PRESIDENT’S REPORT Hello to our members and all Arabian enthusiasts Our 2014 AGM was held in Ashburton on Saturday 10th May and many thanks to those 31 people who attended. We all knew we had quite a programme to get through but with everyone’s co-operation the afternoon progressed in an orderly fashion and as always the voting decided the major decisions on the day. Congratulations to all the award winners and if I had one wish it would be to see more people present to receive them! It can take many years to accumulate what is required and recognition is truly deserved. Your Council for 2014/15 is listed on the previous page and on the website, very similar to last year, with the addition of Kelly Mason from Northland. I am happy to take the position as your President for another 12 months with Mark Milmine as Vice President. The new Council is already having discussions about various things including the completion of this Arabianz, placing minutes of our meetings on the website, correspondence from RAS, updating our website, where our Council meetings will be held for the next year and various other topics. These will all be discussed and finalised at our next meeting in Christchurch on the 2nd July 2014. Any business that requires NZAHBS Council consideration must be sent to Fiona well before this date. Congratulations to all those Endurance combinations that have been selected to represent New Zealand at WEG in France later on this year. They are Andrea Smith and Glenmore Tariq, Georgia Smith and Glenmore Vixen – mother and daughter from Mangaweka. Braden Cameron from Wellington rides Karamea Krusader and two South Islanders, being Alison Higgins from Nelson on Northwinds Apollo and Susie Latta with Tkiwa from Otago. Please take the time to follow the wonderful New Zealand bred Arabian horses that will represent us on the world stage in Endurance in France in a few months time. The NZAHBS Council is looking forward to a positive year. Regards to you all Melanie Barker, NZAHBS President

AGM STUD TOUR by Melanie Barker An enthusiastic group set off from the Ashburton Hotel about 10am Sunday, the day after the AGM. First stop was at Fiona Gemmell’s Jym-Aud Arabians. We were shown two grey purebred Arabian mares, the first of which was JA Serene (Simeon Shomer (AU) x JA Gai Serenade) a 13 year old standing at 15hh. She was the dam of three progeny and first up was the athletic 7 year old purebred mare Jym-Aud Syriana (by Khouros (AU)), she is multi champion both in hand and under saddle. Fiona then bred JA Serene to a Welsh stallion, Mahogany Black Ice, and has two super derivatives as a result of these matings. The very attractive 3 year old grey Jym-Aud Dew Drop Mahogany, already a multi champion in hand. Her younger full sister, Jym Aud Mahogany Sun Rise, was a bay yearling. Last, but by no means least, was a bay 2 year old Anglo Arab gelding called Saruman (Burren-dah The Wizard (AU) x Bluegrass Amazing Grace (AU)). This boy has plenty of attitude and presence about him and will make an eye catching riding horse. Many thanks to Fiona and her family for inviting us to their property and allowing us to view a group of beautifully conditioned and turned out horses.
We all wandered down to the front paddock and spent some time admiring three pretty grey weanlings by the resident stallion Shaheen Al Saba (AU) (Thaqib Al Nasser x La Moniette) and out of SS Shula, Euralea Fire N Desire and CA Melika Silver Fire. Shaheen Al Saba (AU) was away being broken in and all reports are that he is progressing well which is great news. Again, I have to commend the condition and turnout of horses, it was excellent all day. A special thank you to Clayton Bazeley who, as always, put his best foot forward and presented horses for Fiona, Caitlin and Demelza. Sincere thanks to Nick and Demelza for their hospitality and welcoming us into their home for lunch. Thanks to everyone who helped with the meal which was really enjoyed by the 35 plus people who attended the stud tour. A super day all round and I am already looking forward to next year when we will get to see more Arabians that we may not have seen before. It is a “must do” if you are interested in the Arabian horse in NZ.
The entourage of cars set off again heading towards Mayfield. After turning back from a road closed sign and a couple of other detours we arrived at Demelza and Nick Hoogeveen’s dairy farm. The sun came out and we had a couple of super hours viewing horses and socialising. First up here were Caitlin Dalton’s two lovely show mares: Exspressa’ah RCA (Eastwinds Axiom (AU) x Nah-Tricia), 2013 SI Champion Mare & 2014 NZ National Top 5 Mare, and her 3 year old filly DTA Extreem Destinee (D’Amors Abdulla (AU) x Rayjan Demelza), 2014 CAHC Reserve Champion Filly & 2014 NZ National Top 3 Intermediate Filly. Thanks to Caitlin for her efforts as she had a long 2 hour float trip to get her horses to the farm and nearly missed our AGM as a result of this! We viewed the horses with a lovely backdrop of native trees and shrubs and I am sure with the cameras clicking there will be some great pics. Demelza’s horses were up next and they included the typey bay mare Suha DH and leased grey mare Euralea Fire N Desire. Star of the day for me was the super mare SS Shula (Simeon Shemini (AU) x Rula). She is the dam of 8 foals and it was such a pleasure to see her as her dam Rula had been presented with the WAHO award the previous day.

WAHO AWARD Rula RULA (Simeon Shomer (AU) x Seetha), born 27 October 1993, bred by Bev Jones and owned by Gerzanne Stud, is the recipient of the WAHO Award for 2014.
Rula was always rather “stand offish” until she fell in love - not with Simeon Shemini, but Dorsey our pet lamb - they were inseparable and Rula became very loving.
Gerzanne Stud is honoured to accept the prestigious 2014 WAHO Trophy presented to our beautiful old mare Rula. Rula is a fourth generation mare at Gerzanne and the last daughter at the Stud of Simeon Shomer (AU), grandson of the immortal El Shaklan. Rula has an impeccable pedigree with names like Tuhotmos, Bint Jehan, Gai Parada and Dresden featuring in her lineage.
During halter training for her first show with David Marshall - Dorsey did the “standup” and trotted out perfectly side by side with Rula.
Rula incorporates the bloodlines of three stallions imported into New Zealand by Gerzanne Stud Santarabia Shammar from Australia, Fakhr El Nil from the United Kingdom and Simeon Shomer also from Australia. On her dam line the Crabbet broodmare Robinia by Shafreyn out of Ruheym, imported from Australia as a foundation mare at the Stud. Certainly a wonderful blend of beautiful horses. Rula, having won many A Class Championships – is an Elite Roll of Merit recipient at Halter and Progeny. Rula has had 9 filly foals in a row – all full sisters – no colts – all by Simeon Shemini (AU) (Asfour x Simeon Shuala). They are listed below with their achievements: •
• • • • • •
• •
10
SS BINT SEETHA – 2001 NZ National Champion Filly and 2003 NZ National Champion Mare and Multi A Class Champion – plus Roll of Merit at Halter SS SHULA – South Island Champion Filly SS TALI – not shown SS SUKHA – Top Five Filly SS ARI – 2007 NZ National Champion Mare plus Multi A Class Champion SS SURI – 2007 NZ National Reserve Champion Filly SS ABIDA – an extremely rare Maximum Sabino filly – one of only 6 purebreds in the world according to Google. SS Abida or “Lilly” as we call her is “almost the perfect Arabian” – 2009 National Top Five Intermediate Filly SS SILAH – 2009 NZ National Top Five Junior Filly and 2011 NZ National Top Five Intermediate Filly SS SULA – 2013 NZ National Champion Intermediate Filly
Show day arrived - who came too - Dorsey. However on our return home the love affair ended the moment she stepped off the float. To this day we are not sure why, but perhaps it was Dorsey who turned Rula into the beautiful mother she became to her family of girls.
YOUNG ACHIEVER AWARD Ellenna Caudwell ELLENNA CAUDWELL of Pokeno is the recipient of the NZAHBS Brian Ross Young Achiever Award for 2014. Ellenna is 15 years old and has owned Windvale Faraz (Tahira Faris x Windvale Azleta) AKA Noah, since January 2012. When he arrived Noah was very unsure of people, we used to say he had special needs, now we call him very special. Noah was broken in very late (coming up to 9 years), ridden for several months before being turned out. When I first rode him I was told he had been out of work for around 6 months from his initial breaking in. His party trick was doing caprioles. In the two years since he arrived I have put in many hours of work and am now really starting to see the results. Here’s a list of some of the successes we have had. A&P Jumping: • Round the Ring Jumping – Franklin A&P February 2013, win and placings • Working Hunter – 2nd *** Waikato A&P Show 2013, Round the Ring Classes, win and placings • Working Hunter – Novice Reserve Champion Whangarei A&P December 2013 plus placings in Round the Ring classes • Working Hunter – 2nd *** Paeroa, both seconds were to the HOY 2013 Working Hunter Champion A&P Arabian Classes: Wins and placings at In Hand and Ridden classes at various shows including Franklin 2013, Waikato 2013, Reserve Champion Ridden Arabian Waihi A&P Show 2013, Whangarei 2013 2nd Open ridden Arab, 2nd Open Paced and Mannered (both seconds were to Charaway Hott Fudge). Arabian Spectacular: Winner of In Hand Classic Action it was really exciting winning this class against the overseas handlers. Many other wins and placings including Reserve Champion and runner up for the youth high points (I was told there was only 1 point difference). We competed in our first barrel race, went a bit too wide around the drums. As Noah is still unsure about the bells on the costumes I was lucky enough to be given the ride on Jakel in the Costume class, an amazing experience. I plan to work on a costume for Noah over winter. Dressage: We compete in ESNZ Registered Dressage and have qualified for Horse of the Year 2014, we will be competing in 3 Level 1 Pony classes. 12
April 2013 – Franklin District Pony Club 15 years and under Novice Reserve Dressage Champion. Eventing: We have won 2 out of the 10 ODEs/horse trials we have competed in, the Te Atatu ODE (95cm) in November 2012 and the Taupo Horse Trial (95cm) in September 2013. We qualified for Pony Club Area Trials in 2013 at training level (0.95cm) at the Area Trial that was combined for Franklin Thames Valley, Waitemata Rodney and Auckland Area Pony Clubs. We finished 4th overall from 24 combinations, we were 1st for my Pony Club Area – Franklin Thames Valley and as such we were selected to attend the New Zealand Pony Club Eventing Championships at Hastings in April 2013. Now we are competing at Pre Novice Horse Trials (1.05m cross country), and have qualified to compete at Area Trials in March 2014 at the 95cm level, we require 1 more qualifying score to trial at Pre Novice (1.05m) which I hope to achieve in February. Pony Club: I have obtained my C+ certificate riding Noah, and we are currently working towards our B Certificate. We attend Pony Club rallies at Pukekohe Pony Club most weeks during the season as well as our Pony Club camps where we enjoy hacking, jumping, games, swimming..... We are the 2013 Senior FEI (show jumping) Champions for the Franklin District Pony Club the courses were 1.15m high. Currently we are members of the Franklin Pony Club Show Jumping Development Squad as well as the Franklin Thames Valley Pony Club Eventing squad. Show Jumping: Currently we compete up to 1.15m in ESNZ registered show jumping, my aim is to compete at HOY up to 1.20m. At HOY 2013 as well as jumping in 1.05m classes we were selected to represent Franklin Thames Valley in the Pony Club Show Jumping Competition. This competition was held in the two main arenas, an amazing atmosphere, our team finished 4th after the first round (we went clear), and after the 2nd round FTV ended up in 6th place.
In October 2013 we competed in the Equidays Pony Derby, we were in 7th place after round 1 and finished 9th after the 2nd round. There were 34 entries, prizes included 3 motorbikes as well as money, giving over $12,000 in total prizes for the class, we finished ahead of many top New Zealand Grand Prix Show Jumping ponies. In mid January we represented Franklin District Pony Club at the North Island Pony Club Show Jumping Championships, there were 60 riders in the classes, we finished 4th in one class and our Franklin Pony Club Team finished 5th out of 30 teams.
As you can see we compete over many different disciplines, our favourite being eventing. It is really interesting how many comments we receive when we are out competing about the fact that Noah has some Arab blood. Most people are very surprised when I tell them he is a purebred. Many of the older riders then tell me about their favourite ponies that were Arabs. My plan is to carry on competing Noah, and next year start looking for a young hack possibly an Arabian Warmblood cross to carry on competing when I move from ponies.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Sue Spratt I am delighted to have nominated Sue Spratt for a Distinguished Service Award. Sue Spratt has already been honoured by the Society when she was elected as a Life Member. Sue at that stage had decided that she had done enough on Council and stood aside and we were all happy to see her join the small group who this Society have honoured as life members. This award today is more specifically to acknowledge Sue’s role in hosting a number of Annual Meetings in her area and stud visits to her home in Te Puke where we all enjoyed her wonderful hospitality and of course her time as co-ordinator of our National Show. Who can forget the glamorous dinner in the fabulously converted Orchard Cool Store when we dined and enjoyed a parade of Gerzanne Horses or the other times we visited after Annual Meetings to see progress at the stud. We were also privileged to be offered the use of the Gerzanne broodmare herd at our last major judges examination when Coralie Gordon was our examiner. Sue was unconcerned that her horses might be criticised in the process being more concerned that the candidate judges had a good range of animals to test them. Add to the hospitality we have enjoyed, the years Sue spent as Convenor of the National Show when it was held at her instigation at Cambridge Lodge, and what great shows they were. Sue made sure that the shows reflected the beauty and elegance of our breed and her introduction of the night session made each event special and exciting. Entertainment following the awarding of the championships was another innovation usually in fact sponsored by Sue along with Bev Jones. With the help and support of her family and Bev Jones, Sue Spratt has made Arabian Horses her passion and has spent most of her adult life working to improve the breed. From the small beginning of one stallion the stud today numbers some forty or more stallions, mares and young stock of international quality. Sue’s work for the Society, the Breed and her own Stud is to be applauded and we salute her work and passion in giving this award. Kevin Cholmondeley-Smith

NEW ZEALAND BREEDER AWARD Jan Wilson - Rayjan Arabians Rayjan Arabians has produced only one foal born this past season, a filly, Rayjan Khandi (CRA Sihr Shahrif (US) x Rayjan Heiress). In a short space of time Khandi made quite an impact, South Island Junior Champion Filly and NZAHBS National Champion Junior Filly. She has since been sold to the North Island and we wish the new owners the very best of luck with her. CRA Sihr Shahrif (US) does not have a huge number of progeny but they are making a statement as to his ability as a super sire. Since 2010 nine progeny have amassed 16 Champions & Reserves and 1 Supreme Champion at NZAHBS Championship shows including Nationals. We were fortunate to have had Bremervale Pocohontas (AU) as our foundation sire, his daughters provided the platform on which we built, and they have proved to be an amazing cross with CRA Sihr Shahrif (US). There is not a lot I can say about what we are producing here, the progeny and the results speak for themselves, if one cares to look it is obvious they can say it all a lot better than I can write.
There is plenty more to come, the performance ring beckons. The youngsters we are breeding are gems to work with and we are looking forward to seeing some out under saddle in the not so distant future. As breeders, performance under saddle has always been our passion. We try to breed a good looking horse that has the functionality and temperament to be the complete versatile Arabian. Monese Ball's beautiful Rayjan Heath would be a perfect example: National Champion Senior Gelding & Novice Ridden Purebred & Reserve National Champion Ridden Purebred Male plus Supreme National Champion Purebred Exhibit – all in 1 day. It doesn't get much better than that! We are very honoured that these young horses earned us the NZAHBS Breeder of the Year Award.

STALLION PROFILE Shaheen Al Saba (AU)
Shaheen Al Saba, bred by Saba Arabians in Australia, combines the famed Ansata Halim Shah/Prince Fa Moniet cross and is the only Thaqib Al Nasser progeny in New Zealand. Purchased by Desert Heritage Arabians as a foal on his mother, Shaheen is now 6 years old and has been shown only three times for North Island Champion Junior Colt/Filly (unanimously under three judges), NZ National Champion Junior Colt and NZ National Champion Stallion. Shaheen has a small number of foals on the ground; he seems to add his beauty to his foals without obliterating the strong points of their dams. He is now being started under saddle and is proving to be an intelligent pupil. We hope to have him competing as a ridden horse in the near future. ELITE ROLL OF MERIT Jazz JAZZ (E’Arlia Jarim x Early Riser), 14 year old Anglo Arabian Gelding bred by Kelaray Stud - owned, exhibited and ridden by Kristie Thomas. Jazz was the first Derivative in New Zealand to be awarded a Roll of Merit at Halter from the NZAHBS in 2011. He is now the first Derivative to receive his Performance Roll of Merit and consequently an Elite Roll of Merit. Jazz is a very consistent and successful show horse. After purchasing him from Kelaray Stud as a 6 year old, where he had already been awarded numerous titles, Kristie and Jazz have had an incredible partnership winning 166 Supreme, Champion and Reserve Champion sashes. Jazz is a multiple Supreme Champion Arabian/ Derivative at Halter, including Supreme Champion NZ Horse of the Year, North Island Champion, and NZ National Reserve Champion Gelding, along with many Championship and Supreme wins at Arabian shows and A&P Shows.
Jazz is also a multiple Supreme Champion and Champion Ridden Arabian/Derivative, including the 2013 NZ National Champion Ridden Derivative Male and North Island Champion Ridden Male (multiple times). He has also been awarded the NZ National Reserve Champion Derivative Dressage title, NZ National Reserve Champion Costume (twice), and is a Champion Arabian at Liberty. Outside of the Arabian world he is a multiple Champion Park Hack, Paced and Mannered Horse, Led Horse, Versatility Horse and Champion Rider Mount, having competed at the Horse of the Year Show. Jazz (Bud) is a fantastic competition horse, who has a wonderful laid back temperament and a great personality. He is a once in a lifetime horse and an absolute pleasure to own and show.

Five ponies and riders turned up on the day, each was issued with a numbered saddle blanket and lined up for a standing start. The winning margin was a nose and all crossed the finish line within a metre of each other. All the riders had a great time, the crowd loved it, and the organising committee are looking to run another race next year.

STUD NEWS El Kheir Arabians
Just recently we have purchased the beautiful Straight Egyptian mare CHASWYCK ALIAH (AU) (Chaswyck Ace of Spades x Joda Alana), from Fanus & Ria Crous of Rhodium Stud. To us Aliah (pictured below) has the grace and structure we so admire in an Arabian mare. She is also a mare of incredible athletic function - boasting a mighty powerful trot. Full of snort and blow, yet gentle and sweet, this dream mare is a lovely addition to our small, select group, of Straight Egyptian mares. Only ever shown twice for two Reserve National Titles, we will bring her out next show season. WILLOWVALE EXQUIZITE was recently sold to Anne-Marie Garcia. We wish her all the best with this beautiful black Arabian mare and thanks to everyone who showed interest in her, but missed out. TARALEA ALLEGREE recently passed away from old age. Such a sweet natured mare, and great 'nanny' to weaned foals. She will be sadly missed. NORA (AU) (Akid Geshan x Arabian Park Devotion) our straight Egyptian mare who is the dam of our RNZ Halite and El Kheir Saraana, is back in foal to Simeon Saraaf (AU). We so hope to get anther filly as gorgeous as Saraana. Allan & Cheryl Skinner, El Kheir Arabians

VALE: RANAARB (AU), 1987-2013 Rasham (Greylight x Sparkle) x Liquid Amber (Mutlak x Electric Amber) Chestnut Pure Crabbet Arab Stallion, aged 26 years - a very classic Crabbet Arabian with a really neat personality – he has left some lovely progeny in NZ. Ranaarb had been struggling to maintain his weight for a few months and when we checked his teeth, found they were very worn. He also had other health issues and so we made the decision to have him put to sleep before winter. He had served outside mares in the two years previous but he didn’t get anything in foal and we assumed he was infertile, so one day Stu had ‘a rush of blood to the head’….lol, and decided he would put all the broodmares in with Ranaarb to keep him company over summer and if anything got in foal it would be a bonus. Well,,,, something did get in foal, 2 of our mares in fact got in foal and they foaled within 2 days of each other at the end of October 2013. It sure was a wonderful surprise to find we had 2 mares in foal and a really neat bonus gift from the old boy. The foals are just beautiful too, and with the typical trademark Ranaarb natures – very friendly and love attention. We have a gorgeous scopey grey filly and a very smart chestnut colt – both are excellent quality and it’s quite likely we will keep the colt entire as he is the very very last foal and is a pretty boy with lovely clean straight legs, good conformation and balance – will see how he grows out. We very much appreciated the opportunity to have Ranaarb on lease since 2000 from his owner Greg Prowse. It was intended that Ranaarb go back to Australia at some stage, but with Greg being very busy and Australia having a few years of drought conditions, it just didn’t happen, so we were very lucky to keep him in NZ. His progeny have been doing really well under saddle and especially in endurance with three in Malaysia and one just recently exported to Australia, plus many doing well for their owners in NZ. We have a neat little story about Ranaarb: He had been in NZ well over 5 years when his owner Greg was visiting Auckland for 2-3 weeks to do some supervising work on a large building project. Greg came down to Tirau to see his horse – we enjoyed his visit and took him down to see Ranaarb. At first there was no recognition and I said to Greg “speak to him” (all our horses know our voices), Well……!! What a reaction…!! Ranaarb lunged at Greg who threw his arm up and yelled at Ranaarb, telling
him to get back, then Greg said “that’s better, now you can come back to me quietly” which the horse did, and he very carefully grabbed a small piece of Greg’s shirt in his teeth and just held onto it for quite some time. I was really amazed…..Ranaarb has never done this to us or anyone else in all the 13 years he has been with us. Greg said “Oh he always used to do this with me, just stand holding onto me for ages” – it was really touching to see this, and Ranaarb definitely hadn’t forgotten Greg in the 5 plus years he had been in NZ – we always knew Ranaarb was very intelligent, he obviously had a great memory too. We hadn’t bred any foals for 3 years during the economic downturn, plus we also had quite a few youngsters already, so no point adding to the numbers. However during the last 1-2 years we’ve sold eight of our young horses – two by Ranaarb went to our friend Peter (Presco Endurance) in Singapore/Malaysia, Delights Tardis and Delights Siren are settling in and have already done several 40km rides. We sold a very nice young mare by Delights Wahid to Ursula Keenan & Chris Enstrom in Christchurch (for breeding & Endurance) and a 7/8 gelding by Ranaarb x Impy (Stu’s old endurance mare) to Ashley Cole, Raetahi, for Endurance. At the end of August Peter Tan and his family, plus friends from Australia, visited and stayed with us for a few days to view young horses to purchase for endurance competition in Australia, as Presco Endurance has now become more involved with endurance there. Peter likes our horses and their proven National & International Endurance bloodlines. They chose four of our geldings, one by Ranaarb and three by Delights Wahid. The horses travelled to Australia in November and are gradually settling into their new home. The oldest three are currently being broken in to ride and we’re keeping fingers crossed they will do OK. Seeing as we’ve sold horses and will be moving to a larger farm property, we decided to put a couple of mares to the stallion this season, so Delights DJ Zarif is enjoying the company of mares again – pretty sure we will have three mares in foal which is probably more than enough. Big changes are coming up for us during March, as we sold our small Maize & Dairy support farm here in Tirau (but retaining 25 acres) and we’re purchasing a large drystock farm near Taumarunui. We were drystock farming in Wairarapa before we moved to Tirau in 2001 and Stu has been keen to get back onto a larger farm again for the last four years. He’s looking forward to riding the horses again as part of running the farm – he will need to use horses and his working dogs on the new farm, and he might even do some Endurance rides again. News from us is well overdue – I intended to write a Vale for Ranaarb (AU) quite a few months ago! Time just goes so quickly and since Ranaarb was sent over the Rainbow Bridge we’ve shifted (with another shift coming up), sold 4 geldings overseas for Endurance and had 2 gorgeous surprise foals, so I guess we have a little more news now anyway.

LAMINITIS - A WARNING “In Memory of Gazaalia” by Kaye Pinches Moving to a new country is not something to be undertaken lightly and we thought we had done our homework. What we didn’t take into account were grazing problems. This is a story of our experience and I hope it may help others new to New Zealand to avoid the heartache we suffered. When we arrived from the UK we were lucky enough to have stables we could use for the horses when they arrived. Once we had found our new property we moved the horses onto to it and they had a divided barn as temporary accommodation, where they were quite happy, until their permanent stableblock was finished. At the first yard it was noticeable that grass was not very plentiful in the small paddocks we were using and so lucerne was put out every day. I thought this was odd as I understood that October was the equivalent of Spring in the UK and had expected to see good grass. Never mind, we were under cover in the stables and the rain was very heavy when it came. The horses were in prime condition and I had no worries except that the rugs were still on the boat coming over! The weather improved before Christmas and we moved into our own property just before the holiday. The grass looked good and, again, no worries. Our own barn/stables was completed in July and the horses settled into yet another routine, this time in their permanent new home. Perfect (we thought). My first mistake was to assume that the grass was of poor quality (compared with UK). It went brown very quickly and when it was warm we had to irrigate every day to try and keep it green and growing. In the UK the mares had unlimited daily access to 4 acres of lush green grass. Never mind, the horses were having two small feeds per day, as in UK, and I had been introduced to Copra to help keep the weight on. Gwinny (Gwinivere (GB)), my foundation mare, always put on weight easily but the first year here she was put in foal and everything looked fine. She gave birth to a very healthy colt in January the following year and her weight looked ideal. My second mistake was to keep feeding as I had in the UK with copra in addition. Not large feeds, to me they were an embarrassment and were only given to salve my conscience. The weight started creeping up and seeing them every day I didn’t notice it. A judge mentioned that Gazaalia (SA Gazaalia (GB)) was a bit fat and that I should watch her weight. I cut the feed back a bit and thought that should do it. Wrong again. Then the farrier mentioned that Gwinny and Gazaalia were both a bit overweight 24
so I cut out one feed and reduced the other. Still no weight loss! Then I cut out the copra. That helped a bit but not much. Rooh (SA Rooh Al Reeh (GB)), the stallion was fine but he had lots of libido and never stood still. The youngest mare, Jazz (SA Jazaaria (GB)), seemed to be OK, but she was still growing at four years of age. Again, she never stood still. The next step was to stop feeding entirely, which I did, but although they did lose some weight, not enough. The hay in the stable was reduced. A bit more weight was coming off and I hoped we were over the worst so I relaxed a bit. What I forgot about was the spring growth in the grass, understandable as we were experiencing rotten weather. This was my third and fatal mistake. We had had such a wet winter that I didn’t realise the grass would be so much richer. With all the wind and the rain I was more concerned about keeping them dry with rugs on so I missed the weight gain. I had started to work with Gwinny and I would try and lunge her every day in the round pen but the gales had brought trees down, some into the round pen, and I was stuck with muddy paddocks, so the lunging had to stop for the time being. Fortunately the paddocks were not affected by tree-fall so the horses could still graze. I first noticed that Gwinny was a bit stiff and then, the day the farrier was due, she was very sore. He said he thought it was laminitis and wouldn’t trim her as it might make things worse. I called the vet in and Gwinny was put on bute, stabled all the time and the hay had to be soaked. I was advised to buy some “rubbish” hay which I did and it was definitely rubbish with bits of branches and goodness knows what else. I duly soaked it and fed it to all the mares (thinking it easier to avoid problems in the others by treating them all the same as Gwinny). The only grazing the two unaffected mares had was mornings in the small paddock outside their stables. Ten days later Gazaalia was sore footed too, despite the measures I had taken. She was worse than Gwinny and it happened much more quickly. Her feet were x-rayed and the off-fore was diagnosed with a rotated pedal bone. The left fore had also rotated but very slightly. The farrier advised us to purchase some special rubber boots to give her relief and we hoped that this would give the condition chance to stabilise and then remedial shoeing would help to resolve the lameness and rotation. Now both horses were stable bound and on bute. Gwinny improved slowly and I was able to cut down on the medication. Eventually the fencing around
The vet gave me a few hours to spend with her before the end, which I was grateful for. We managed to get her out to a patch of grass, which she was delighted with, not having grazed for almost three months. It did take us 45 minutes to move her the twenty-four feet necessary to reach the grass, this was despite tempting her with carrots. It was only when she saw the grass through the open door that she was motivated to make the extra effort.
Her last hours were happy and the sun shone on her. She was a beautiful and kind mare, the best I had ever bred. I cherish the years and pleasure she gave me. Rest in peace Gazaalia. My sincere thanks go to Canterbury Equine for their help and compassion and also to Grant Nihan for his invaluable advice and kindness. They all helped me through a painful and fraught experience that I would not wish upon anyone. The following information is based upon what I have learnt through this tragedy and is for those who may not be aware of how rich New Zealand grass is. If your horse is overweight make sure that their access to grass is limited. Graze in the morning if you think there might be a problem, the fructins (sugars) in the grass are lower then. They rise sharply after lunch. Feed only soaked hay, soaked for a minimum of three hours but longer if possible. Restrict grazing after rain, again the fructins are high. If you cut your own hay ensure it is cut first thing in the morning to lessen the amount of sugar the finished hay contains. Avoid feeding anything containing molasses. Try and exercise the horses (riding or lunging) every day to help with keeping the weight at bay. If my words help only one horse to escape the affliction of laminitis this article will have been worth writing. Kaye Pinches (Sandpiper Arabians)
ARABIANZ january-June 2014
the schooling pen was repaired and I was able to lunge her for about ten minutes a day. Things were looking better for her but Gazaalia just didn’t improve, despite the boots, which had to be washed every other day. I would let her feet breath for about an hour whilst they dried and then put them back on. She had a fairly deep shavings bed with a rubber floor under so she did have something soft to stand on when she wasn’t wearing the boots. Then one day she would not pick up her good front foot (always did that one first so she was wearing the boot on the bad foot and it wouldn’t hurt so much). I looked at the bad foot, which she would give me, and I noticed what looked like knobbly shavings on the sole. I was horrified as I had been reading up on laminitis and learned that the pedal bone could penetrate the sole in bad cases. It had done just that! The vet came and agreed that the prognosis was not good but we should x-ray the feet and see just what might be possible. The xrays were duly taken and it was found that the pedal bone in the good foot had also begun to rotate. This meant that it would not support the bad foot whilst it tried to repair and produce a new sole but would deteriorate to the same state, leaving no support at all for the front of the body. She would be in incredible pain with little to no likelihood of recovery. The consensus of opinion was that there was no option but euthanasia. My world fell apart.

REQUIREMENTS The self-carbonated Application for Registration forms will be discontinued as they do not comply with the current registration regulations. Updated Purebred & Derivative registration forms are being created and will be available to download from the NZAHBS website soon. In the meantime – please continue to use the self-carbonated forms as follows: • The Stallion Owner must complete and sign the Service Certificate. • The Mare Owner (breeder) must complete and sign the Dam Owner’s Certificate, Mare Return & Markings. • A qualified Veterinary Surgeon must sign off on the identity of the foal – there is no box for this on the self-carbonated form – please have them sign above the horse diagrams. • Please ensure that all whorls are noted on the application form with an ‘X’.
Horses born from 1 August 2012 must now be branded AND/OR microchipped for identification. Previous rules surrounding this: • Horses born prior to 31 July 2007 - branding compulsory • Horses born from 1 August 2007 to 31 July 2012 - branding optional • Horses born from 1 August 2012 - to be branded AND/OR microchipped
Current Purebred Registration fees: Geldings $59.50, Fillies $197.50 (includes DNA typing fee), Colts $472.50 (includes DNA typing fee).
7
If you have a Colt that you are undecided whether to geld or not an extension can be given until 1 November at which time he must be registered as a Colt or Gelding and the relevant fee paid.
A registered colt is eligible for a gelding refund on production of a gelding certificate if he is gelded before 2 years of age, has not covered any mares & is still owned by the breeder.
Please contact the office if you have any questions regarding registrations or require an extension of time due to extenuating circumstances.
