ever encountered. The Waimiha track was always steep and testing (they don't make 'em like that anymore!) but on this occasion the horses quickly churned it into a bog under unremitting rain. The 80km that would normally have taken five hours to complete took seven; Sunzada did exceptionally well to take third place as well as Best Conditioned Horse. I believe Sunzada had the potential to win in international company had he continued his endurance career. Dressage However, I had other plans for him. That great Arab movement deserved to be shown off in open company. Sunzada clearly impressed the judges by winning his first registered dressage test - with a score of 73.8%! Moving steadily through the grades, he progressed to Elementary (Level 3) and could certainly have gone higher with a more competent rider. Wherever we travelled for dressage competitions, Sunzada always stood out as the only Arab among the Warmbloods and Thoroughbreds. In Company His sensible attitude and sure-footedness makes Sunzada a reliable and willing stock horse and farm hack. He is as happy mustering cattle as he is hacking along the beach or roads.

Sunzada has always been ridden among other horses, whether with a friend or two in the forest or in large riding club groups. Simply taking him out among non-Arab enthusiasts has had a positive influence. He has given a number of beginners their first ride, from small children to 60 year olds. My party trick for visitors is to clamber on and ride him bareback without bridle or halter. A brief show biz stint saw him masquerading as a racehorse in the Waipu Sesquicentenary Pageant, which required him to gallop across a floodlit ‘stage’ into the dark to be confronted by a pipe band in full voice. Progeny Sunzada’s offspring have included showring winners and endurance performers (a son, Fern Hill Suriya, was exported to Dubai). At 24 years of age Sunzada is still making babies, and being ridden.

STUD NEWS Candy Lodge This year has been exceedingly busy with animals and of course the continual R&M on a lifestyle block. Our Thoroughbred float of 22 years has since been ripped apart and is now waiting for a rebuild – hopefully to be completed before the show season begins. Our 5 horses have had a fairly tough winter this year, with Candy Shalimar having an allergic reaction to worm paste, then both Shalimar and Marhaba Melika having severe conjunctivitis and chest infections from the cold, and not to mention warts on Candy Sahara’s nose (the first ever and hopefully last foal in my life to have these). Shalimar (being barefoot and in these wet conditions), also has seedy toe, which is being fixed by continual remedial work and now the application of metalex. Sahara’s warts are being eradicated by the application of marmite – yes this really works! And the eyes are now on the mend with ointment, as trying to clean with colloidal silver and applying eye drops, proved ineffective. We have been working with Sahara (8 months) and Candy Dakota (21 months) on the basics and they are both very grounded for their age. They have their hooves filed, have had the saddle blanket and surcingle on, know how to back, stand, walk and trot and have been taken for walks around the farms. Sahara has been on the float a couple of times without any hesitation, but not transported as such – due to the float being dismantled. Her personality is super and we believe she is going to be a beautiful horse, probably one of my best – hence her nickname “Princess”. I am trying to teach her to come to a whistle, but this is still work in progress. She will be my show horse and replacement for Zara, who sadly had to be laid to rest last year, rising 29 years. Dakota is more advanced at his age and has had the bridle on, is floating, leads from another horse, knows inhand and is learning to stretch out. His movement is ‘to die for’ and we are looking forward to seeing how he develops in the future. We have dual registered these two with both the Golden Horse Society and NZAHBS. With the National Sport Horse progeny that we have had out of Marhaba Melika, I have booked Melika in with the same sire – Rebel’s El Dorado. With the breeding to-date, we have secured two palominos and look forward to the next one, which will be for sale. Melika is our ‘cash cow’ and we intend to show our two beauties at the end of this year, so that people can see the potential of this super breed. Our two riding horses - Shalimar and Candy, are ridden most weekends, including throughout winter, 22
so that we don’t have to entertain the spring change, which so many experience. We feed hay out every day and the horses get hard feed in the weekends plus have the addition of carrots and apples in their diet – along with the mineral licks, selenium, garlic, etc. Both these horses are great to put children on and love being hacked around the farms in the neighbourhood. We ride on the road a lot so they have to be road safe and very grounded, particularly with all the inconsiderate drivers on the road nowadays. My friend from Katikati visited over the weekend and it was nice to be acknowledged as the only person that she would ever lend her horse to. I will always have a passion and love for horses and can never anticipate a life without them. It is great to have a husband who is beginning to share my experiences and participate in the equine world. All the best to every one for the upcoming breeding season and I look forward to seeing some of you at a few shows over the next year or so. Shaheen Al Saba (AU) has a busy season ahead with mares to serve and then he will be ridden by Cindy Rowe in Taranaki, all going well. We are expecting two partnership foals this spring; CRA Sihr Shahrif (US) x SS Shula for DH and Talitha, and Shaheen Al Saba (AU) x Euralea Fire N Desire for DH and Euralea, The latter will be a full sibling to 2013 colt foal Destino DH (pictured). It has been almost a year since SG Stud relocated and moved into our permanent property in Matangi just outside of Hamilton. With 20 acres of free draining soil, a breeding area, stables and ample sheds we felt blessed to finally be able to offer superior agistment services to clients. Our 2013-2014 season kicked off well with the purchase of another Redwood Lodge Firewalker (AU) son ‘Orlando’ from the late Alison Steward. He is an exceptional partbred with a lovely soft nature and temperament. I am very excited about his future here with us at SG Stud. This season should see him attend a few shows in hand and at the end start the breaking in process to get him under saddle. We had huge success with the breeding season with almost all mares getting in foal first cycle via live cover and AI. There are 6 foals due by Aspen Hills Shell Fire with one of those a purebred, and one due by Orlando.
We had one Anglo Arabian foal due by Aspen Hills Shell Fire and he was born on the 6th November 2013. SG Incendio (pictured below) was everything we hoped to breed for the Show Ring and we wish his new owner, Paula Brambley, all the best with him. Aspen Hills Shell Fire went to his first ever show under saddle at the Taranaki North Island Arabian Championships and was crowned Champion Purebred Stallion and Champion Novice Ridden Purebred. This show was one of the best shows we have ever been to and we encourage more Arabian people to support this show. We will most certainly be back next season. Holly Farm
“Holly Farm” has begun gathering its chickens and looks forward to the future of the Arabian horses for which it has already dedicated over 50 years and is aiming to celebrate 150 years since the arrival of the Marshall family to New Zealand. This past year was started with the return of Chaswyck Al Zayd (AU) (Asfour x Simeon Shakova) to the farm, his injury became very apparent and hence the earnest effort to work towards his careful use. Fortunately we have been able to achieve a very special few foals to look forward to this coming season. These will be the first for the “Al Badi Straight Egyptian” program which is now fully established. Also welcome another new “Holly Farm” generation via Dahma El Qadirah (Simeon Sapar x Silver Naazirah (Saracen Karim x Naaziri (Naaddel x Silver Lady (Silver Sparkle x Sadik)) who is expecting this coming season to “Zayd”. In addition to the purchase of Chaswyck Manara (AU) in foal to Simeon Saraaf (AU) for the “Al Badi” program I also added back to the “Holly Farm” bloodlines with the repurchase of Dahma Sa’adani who combined the Egyptian lines who have given us so much, while she bought with her some of the wonderful breeding of “Waimeha” and “Ngapa” via “Taurere Stud”. Being a year for opportunities I was thrilled to be able to purchase Halimas Princess Annamotion (AU), the only Prince Fa Moniet daughter in New

Zealand other than my Straight Egyptian daughter Simeon Shakova (AU). The day I saw Prince Fa Moniet in Australia I knew I had seen a vision, I was able to touch him and walked away very satisfied. Having two significant daughters now is rather a dream. Could this year get any better… surely not..? A hopeful enquiry to Simeon Stud bought about an outstanding shipment of two young fillies by Mulayh Ibn Maaressa accompanied with a special gift, a weanling gelding Simeon Sam for my son Trent. For the first time I also negotiated Simeon Shimona, a daughter of Anaza Bay Shahh (Shaikh Al Badi) who will remain in Australia to be bred to Simeon’s Immesmerize this coming season. The absolute final addition for now will be the purchase of MW Tosca (DE), this Straight Russian mare has the potential to be the “jewel in the crown” these outstanding athletic bloodlines are gathering influence at “Holly Farm”. The Russian influence was started by my father’s purchase of Naaddel (x Naadirah) and furthered by my breeding of Pradaa (Naazim x GG Sasha)…! What a developing journey. Next year will see a 150th Celebration which will be excuse enough to go all out for the Arabian horse at “Holly Farm”. It has been an eventful year so far. In February the two year old gelding Quasim (Zibaq Khan x Sunny Brae Jasmine) left us to join Jo Forrester’s herd of horses down in Dunedin. Jo has enjoyed a lot of success with her Quassa gelding Kadin, so Quasim has big hoof prints to fill. Then, a month later the rising five year old gelding Zeuxis (Quassa x Zhola) worked his charm over Bridgett James when Bridgett and her mother Ainsley King called in to visit. Unable to get Zeuxis out of her mind, Bridgett called back to see him again and decided she was going to have Zook. So, suddenly I had to get myself organised to break him in. Not having ridden for a couple of years myself, I called upon Zook’s brother Zibaq Khan to be my anchor horse. Zibaq Khan proved to be true to his pedigree and was a rock solid mentor for his younger brother. When it came time for the colt Qairo (Zibaq Khan x Sunny Brae Jasmine) to be gelded, the vet made a chance remark about how I “would not be breeding
any more horses”. He was not the first person to express that assumption, however, it did give me cause to reflect on the future of the stud. Then, as if by divine intervention, an opportunity presented itself and all of a sudden the future was clear. On the 2nd of July the pure Crabbet five year old stallion Pevensey Regent (Arfaja Rococo x Pevensey Baybe - Sarafire) arrived from Australia to stay with us. Bred by Leon Bennett formally of Australia and now domiciled in Auckland, Pevensey Regent provides the stud with a suitor for our two full Quassa fillies, Zareth-Shahar and Zhenya al Hadiye. Regent’s importation has also created a lot of interest in the Crabbet lines again here in New Zealand and we feel very fortunate to have a stallion of Regent’s calibre playing an integral part in the stud’s development. Louise Raymond Having owned Arabians most of my life and always being an admirer of the Crabbet lines, early in 2013 I made the decision to fulfill a lifelong dream of breeding pure Crabbet horses in New Zealand. Arabians with all lines tracing back to horses which were purchased, owned and bred by Crabbet Park in the UK. I’m already the proud owner of the pure Crabbet Australian imported gelding Inshallah Encounter (Tommie (Banderol) x Fenwick Rene (Greylight)) who I have owned since 2010. After riding and owning this horse of my dreams and having previously owned two Banderol Granddaughters and now a Grandson I decided that these were the lines I wanted as a foundation for my new stud. A trip was made to Inshallah Arabians in Australia. After a lovely visit seeing some stunning Arabians and meeting the O’Dea’s, who are the nicest people, I was given the opportunity to purchase one of the stud’s proven pure Crabbet broodmares, Inshallah Indiana (Tommie x Inshallah Impulse (Crenel)). I of course leapt at the chance. Indiana is a 15.1hh, big bodied, incredible moving mare. Inshallah horses are renowned not only for their beauty, but also for their performance ability and this was a deciding factor.

Indiana made the journey to NZ in February this year, safely in foal to Inshallah’s current stallion Monarch Lodge Ambition (Tommie x Pevensey Raida). Her foal is eagerly awaited and is due in September. The start of my dream….. Not long after Indiana’s arrival, I was given the opportunity to add to my new broodmare band when offered a pure Crabbet mare who was already in NZ. Fenwick Regenta (AU) (Fenwick Phantom (Greylight) x Fenwick Regina (Sindh)) was imported by Lyn Marshall in 2006. Being a mare I’ve always admired and closely related to my Encounter’s dam, I again leapt at the chance. Regenta is currently on lease to fellow Crabbet enthusiast Michelle Zielazo of Alasaan Performance Horses in Canterbury. She will be put in foal to Michelle’s Anglo Arabian stallion Alexanderschante (AU). So my Crabbet Arabian stud has started. I’ll be forever grateful to Larry and Marillyn O’Dea of Inshallah Arabians in Australia and Lyn Marshall of Aurora Stud in NZ for allowing me to have the opportunity to purchase such wonderful mares with old bloodlines up close in their pedigrees as foundation mares for my stud. REGISTRATION The NZAHBS Council has recently brought the Purebred Registration Requirements back in line with the green “Rules and Regulations 2007” booklet. Following is a summary of the current requirements:

Annual Mare & Stallion Returns have been reintroduced. Returns must be completed and returned to the office by 1 April each year. If you haven’t already submitted your 2013/14 Mare & Stallion returns – please complete & return to the office now. Electronic forms are available to download off the website.

Purebred Applications for Registration are due by 1st July following the end of the breeding season which the foal was born. If you haven’t submitted your 2013/14 foal registrations - please complete and return to the office now.
A DNA sample must accompany all Purebred Applications for Registration, including geldings, whose hair will be held in storage in case it is needed at a later date.

Both the Sire & Dam of the foal must be DNA typed.

If breeding via Artificial Insemination both the Mare owner and the Stallion owner must apply for an AI Permit prior to breeding in this manner.
REQUIREMENTS The self-carbonated Application for Registration forms will be discontinued as they do not comply with the current registration regulations. Updated Purebred & Derivative registration forms are being created and will be available to download from the NZAHBS website soon. In the meantime – please continue to use the self-carbonated forms as follows: • The Stallion Owner must complete and sign the Service Certificate. • The Mare Owner (breeder) must complete and sign the Dam Owner’s Certificate, Mare Return & Markings. • A qualified Veterinary Surgeon must sign off on the identity of the foal – there is no box for this on the self-carbonated form – please have them sign above the horse diagrams. • Please ensure that all whorls are noted on the application form with an ‘X’.

If you have a Colt that you are undecided whether to geld or not an extension can be given until 1 November at which time he must be registered as a Colt or Gelding and the relevant fee paid.
A registered colt is eligible for a gelding refund on production of a gelding certificate if he is gelded before 2 years of age, has not covered any mares & is still owned by the breeder.

Horse & Law by Alice Barker A previous article we published touched on the importance of establishing how you own your horse. The next consideration is what the ownership structure is. The word Ownership represents the many obligations and rights a person has in and over their horse. Ownership can be complex, particularly when multiple people own the horse. But it is not unusual for numerous people or entities to join together to purchase or lease a horse. With the exception of syndication, the nature of the relationship between owners or lessees is often undefined and at times ambiguous. This in itself is not is not an issue when owners or lessees are all on the same page regarding the management of the horse. However, an ambiguous ownership structure with no written agreement between the owners or lessees can cause no end of issues when there is a dispute or difference between them. It is unknown to most owners or lessees of horses that when they purchase or lease a share in a multi person or multi entity situation, the legal nature of their relationship will either be a partnership or a coownership. The categorisation of ownership is significant as a partnership has a separate set of rules to regulate the relationship than a co-ownership does. For example, if nine people own shares in a well-bred and performed mare and cannot agree if she should be sold or used for breeding, what do they do? If the ownership structure is considered a partnership the owners will likely be able to turn to the Partnerships Act 1908 for guidance on how to manage matters between them. However if the ownership structure is a co-ownership the only option will likely be an application to court when a dispute arises and it cannot be resolved. For an ownership structure to be considered a partnership it must fall within the definition of the Partnerships Act. The Partnerships Act states that a partnership is the relation which subsists between persons carrying on a business in common with a view to profit. Further rules for determining existence of partnership are also stated in the Partnerships Act. The Partnership Act also provides a mechanism for the partnership to be dissolved; therefore, if any owner wishes to dissolve the partnership they have the power under the Act to do so. The consequence of a partnership being dissolved is usually the sale of all partnership property, followed by the payment of partnership liabilities and then the distribution of any proceeds to the partners. Owners in a partnership must be aware that under the Partnerships Act any difference in ordinary matters connected with the partnership business may be decided by a majority of the partners, but no change may be made in the nature of the partnership business without the consent of all existing partners. Therefore, if only 8 out of the 9 owners wished to sell the mare and they proceeded with the sale they would be in breach of the Partnerships Act. On the other hand, if the ownership structure does not fall within the parameters of the Partnerships Act the structure will be a co-ownership. Co-ownerships are not regulated by an Act and, therefore, if disputes or differences arise as noted above an owner may need to make a court application to seek a resolution. Whether a partnership or co-ownership, the best way to enable the management of the horse, and avoid potential disputes, is to make sure you either have a written partnership agreement or property sharing agreement in a co-ownership situation. At a minimum the documents should note the structure; who the owners are and their shares; a description of the horse and its main purpose; how decisions are made (majority or unanimous); how disputes are managed; and how the structure is ended.
