Welcome
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello to our Members and Arabian Enthusiasts The current Council of the New Zealand Arab Horse Breeders’ Society (Inc) has had a Year Book on their wish list for some time now and I feel very proud to finally see this in print. This Year Book is a celebration of the Arabian Horse in New Zealand over the past 12 months, and going forward, a special publication capturing a part of our history. I sincerely thank those Councillors and our National Secretary, Fiona McLachlan, who have put in many hours to ensure that this publication came to fruition. Without the Fuji Xerox team in Hamilton, New Zealand, this would have been an almost impossible task for the NZAHBS to undertake and I cannot express strongly enough my gratitude to Fuji Xerox for their assistance with the printing of our 2015 Year Book. The Arabian Horse is a truly beautiful and incredibly versatile animal, and along with their breeders, handlers, riders and supporters, deserve to be recognised for their many achievements. Please sit back and enjoy the NZAHBS 2015 Year Book. Regards to you all Melanie Barker President • New Zealand Arab Horse Breeders’ Society (Inc)

ELLENNA CAUDWELL
Brian Ross Young Achiever Award 2015
I have owned Windvale Faraz (Tahira Faris x Windvale Azleta) for 3 years. “Noah” arrived in January 2012 as a pony who was recently broken in and very unsure of people. Now when waiting at shows if he likes somebody he will touch them on the shoulder to let them know he's there. We compete in many different areas, but our passion is eventing. During the first half of 2014 we competed at CNC 105 level. It was amazing to win the New Zealand Pony Club Eventing Championships held at Kihikhihi. The trophies for dressage and the overall Champions have many years of history. You realise the importance of these trophies when you are told that they are not to be engraved until the drug test results are back. During the spring season we moved up to CNC1* (CNC1* is the new name for the old Novice Horse Trials). Some of the jump heights are: Cross Country maximum height 1.10m, with brush 1.30m, maximum width top spread 1.40m, maximum height base spread 2.10m. The optimum Cross Country speed is 520 metres per minute. Show Jumping is 1.15m with spreads up to 1.50m for triple bars.

In 2015 we are planning to attend the New Zealand National Arabian Championships Show, Horse of the Year to ride in Level 2 dressage (my last year as I turn 16 before August), as well as show jumping. I also plan to continue competing in Horse Trials. Noah and I have a lot of fun together - this is our latest trick...
Other: We regularly attend Pony Club. I was due to sit my Pony Club B Certificate on Noah with the mock exam to be held in December 2014 and the actual exam in January 2015, but due to Noah contracting a virus I was unable to present for the mock exam. I'm now hoping to sit my B certificate later in 2015. We were also entered in the North Island Championships hosted by the Auckland Arabian Horse Club but unfortunately we were unable to compete. CYPRUS AL THAQIB
Waho Award 2015 Cyprus Al Thaqib is a 15.3hh Purebred Arabian gelding by Joda Aloof (AU) (deceased) out of Cyprus Alii Esperance and was bred by Penny Buckthought of Cyprus Arabians. “Chaos” deserves this trophy not because he has won a showing or endurance national championship, because he hasn’t and probably never will, because that is not my passion. Chaos deserves this trophy because he is versatile and is changing the way people perceive the Arabian breed. People who thought I was nuts buying him for eventing and show jumping are completely taken aback by his talent. He has had many top coaches comment on his ability and potential to be a great horse. I purchased Chaos when he was 18 months old and I was 17 years old. I have produced him myself and am very proud of all we have achieved so far. Chaos was shown in hand as a two and three year old for many Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons at shows like Feilding and Manawatu A&P’s in the Arabian section and also local riding club events. As a four year old I started Chaos myself he was the first and easiest horse I have ever broken in. I showed him under saddle as a four year old and at his first two shows he received Reserve Champion and at his third he took out Champion and best mount suitable for a beginner, this was after a couple months of being broken in. He then continued in leaps and bounds winning
8
his first ever show hunter round with the judges commenting that he would make a top show hunter horse. He was selected a few months later as the reserve for the Manawatu Team to compete at North Island Show Hunter Championships. My passion is for show jumping and eventing so we didn’t continue down the show hunter path, instead he excelled at show jumping and eventing as a 5 year old placing 2nd in his second ever one day event at Pre-training Level then moving up to Training Level and placing there as well. Chaos placed in nearly every show jumping event he entered up to 1.10m and also placed in all the dressage competitions he was entered in. He represented Feilding Pony Club on numerous occasions winning in games like bending, flag race, barrel race, mug race and also helping bring home the best team jumping trophy. This last year Chaos has had show jumping wins and placings up to 1.25m, schooling 1.45m at home. Placings up to Pre-Novice Level eventing, schooling 1* and 2* level. He has had placings in Level 2 dressage, schooling higher level movements like half pass, shoulder in, leg yield. For a 7 year old Arabian horse, or 7 year old at all, this is a huge achievement over a variety of disciplines in a short time and as a team we will only continue to improve and promote the Arabian breed further. In addition he does liberty work, can bow and shake hands and do bare back bridle-less dressage and jumping.
Chaos’ biggest achievement to date was at the 2014 Horse of the Year Show. We took him there for the experience in a big atmosphere and were not expecting to come home with any ribbons. He was double clear in both 1.15m show jumping rounds, putting in the first double clear in one class and placing 6th out of 140 competitors, this for a 6 year old Arabian gelding that was never bred for jumping, is a huge achievement. He was also probably the only horse there to fall asleep waiting to go into the show jumping arena showing his incredible easy going nature. Chaos was recently placed 4th in the 1.10m class at Central Districts show jumping out of a huge class of 96. The next weekend at Feilding A&P show he won his first ever round-the-ring jumping competition. The following week we had the vet out because although he achieved great results he hadn’t been feeling 100%. After a vet and farrier visit he was diagnosed with Laminitis. Luckily we caught it in time and after a month of careful monitoring he came right. It just goes to show how much he didn’t want to let me down and kept jumping even though he was in pain. Chaos is truly a one in a million horse and a great ambassador for the Arabian breed. He has captured the hearts of many non-Arabian liking people and has quite a following on Facebook. He is awesome. by Liana Mikaera

GERZANNE ARABIAN STUD (est 1967)
NZ Breeder of theYear Award 2013 & 2015 Although the stallion Simeon Shomer (AU) made a huge improvement in our breeding programme, it was not until the four month old Straight Egyptian Stallion Simeon Shemini (AU) (Asfour (DE) x Simeon Shuala (US)), became the cornerstone of Gerzanne Stud, that a tremendous impact took place.
Our passion for the Arabian horse has not diminished since first importing Robinia, with Beenie at foot and in foal carrying Suumah - the foundation mares of Gerzanne, for surely creation is the art of turning dreams in to reality. by Bev Jones & Sue Spratt
Simeon Shemini (AU) by the time he was four years old was a multi Champion, including New Zealand National Junior Champion; New Zealand National Champion Stallion and his greatest achievement – New Zealand National Supreme Exhibit. His sons and daughters have gone on to achieve 20 National Champions and 8 Reserve National Champion Titles.
1
We have always believed, like many others, that the mares are the heart of the stud and have endeavoured to import, retain and breed mares of the highest quality. We are proud to have on our wall Roll of Merit Progeny Awards for six of our past and present broodmares and of course “our boys” Shomer and Shemini. From the importation of our first mare Robinia from Australia, Gerzanne is now breeding the sixth generation of her offspring from several mare families. We both have our favourites – for Sue it is SS Barzani (three times Reserve National Champion Mare) and her daughter SS Bahiya; for Bev it is Rula and her daughter SS Ari (2007 New Zealand National Champion Mare, joining three of her sisters for National Titles). SS Ari is expecting her first foal by TF Fezzan (US) in September and we cannot wait for this special baby. We are extremely proud of our horses and our success has helped us affirm that what we are doing at Gerzanne is a good thing, as one beautiful foal after another is born, it is pretty hard to get discouraged.

GLENMORE ARABIANS
NZ Endurance Breedeer of theYear 2014 by Hilary Webb
Glenmore N’Zeus (Dunwingeri Kahlil (AU) x Four Winds Nalani) placed second in a 160km South Island Endurance Championship with John Stevenson.
Glenmore Arabian Stud has been producing performance horses for 23 years so it was no surprise that the stud was presented with the inaugural NZAHBS High Points New Zealand Endurance Breeder Award for 2014 at the ESNZ Endurance AGM in July 2014. It all started in 1992, when Murray Smith gave his young wife, Andrea, a young purebred chestnut filly for a 21st birthday present. That filly was Four Winds Tayr (Royal Gold Treasure (AU) x Trinket). At that time both Murray and Andrea were active in eventing so they set up a broodmare base to breed functional performance horses, primarily for eventing.
1
Until 2004, three day eventing at the top level included an endurance section on the second day of competition, followed by the cross country phase. Arab and Arab crosses excelled in this format. Carol Harrison’s 1978 Eventing World Championship mount, Topic was by Shereef (AU). Carol Harrison also competed on Topic’s half brother El Kabah (by El Sala). Later she had Casino (Othello x Carmen).
2
The big, rangy bay gelding, Glenmore Hercules (Royal Gold Treasure (AU) x Huia) completed a number of 160km rides with Murray, including winning the 2005 160km North Island Championship at Waimeha before being sold to the United Arab Emirates. Glenmore Hercules won the 120km Sheikh Maktoum Challenge in 2006 in a record time of 4:51:08. He was still racing 120km at 20kph as an 18 year old horse, earning his retirement as a schoolmaster in a riding school. The full brother of Glenmore Hercules – Four Winds Hannigan – competed successfully in dressage at an international level in Malaysia.
3
Glenmore Adonis (Porter Rhodes x A’Fak) was a striking chestnut Anglo gelding whom Andrea rode to CEI3* 160km level in endurance. Another rangy bay gelding with Murray aboard, Glenmore Toy Boy (Toy x Sugar N Spice) won the 2009 North Island CEI3* Championships and placed in the National Championships before being sold overseas. Ridden by Georgia, Glenmore Astroid (Summit Park Sultan (AU) x A’Fak) placed 41st and contributed to the New Zealand team placing 6th at the CEI4* Junior World Endurance Championships in 2011 in Abu Dhabi.
Murray and Andrea also leased Four Winds Tayr’s dam, Trinket (Erhard x Tinkabelle), who was joined by her full sister A’Fak. In 1995 Four Winds Bint Nalani (Royal Gold Treasure (AU) x Waimeha Nalani) and her daughter Four Winds N’Zahli (Dunwingeri Kahlil (AU) x Four Winds Bint Nalani) joined the growing broodmare group as a result of the dispersal of the Four Winds Stud. These mares were crossed with Royal Gold Treasure (AU) or other stallions as appropriate. Porter Rhodes was a TB stallion stood by show jumping identity Fred Cornege. Toy was an unregistered Arab x Standardbred stallion owned by Lou Cadwallader. Other mares were also used – Winter Cherry was a TB x Hanoverian by Witzbold. The original broodmare group was joined by the Anglo mare Nijinsky (by Waimeha Tarka). Also known as Sugar N Spice, this mare competed in endurance with Andrea Mason, and contributed part-bred offspring in Glenmore Toy Boy, Glenmore Moccona, and Glenmore Vixen. The homebred mare Glenmore Anna (Sheffield x A’Fak) was injured so has also joined the mare group. Glenmore progeny started to be noticed in eventing - Glenmore Waseem (Royal Gold Treasure (AU) x Winter Cherry) - and also in endurance. Glenmore Tahrif (Royal Gold Treasure (AU) x Trinket) ridden by Marie Wakeling, won the only endurance ride ever held in New Zealand for prize money.
14
In 2004 three day eventing changed to a shorter format that favored warm blood breeds, but by this time Murray and Andrea had become ‘serious’ about endurance. Endurance in New Zealand had been aligned with the FEI qualification framework, enabling the development of horses to a known international standard, and making it possible to qualify for international events.

The purchase of the Anglo mare Aurora Australis (AU) (Chip Chase Desert Wind x New Blossom) in 2006 from Jacqueline Webby was followed by purebred sisters Starglen Bouquet (AU) (Arabian Lodge Boragh x Santarabia Fame) and Starglen Sensacion (AU), and Ejay Ngarla (AU) (Chip Chase Desert Wind x Santarabia Asfur). These three matrons cemented the Crabbet base and bought Sindh bloodlines into the stud. A’Fak passed away and was replaced in 2007 with Four Winds Azefa (Silver Imperial x Four Winds Azahra), purchased from Poukekewa Stud. By this stage, daughters Georgia and Brigitte were also competitive in endurance. Georgia was awarded the NZAHBS 2011 Brian Ross Young Achiever Award due to her success in endurance.
5 Andrea and Glenmore Tariq (Shalom La Ish (CA) x Four Winds Tayr) rewrote the performance standards for endurance in New Zealand. Together the pair won three CEI2* 120km events and three CEI3* 160km events – a North Island and two National Championship titles – and placed second in a third National Championship by a whisker. Glenmore Tariq’s times for his 160km events were all under 10 hours (Kuratau Nationals 2011 9:34:55; South Island Nationals 2012 9:46:37; Kuratau North Islands 2013 8:52:35, and Taupo Nationals 2013 9:23:14). The pair won the 2013 FEI Series and the 2013 FEI Championships Trophy. Glenmore Tariq successfully completed 3820km in New Zealand and holds the record for the fastest 160km North Island Championship (8:52:13). Glenmore Tariq entered the NZAHBS Roll of Merit in 2013 for Performance in Endurance. Andrea and Glenmore Tariq were selected to compete at the 2014 WEG CEI4* Endurance Championships in France, together with Georgia and Glenmore Vixen. Glenmore Vixen was bought home to continue competing and eventually to join the broodmare herd, but Glenmore Tariq was sadly sold to fund the trip. The standard set by Glenmore Tariq could perhaps be challenged by Georgia and Glenmore Vixen (Shalom La Ish (CA) x Nijinsky). This pair have won one CEI2* event and three CEI3* 160km events including a North Island title, and both a Junior and Senior National title. Like Glenmore Tariq, Glenmore Vixen also has completed her 160km events in less than 10 hours (Taupo Nationals 2013 9:23:24;
Taupo North Islands 2014 9:20:36; and Taupo Nationals 2015 9:13:27). Murray and Andrea never aspired to own a stallion, and now they have a number of them. In 2001 they leased the Straight Egyptian Shalom La Ish (CA) (Ibn Amoura x Shalom Ha Yonah). He was an old horse at this point, with a performance history in dressage, harness and western that was testament to his remarkably tractable temperament. Although not originally sought for his endurance genetics, Shalom La Ish (CA) has left an indelible imprint on the sport. His offspring include: National and North Island Champions Glenmore Tariq and Glenmore Vixen; South Island Champion and 2005 Distance Horse of the Year Bint La Ish. His dominance has continued with his grand get in the form of 2012 National Champion Mauku Mistique (Naaddel (AU) x Saqqara Qi Ish) and 2011 Distance Horse of the Year Mizraim Silver Gym (Jesmond Kamahl x Windy Meadows Mistral). There are a number of Shalom La Ish (CA) offspring yet to begin their endurance careers so his effect will be felt for many years to come.
6 in endurance such as Craig Royston Melba (El Ring of Fire x Craigroy Marni), Aurora Australis (AU), and eventually Glenmore Vixen, Glenmore Arabian Stud will continue to produce high performing endurance horses for years to come. New Zealand Arab Horse Breeders Society President Melanie Barker, with her partner, Ken McGrath, donated the NZAHBS High Points New Zealand Endurance Breeder Award with the aim of recognising and promoting the achievements of registered horses in endurance. Horses must be competing under their registered names, and the breeder must be a current member of the NZAHBS. Points are allocated per kilometre for all rides over 40km in each season. In the 2013-2014 endurance season, Glenmore Arabian Stud accumulated points with completions in endurance rides by Glenmore Tariq and Glenmore Vixen (Shalom La Ish (CA)), Glenmore Comet (Summit Park Sultan (AU)), Glenmore Titan and Glenmore Amber (Vigar Mushgani), and Glenmore Soprano (Night At The Opera (AU)).
The young three-quarter Egyptian stallion Vigar Mushgani (Mushgar (AU) x Waimeha Tania) was purchased from nearby Vigar Arabians in 2004 to complement the existing bloodlines. Summit Park Sultan (AU) (Grey Legend x Serenity) from Vigar Arabians was used also over the mare band for a short time. In 2010 the Crabbet stallion, Night At The Opera (AU) (Shadowy Night x Aida) moved in at Glenmore, bringing Aethion lines. With the addition of mares proven NZAHBS YEAR BOOK 2015

STALLION PROFILE
DIONE ERA (AU) (Eomar El Rohan ERA x Eagleridge Rain Dancer) Sharing a room at an AGM in Auckland for the NZAHBS, two breeders, Mandy Thomas and Barbara Poulter were discussing the beautiful Arabians at Eagleridge Arabians in Australia. As the conversation went on, a discussion also evolved about how both breeders would love a colt from Eagleridge to add another dimension to their breeding herds and bloodlines. The conversation also discussed possible costs associated with importing a world class colt and the subject of possible syndication, making it more affordable and allowing other breeders to share in the excitement. Once home from the AGM, Barbara contacted Jenni Ogden (co-owner of Eagleridge) and soon after, some DVD footage arrived with a selection of colts available. One particular colt stood out to Barbara. Mandy was sent the DVD, and the same colt stood out for Mandy as well. The decision was made, Dione ERA was the colt we had both chosen, so emails were sent to other breeders around New Zealand for the possibility of making up our syndicate.
18
Three other breeders signed up and within a short time, Dione was flying to Auckland. Dione was transported down to the South Island to live at Barbara's Masada Park Arabians farm for the next three months. Stepping off the truck and instantly
making himself at home, Barbara couldnt believe how beautiful, tall and friendly Dione was. For what seemed like ages, she stood watching him meander around the paddock thinking a dream had come true, she had a world class Eagleridge Arabian colt in her paddock. An Open Day was planned at Masada Park with showcasing Dione for his first public appearance the main attraction. He did not disappoint with a large crowd of people from all over the South Island turning up to meet him. Dione showed off his powerhouse movement, his rearing on command, then his flawless temperament with everyone taking the opportunity to pat him and see him up close and personal.
3 New Zealand National Champion award, plus numerous Champion and Reserve Champion awards, Classic Head and Trot awards and Liberty classes. All of this with the eldest progeny only turning four years this year. Dione also has progeny about to start their careers in endurance. Dione has a wonderful nature and is happy to oblige anyone handling him, he also loves the company of foals and loves chatting to them across the fence. Children are another love for him and he will stand for any amount of time in the paddock while young girls groom him. He is a real people's horse and loves company.
Dione was shown once in Australia for a Top Ten award at The Eastcoast Championships. Since arriving in New Zealand, Dione has won New Zealand National Champion Stallion and South Island Champion Stallion.
Dione is owned by Mandy Thomas (Paragon Arabians, Taranaki), Sue Drinnan (Kowhai Arabians, Auckland) and Barbara Poulter (Masada Park Arabians, Waimate). Dione travels from Waimate to Taranaki and back each breeding season and shows for him are fitted in if possible around this schedule. Dione stands at public stud, so if you are looking for height, type, conformation and movement, Dione stamps his foals with all these traits, not to mention a friendly sensible nature that is able to put on snort and blow for the showring with a click of the fingers.
Dione’s progeny have surpassed all of our expectations, with a handful of progeny on the ground and only three of these shown, so far they have won between them, two New Zealand National Champion awards, a North Island Champion award, a South Island Champion award, a Reserve New Zealand National Champion award, a Top
We love everything about Dione, what he is producing for us and outside breeders and look forward to some very fancy foals appearing this season from some very high class mares of all breeds and disciplines, but most of all, we love that a dream came true of being able to have an Eagleridge colt in our paddocks.

SOOLAI’MON (AU) (1995-2013) by Virginia Dean
My beloved Soolai’mon (AU) died at Queens’ Birthday weekend 2013. Devastated to find him lying cold in the paddock, his beautiful spirit gone, his kind eye lifeless, I knelt beside him and sobbed, unable to believe that he had gone at only 18 years of age, my only solace being he did not appear to have struggled before his death. Sooli was bred by Peter Hall at Fairview Stud, sired by the renown Amir el Shaklan from the top mare Silver Glint. A full brother to the sensational Australian National Champion mare Windella Silver Fascination, Soolai’mon was imported by Angela Rogers of Jameel Arabians, as a youngster and later sold to Robyn Barker to begin his career under saddle. Unfortunately Sooli suffered an injury during his education and was then sold on to Tanya and John Harrison of Silver Moon Arabians. I had for many years, cherished the memory of Soolai’mon (AU) at the National Championships where he was awarded Reserve National Champion Stallion. I still remember the thrill of watching him power towards me at full extension, his feet barely touching the ground, totally airborne. The sight sent shivers down my spine. After seeing him available for sale again, I spent weeks humming and haaing over his pedigree, taking on El Shaklan

lines was something totally foreign to my breeding programme but the familiarity of the Silver lines was something I could not resist and won me over in the end. Sooli settled in easily at Anazeh Arabians, and came to love the routine and being just over the fence from his girls. His calm attitude as he stepped off the truck after his long journey still makes me smile – I led him out into the paddocks and matriarch Dell Adorina, did her usual song and dance across the lane, roaring and striking out at this newcomer. Sooli merely glanced over at her and said ‘Yeah,.. whatever’ and put his head down and grazed. This was him all over, the most wonderful natured stallion you could ever wish for. I had great fun showing Sooli – he added Canterbury Arabian Horse Club Champion Stallion and South Island Champion Stallion to his already impressive list of show wins. He was Reserve New Zealand National Champion Stallion twice and thoroughly delighted spectators when shown in liberty classes. Sooli has sired some wonderful horses in New Zealand – from only a handful of progeny, half of them are show champions and the other half are successful endurance horses, some of which have been exported, a fantastic record from a small group.
For me, Soolai’mon (AU) left but one filly, the much cherished Anazeh’s Radiant Silver, from Dell Adorina. Radi is a moving machine, she leaves me with my mouth hanging when she really engages top gear and I can’t wait to ride her. I wish she would hurry up and stop growing – she is going to be tall and with her extravagant movement, I have high hopes for her under saddle. My vet desperately wants to own her and she has a string of other admirers although is as yet unshown. If only Sooli had left me more foals before his death but it wasn’t to be. In the year prior to his passing, he failed to get three of my mares in foal and in hindsight, I suspect there was something amiss which ultimately led to his demise. He was the outward picture of health when I lost him which made it all the worse. Rest in Peace my beautiful, beautiful boy, so loved by everyone who knew him.

ANAZEH’S AQABA (1992-2013) by Virginia Dean
Anazeh’s Aqaba, fondly known as ‘Jack’, was the first purebred sired by the then aged Basha Selim (Arabesque el Bekaa (AU) x Ramah (AU)). Jack’s dam was the successful multi-champion mare, Khalifa (Saracen Karim (CA) x Kareema (GB)). Basha Selim was an open show champion under saddle and I had the opportunity to lease him for a couple of seasons before he went to greener pastures. An elegant stallion, it is a pity he hadn’t been used earlier although he did sire some excellent derivatives. Basha Selim was a very elegant, big moving horse, irridescent chestnut with an impeccable nature and I was delighted with the chestnut colt he left me. Australian judge Sharyn Ruskey, during a visit to Anazeh Arabians, was pipped at the post by Basha Selim’s owners, Terry and Lorraine Crowhen, who had eagerly purchased Jack before weaning, keen to grow him on as his sire’s replacement. Sharyn had to content herself with rolls of

film and Jack was very obliging, showing off his lovely movement, all grace and curves. In due course, Jack made the move to Murchison with Terry and Lorraine and he grew into a beautiful horse. Caitlin Dalton (Riverchant Stud) then unofficially leased Jack for a time, and in her care, he sired Nahqidah (from Nah-Tricia) who was later exported to Dubai, as well as Cash, from an endurance mare. Anazeh’s Aqaba was also awarded Champion Arab at the Nelson Horse & Pony Breeders Show when shown by Caitlin. Sadly Jack suffered a serious injury to his hind hoof following an accident believed to have been caused by low flying helicopters. With Terry and Lorraine about to leave for Australia, Jack faced being put down until Caitlin contacted me and appraised me of the situation. So, Jack came home and I nursed him back to soundness. Unable to stand two stallions on my property as I had Anwar Sadat by then, Jack was sold
to Bev Hewson of the Jubilee Stud and from thence he was sold to Mary and Leo Brosnahan of Sunny Brae Stud where he spent the rest of his days. What an opportunity this proved for Jack. He was able to further prove his worth as a sire, leaving 18 registered progeny with the Sunny Brae prefix – 12 derivatives and 6 purebreds and I believe there are plenty of unregistered derivatives out there as well carrying his bloodlines. Mary fondly remembers Jack, he was loved by all for his kind nature and ability to stamp his stock. Sadly Jack was laid to rest in 2013 and is buried at Sunny Brae.
AURORA STUD by Robin Marshall
Aurora Stud was established in the early 1970’s in the deep south by Lyn Marshall, and the move into the Arabian world came with the purchase of a Purebred Arabian, Dellmount Phaeton, bought as a yearling from long-time Southland breeder Brian Ross. As well as being ridden in a variety of disciplines, this Crabbet-Colonial stallion was bred to many types of mares to produce good performing horses and ponies. He was also used for a time at Rainbow Stud, which is well known for its coloured showjumpers and eventers. Sadly, he died at the young age of 19. Fast forward to the mid 2000’s, when Lyn brought Pure Crabbet blood into the stud. After importing Fenwick Regenta (AU) and Silver Omen (AU) from Australia in 2006, Lyn added another in-foal mare, Silver Crescent (AU) to the Aurora herd. The resulting Pure Crabbet progeny from these three now numbers seven, with the oldest three mares working their way up the grades in Endurance. A further two younger Pure Crabbets have just been started under saddle and will be out in the new season. Lyn has also added an outcross line to the stud, with a yearling colt from Silver Crescent by the Polish Arabian sire Pilot. PARAGON ARABIANS by Mandy Thomas
Paragon Royal Bazar (Baz as he was known here or Boy by his new owner) by the Riding Pony stallion Hopefield Royal Rebel and out of my purebred Arabian mare Arabil Azar (Arabil Azeem (IIU) x Brantia Park Qasar) was exported to the UK in April this year. With his 18 year old owner Kevin Egging he will compete on the British circuit at competitive mounted games. Here in New Zealand he achieved the following titles all achieved at competitive mounted games with Kevin: Open National Pairs Champions at HOY 2014, was a member of the Reserve Champion Team at New Zealand Open National Team Championships at HOY 2014, also Reserve New Zealand open individual Champion in 2014. His previous owner won the Senior Open Mounted Games at HOY 2013. He was a much sought after pony here in NZ, with one person telling me that he was one of the fastest ponies in NZ at mounted games. Baz also achieved NZ National Top 5 Derivative Gelding 2011, numerous first placings and championships at A&P shows and A class Arabian shows, competed at show jumping, ODE’s and also was calm enough to help out at the Riding for the Disabled. His Sire is still going strong here in Eltham, Taranaki at Brechinridge Stud with Michelle Taylor. Alas, I lost Arabil Azar to colic a few weeks ago and she was in foal to Dione ERA, such a loss of bloodlines as she had a lot of Ansata in her background and a cross to Simeon Samuel. I have two of her daughters here. My 12 year old daughter Tamsyn is doing so well at Pony Club, this being her first season. She is riding my purebred mare Paragon Ayisha Saar by Willowvale Saarfari and out of my mare Cyden Hannah. They have been a team for only about 16 months now and have come a long way together to get where they are now. Tamsyn recently competed in a Mini Teams ODE where
she came first overall in the 40cm group with a high score at dressage (judged by Claudia Hurley who gained 6th place in the world for dressage) and clear rounds in show jumping and cross country. Tamsyn and Ayisha came away from the end of season Gymkhana with 4 trophies. They have so much fun together, its wonderful to see. Tamsyn is now doing training for Show Hunter for the Winter season. There are now two purebreds and a part-bred Arabian at our Pony Club so go the Arabs! We have to nurture these young riders. Tamsyn already has her eye on taking over the stud when I’m older!! We are looking forward to our one foal due this season by Willowvale Saarfari out of Cyden Hannah. Our foals out of Hannah are very precious as she is turning 21 this year and this will be her 9th foal for me. The majority of Hannah’s foals have been Champions/Reserves at A class shows, National Top 5’s and a National Champion Filly (by Jacob JCA (US)). The rising 3 year old gelding, Waseem PA by Dione ERA (AU) out of Paragon Ayisha Saar, is growing like a bean at Murumuru Farms with Ashley Cole. He is a very tall boy (15.1hh at 2 years old) with good bone and Ashley is very pleased with how he is growing. He has been started under saddle and has taken to it so calmly. He has such a lovely nature which comes from his Sire and Dam. Paragon Arabians Inglewood, Taranaki P: +64 6 756 8005 E: mandy.thomas@xtra.co.nz

This season has been a busy one for the stud. We had two lovely new fillies born - Essence of Arwen (CRA Sihr Shahrif (US) x SS Shula) is a very pretty chestnut, bred/owned in partnership with Carmen Tuite of Talitha Arabians. Yanah Bint Shaheen (Shaheen Al Saba (AU) x Euralea Fire N Desire) is a special grey bred/owned in partnership with Lee Cox of Euralea Arabians. She was shown at the South Island Championships for Reserve Champion Filly at her dam’s side.

Our eldest Shaheen Al Saba (AU) daughters, Sharifa DH and Fiera DH (born 2013) have been sold, although they were not officially for sale! Sharifa DH is now with Sandy Stanway and Tony Aitken of Classic Arabians. Sandy and Tony also have a mare in foal to Shaheen and we are all excited to meet this new addition to the family. Fiera DH was shown three times, taking away Champion Arabian at the Northern (Rangiora) A&P Show, Reserve Champion Junior Filly/Colt at the North Island Arabian Championships, and National Reserve Champion Junior Filly. Fiera has been sold to Lin Lang of China, which is both sad and exciting. Fairview Shakla’s Shania (AU) (multi-champion in hand and under saddle) is our only mare due to foal this Spring. One foal will be nice and relaxing, but we plan to make up for it, with a few more babies planned for the following season! It is always nice to hear about horses we have bred and sold, especially those that have been gone for a few years. Airborne DH is now with breeder Anne Sparks; Soleil DH has had some extra schooling under saddle, and has been sold on within the North Island; Sanaa DH is now in Nelson with a teenage rider; while young Destino DH is still charming his new owner in Southland.

LAWRENCE ARABIANS by Karan Lawrence
With half the year behind us and the shortest day only three weeks away, it is time to look forward to spring. While spring heralds warmer weather, it also brings new foals this year. A very special purebred foal is expected from Anazeh’s Indian Silver (Anwar Sadat x Dellmount Leala) by Zibaq Khan, and we are very excited, to be expecting two foals by Pevensey Regent (AU) (Arfaja Rococo x Pevensey Baybe). Regent’s foals will be his first, so needless to say I and his owner and breeder, Leon Bennett, are anxious to see what Regent produces. The ladies in waiting are Sunny Brae Jasmine (Czarak x Dellmount Jamil) who has produced two lovely geldings for us by Zibaq Khan, and Zareth-Shahar (Quassa x Zhola). Zareth-Shahar will be producing her first foal. This foal will be the first of the third generation of Lawrence breeding. Earlier in the year I started “Zari” under saddle. At eight years of age she took to being a riding horse calmly, never giving me a moments worry.
I have come to believe that I have a soft spot for small grey mares. A visit to Holly Farm in May resulted in an opportunity for the stud to incorporate some very special bloodlines. A grey mare by Madreya (AU) (Simeon Stav x MB Madirah) and out of Nha’dia (Simeon Sapar (AU) x Naazariah) was offered to me and after meeting her and watching her move, I decided that Ma’dia Al Isis would look at home at our place. Her inclusion in our program does not mean a change of direction, but rather, an added dimension to our program. So, it has been a big year for our small stud and it’s not spring yet. ANAZEH ARABIANS by Virginia Dean
I am pleased to welcome a new addition to the stud in the form of RR Indian Reign of Fire. This lovely chestnut mare is by El Indian Firegold from Dell Royal Silver. I have long wanted to introduce some Indian Fire Dance blood into the stud and when Reign became available, I saw my chance. She has 95% Crabbet lines and is related to all my other girls, sharing the same tail female as Anazeh’s Indian Silver. Reign has settled in nicely and shares the paddock with India, my two “Indians” together! I have partially backed her and hope to be riding her over summer unless I decide to breed from her this season. Anazeh’s Indian Silver made the trip down to Lawrence Arabians late last year and I am thrilled that she has a positive scan to Zibaq Khan. I can’t wait for the foal, due around Christmas. Anazeh’s Radiant Silver, my Soolai’mon filly out of Dell Adorina, is rising four now but still way off finishing growing with her rump about 3” higher than her front. She is going to be a very big girl and I feel like a midget standing beside her. I just want to get on and ride her with her fabulous movement, but with gaps still in her knees, I have to be patient... and we have to be content with messing about in the pen, walking over pallets and poles and some gentle lungeing now and then. She is very placid in temperament, just like her sire and dam, so easy to work with. Dell Adorina is looking great at 26 and we still go for the odd tootle round the block. Last time I rode her, a power pole caught fire just as we were going underneath, I think it was the biggest shy she has ever done in her life and who would blame her!
I am hoping to put Anazeh’s Aziza al Sadat in foal this season but will have to work hard at not letting her get too fat in the meantime. I have hardly fed any hay out this winter, I have so much grass and already it is growing like mad – I know, because I am mowing the lawn every weekend and its only July ... On a sad note, I have lost my beautiful and special Gloria (Anazeh’s Glorious Silver), the delayed result of a bad accident we had back in January. I had waved an oncoming speeding tractor to slow down which he chose to ignore and Gloria and I ended up toppling backwards into a very deep and narrow roadside ditch. Somehow we both survived, cut to shreds from blackberry thorns and we staggered home. However, shortly before Queen’s Birthday Gloria began to display signs of liver failure which the vet attributed to internal injuries sustained during the fall. Unfortunately her symptoms did not manifest until it was too late and despite infusions and other attempts to save her life, my darling horse spiralled down uncontrollably. Her end was horrendous and something I will never be able to wipe from my mind. I still can’t accept that I will never see her again, nor hear her welcoming calls. She may have been small in stature but had the biggest heart and personality and I will love her forever. RAYJAN ARABIANS by Jan Wilson
Rayjan Arabians have never followed fashion or fads when selecting breeding stock and although we have enjoyed a good share of winnings in the show ring, we have never bred or selected with that specific purpose in mind.
offspring were beautiful, athletic, trainable and confident. They had great minds and never took a step back. The show ring rock star of this family is multi champion Rayjan Heath, he managed three National Titles at one National Show.
The route we have taken is to produce a good balanced horse, one which looks good and has good conformation and a trainable mind, a horse to be ridden. An Arabian horseman I know once said “breed them pretty and ride them right!” - something we have tried to do.
Having retained some exceptional mares from this cross it was then time to look for a new stallion to complement them. We found such a horse in Idaho, USA, CRA Sihr Shahrif (US) sired by the much decorated Enzo (Padrons Pysche x RD Bey Shahmpane) out of the Fame VF daughter Fame Magic VF. He is leaving some awesome progeny, they are a consistent type, have great natures and are excellent to train. Already he has a number of National Champions to his credit, including Rayjan Jumana, Rayjan Khandi, DTA Extreem Envy, Aspen Hills Firebird to name just a few. Wairoa Audacious Lady ex Rayjan Danika was a Supreme Champion and Rayjan Khandi was a Champion Filly at the Auckland Spectacular. His son Rayjan Aiden ex Rayjan Hollee is doing well in the endurance discipline.
Our foundation mare was Bremervale Tequila (AU) sired by the Spanish bred Destinado. She produced 10 foals for us, most were excellent riding horses and all had great temperaments. Other mares followed but none really suited the ideal of what we wanted to breed and most were sold on. The game changer came when we purchased the Rave VF filly Bremervale Shalimar (AU). Again she had the Spanish blood, her dam being Bremervale Spanish Princess. Shalimar gave us 10 foals over 10 years, all were sired by Bremervale Pocohontas (AU) (Desperado x Bremervale Decena). These two “set the bar,” their
National Champion Rayjan Heiress and they are what I term “dream mares”. Both are relatively young and each have produced a National Champion daughter, and their progeny that have been broken to saddle are “gems”. What more could you ask for? We have been incredibly lucky to have had two great sires and some amazing mares to fulfil our goals. Rayjan Arabians Mosgiel, Otago P: +64 3 489 6595 E: rayandjanw@kinect.co.nz

BYZANCE ACTION HORSES by Anne Marie Garcia
In 2012 I imported the purebred Arab stallion Savionne ERA from Australia. “Savionne” is by Afrikah ERA, an incredible stallion with semen exported all over the wold. Savionne has siblings in Europe, USA and the Middle East. His dam is the top show producing mare River Oak Heart’s On Fire, a top show class winner herself. Savionne is a gorgeous boy with a kind temperament. He has had three crops of foals to date, purebred and partbred Arabians, stamping his foals with gorgeous heads and beautiful Arabian type. The stud imported a very special stallion from the USA in January 2014, Double Shot O’Champagne. “Champ” is a homozygous champagne American Saddlebred. All his babies are guaranteed to be champagne, a new and striking colour now available in New Zealand. The cross between an American Saddlebred and Arabian is called a “National Show Horse”, a breed that excels in showjumping, eventing, dressage and endurance. Purebred mare, Byzance Majidah (Unbelievable ERA (AU) x Onewerre Dawn Breaker) produced the first champagne National Show Horse for New Zealand last season – a stunning filly.

Jenny Champion and Shane Dougan of Tararua Arabians see value in using CTR competitions to develop horses for endurance. In his final season before competing at WEG in 2006 in Aachen, the stallion Vigar Riffal was unbeaten but once in an entire season of CTR competitions. His progeny continue with Tararua Yarah (Vigar Riffal x Aspen-Hills Whistle at Me) placing second in the North Island CTR Intermediate Championship. Tararua Amber (Lexington Tequila (AU) x CK White Cloud) placed fourth in the same event. Prettty purebred black mare Saamen Silhouette (Sharabi x Arabil Marja) mixes endurance with CTR to place fourth in the North Island CTR Open Championship and clocked up 190 kilometres in CTR with a number of riders over the season to finish the season third in the CTR Open Distance Horse of the Year Award. Mystica Bandito (AU) (Focus On Me FA x Fairview Shaklas Infatuation) also juggled CTR and endurance with Frank Aldridge, to placed third in the North Island CTR Open Championship and fourth in the CTR Open Horse and Rider Points Series.

REGISTERED ARABIANS
inCompetitive Trail Riding by Hilary Webb
It is not surprising that registered Arabian horses dominate the discipline of Competitive Trail Riding (CTR) in both numbers and results. What is surprising is the diversity of bloodlines. CTR is to endurance as the discipline of show hunter is to show jumping – a less challenging in distance, yet more technical version of endurance - where riders must complete a course as close to the time allowed as possible, with heart rates as low as possible. Affiliated CTR – where clubs and competitions are affiliated to ESNZ – features about 90% Arabians. ESNZ registered horses and riders may contest Island and National Championships and accumulate scores for National Points and Distance Awards. At National level, registered purebred Arabians were represented in CTR by AA Fancy Lady (Bold Fyre (US) x AA Gailady), ridden by veteran Arabian breeder Sue Drinnan of Kowhai Arabians. This combination placed fourth in the National CTR Championship at Taupo at Easter.
36
Puketoi Shaffal – bred, developed and ridden by Eunice Algie, ruled ESNZ affiliated competition at National level
this season. The purebred grey mare (Vigar Riffal x Puketoi Sharna) is a grand daughter of the Crabbett stallion Sharabi, whom Eunice competed in endurance. Eunice and Puketoi Shaffal won the South Island CTR Open Championship, placed second in the North Island CTR Open Championship, and despite a paddock injury putting an early end to their season, finished the season as winners of the CTR Open Horse and Rider Points Series and CTR Open Distance Horse of the Year Award. To prove her versatility, Puketoi Shaffal also won the Alfredton Shephards’ Race against a strong field. Many combinations compete in both endurance and CTR, using CTR competitions to develop young horses and as training for endurance. One such example is North Island CTR Open Championship (and North Island CEI3*160km Championship) winner Barack Obama. Barack Obama is a partbred gelding bred by Cath Batchelor, also by Sharabi, out of a TB mare called Sunrise. He was registered under the name Summer Storm and shown for a win in the North Island Champion Derivative Gelding class at the Taranaki All Breeds show in 2004. Barack Obama is owned by Mark Round and ridden by Jenny Champion.
Wairarapa CTR stalwarts Jane Ferguson and Sue Smith both ride registered purebred Arabians - Daagir (Naaddel x Latarah el Sadir) and Taurere Dyani (Ngapa Tani x Taurere Sundyna) and have had a very successful season this year. Daagir placed third in the Intermediate CTR Horse and Rider Points Series, and Taurere Dyani fourth. Daagir placed fourth in the Intermediate Distance Horse Series, followed again by Taurere Dyani. Wellington Area Trail Riding Club is no longer affiliated to ESNZ, and as the name suggests, features regional competition in the lower North Island. The fields comprise of a mix of breeds, but registered purebreds and part-breds feature in the results. Also out of Arabil Marja, but sired by Vigar Riffal, Tararua Mistalight and her jockey Emma Mason owned the Junior division of unaffiliated CTR competition for many years of WATRC competition. This season Emma Horse (as she is known at home) was partnered with sister Kelly Mason for CTR while Emma (rider) climbed on for endurance rides.

A similar system worked for the imported purebred gelding Mystica Mossimo (AU) (Focus On Me FA x Fairview Shaklas Infatuation) where mum Jacqui Mason was allowed to ride CTR, but Emma reclaimed him for the big events. Both Tina Plastow and Lynda Kessel ride KD horses – notably KD Migal (El Kheir Galal x Karamea Mira) and KD Filah (Riblah x Lark Fire Bird) – in WATRC competition and endurance. Mizraim Silver Gym (Jesmond Kamahl x Windy Meadows Mistral) also balances CTR and endurance but still manages to dominate WATRC Open competition. Moroccan Arabians also support WATRC competition – this year with Morrocan Amira (Khouros (AU) x AA Amberley), Glendaar Sadeek (Fire Spirit x Glendaar Fire Maid) and Saafari Shareef (Willowvale Saarfari x Four Winds Jamila). Gabrielle Deuss was a great supporter of WATRC and Aspen-Hills horses continue to feature in WATRC events. Gabrielle rode the entire Aspen-Hills Elegy (Shalom La Ish (CA) x Racca), a horse noted for his kind temperament, in CTR. AspenHills Balalaika (E’Arlia Jairim (AU) x Bint Breeze) won the 2012 WATRC Open Championships with Aimee Merrick, placed third in the 2015 North Island CTR Intermediate Championship with Pip Ireland, and won or placed in a number of unaffiliated events with junior riders.
Aspen-Hills Loop The Loop (Four Winds Azahi x Aspen-Hills Concord) with Anna Graham won the WATRC Open Championships in both 2014 and 2015. The pair had a phenomenal season in open competition and finished the season by winning the inaugural PukeokaHu Man vs Horse Distance Race over a tough hill country course. In addition to riding to time, being successful in CTR is achieved with a horse with low heart rates, or at least a heart rate that drops quickly when the horse stops moving. The heart rates are taken for a full minute with a stethoscope soon after horse and rider cross the finish line. Riders then have up to 30 minutes to present their horse for a second heart rate reading. Time penalties (1 for every minute or part thereof over time, and 2 for every minute under time) are added to both heart rates to give a final score. In the past, anything under 100 was regarded as a good score. These days, winning scores can range from 75 to 95 depending on how tough the course was and how hot the day is. Low heart rates are part-horsemanship, part conditioning, and part genetic. South Island partbred mare Stonelea Sparkling Rose (Whitestones Crystal Spark x Ashmore Winemaker Heaven) placed third in the CTR Open Horse and Rider Points Series and fourth in the CTR Open Distance Horse of the Year Award. was unbeaten in five Open CTR events this season and achieved the incredibly low scores of 67 and 68. The specialist CTR rider Anglea Ibbotson has replaced her very successful TB mare, Sky Pilot, with a young Arab. Although still being developed Sherwood Valdez (River Oak Colorado (AU) x Faraway Ve’era (AU)) improved hugely in his first season to finish sixth in the Intermediate Distance Series. Other CTR specialists include registered part-bred Karawara Girrinbai (Vigar Riffal x Little Okwhan) who won the 2014 WATRC Open 50km Long Distance Championships run over the tough Battle Hill course. Another registered part-bred Willowvale Monet (Ralvon Courage (AU) x Amber) won the 2014 WATRC Intermediate Championship event. The purebred mare Kedar Sarita (Aranui Double Band x Tahira Salsa) is doing well in WATRC competition with Jeanette Rogers. The Anglo gelding Tararua Kruger (Vigar Riffal x Our Big Bertha) has been a veteran WATRC competitor with Karen Spears. CTR is a useful option for breeders to sell into. Those horses that don’t fit the parameters for sale into the endurance market will have long, productive lives competing in New Zealand. What better way to get your brand out there - promoting both your stud and the Arabian breed.

TRYPHENA CARTER
New Zealand Rural Ambassador 2016 The finals of the New Zealand Rural Ambassador Award were held at the annual Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) Conference in Hawkes Bay at the end of June 2015. Run under the auspices of the RAS and New Zealand Young Farmers, the Award recognises excellence and is offered annually to young people, under the age of 30 years, who are involved in the A&P Show movement in some way. Following a rigorous application process entrants are initially judged within their region, and the regional winners become finalists for the national award. Tryphena Carter from Riversdale, the Southern District Winner, squared off against three other finalists for the 2016 Award – Georgia Davies from North Canterbury representing Central, Zach Mounsey from Otorohanga representing Mid Northern and Ben Burgess from Whangarei representing Northern. Each finalist was interviewed by a panel of judges before speaking at the RAS Conference Dinner on the set topic “What is New Zealand’s public perception of farming and how can we change it?” The evening culminated in Tryphena being named the 2016 New Zealand Rural Ambassador. As part of the award title Tryphena will undertake ambassadorial duties at key events such as the RAS Conference, Royal A&P shows/events and local shows. Tryphena will also represent the RAS of New Zealand in the Australasian Competition to be held in Tasmania in 2016. 1 2 3 4

Tryphena grew up on a cropping farm in Rakaia. After studying at Lincoln University, she took up a position as Graduate Valuer at the Gore office of valuation firm TelferYoung in 2013 and is in her last year before applying for registration.

Tryphena’s interests and accomplishments are wide and varied ranging from showing and competing at A&P shows; competitive ploughing, an interest she shares with her father, Gordon; a Committee member of the Gore A&P Association; a RAS Equestrian Judge; and Arabian horse enthusiast. Tryphena has been involved with the Arabian horse for all of her 28 years through a shared love of the breed with her mother, Helena Patchett-Carter. Together Tryphena and Helena own the Cashmere Park Arabian Stud which Helena established in 1972. Tryphena says “growing up I had a range of ponies starting with mainly Welsh, but the most memorable was an Anglo Arab pony Gillyflower (Iliad by Othello x Beleek TB), whereas I did everything on from showing, pony club, one day eventing - my once in a lifetime pony. I then went onto other Part and Purebred Arabs. Presently my main hack is a Partbred Arab - Chelsea Giltedge (Lovelace of Africa x Chelsea Fiesta). Although Mum and I still have a love of Arabs (we are expecting two Purebred foals this season), we have also moved onto breeding Welsh. Mum currently stands a Section A stallion, Brecondale Santini and we have a couple of Section C and D Cobs which we are breeding from”.

NZ National ArabianChampionships 2015 hosted by the Auckland Arabian Horse Club Judge: Lewis McKim, Canada
The 2015 New Zealand Arabian Horse National Championships I would first like to thank the Arabian Horse Society of New Zealand for inviting me to officiate as judge at the 2015 National Championships. It was both an honor and a privilege. The show venue was truly world class and I thoroughly enjoyed the private tour of the inner main buildings at the conclusion of the show. I must congratulate the show committee for their dedication, professionalism, commitment and passion for hosting such a successful show. It is always difficult to conduct a show of this importance and calibre. To have such a show committee, the New Zealand Arabian breeders, owners and enthusiasts are most fortunate. I applaud the entire show committee on a job exceedingly well done! I felt that the exhibitors were very courteous and had their horses turned out and presented beautifully. There was a great deal of quality in all of the classes both in hand and ridden. I believe that any of the National Champions in both halter and under saddle would be globally competitive. I am most appreciative and grateful in the way I was received. I had a wonderful time and left the show with many fond and everlasting memories. I wish you all the very best of everything in the future. Once again, thank you for allowing me the opportunity of judging such fine Arabian and Derivative Arabian Horses. Kindest Regards Lewis McKim

SG STUD Here at SG Stud we have been very, VERY busy. The first season of opening our facility up for doing Artificial Insemination was a huge success which saw us needing to lease another 20 acres in order to accommodate all the mares we had over the season and saw us hiring a full time staff member to help with the extra workload. We inseminated almost 80 mares last season and our first cycle conception rates were brilliant with a 90% success rate of getting mares in foal and holding their pregnancy to 42 days. Of the 10% that we missed first cycle, or didn’t hold up to the 42 days, we had a success rate of 96% getting them in foal and holding until the 42 days on the second cycle. We believe our high percentage success rate lies in being able to offer a boutique environment to keep pressure and stress levels to a minimum which ensures optimum health and reproduction capabilities. This coming season, we are looking to also be able to offer clients the option to do frozen semen inseminations. We are able to work in conjunction with either Equibreed or Matamata Vets (depending on which facility the semen is stored at) or we can now offer (in conjunction with Cambridge Equine Hospital and our fantastic Vet Babiche Heil) the option of having it done at the veterinary clinic. The mares would agist at either of SG Stud’s two properties and be prepped for a stay at Equibreed, Matamata Vets or Cambridge Equine Clinic to enable them to have regular scans around the clock to ensure optimum time for insemination. Once insemination has been done, the mare will be returned to us. If you are interested in the option of either chilled or frozen AI for your mare, please get in contact with Colette to discuss options. We were fully booked with foaling down mares last season, and we saw a range of happy healthy foals being born and had two emergency call outs. One for an upside down presentation which saw Colette manage to turn the foal and extract the head from being left behind all before the vet arrived. Both mare and foal were fine. The second call out resulted in both the loss of the mare and foal due to intestine rupture going into labour. All attempts were made to save the foal, but it was unfortunately not able to be saved. We are almost fully booked for the 2015/2016 season so if you would like your mare to be foaled down by us please do get in contact as spaces go very quickly.
This season also saw us take a new direction in that we now accept and take on outside stallions to promote, manage and do AI collection or live serve with. This enables stallions that are not able to have many mares (due to either owner commitments/ time restraints, issues with access to a collection facility or unable to take mares onto their own property) a chance to have access to a wide range of mares around the country as well as ones that agist at SG Stud for insemination. We were kept extremely busy with collecting from at least two to three stallions per day and shipping the semen around the country as well as inseminating mares directly that were on site. We have boosted a lot of the stallion’s fertility from management techniques and feeding regimes and are so far booked for three outside stallions to be stationed here this coming season. If you are interested we offer very competitive packages from complete management of advertising and dealing with all enquiries direct, to just walk in, walk out collections. Our boys did well last season with Aspen Hills Shell Fire (AU) (Redwood Lodge Firewalker (AU) x Sunnybank Anashelle) having exceptional fertility and everything on the farm and through shipped semen got in foal first cycle. We cannot wait to see the babies that will be born this season. He is proving to be a fantastic sire leaving very desirable traits of a good working temperament and that all important ‘look at me factor’. The past season also saw Aspen Hills Shell Fire (AU) do his first few endurance starts. In this new discipline he has already gained a large following due to his very laid back and happy go lucky nature and shown he has a natural ability to keep up with the best of them. He has had fantastic heart rates and we are very excited to see how he will progress as he loves getting out and about and we are hoping to continue once his rider comes back into the area. Along with doing endurance, Colette also rode him at a few A&P shows in the Park Hack section as well as in some Arabian sections. Time commitments meant that we were not able to attend as many shows as we would have liked, but the future is looking very promising. Orlando (Redwood Lodge Firewalker (AU) x Aratahnes Elequence (AU)) had one mare last season but his big learning was to collect for AI. We have not bred more with him at present due to wanting to focus more on slowly breaking him in to hopefully
take out and about to some shows this season. Slight hind leg lameness from some paddock silliness after the rain saw him unable to make his debut appearance with us at the Nationals, but look out for him this coming season. He is shaping up to be a very well balanced and gentle soul and Colette cannot wait to ride him. In between all of this we did manage to attend a few shows with our youngstock star Parkland’s Playgirl (Fairview Kubla Khan (AU) x Mahogany Ice Delight) who has been competing in Show Pony, Arabian and Golden Horse sections at A&P shows always coming home with a wide ribbon so we are very happy with how she is progressing. Carousel Dream’s Maestro (Orlando x Goldenwood Misty Maiden) came to live with us after his dam tragically passed away when he was only 11 weeks of age. We quickly prepped and took him to the Pony Breeders Foal Show that saw him take out the Champion Arabian garland in the Pony Ring. For Orlando’s first foal we are very pleased with the results and look forward to campaigning him on behalf of his owner this coming season. We wish everyone the best for the 2015/ 2016 season. ARAHIARABIANS
Arahi Arabians • Current Broodmares We breed Arabians for our family to ride, show and enjoy so we aim to breed “user friendly horses”. We consider trainability, conformation, attitude, temperament and movement to be top priorities and feel we are well on track after 30 plus years of a breeding plan. Our current emphasis is on endurance but we have in the past been involved in showing, pony club, showjumping and eventing, and our horses are all-round performers and also really enjoy jumping.
Cyden Kay (Cyden Sun x Killibinbin Lila (AU)) 18yo, 14.3hh Purebred 3* Endurance mare with numerous wins & placings at top level including 2nd NZ National Championship 160km 3* 2008. Super 2014 colt Arahi Sterling (pending) by Arahi Supremo. Top performing, big moving mare who has clicked extra well with Arahi Supremo.

(Ranaarb (AU) x Arahi Amalaa) (SOD Waimeha Eclipse) 15hh Purebred 3* Endurance mare with top 10 placings at NZ National Championships 160km 3* 2011 & 2012. Well performed mare with a lot of character and a big personality. Sarah King ©
our stallion •
Arahi Supremo (Waimeha Mandate x Arahi Amiria) (SOD Puketahu Mazada) Waimeha Mandate is the legend in Australasian Endurance having completed a staggering 9000km. We consider our standout broodmare to date has been Arahi Amiria (dec). Our stallion has 3 older full brothers & sisters who have given uncountable hours of pleasure in the saddle to our whole family & we breed from this stallion with confidence knowing his bloodlines well. Stud Fee $1500.
Arahi Aria (Ranaarb (AU) x Arahi Alia) (SOD Waimeha Eclipse) 15.2hh Purebred Mare Due to injury could not take part in endurance. Shown lightly inhand for Champion and Reserve placings. Top class mare who is really proving her worth as a broodmare.

Arahi N’Zhali (Arahi Supremo x Four Winds N’Zhali) We sadly lost the mare Four Winds N’Zhali a couple of hours after foaling October 2014 and hand reared her filly foal Arahi N’Zhali. Arahi Ahmajaa offered a helping hand in this process…her kindness and understanding blew us all away!!! 1st photo is orphan foal in the float (milk container inside) & Arahi Ahmajaa standing guard. Note tape across the float to stop the mare going inside. 2nd photo after safe delivery of her own foal she happily played mum to both babies and though she never needed to feed the orphan foal she cared for it in every other way (Arahi N’Zhali closest to camera).
