DANIELLE CHAMBERS

Brian Ross Young Achiever Award 2016

Jane Thompson ©

Team Dani and Zakee was formed three years ago, when Dani was 11 and Zakee rising 5. Dani’s mother Helen had started two young purebred geldings under saddle and realised that Rosewood Zakee (Redwood Lodge Calais (AU) x Zelina) had the temperament needed for Dani to take on as her first baby pony. Dani learnt the basics of starting a young horse, and was first on his back, and first to walk and trot him round the yard, the start of many firsts for both of them. At this point Zakee went to Jeff Hill to finish the job, and Helen then rode him for the first few months to get his flat work established. After Zakee’s first dressage competition, where he placed 4th in his first test, Dani took over and they haven’t looked back. Dani taught Zakee to jump and within a month had taken him to Roydvale Pony Club to their first jumping competition, where they placed 4th overall and 1st for best style in their first class, 25cm. Over the next two years they have gone from this to competing at level two dressage, 95cm one day eventing and 1.05m show-jumping, as well as representing their pony club and high school in all three disciplines. Their highlights over the last two years competing include:

6

• New Zealand National Arabian Championships 2014 - Hi-Point Youth Award winner. • Spring Into Action show 2014 dressage 1st test 1A, 2nd test 1B, 4th showhunter pony 60cm, 4th pony show-jumping 80cm and 5th pony show-jumping 70cm. • Courtenay A&P show 2014 - champion led purebred, reserve champion ridden Arabian, 1st Arabian Costume and judges choice award. • Okuku Pony Club end of year prizegiving 2014 - award for Best Pony Club Combination. • Selection for the Eyreton Pony Club Show-jumping Team to contest the 2015 South Island Pony Club’s showjumping championships in Waimate (her own Pony Club didn’t have the riders to make up a team) at 85cm where they had a live score in every round to help their team to 11th place overall. • Waihora Pony Club ODE May 2015 competing at 80cm, 2nd after dressage and double clear to win. • Rangiora Pony Club ODE May 2015 80cm, 1st after dressage, 4th overall. • Okuku Pony Club ODE - 80cm, 7th dressage and double clear for 3rd overall.

• Roydvale Pony Club ODE - 80cm, 5th dressage and double clear for 3rd overall. • Selected for Okuku A Team to compete at the Amberley Cup Dressage Competition, where they gained the highest score for their age group and helped the team to 1st place and the cup. • Selection for the Okuku Springston Trophy Team at 80cm where they finished on their dressage score in 10th place to help the team win 10th overall and the Horse Mastership Award. • Kaiapoi Pony Club show-jumping competition - 1st 1.0m gamblers stakes (1.10m joker cleared beautifully), 3rd 1.0m Tam5. • Rangiora A&P show - 1st Arabian Costume and 1st District Pony Hunter over jumps, show-jumping 2nd, 85cm IJO, 3rd 85cm speed round, 4th 1.0m Tam5. • Oxford Pony Club ODE - 95cm, 5th dressage and 6th overall. • Okuku Pony Club end of year prizegiving 2015 - Rider of the Year trophy. • New Zealand National Championships 2016 - New Zealand National Champion Arabian Costume and Hi-Point Youth Award winner.

There are many more competitions and placings, too many to mention, but probably one of the best things about Team Dani and Zakee is the way they have brought the Arabian to the attention of a huge number of people who, before seeing them “knew” Arabians can’t jump and don’t do dressage, and are difficult to ride. They are changing peoples’ perceptions of the breed one competition at a time, and Helen has had a number people approach her at competitions to say they are so impressed with how Zakee jumps/is to handle/does dressage and that they want to breed/own an Arabian too. These two are the best possible ambassadors for the breed, proving to people that the Arabian horse is capable of doing so much, and doing it well, and can make an excellent pony for a child. As Dani and Zakee still have a number of goals to achieve, they will continue to be role models for the next year or two yet. Dani then has plans for Rosewood Faridah, a filly foal born this year who will be tall enough to take her as far up the eventing heights as she wishes to go. Annie Studholme ©

WINDVALE FARAZ

Waho Award 2016 Windvale Faraz (Tahira Faris x Windvale Azleta) is a 13 year old Purebred Gelding, 147cm. “Noah was bred by the late Sue Ferguson of Kaikohe and has been owned by Ellenna Caudwell since January 2012. He has been a great ambassador for the Arabian Breed. Over the last four years he has competed successfully at many different events. Pony Club Noah has attended Pony Club with Ellenna attending many rallies, camps and training squads. They represented Franklin District Pony Club at the North Island Showjumping Championships in 2013 gaining an individual 5th place. Later in 2013 they represented Franklin Thames Valley Pony Club at the Horse of the Year Teams Showjumping and then at the New Zealand Pony Club Eventing Championships held in the Hawkes Bay. Ellenna also passed her Pony Club C+ certificate riding Noah. In 2014 they were again selected for the New Zealand Pony Club Eventing Championships, this time the team won the overall title and Noah and Ellenna finished 8th overall in the 95cm section. They have gained wins and placings at many Franklin District events from Ribbon Days to Dressage and Showjumping. In January 2016 Ellenna gained her full New Zealand Pony Club B Certificate riding Noah. Dressage Noah qualified and competed at Horse of the Year 2014, gaining a 5th place in a level 1 Dressage class, 30 minutes after the dressage placing Noah gained a 3rd place in a 1.10m Showjumping class. Noah and Ellenna were also selected for and attended an Equestrian Sport New Zealand (ESNZ) Pony and Young Rider Dressage Camp. He also attended the North Island Secondary School Dressage Championships with placings over three years, and in 2015 the Pukekohe High School team he was part of won the Overall Open competition. Eventing Noah loves cross country, he has competed at ESNZ events with placings at CNC 105 including 2nd at Puhinui Horse Trials and 6th place at Kihikihi Horse Trials. He has also competed at CNC* (1.10m cross country) placing 5th, he is one of only a handful of ponies competing at this level. He has been lucky enough to attend an ESNZ eventing clinic with Jock Paget. Arabian Shows Noah has attended the Auckland Arabian Spectacular on two occasions, his major successes were in winning the in-hand classic action in 2013, and winning the liberty class and the ridden classic action in 2015.

8

A&P Shows Round-the-ring jumping is another area of success for Noah, he has gained many wins and placings his best results are from the Franklin A&P show where he was placed 1st many times including the Champion Hunter and winning the Gold Cup. The following day he received ribbons in the Arabian in-hand and ridden classes. He has competed in a few A&P shows in the Arabian Section winning many ribbons and has never been un-placed in the classic action classes. Showjumping A change in direction in 2015 has seen Noah compete mainly in showjumping. He has had placings at ESNZ Graded events including 2nd (class of 19) and 3rd at 1.20m; Taupo Christmas Classic 5th (class of 40) in the Pony Accumulator 1.25m; Auckland Manukau Showjumping Pony Grand Prix 1.20-1.30m placed 5th (double clear, approximately 20 in the class). Noah is now jumping Premier Pony Grand Prix 1.25-1.35m. He has competed in many school showjumping events for Pukekohe High School, highlights include being a member of the winning team for the Equestrian Cup in 2014 (over 50 teams in the competition), placings at the North Island Secondary Schools Showjumping Competition in 2015 (2nd and 6th in classes of 56) and a 3rd in the Jigsaw helping the School Team finish 3rd overall. Derby Equidays has provided Noah with a great competition - the Pony Derby. This class has been run for the last three years, with 40 plus ponies in this competition. Noah has placed 9th in 2013, 4th in 2014 and 5th in 2015. He has been the only pony to place every year. by Maree Wickham

WOODLAU’S PHANTOM

Derivative of the Year 2016 Woodlau’s Phantom is a bay Anglo Arabian Gelding born on 5 November 1989. His sire, The Ambassador (AU), was a Purebred Arabian and his dam, Adjani, a Thoroughbred. He was bred by Tracey Rhodes of Woodlau Farm in Christchurch and was purchased by Carolyn Hamlin as a freshly broken in three year old. Phantom competed in the Arabian Section and won numerous championships during his career at All Arabian and A&P shows, including: • • • •

Competing was a family affair with Carolyn, her father and Phantom frequenting the shows and events around Canterbury. On a number of occasions Mr Hamlin would show Phantom in the led classes and Phantom would always “look after him” as he was in his 70’s. Phantom retired from competing at the Canterbury All Arabian Shows in 2008 where he went out in style being awarded Supreme Ridden Arabian. His very last show was the 2008 Canterbury A&P show where he won Reserve Champion Ridden Arabian. Phantom amassed an incredible 170 Champion, Reserve and Supreme sashes over his 15 year career. Carolyn has meticulously kept a handwritten notebook detailing every show that she and Phantom competed at, the name of the judge on the day, their placings in each class and the amount of prize money won (which totalled an incredible $4,500 over his career). At the 2016 Annual General Meeting Woodlau’s Phantom was awarded his Supreme Roll of Merit (for Halter and Ridden and Costume) and was also announced as the inaugural winner of the New Zealand Derivative of the Year Award. Woodlau’s Phantom has been an incredible ambassador for the Arabian breed and continues to enjoy his well earned retirement with Carolyn on the outskirts of Rangiora (photo bottom right).

TARALEA ARABIANS

NZ Purebred Breeder of theYear 2016 Taralea Arabians have won the New Zealand Purebred Breeder of the Year based solely on the achievements of Taralea All Fired Up (Wind ‘N’ Fire (AU) x Taralea Tamara) and Taralea Kamahl (Fairview Shaklas Kaliph (AU) x Taralea Samsara) at the 2016 North and South Island Championships and New Zealand National Arabian Championships.

1

Taralea Arabian Stud was established in 1975 by Bev and John Morrissey with the purchase of their first Purebred, Lansberg (Othello (AU) x Hadley Rille), a colt that was later gelded. The first foal, Shalina (Illiad x Dellmount Carisma), was born at the stud in 1976 – and further mares were purchased both in New Zealand and Australia, with many more foals born in the years that followed. The Ambassador (AU) (Ambition x Rissletta) bred by the Farrell Family of the Mulawa Stud in New South Wales, was imported by Bev and John in 1980 and became their foundation stallion. Bass was a multi-champion at halter and under saddle, and his progeny have also excelled in the show ring, under saddle and in endurance. At the 2016 AGM two of his progeny received Roll of Merit awards - Taralea Tamara (Progeny) and Woodlau's Phantom (Supreme Roll of Merit for Halter, Ridden and Costume). New bloodlines were introduced with the purchase in 1998 of Fairview Shaklas Kaliph (AU) (SK Shakla Khan x Fairview Amira Kahlua), bred by Peter Hall of the Fairview Stud in Sydney. Kaliph is a multi-champion at halter and has also bred successful show and endurance horses. A last minute decision saw Kaliph compete at the 2008 New Zealand National Arabian Championships after a two year break from the show ring – resulting in him taking out the New Zealand National Champion Purebred Stallion title at 14 years old.

2

Both Bev and John were, at different times, Councillors and past-Presidents of the NZAHBS, and Bev was also a Life Member. They were both also instrumental in setting up the Canterbury Arabian Horse Club, of which they were both Life Members. Most of the stud was dispersed when Bev passed away in July 2008, and the remaining few horses sold or placed in life-long homes when John passed away in July 2013. May the legacy that Bev and John have left • continue for many more years to come. 1

KAZMERE STUD

NZ DerivativeBreeder of theYear 2016 We are very proud and honoured to be the inaugural recipients of the New Zealand Derivative Breeder of the Year. Thank you to the NZAHBS for the award and to Kevin Cholmondeley-Smith for donating the trophy.

1

This award solely belongs to Kazmere Armani and the fabulous progeny he has sired over the years who have achieved 30+ NZAHBS New Zealand Led and Ridden National Titles – along with multi Supreme Champion Led and Performance Horse wins. The main man at home, Arnie, is now 22, looking great and is still extremely optimistic that every float that arrives has a mare onboard! Arnie is an Arabian Warmblood by the double Roll of Merit Purebred stallion Shalimar Shazahn. Arnie was also a very successful show horse achieving over 50 Supreme Champion Led and Ridden wins, mostly under International Judges. There isn't a large number of Arnie progeny about (we've only bred four in the past 10 years) but he consistently passes on his attributes to his progeny with them gaining success over most disciplines. A true testament: ratio/numbers came through Equestrian Sport New Zealand when Arnie was listed as a New Zealand Top 10 Dressage Sire. He was the only New Zealand bred horse on the list, and the first for an Arabian bred sire. We are very proud of what Arnie and his progeny have achieved and what they are doing to promote the Arabian breed in New Zealand. Our success over the years could not have come without the support and help of others. Mark Milmine, BJ Bull, Abby Keith, friends and handlers that help out at shows and stallion parades....Thank You! ....and Mel, forever in our thoughts. MAKAHIWI ARABIANS

NZ Endurance Breedeer of theYear 2015 by Hilary Webb

returned home with the stallion Arabian Park Bay Band (AU) (Banderol x Flourish). Banderol was by Sindh, who features in current endurance lines in both New Zealand and Australia.

Makahiwi horses placed first, second and third in one of the first organised endurance rides held in New Zealand and, more than forty years later, Makahiwi Arabians have been crowned NZAHBS Arabian Endurance Breeder of the Year 2015. Many of the horses that contributed points towards the award were sired by a stallion imported to New Zealand in the 1980’s, reinforcing the long time frame, commitment and foresight needed to breed endurance horses.

1

In 1960 Lachie and Sandy Duncan – then farming as Makahiwi Land Company in the Kaitieke area – embarked on breeding functional stock horses that would work all week on hard central North Island hill country, and then be competitive “recreational” mounts on their days off. Most working stock horse lines around Raetihi and Taumarunui in the 1950-60’s included a measure of Arab blood for the toughness, good feet and agility on steep hills. The Duncan brothers secured a young stallion called Nomad (Shereef x Gipsy Maid) in 1960 from the Sisam’s Waimeha Stud, who had already been crossed with stock horse mares in the Kaitieke area with good results, and began to use him across part-bred mares with good conformation. Names such as Min Min, Cracker and Petra (and another mare unnamed other than ‘the Tylee mare’) feature in early Makahiwi pedigrees. The brothers bred primarily for endurance, with an emphasis on conformation and recovery heart rates, but it was not unusual for horses to excel in in a range of disciplines from pony club to showing and polocrosse during the same season. The gelding Shereef (Nomad x PB mare) played polocrosse for King Country and did endurance in the same season, as did the Anglo-Arab mare Cracker (Nomad x Aramoana) and later Makahiwi Zhivago (Nomad x Tara). Endurance as an organised sport was just starting in New Zealand, with the first 80km ride held at Tokoroa in 1971. Lou Gifford riding Cracker won in a time of 2:55:56 (about 27kph). Shimmer (Nomad x Effervescent) was 2nd, followed by other Makahiwi horses - Troubador 3rd, Pancho 5th, and Nomad 9th. Cracker later represented New Zealand against Australia in polocrosse with Lachie Duncan.

12

In 1973, Sandy (with Shimmer) and Alistair Fleming (with Cracker) flew to Australia to contest the Tom Quilty, held that year at Wilberforce in the Blue Mountains, NSW. Despite developing travel anaemia, Cracker was the fourth horse home and first horse across the line in the heavy weight division, though the anaemia took its toll, and the mare missed vetting through by a heartbeat. The two mares

Makahiwi translates as ‘rough ridge track’ and the word aptly describes the country the horses ran on – steep hills, with water to be sought from creeks, springs or dams. Some foals were lost, as was the first purebred mare. Over time, the broodmare band increased with the addition of Ngapa Carmen (Gemmo x Ngapa Isabelle) and Kris (Kareba x Impala), and from 1976 to 1978, seven Waimeha mares Camille (Kamil x Waimeha Dena), Delia (Dynamit x Waimeha Shirley), Monique (Dynamit x Waimeha Letitia), Waimeha Shirley (Grey Swirl x Gipsy Maid) and the full sisters Ophelia, Waimeha Modesty and Varda (Crescendo x Waimeha Pride). Makahiwi pedigrees are noticeable for the regular introduction of new stallion lines, each used for a particular purpose, and crossed judiciously with the core mare lines. Both Nomad and Arabian Park Bay Band were proven working stock horses with the tractable temperaments required for this work. The addition during the 1980’s of the stallion Lochaber Turk (AU) (Domignon x Cherokee Persian Slipper) and mare Lochaber Paisha (AU) (El Calif x Cherokee Persian Slipper) bought Dargee and Royal Domino bloodlines, with the recovery heart rates and athleticism specifically required for endurance. The offspring of Lochaber Turk (AU) include Makahiwi Andromeda, Makahiwi Falcon, Makahiwi Geneca, Makahiwi Phoenix, Makahiwi Riverdance, Makahiwi Spinnaker, and Makahiwi Zircon. Ironically, probably one of the highest achieving horses ever to wear the Makahiwi prefix was of unknown parentage until recent DNA tests confirmed that Makahiwi Achilles was sired by Lochaber Turk (AU). Endurance horses sired by Lochaber Turk (AU) have completed a total of 35,000km in competition. The stud moved to kinder, fertile country north of Taumarunui and began to use the Makahiwi prefix from the 1980’s to promote the breed. Lochaber Turk (AU) left a colt, Makahiwi Portree (out of Lochaber Paisha (AU)) who unfortunately died young but left the good endurance horses Makahiwi Zanzibar (out of Makahiwi Zambesi), Makahiwi Fire (out of Makahiwi Tara) and Makahiwi Matisse (out of Makahiwi Banshee). Arabian Park Bay Band (AU) also left a colt named Makahiwi Iriquois (out of Makahiwi Mistral), who sired the endurance horses Makahiwi Chinook and Makahiwi Waratah. Another Arabian Park Bay Band (AU) son, Makahiwi Lochaber (out of Lochaber Paisha (AU)), has left

In 1984, Sandy Duncan and Makahiwi Zhivargo won the National Endurance title in Thorpe, near Nelson. Makahiwi Zhivargo had just finished a full season of A-Grade polocrosse, and put his fitness to good use. In 1985, Sandy (on Makahiwi Zhivargo), and son, Struan (on Makahiwi Cochise) completed a 40km ride at Karioi in 1:16:25 – just over 30kph – and possibly the fastest ever completed in New Zealand. They swapped mounts for the National Endurance Championships at Waiuku, with Sandy and Makahiwi Cochise placing second that year. Caithness Morning Star (Caithness Sun Chariot x Caithness Capricious) was leased for two years from Larry Hodson for his height and athleticism, leaving nine offspring, including the colt Makahiwi Dominic (out of Waimeha Monique), Makahiwi Pandora (out of Makahiwi Shimmar) and Makahiwi Gazelle (out of Kris). Caithness Morning Star had a full brother doing well in endurance in the USA at the time, and Makahiwi Dominic started in endurance, competing nearly 500kms before an injury forced his retirement to the breeding paddock. Mare tail lines are extremely important at Makahiwi; the retention of this gene pool was emphasised from an early stage, and continues to be a high priority today. Sandy regarded Gipsy Maid as the matriarch of his mare band, and took every opportunity to obtain those bloodlines. Richer Red (Grey Swirl x Grey Girl) was leased from Joe Pittams to refresh the original mare bloodlines. Richer Red’s sons

Makahiwi Pasha Shareef (out of Lochaber Paisha (AU)) and Makahiwi Bay Swirl (out of Makahiwi Kaheela) were also used for a time. Braeburn Spartan (Lochaber Turk (AU) x Waimeha Waina) was also used to re-introduce Waimeha blood to the mare lines. Salib (Waimeha Eclipse x Serana) was also used for a short time as a sire of mares – notably Makahiwi Shannon and Makahiwi Pretoria. Waimeha Detonator, the last Waimeha colt, was used in the early 2000’s to retain mare lines of the type initially used. Ralvon Outback (AU) was used as an outcross from 2010 to about 2013. Ralvon Outback (AU) has a double Ralvon Pilgrim line, complemented by Milex and The Puritan, which feature in endurance horses in Australia.

horses bred by Makahiwi Arabians – hence there are seven Makahiwi horses whose names start with Z. There are 63 horses bearing the Makahiwi prefix registered with ESNZ, and 42 of these have competed in international level FEI endurance, and there were many more Makahiwi horses competing in endurance in the decades prior to ESNZ and FEI registration. Two stallions have left endurance horses that have qualified in over 55,000km. Add the minor stallions and that total may be closer to 75,000km. These numbers, and the horses themselves, are testament to the foresight and horsemanship of Lachie and Sandy Duncan.

Looking ahead, Makahiwi currently stands five stallions, including three young stallions by Ralvon Outback (AU) from the full range of mare lines. Struan plans to retain the workmanlike Crabbet base and quality, and to add a little refinement and beauty. When in Australia in 1973 for the Tom Quilty, Sandy spotted a horse he liked in a paddock as he drove by. Little did he know, that horse was Arabian Park Phaeton, full brother to Arabian Park Bay Band (AU), and winner of the Australian National in hand championships. In what seems like full circle back to the mare lines of Flourish, Makahiwi is now keeping an eye out for some Arabian Park Phaeton descendants. For those who wonder how Makahiwi horses have been named over the past 56 years – the stud uses a systematic and methodical technique – starting at A and working through to Z, before starting over again. Struan Duncan has a record of over 200

In Memory of...

JAZZ (E’Arlia Jairim (AU) x Early Riser (Anglo) ~ (1999-2016) by Kristie Thomas

Jazz has undoubtedly been an amazing ambassador for the Derivative Arabian. His amazing career in the show ring began as a yearling with his breeder Kelly Mason (Kelaray Stud) where he quickly started his championship collection by winning Supreme Derivative Horse of the Year. I fell in love with my beautiful Bud the first time I saw him. At our first show together he was awarded Supreme Champion Led Partbred and Supreme Champion Ridden Arabian, even though he had only just started his saddle career. But it was his amazing nature, his funny quirks and his look at me (and get out of my way) presence that I really loved from the start. Jazz represented the Arabian breed in the open show ring winning multiple Park Hack, Paced and Mannered, Led Horse and Rider championships and competing at the Horse of the Year Show. His career highlights include the 2013 New Zealand National Champion Ridden Male, along with numerous New Zealand National Reserve Champion titles over the years in Ridden Male, Costume, Derivative Dressage, Amateur Handler, and Derivative Gelding. He was the first Derivative to receive his NZAHBS Roll of Merit at Halter, his Performance Roll of Merit and his Elite Roll of Merit. Bud was such a consistent performer, winning the Auckland Arabian Horse Club Partbred Gelding Hi-Point Horse of the Year award 13 times, the Performance Horse of the Year award 9 times, and the Partbred in Open Competition, Costume and Best Combination awards half a dozen times each. Over our 11 year partnership he has brought home over 250 sashes. Bud loved to show and I loved showing him. He would run onto the float in the morning and would stand for hours to have all his make-up applied. Turnout classes were one of our favourites! Bud especially loved competing in Liberty classes, where he proved he could still out trot the young ones, and where he remained unbeaten. But to go from Liberty or Ridden Champion to being ridden by 4 year old, really showed his true loving nature. My daughter, Lexi, often rode Bud at shows, where he was happily turned into an overgrown led rein pony competing in Youth Arabian classes. Bud was laid to rest at home after a short, but tough, battle with cancer in May at 16 years of age. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever find another Bud - a stunning, kind, yet full of himself horse that was only ridden 8 times a year at shows. He was my once in a lifetime horse and my best mate. I am incredibly grateful that we had him as a part of our family for as long as we did. Rest in peace my beautiful boy, you are forever in our hearts.

MARE PROFILE DELL ADORINA (Iliad x Forina) by Virginia Dean

The Mane Focus ©

The beautiful old mare Dell Adorina, is everything I could ever have wished for. A daughter of my hero stallion, Iliad (Othello x Silver Dawn); and through her dam Forina, Adorina is a grand-daughter of the Wentworth bred stallion Silver Sparkle. The family strain is Dahmeh Om Aamr of Ibn Hemsi’s strain. My first horse carried the same dam lines/strain as did his half sister whom I later purchased, and two better saddle horses I could not have asked for. The horses of this dam line and strain are undoubtedly something special. Dell Adorina was bred at the Dellmount Stud by my good friend and mentor, the late Brian Ross, and sold on to well-known horseman Michael Goodwin. Michael bred Adorina back to her sire to produce the lovely mare Festive Fields Dorinada. When I heard that Michael was selling Adorina, I scrambled to Southland to procure her before anyone else could snap her up. Adorina, true to her family lines (and her name), has the most ‘adorable’ nature and earned the paddock name of Dora. She arrived at Anazeh Arabians as a rising 4 year old and quickly wormed her way into my heart with her cheeky little face and placid, people-loving nature. Her conformation was and still is (now in her twilight years) superb, and everyone has always loved her elevated and powerful movement. Easily accepting saddle and bridle like she had done it all before, I nevertheless long-reined Dora round the roads of Darfield, through fords and up and down banks, she marching boldly ahead while

20

I puffed and panted behind her, trying to keep up and thinking that maybe this long-reining business wasn’t such a good idea after all…Dora has a magnificent walk, easily overtracking by a good 16 inches. Riding her was a good way to see a lot of countryside in a short time with her ground-covering stride and friends on hacks were often left lagging behind on many of our rides. I spent a bit of time introducing Dora to things like walking over plastic sheets, dragging things behind her, and carrying buckets of water etc all of which she accepted with nonchalance. Well known horseman Linney Morris had high praise for her during a trail class at one of our early All Arabian shows. I enjoyed showing Dora at all sorts of shows and was delighted when she received high accolades from many judges, not all of them Arabian enthusiasts either. They always commented on her action and lovely deep body with well set and shaped neck. Dora even came to develop her own ringside ‘fan club’ at the Arabian shows with people clapping and calling for her. Dora has amassed several championship ribbons over the years and has always won or placed highly in the action classes. Dora has left some lovely progeny – the aforementioned Festive Fields Dorinada, a champion under saddle and great favourite riding horse of Brian Ross. In turn, Dorinada has produced a number of successful horses including Dell Lamees (her story also appears in this issue) and Dell Husna. Dell Husna, a multi-champion saddle horse, is now owned and dearly loved by Megan Evans. Husna has foaled

two delightful derivatives, the latest bred by Megan and sired by Apsley Trade Secret. Megan is eager to bring Husna back into work once her filly is weaned. I have bred several foals from Dora myself and it was always a toss up between keeping her going under saddle or putting her in foal. Either way, I could leave her for years between riding her and just put the saddle on and off we would go for a hack, no drama, no bother, just a girl and her horse enjoying a lovely ride. I am pleased to say that all her progeny which I have ridden and trained myself have all had the same attitude, there is no need for endless lungeing first or having to ride them every day. You just get on when you fancy a ride, and go. Dora’s first foal for me was by my New Zealand National Champion stallion Anwar Sadat. Anazeh’s Silver Echo was a lovely filly with extraordinarily pretty movement and people would pull up on the side of the road to watch and photograph her in the paddock. Dora’s next foal for me was another filly, Anazeh’s Rose of Eden, who is 93% Crabbet lines, being sired by the Australian import, Fakkar (deceased). She is one of only two purebreds sired by this beautiful little stallion who was imported by the late Patsy Grigg of Caithness Stud. Rose is his only filly and having just repurchased her recently, I am keen to breed a foal from her to continue the line. Rose of Eden has only been shown once for a neckful of ribbons and a Reserve Champion. My circumstances had changed shortly

Virginia Dean ©

before Rose of Eden was born and many of my horses had to be sold but I determinedly held on to Dora at all costs. A year or two down the track and I was able to repurchase Anwar Sadat and duly bred the pair again to produce a look-alike to Silver Echo in yet another filly, Anazeh’s Glorious Silver. This beautiful mare grew to be my special horse in so many ways, we had a fabulous bond – I could work her at distant liberty, she accepted being ridden just as her dam had and we enjoyed so many hacks down through the river and round the roads. She performed perfectly at her first show under saddle with minimal previous work and in fact, a three week holiday beforehand due to my judging commitments, so I was very proud of her ribbons. Gloria was only small at 14hh but had a huge heart. I say had, because I lost my special girl when she was only 9 years old, in her prime, following an accident caused by a speeding tractor. At the time I was unaware of her internal injuries which led to her demise some weeks afterwards and this loss still brings me to tears as I write this. I can’t believe I will never see her again. Dora was again bred to Anwar Sadat for his last foal. Sadly I lost him to colic before the next filly was born so I named her Anazeh’s Aziza al Sadat, Aziza meaning ‘precious’. Aziza has grown to be the spitting image of her great-grand-dam, Ruminaja Ghalima (US). The resemblance is astonishing even down to distinctive colour, markings, and

Petra Luzamova ©

Cathy Nolan ©

stance. So far I have been unable to get Aziza in foal but I will keep trying as she is a lovely mare with of course, the same delightful nature. After I lost Sadat, I was able to purchase the Naaddel stallion Touch of Maan. Bred to Dora, they produced an outstanding colt, Dora’s one and only colt she ever produced. I named him Anazeh’s Touch of Silver and loved watching him play and cavort round the paddock. A cheeky young lad but nevertheless easy to handle, he was sold to Petra Luzamova as a weanling and undertook the huge journey to Southland all in his stride, walking up on to the transporter like he had done it all before. It was Petra’s intention to take him back to the Czech Republic when she returned but she has since decided to remain in New Zealand so I must say I am rather glad he is still around! Anazeh’s Touch of Silver was South Island Champion Junior Colt first time shown and has also been awarded Champion Arabian at the Southland A&P Show. Petra enjoys riding Silver and he has just sired his first foals this season. Silver is maturing into a beautiful horse and I love watching his progress. With Touch of Maan being sold back to his previous owner, I then searched for another stallion for the Stud and chose the Australian import and twice Reserve New Zealand Champion Stallion, Soolai’mon (AU). Soolai’mon, as everyone knows, was a

dream to handle and I just knew I couldn’t go wrong, breeding him over Adorina. Once again, Dora produced a filly – Anazeh’s Radiant Silver, who, rising 5, looks like she might finally be reaching her full height at around 15.1hh, maybe more. Radi is an impressive girl with the X-factor and has jaw-dropping extension and elevation. I have not shown her as she has always grown hindquarter-first in spurts so is only really coming into her own now. My vet thinks she is ‘seriously gorgeous’ amongst other fans who love her inquisitive nature and superb conformation. She is really quite outstanding and has a wonderful future ahead of her. So, with Dora now 27 years old and looking the picture of serenity and good health, I hope I can enjoy seeing her in my paddocks for some years to come. She has been a most wonderful mare for me and I am proud that her lines have bred on to produce some outstanding horses and all with the same wonderful temperament. Dora is a very special mare and I love her dearly.

MARE PROFILE

DELL LAMEES (Dell Hama x Festive Fields Dorinada) by Wendy McMahon Dell Lamees is sired by the Dubai World Endurance Challenge Winner Dell Hama out of Festive Fields Dorinada (Iliad ex Dell Adorina). It was on a field trip during an Equine Course I was taking through Aparima College Riverton as an Adult Student that I first set eyes on Lamees. The visit was on a wet cold early winter day to the Dellmount Arabian Stud Farm in Gore, Southland of Brian Ross. Brian was the perfect host - very proud to show all the students his adored Arabians and answering any questions we had. We were able to walk into the paddocks and view these beautiful horses up close. Something magical happened as a young foal decided to walk straight up to me, curious, brave, a beautiful filly. I asked who is this foal and if she was for sale. A couple of weeks later I phoned again and soon after Lamees was delivered to me at my Otatara, Invercargill, property by Brian himself. She had never been on a float but had walked straight on, travelled well and unloaded like she had been doing this all her life. Brian walked her around her new paddock and I was beaming with joy – my very first Pure Arabian Filly was purchased. I had previously competed in registered Dressage Competitions on the Pure Arabian “Jadu”, bred by the late Bill Scorgie and had won and placed in many competitions gaining a 6th place in the New Zealand National Dressage Awards for Points for the Year which was a truly rewarding thing - given I was on a pure Arabian and competing against Warmbloods. Jadu was 15.1hh, had great bone, lovely paces and his temperament under saddle was super which put us ahead of our competition who could spook at certain things such as leaves blowing across the arena but not dear Jadu, he stayed focused and never flinched. However, we had to work extra hard and do extra well to gain the places we did to win over the many times overheard “Arabian knockback”. Dressage is expensive and needs a lot of dedication so if I wanted to be more competitive I needed to head towards the Warmblood Dressage purpose-bred horse but as a very first dressage horse I would do it all again!

22

It was having researched on the internet that I came across two breeders in the USA who were using pure Arabian Mares crossing with licensed approved Hanoverian Stallions to produce the most amazing horses for the dressage and show arenas. All their horses were inspected, classified and registered into the Oldenburg Stud book. Their paces were truly outstanding, beauty beyond belief, good height at least 16hh, super temperaments and fantastic results in competition arenas around the USA. I decided this is what I wanted to try.

Lamees had been backed at age four and after she arrived back home I had literally six rides on her before we were at our first ridden competition. She came along with my Andalusian Anglo that I bred who I rode in the Hack Ring and Lamees in the Park Hack ring, she measured 154cm. It was just one of those days when everything fell into place and the gods where smiling down on me. Both horses won all their classes and both went on to be awarded Champion Trophies. I remember the Championship class for Lamees – four judges watching and Lamees doing the most amazing trot that made it hard for them to stop watching her, what a proud day! Lamees had a few more ridden shows in which she did extremely well and it was great for Brian to see her under saddle at the South Island Arabian Championships held in Mosgiel, Otago one season. The first Stallion I chose for Lamees was “Anamour”, the black Hanoverian stallion that had been imported to New Zealand by a syndicate, standing in Palmerston North. It took 3 years before my vets had someone who was trained and experienced in AI and finally it was beginning to happen. I just ticked the boxes along the way and soon Lamees was showing signs that foaling was impending. I put a mattress from my horse truck down in a stable and left the gate open and from there the gate open to the yard and then to a small paddock so Lamees could chose where to have her foal. As it was she almost had her first foal on my mattress and I had to be quick on my feet to move it or the foal would have landed right on it! A very dark colt the colour of a seal, mostly black tinged with brown but very beautiful and healthy. I named him “Amoureux” (pictured below) and he was everything I had hoped for and more! He was registered in both the Arabian and Warmblood Studbooks as I had had Lamees inspected for the NZ Warmblood studbook one year and she passed with good marks.

Wendy McMahon ©

I had purchased a Hanoverian mare and managed to find a dose of frozen semen for sale by a stallion I adored called “Rotspon”. He also was a licensed approved Hanoverian standing at stud in Germany at Celle. One day I was kicked by the Hanoverian mare while I was taking her rug off so in a huff I said ‘You’re not getting the Rotspon semen, I’m giving it to Lamees’ and there it was! Two seasons of trying and Lamees had a pregnancy with a beautiful filly born named “Rotspon’s Ruby WP”. Only very recently Dell Lamees has been accepted into the German Verband Oldenburg Main Mare Studbook and subsequently Rotspon Ruby WP is now registered and microchipped as an “Oldenburg” in Germany all of which I am extremely proud. It was a lengthy, involved and costly procedure but I am sure well worth it. I can’t be certain but Dell Lamees could be the very first New Zealand bred pure Arabian to be accepted by the German Oldenburg Verband. Five years ago I purchased a licensed approved Hanoverian Stallion from Germany named “Royal Mirage” by Rotspon. He carries Rubinstein bloodlines and being out of a Weltmeyer mare has world famous dressage bloodlines on both sides. Lamees has produced an upstanding modern filly by Royal Mirage who I have named “Royal Love Story WP”. I am sure that all the progeny I have produced out of Dell Lamees will be superstars in the competition arena and it gives me such joy that they have her amazing adoring natures, so incredibly easy to train and be around. Everyone who meets them falls in love with their incredible affectionate but gentle natures. Their beauty, movement, grace and height are everything I had hoped for and all very modern looking Warmblood/Arabian Derivatives. Recently Dell Lamees was sold to Robyn Barker. I was extremely thankful at such a wonderful home being given and I am thrilled to hear she will be having a pure Arabian foal. I miss Lamees dearly and she will forever carry an extra special place in my heart.

Gerzanne Arabian Stud as been breeding Arabian horses for almost 50 years. The stud began with the importation of predominantly Crabbet lines from Australia. However, it was not until the importation of Simeon Shomer (AU), an El Shaklan grandson that we finally felt we were making headway in our breeding programme. Simeon Shemini (Asfour x Simeon Shuala), a Straight Egyptian colt arrived at the stud to cross with the Shomer daughters, and this is when we believe our Stud made the biggest advances. It is recognised that at some point a Straight Egyptian stallion should be introduced to a breeding programme to improve type. Simeon Shemini had the most amazing temperament and this together with his type led us to embark on a Straight Egyptian breeding programme – importing three Straight Egyptian mares again from Simeon Stud, Australia. Sadly we lost our Shem in March this year which has been devastating for us.

S imeon S hemini

H

The next stallion imported by Gerzanne - to cross over the Simeon Shemini daughters was TF Fezzan, imported in 2005 from Talaria Farms, USA.

TF Fezzan

TF Fezzan is by Botswana by the legendary Thee Desperado, from a Ramses mare – Ramses Forever. Botswana, a 1998 Straight Egyptian stallion, is royally bred with three crosses to Ruminaja Ali and another to Ansata Ibn Halima. Botswana’s own beauty and correctness have garnered top show ring honours culminating in the 2009 US Egyptian Event Champion Stallion and Supreme Champion Stallion. For the first time in the history of the Event, the Supreme Champion Stallion was also the leading sire. Prior to being exported from the USA, TF Fezzan was the 2005 Reserve Champion 3 Year Old Stallion at the US Egyptian Event and Grand Champion Stallion (all ages) ATH at the same show. TF Fezzan then went on to become the 2009 NZ Reserve National Champion Stallion and 2011 NZ National Champion Stallion. We have certainly not been disappointed with our choice of TF Fezzan as our next stallion. The progeny he is leaving have probably been overshadowed by the Simeon Shemini foals. The few we have shown have lived up to our expectations. SS Kais - 2011 NZ National Champion Intermediate Colt and 2013 NZ National Champion Stallion. SS Farid – 2014 NZ National Champion Stallion – full brother to SS Kais. At the 2015 NZ National Championships, we took three TF Fezzan progeny, winning the NZ National Champion Intermediate Gelding with SS Seth (1) and taking Top Five honours with SS Athulya (2) and SS Tiflaa (3) in the Champion Mare class, with SS Suri, by Simeon Shemini, winning the NZ National Champion Mare Title. Gerzanne has also retained two impeccably bred stallions SS Malak (SS Ariq an Nasab (IIU) by Anaza Bay Shahh x Simeon Setami, by Simeon Sadik, twice Reserve World Champion Stallion) and SS Kais (TF Fezzan x Simeon Setami) – both these stallions ensure that their bloodlines will be retained for the future of the Gerzanne Straight Egyptian breeding programme.

In 2011 Bev and I attended the World Championships (Salon Du Cheval) in Paris. While watching the mare class, a beautiful grey mare, entered the ring and she completely took my breath away – her name was Emandoria. Not knowing much about Polish Arabians, I quickly looked at the show catalogue to find out her breeding. Emandoria is by Gazal Al Shaqab out of Emanda.

Emandoria

TF Fezzan is the seventh stallion imported by Gerzanne since its inception and finding with age – (I am now 83 and Bev is 66) - stallions are too hard for us to handle. Gerzanne is in a predicament in that our lovely mares are so interbred that new blood is required. We have decided that instead of importing another boy we will use stallions from around the world to improve our gene pool.

Unbeknown to us at the World Championships, I had also picked a yearling colt as my champion – he was Emerald J by QR Marc out of Emandoria. Although he did not win at that show, he unbelievably now has a daughter out of SS Bahiya (Simeon Shemini x SS Barzani) born at Gerzanne, plus a further two mares due in the Spring. We excitedly await the outcome, which we never dreamed possible.

SS Bahiya & SS Emeera

Emerald J

When I returned home I researched this beautiful mare – Emandoria, from the Michalow State Stud’s phenominal “E” line, being out of Emanda a World Champion Mare. Emandoria had at nine years of age taken the exclusive European Triple Crown title and many other titles including – Double World Champion as a filly in 2005 and Mare in 2013, 2007 US National Champion Mare, 2009 Las Vegas World Cup Supreme Champion Mare and 2013 Dubai Gold Champion Mare.

QR Marc

Emerald J is by QR Marc, who in 2013 was crowned World Champion Stallion; Aachen All Nations Cup Gold Champion Stallion; Abu Dhabi and Dubai Gold Champion Stallion. “The mating of two World Champions very rarely guarantees success. In the case of Gazal Al Shaqab and Emanda, the cross was an unqualified success, resulting in Emandoria, an individual superior in all ways to her extraordinary parents”. Scott Benjamin Life has its ups and downs, disappointments and achievements, but until the end arrives, we will continue to search for the elusive perfect Arabian to share with all who care. Will our dreams come true?

Gerzanne Arabian Stud

DAWN VALLEY ARABIANS by Adele Maraki

The past year has been an interesting one starting with the sale of my very beautiful 2015 National Champion Junior Filly – Kelaray Exzotika to an overseas buyer. It was exciting in that I knew she was going to a good home and to a place that offered her so many more opportunities to shine in the showing barn and the breeding barn. It wasn’t a decision that was taken lightly but has been helped by receiving a number of updates and photos since the sale. A little while later an opportunity presented itself to purchase a beautifully bred chestnut filly that took my breath away. Marwans Magnifique MPA (AU) or “Maggie” as she is known gives me chills every time I see her. She is a Marwan Al Magniffico granddaughter and looks every inch like her magnificent grand sire. The plan was to campaign Maggie for the Australian show season with the East Coast Championships and Australian Nationals as my end goal. She didn’t disappoint. I had to make a choice as to which show I was going to attend and I made the choice to go to the Australian Nationals which meant that I was only able to watch the East Coast Championships via live streaming and what a show to watch. Maggie went on to win the Championship in the 2 year old filly section at the 2016 East Coast Championships in Sydney in a strong class and secured the Silver Championship Junior Filly at the Australian Championships in March 2016. The Australian Championships was the first major show I have been able to attend and the first time in a year that I was able see Maggie (Marwans Magnifique MPA) in the flesh. Although our shows in New Zealand are well run and have fantastic atmospheres and the people are as passionate and enthusiastic about their horses as they are in Australia, it is on a much smaller scale. The scale of the Australian Championships was mind boggling. The seamlessly smooth running of a show so large was impressive and the friendly people I met and talked to made memories I will keep for a long time. The best part about owning and showing horses in Australia is about the amazing shows you attend, the people you meet and in watching and admiring the huge number of beautiful horses in the show rings. The hardest part for me is not being able to interact with your horses every day as you would if they were in your own paddocks. Someone else gets to see them every day and watch them grow and learn. Someone else gets to kiss their silky muzzles and breathe in their scent and someone else gets to hear them call out when they see you. That’s the hard part.

DESERT HERITAGE by Demelza Hoogeveen

Our only foal for the 2015/2016 season was born in October, the gorgeous colt, Tornado DH (pending), who later went on to win the coveted title of NZ National Champion Junior Colt, just like his sire, Shaheen Al Saba (AU) (Thaqib Al Nasser x La Moniette) back in 2008. Tornado is out of our beautiful old mare Fairview Shakla’s Shania (AU) (SK Shakla Khan x Pasqunell Shakira), a big moving girl who is a multichampion under saddle and in halter. She hit the show ring again this year, for NZ National Top Five Mare in one of the largest and deepest mare classes we have seen in a while. My “partner in crime” Carmen Tuite, and I, had the opportunity to buy a very special mare, Redwood Lodge Estonia (AU) (Om El Abadan x Windella Silver Fire). She is rising 21 and we are crossing our fingers that we will get her breeding again. She is still a stunning mare and we took her to two shows, where she won South Island Reserve Champion Mare and NZ National Reserve Champion Mare – even though a little stiff in her movement now, she has still got it! Carmen and I bred a precious chestnut filly together, Essence of Arwen (CRA Sihr Shahrif (US) x SS Shula). We are very proud of this girl, and have shown her three times, for South Island Premier Show Reserve Champion Arabian (against seniors), South Island Reserve Champion Filly, and then took out the ultimate, NZ National Champion Junior Filly – beating her stablemate, Yanah Bint Shaheen (bred and owned in partnership with Lee Cox). Yanah Bint Shaheen, or “Missy”, is a tall and elegant daughter of Shaheen Al Saba and Euralea Fire N Desire, and we are very happy to have another full sibling cooking at the moment. The season culminated with Shaheen Al Saba (AU) attending the Arabian Extravaganza with Enstrom Performance Horses, where he impressed the crowd with his joi de vivre under saddle (only his 5th ride since being started two years ago and turned out). Happily, we can announce that export plans have changed and Shaheen will now stay in New Zealand to continue his ridden career with Chris and Ursula. Six foals by Shaheen are due this season. NGODEVWA ARABIANS by Anthea Adams

At Ngodevwa we have been concentrating on training our horses for riding rather than breeding from them for a few years. Our stallion, Ngodevwa Yanni (Ngapa Phoenix x Five-R Caprice), bred by us has always been our riding horse and has sired some of the horses we have bred.

Our horses are versatile with temperaments and free movement. Ngodevwa Arabians Waiuku, Auckland P: +64 9 235 9812 E: daadams@ps.gen.nz Right:

We have always trained our own horses and find it an excellent way by which to know them. At present the four and five year old geldings Ngodevwa Summer Skies and Ngodevwa Tussock are in training. Karamea Seraphina will begin riding training in the summer having been successfully shown inhand previously. Ngodevwa Sylvan Silk (Ngodevwa Yanni x Joussita) is mainly ridden by my son, Matthew. Matthew and I share Karamea Ballerina who was bought in from Alison Steward’s Estate. She is a sweet, sensible mare and a joy to ride. Ngodevwa Zilfi (Ranaarb (AU) x Ngodevwa Enchanting Star Dancer) is a favourite of Matthew’s and has been on treks and many forest rides, often with different riders.

ROSEWOOD FARM by Helen Chambers

It has been an exciting year at Rosewood Farm Performance Stud, this season seeing the arrival of two beautiful fillies, the first foals of Rosewood Al Farid (River Oak Colorado (AU) x Manton Mishaal (AU)).

Cup round the ring pony hunter class, something Dani has always wanted to do; it will be seriously cool seeing a purebred competing against the best pony hunters from around the South Island in November.

First to arrive was Rosewood Faridah (pending), from Rosewood Rhiannon; a bay with all the height, substance and movement I expected from this cross. Added to this is the most delightful temperament. Rita has been shown twice so far, coming home with South Island Supreme Champion Purebred and New Zealand National Top 3 Junior Filly. Next up was Rosewood Naasheeta (pending) from Naahrah; a spunky liver chestnut with her dam’s beautiful movement and a cheeky nature who has thrown back to Colorado in type. I couldn’t have asked for better from Ollie for his first babies.

On top of this Dani has a new ride – Gleneyre Exclusive (Mizar x Highland Tasha), a lovely 8 year old purebred gelding standing at around 15.1hh. Bred by Cherie Murdoch, his dam is a full sister to Cherie’s fantastic Garabaldi, and we are incredibly lucky to have him. Cherie has got too busy with her scurry racing, so she bravely let Dani have the ride on him. Finn has been here two weeks and is loving the work and attention; he is jumping 80cm without even trying (he has never jumped before), and doing some lovely flat work. His first competition will be a 65cm combined training class in June (dressage and show-jumping), and once he has been shown cross country jumps he will start eventing. With his natural jumping style and fabulous movement I don’t think he will take long to get up the heights, and it will be fantastic to show the eventing community yet another Arabian succeeding in style.

Meanwhile Dani and Rosewood Zakee have had a brilliant year with many wins and championships for eventing, dressage, show-jumping, hunter jumping and showing. Currently on the kitchen dresser are three cups, three trophies and her certificate for the Brian Ross Young Achiever Award. Their focus over winter is to continue training with the odd competition, working towards Springston Trophy in September where they will be competing at 95cm for Okuku Pony Club. Dani and Zakee have also qualified for the Canterbury A&P show Ballantyne

WAIORA FARM by Jessica Main

standing she had a chance and he was still going to come out, so we waited. On the vet’s arrival we packed the wound and bandaged her up. It was now up to Khandi and myself nursing her; the vet did explain that she could still bleed out, and how to shoot a horse effectively.

Bonni Ramsden ©

Last time I wrote a snippet for Rayjan Khandi was at the end of 2014, after she had just won Champion Purebred Filly at the Arabian Spectacular in Auckland. We were looking forward to competing her at the National Show in Karaka, however this was not to be. After having a silly paddock accident she was on paddock rest for several months and it was hard for me to sit back with a filly in perfect show condition, and not be able to show her. But we had fun settling Bacchante Paparazzi (AU) into life on this side of the ditch. Paparazzi then did a stint down with Leesa Anderson, Regent Park, where she (as always) prepared him beautifully for the Auckland Arabian Spectacular. Heath Rowbottom then came over and showed him to win the Supreme Purebred Exhibit title. Thanks to the organisers and sponsors; it was a great show, and we were stoked to be able to win this at his debut show. Paparazzi then got on the float to come home to Whangarei where we had some mares waiting for him to breed, all four went into foal first try:

up with Paparazzi, and it was his roaring that alerted me to a “problem.” On arrival to the paddock my first impression was that Khandi was a dead horse walking. The blood was fountaining out of a hole in the area where her head connects to her cheekbone. I managed to get there in enough time to plug the hole with my fingers and yelled for mum to catch Pap, who was making a nuisance of himself. She was very “flat”, to the point where she was letting me have a substantial amount of my hand inside her throat without a halter on and I was able to keep the wound blocked up till the vet arrived, over an hour later. At one point I asked mum to fetch the gun….as I had lost the hole and she had started bleeding out again, and given the amount of blood she had already lost I just couldn’t see how she would survive. But I managed to find the hole again and the vet was adamant that if she was still

Khandi’s expected foal is by far the most anticipated. This is not only because she is my precious princess, but because 14 days after she was last served she suffered a massive wound. She had stabbed herself in the throat, nicking her jugular, “luckily” she went through two fences and ended

Monique Main ©

Thankfully with extensive nursing and iron supplements, she is still with us today. Given the massive blood loss she experienced neither myself nor the vet expected the (yet to be confirmed) pregnancy to survive. But against all odds a blood test was done and she did in fact hold the pregnancy, a true miracle! This experience tested me, I was ready to throw the towel in with owning and breeding, “if Khandi doesn’t make it, I am done, they are all going!” However she made it and so we will carry on and wrap her in cotton wool and bubble wrap for the rest of the pregnancy! My hopes are high that things will settle down over winter. Bacchante Paparazzi will be available at public stud this coming season, please refer to our advert for more information. We would also like to extend our congratulations to Jan and Ray Wilson, with their New Zealand National Champion Mare title win with WaiOra Audacious Lady. So very pleased Lady is back with Rayjan Arabians, and her successes in the show ring are continuing, we miss her. WaiOra Farm Hikurangi, Whangarei P: +64 21 209 7917 E: jess_ssdd@hotmail.com Above:

WOODLAU FARM by Tracey Rhodes

Woodlau Farm hosted a professional photographic shoot over summer with a professional photographer from the North Island and Woodlau's paddocks were overrun by beautiful girls in white dresses mingling with the grazing horses. These are a few of the photographs taken with up and coming model, Ashleigh Hazeldine, Portfolio Model Agency. You would not think so by the relaxed look in the photographs, but Ashleigh had not associated with horses at all prior to the photo shoot. Purebred stallion, Haddidi (AU) was the perfect gentleman and looked after her beautifully.

34

Woodlau's Ibn Tradition made his show debut at the 2016 New Zealand National Arabian Championships coming home with Reserve Champion Purebred Stallion. The lead up to the show included a lot of firsts for this 5 year old - first time being halter trained, first time on a horse float, first time off the property and first time at a show. Considering the week prior to the Nationals I underwent surgery on my hand, I was really pleased with the way he took all of this in his stride. He is currently in the process of being backed by Rosalie Kerr. Two Purebred geldings have recently been

sold to Endurance homes. Planning is underway to decide which mares to breed in the coming season. Woodlau Farm Christchurch P: +64 3 349 7316 E: traceyrhodes@xtra.co.nz

WHO HAS SIRED

1

The Winners ? by Jan Wilson

This is a simplistic chart of who has sired the winners at the South and North Island Championships and the National Show for the last 10 years, 2006 to 2016. This is not a leading sire competition, that would not be viable due to the lack of information regarding class sizes, number of progeny entered etc. Some of the stallions listed have been around for quite some time and others are just starting their breeding career so no way should any comparison be made. Only the Top 10 are listed. Over 10 years there were approximately 120 stallions that had sired progeny that had won at National level and where possible I have included any Top 3’s or Top 5’s. There were many stallions that have sired one or two Champions or Reserves but it would not be practical to list them all so I have allocated each sire 10 points for Champion, 8 points for Reserve Champion and 5 points for a Top 3 or Top 5 and taken the Top 10 for the chart. This survey is Purebreds only and includes Halter Champions and mainstream Ridden Champions. Youth, Amateur and such like are not included. Paced & Mannered Championships that included Purebred and Derivative finalists the points were allocated to a Purebred if they won Champion or Reserve.

North

and

The busiest sire of National Champions has without doubt been the beautiful Simeon Shemini (AU). This is not a competition but if it was I am sure he would have been a worthy winner. I understand he has sired 20 National Champions and 15 Reserves, a great achievement. Obviously all his wins did not fall into the 10 year period that this survey has covered. The North and South Island combined chart covered 97 stallions and was more challenging to do than the National chart. Information was sometimes rather difficult to source and a bit sketchy, especially with the earlier shows and it most certainly does not help when Purebred results are sent, to our breed magazine, with no breeding supplied and as we do not have the luxury of an electronic stud book and it has been some time since we published a hard copy stud book it was a time consuming exercise to get it all together. Thank you to Fiona, our Secretary, Louise Raymond and Demelza Hoogeven for taking the time and filling in some of the huge gaps.

In Memory of...

SIMEON SHEMINI (AU) (1994-2016) by Sue Spratt & Bev Jones

On 26 September 1994 our lives were changed forever. A very special colt foal had been born at Simeon Stud, Australia. His name was Simeon Shemini. Simeon Shemini was sired by the great Asfour (Malik x Hanan by Alaa El Din) and was out of Simeon Shuala (Simeon Shai x Ramses Tinah by Ramses Fayek). The moment we saw him, when he was three months of age, we fell in love with him and knew that ‘Shem’ had to come to our farm, Gerzanne Stud, on New Zealand’s North Island. Shem arrived in Auckland by plane at five months of age. All we could see of him as he was offloaded was this tiny, beautiful little fellow, peering out of his crate, with the biggest, most ‘poppy’ eyes we had ever seen. Once he arrived at his home for life, he quickly settled in and became the cornerstone of Gerzanne Stud. By the time Shem was four, he had won everything there was to win in New Zealand – North Island Supreme Champion, New Zealand National Junior Champion, New Zealand National Champion Stallion and, his greatest achievement, – New Zealand National Supreme Exhibit. This was back in the days when show entries were huge, with classes full. However well he did in the show-ring, it was as a sire that Simeon Shemini excelled, producing foal after foal of champion quality. Shem’s very first foal was SS Barabas (ex SS Barzani by Simeon Shomer), foaled in 1999. At 11 months of age, he was exported to the Royal Stables in Jordan, where even today he is shown with great success.

54

To date, Simeon Shemini has produced 20 New Zealand National Champions, 18 Reserve National Champions and many National Top Five Awards that are too numerous to list. These all came from Gerzanne’s Straight Egyptian and Egyptian related mares. To have had so many winners is an amazing accolade and without a doubt, Shem is New Zealand’s Leading Sire. For us, Simeon Shemini was not only correct but he also had beautiful Arabian type. He was a gentle soul with the most

amazing temperament of any horse we have ever owned – never a bite or a kick. Shem’s life was spent in a paddock beside the house where he shared his life with us, which he undoubtedly did having been with us from five months of age until his 22nd year. In that same paddock, he will remain, with our love, admiration and thoughts forever. His passing leaves a huge hole at the stud, and we know that things will never quite be the same again. Run free, sweet Shem. Thank you for everything that you so graciously gave to us. We will always love you.

Simeon Shemini (Asfour/Simeon Shuala)

26 September 1994 – 8 March 2016

The cornerstone of Gerzanne. Shem lived with us from the age of 5 months and his passing has left a huge hole in our hearts – run free Shem.

A New Zealand legend – 1999 NZ Champion Stallion and Supreme Exhibit – 20 NZ Champion and 18 Reserve Champion Progeny.
