PRESIDENT’S REPORT Letter to Members NZAHBS (Inc) – July 2012 This letter is to acquaint you with how things are progressing with our Society. Some of you attended the AGM in Tauranga and were treated to a great day out on the Sunday when we visited Kim Cawte’s Candy Lodge, Anne Marie Garcia’s Byzance Arabians and Gerzanne Stud courtesy of Sue Spratt and Bev Jones. Your 2012 Council consists of: Kevin CholmondeleySmith - President, Alison Steward - Vice President, Alan Skinner - Treasurer, Councillors: Melanie Barker, Fanus Crous, Melville Gubb, Demelza Hoogeveen and Mark Milmine. All of us are approachable and keen to assist you with any problems and to listen to any positive ideas you may have to improve the promotion of our breed and the manner in which we manage the Society. Our contact details are attached. Our National Office remains in Cust, Fiona McLachlan is our Secretary. Fiona will answer the phone and our queries Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays except weeks when there is Council Meeting when these hours may vary. Up-to-date information will be on the answer phone if the hours change. The hard facts are that our Breed and many other breeds have been adversely affected by the financial downturn but in the case of the Arabian possibly more so than most as we also at times deal with bad publicity about a breed that we know to be loved by many but misunderstood by many more. You hear it all the time, when a horse plays up it must be an Arab or is demonstrating ‘Arab’ behaviour, we hear our breed is only good for twirling round on a lead and maybe we have perpetuated this perception by the very way we enjoy showing our horses. In other words there is work to be done to turn around the way others see our horses before we can in turn regain the lost ground and enjoy better sales and more followers. So how do we do this, while I have some ideas I am only one voice in the community, we must all come together without bickering or in fighting and work tirelessly as we rebuild the reputation of this unique breed of horse and its place in New Zealand today. To rely on the endurance sport as a mop up for our geldings is short sighted. Dare I say it but the prices paid for our stock off the farm by endurance riders has never been high, as one would expect endurance riders buy in stock to add value and to make their own profits should they sell these horses on to other markets. Each of us in this situation would naturally buy for the best possible price. What we are looking for is a market that at least allows breeders to recoup a good level of their costs but preferably to make a decent margin to allow them to continue to breed Arabian Horses. 6

The markets that are still very active in New Zealand are those where horses do dressage and jump and our breed has had very few stars in those disciplines. In fact there are some even within our ranks who believe Arabian horses are not suited to dressage or to jumping. I have some ideas how we can turn these unfounded opinions round and you will hear more of this later this year. Meanwhile I would like to hear from anyone who has or who has had horses Pure or Partbred which have excelled at Dressage or Show Jumping and to receive photos of those horses. Of course as with any breed it is the good ones that customers seek and it is up to each of us to ensure we breed good sane sound attractive horses that will adapt to whatever role we think they can fulfil. We must not be afraid to cull and to cut and be careful to never perpetuate major faults of temperament or conformation. NATIONAL SHOWS I am delighted to announce that the National Show will next be held in Taranaki and hosted by the Taranaki Club. Show dates will be Friday 25th and Saturday 26th January 2013. Full details of the venue, stabling, classes etc will be available from the Taranaki Club soon. The name of the Judge approved by Council will be in an upcoming issue of “Arabianz”. We also awarded the next South Island Show to a group led by Tracey Rhodes who will hold that show in Christchurch. Each of these groups are to look after all the financial management of the shows without recourse to any Society funding. A standard minimum schedule will be approved for National Title Shows and host groups must use this schedule as a template for their event but are allowed to add classes that might be suitable to their own area. The approval of and/or the appointment of the judges for National events remains with Council but nominations will be accepted from any affiliated club or full member and be given due consideration. NORTH & SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS Several applications to host these championships were tabled and while the Council have identified suitable hosts the Secretary has been instructed to seek further information from each applicant to enable a hosting decision to be completed. PETER UPTON PAINTINGS Most of you will know that our Patron Peter Upton the renowned Painter, Author, Arabian Horse Breeder and Judge donated three valuable paintings to our Society. There have been differing opinions as to how we should manage this gift however the Council have now quite rightly seen these paintings as part of our heritage and are having them valued, properly insured and added to our asset

DERIVATIVE REGISTER Our current IT contractor has generously offered to write for the Society at no cost a program to manage the expanded Derivative register which with a 12 ½ percentage of blood allowed is complex but exciting as it allows us to welcome many more horses and ponies into our ranks and we hope to our shows. Meanwhile we are currently accepting horses and ponies that meet the criteria into this register and can issue the cards as and when required. Please note the onus is on owners to bring proof of blood forward at the time of applying for registration. Hearsay will not be good enough. ARABIANZ The production of our magazine has been identified as one of the main causes of our sinking funds as until last year most issues lost money. The Council last year set in place rules round the production of the magazine that meant it was only published when it would cut even, however this means each issue is fraught with indecision and a better solution was necessary. Consequently your current Council have decided to publish a monthly electronic newsletter which can go ahead regardless of the amount of content and advertising without further losses. Those of you without email can request a photocopy. There will be little difference in the presentation of the electronic magazine to the printed version you have received in the past however with copies to be sent out monthly news will be current. The content as always depends on your input. ROLL OF MERIT The roll of merit when it was launched was a great idea towards recognising the achievements of very good or exceptional Arabian Horses. However the numbers of shows and events whereby horses can accumulate points have dwindled and no matter how Council manipulate the points some believe we are thereby diminishing the achievements of past awardees. Therefore it is possible a new possibly parallel awards system should be developed and your ideas and feedback is welcome in this regard. The announcement that a Derivative Roll will be instigated stands. REGISTRATION Council have recognised the futility of budgeting without all the necessary information to hand. For example without the mare and stallion returns of the past Council have no idea of how many registrations might appear each year and therefore have a big question mark over any predictions of how your Society can remain viable each calendar year. Therefore Mare and Stallion Returns will be issued immediately and will be again a responsibility of all members. Returns are enclosed for members to complete and return for the 2011/2012 breeding season.

BRANDING Branding or the lack of branding has been an issue with many members; Councils over the years have found branding a last resort when identifying horses and are aware that the numbering identifying system required by Government to manage disease control will inevitably be applied to all domestic animals. Already cattle and soon sheep will be formally identified and have movement control in place. Council have therefore been proactive in reintroducing the requirement to brand. This regulatory change is effective immediately and will apply to all foals not already registered. Freeze Branding is the preferred option of Council. INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS FOR EQUESTRIAN PASSPORTS Over the past two years Arabian Horses have been travelling to Australia for competitions at shows or endurance events. This involves a great deal of unnecessary paper work and at times a need to join the Society in Australia which is added expense. Your Council are therefore in negotiation with other sovereign organisations to smooth the way for this type of travel. JUDGES It has been recognised that we have a serious shortage of Judges in New Zealand and if we want to increase our breed presence at A & P Shows we must move to add names to our list. A letter will shortly go out to all Grade One RAS Judges inviting them to join our panel. These people if interested will be supplied with a copy of our breed standard and then be asked to sit a simple examination based on that standard to ensure they understand exactly what they will be judging. We will licence those who are interested and who pass our exam to judge purebreds and derivatives at A & P Shows and ridden classes at all shows. FINANCIAL It is no secret to Members who have carefully studied the balance sheets of the past few years that the Society funds and ability to remain solvent has been at risk. There have been a number of contributing factors one of which I outlined above when talking to you about the magazine. Last year Council recognised the seriousness of our situation and moved to make considerable savings however this was not enough if we wish to maintain a National Office and ensure a future for our Society. At the AGM Dinner never one to hide bad news I advised Members that austerity and some price rises were inevitable and of course this caused consternation. The first move was to abolish subsidies for Council Travel meaning that the current Councillors who are working on your behalf all pay their own way to get to Council Meetings. The individual Councillors contribution to turning things around is therefore considerable and means that Councillors are effectively subsidising the fees of all Members. Proper budgeting is another requirement and I have explained that mare and stallion returns will take much of the guess work out of this exercise. However reluctantly Council have had to review the current fees and have made the following changes.

ARABIANZ September 2012

register. It is our intention to keep these paintings in our ownership but to use them for display and the promotion of our breed when and where ever appropriate.

MEMBERSHIP Membership Fees remain as before but will be reviewed annually in November prior to the end of each Financial year. PUREBRED REGISTRATIONS All Purebred Colts, Fillies and Gelding fees increase by $25 each from 1st August 2012. An updated “Scale of Fees” is enclosed. DERIVATIVE REGISTRATIONS The change within our system to allow registration of horses with lower percentages of Arabian Blood obviously allows many older horses to join us. Council are still deliberating how this can be achieved fairly given the fees paid by those who have already registered derivative horses. We want to encourage registrations but we do not want to disadvantage those people who have been faithfully recording horses for many years. An announcement will be made soon on the fee structure for derivatives, in the meantime the usual fees apply. FUND RAISING Refer to “Council Updates & Portfolio Reports”. THANK YOU Finally, let me thank all those who have given me hope for the future of our breed, I am delighted to find that the majority of owners are optimists and understand the situation we have found ourselves in.

We want to maintain a professional National Office and give members value for their money. We want to rebuild the reputation of our breed, introduce training seminars for breeding and showing which will include every aspect of running studs, presentation, early training for led and training for ridden activities including jumping. Our wish list includes a push to increase our exposure by bringing the breed back to A & P Shows without placing a financial burden on or hosts instead of continually showing to each other at our specialty shows and informed articles published in national magazines via a publicity drive assisted by human interest stories. I have to say that our plans for survival in the short term and our vision for the future have not pleased everyone and Council have received a number of critical letters that I will personally reply to this month. All these letters were written without full knowledge of how Council were going to deal with the financial crisis and how we saw the future. I hope what I have written herein has clearly set out how your Council will govern in this term and set your minds at rest that you are served by a dedicated bunch of people who are working hard for all the right reasons. We are all open to your ideas and assistance, please speak up we would rather hear what you have to say directly than later or by the bush telegraph. Warm wishes. Kevin Cholmondeley-Smith, President

Members who do not have internet access will be sent a black & white photocopy of the magazine each month - please contact the Office if you would like to be added to this list.

Council has reintroduced the requirement for compulsory Branding of Purebreds, with immediate effect.

FROM THE MAIL BAG Kristie Thomas & Jazz (E’Arlia Jairim (AU) x Early Riser (TB)) with Judge Claude Avent at the 2012 Kumeu Royal Show after winning Champion Led Derivative Arabian & Champion Ridden Derivative Arabian (LEFT)

Linda Pullar & Kishon Fashamatazz (Milands Royal Fashion x Midnight Majestic) (BELOW LEFT)

My wonderful part Arab mare Kishon Fashamatazz passed away on Easter Monday after competing in the 2 star event at Hawarden. She had successfully clocked up 4000kms over her 16 years and had a great 2011/12 season bringing her young rider Olivia through to open status. Fashamatazz was born on Guy Fawkes Day being the last offspring of ours sired by the popular stallion Milands Royal Fashion.

With only two pages left in her 3rd log book I planned to take her around the course with no pressure of winning but the day turned out very hot and she must have dehydrated. With her photo on my wall in the lounge alongside her certificate of merit I will never forget her and the pleasure she gave to so many people. Linda Pullar - Kishon Arabians

ARABIANZ September 2012

Although Fashamatazz was a grumpy mare you couldn't help loving her. She didn't like being fussed over but loved her work and always tried her best. Over the years she helped many young riders to build their confidence up and completed two 160km rides and won me a trip to South Africa at the Horse of the Year Show in 2007.

“Brilliant! Galloping out of remotest antiquity, prancing majestically at mankind’s most fabled royal courts, in an awe-inspiring destiny siring all lineages of racing’s thoroughbreds as well as the mounts for Napolean’s lancers and Gustavus Adolphus’ “Polish-Arabs”, the “Gift from the Desert the gorgeously enchanting star of this wondrous film.

“At this moment when tragic images bombard us nightly from the Middle East, one of our world’s most expert film-makers has launched a star into our sadly darkened sky. Gift from the Desert chronicles an all too rare interaction with the Arab world whereby 19/20th century U.S. breeders helped to “save” this splendid breed. For joy as well as useful wisdom come and view this beautiful film !” ~ DR. CARNEY GAVIN, Historian
