As we rapidly approach the end of the financial year, I am able to draw on a few statistics that are very encouraging regarding the health of the Institute: In the last twelve months we have signed up seventy-two new members, with eight of those signing in the last two months. Twenty members have achieved their ‘Q’s and over fifty have become ‘Accredited’. As we become larger we also become stronger and have a greater influence in raising the standard of Professional Photography in the country. By becoming accredited we are offering the photography buying public a standard that they can rely on and believe in, so make sure you secure you accreditation points before the financial year ends and the point allocation reverts back to zero. It’s up to you as a member to make sure that you stand out from all those photographers who haven’t yet achieved their accreditation. This standard is there to help you with your marketing and to ensure that everyone knows that you are of this standard.

“ DEMISE OF PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY” NO THANKS NOT TODAY! I hope you have had a great month. It seems as if the year has finally wound up to its much-needed potential. In my research for some words of wisdom to offer in this issue of Pro Report I thought I would ask Mr. Google “What is the state of Commercial Photography”. Some interesting results, however loved this one http://rising.blackstar.com/ reality-check-professional-photography-is-going-away.html in particular the comments, The over riding feed back to this article was however, that we are in an ever evolving state and that we need to be better at what we do more than ever before. This in order to create a clear distinction between our skill level and the person standing behind you with a point and shoot. Asking the great cyber based guru (Google) “how” or “what” seems to have become quite normal. Being someone who hates reading instruction books and manuals, I quite often find myself stuck on a software problem, however there always seems to be someone who has had the same problem or question and has posted solutions. Of course if you’re still stuck there is always a YouTube video clip on whatever the subject! Are you a NZIPP Qualified Commercial Photographer? In 2012 only 4 photographers gained a new commercial “Q”. Out of 72 current members who have their commercial Q, only 41 have ticked the commercial specialty which appears in the “Find a Photographer “ function. Did you know that you can apply for your “Q” in any area that you work. Some greedy (but clever) members have got their Q in Commercial, Portait and Wedding! So just go for it… How to price a 10x8 If you went to the Infocus 2012 conference in Christchurch you would have seen Peter Eastway’s seminar on “Pricing Your Business”. This was awesome, and Peter has been kind enough to lend me his slide show and work papers. I have added licencing and contracts to this and will be presenting to NZIPP regions that have sufficient interest. Let your regional chair or committee know if you are interested. READY, SET, Q! So you’ve been a provisional member for a while and now you’re ready to go for your Q…..or are you? A little time to make sure you tick all the boxes can save you from the disappointment of not passing & having to resubmit. Here is some simple tips, things to keep in mind & check off before submitting. •

Try to step back & look at your images and separate your best images from your favorite images. All to often an image will be our favorite for a reason we draw from it, but its not necessarily our best image.

Go along to a Q workshop and put your images up for some feedback. If there isn’t a Q workshop on the horizon for your region, let me know & I will make sure I come & do one or help you organise one.

Join the Q Try Hards Facebook group. This is a great way to get feedback. Just keep in mind that not everyone giving you feedback in the group has their Q so make sure your getting advice from people in the know.

Print your images & stick them on a wall, look at them left, right, upside down, up close, far away & with a critical eye.

Keep in mind that loving an image doesn’t mean it’s the right image for your Q. Sometimes we let an emotional connection to an image over rule our judgment (guilty!).

Pay careful attention to the printing of your images

Keep in mind that your style doesn’t have to be like everyone elses, you can show your individuality, your style & what you shoot. But it still has to be correctly exposed, well executed & show the necessary skill level.

So with all of that in mind here is what a Q image should be…. •

Subjects look relaxed and comfortable

Photographer appears to have established good rapport

Poses are varied & flattering

Colour is consistent, skin tones are realistic

Print quality

Composition; images are balanced & demonstrate an understanding of the principles of good composition

Distracting elements are not evident

Cropping is appropriate

Lighting; light is controlled & used appropriately

Exposure; images are well exposed with well controlled highlights & appropriate detail in the dark areas

Black & white images have good tonality & contrast

Post production; finishing is appropriate & doesn’t distract from the images

Right, now you know what you need your images to be, go get them! And remember if you need any help or feedback, there are lots of places to find that help.

I love the Sunscreen Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5NAPZp2w-o) …it’s all really, really good advice. I thought maybe it’s that point in the season when we need a photographers version and maybe it would go something like this… •

Charge your batteries, literally and metaphorically

Look at something other than photographers on Facebook

Organise your favourite pages into lists on Facebook so you see the stuff you want to see

Shoot something you want to shoot that no one is paying you for

If something isn’t working change something

Be confident in your pricing (or at least practice sounding confident)

Be deliberate about the business model you choose…be high touch, high cost or low touch, low cost but choose it deliberately

The phone will ring, the emails will come…don’t discount

The race is long…and it won’t be won (or lost) today

Back up your stuff…well only the stuff you want to keep

Share the NZIPP love and invite another photographer to your next meeting

Do your GST on time

Submit for the Q you’ve been meaning to do forever and ever

Go outside when it’s sunny

Step away from the computer

Smile. Breathe. Repeat.

Honours Council Report

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” Margaret Wolfe Hungerford (1878) The literal meaning of the above quote is given as “the perception of beauty is subjective” (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/beauty-is-in-the-eye-ofthe-beholder.html). To expand further I’d like to relate this quote to the way we decide on the prints we enter into the awards or submit for the scrutiny of a Q assessment. Usually, this becomes a process of elimination that relies on us selecting examples we believe represent our best work, based on: •

past experience and knowledge of having our work peer critiqued

our photographic knowledge and experience

Ultimately, the decisions we make are subjective. Just as the way in which a mother will view photographs of her children, if they are not perfect she will likely still love them because she has an emotional connection to the content. Similarly, we form an emotional connection to the images we make and it becomes hard to view them objectively, as a judge would do. It is only through seeking and receiving feedback from others that we learn to view our own work in a more objective light. With this in mind, I would encourage intending awards entrants to participate in the critique and prejudging sessions being held by many of the NZIPP Regions, prior to making their final decision. These sessions provide a valuable opportunity to gain insight based on the opinion of others, allowing time to fine-tune images prior to submission. You may also like to develop and use a checklist that will help identify the qualities a Judge will be looking for within an image. You may want to use some of the following questions, and even a rating system with these, to assess an image and then take steps to remedy or improve them. •

What level of feeling, mood and/or emotion is being conveyed in the image?

Is there a recognisable story or narrative within the image?

What level of inventiveness/innovation comes through in the image, or is it repeating something that has already been seen?

Does the image reflect good choice and control of lighting?

Are there any elements within the image that appear distracting?

Does the image represent the best timing or moment in capturing the subject?

Is the image well composed and does the choice of format enhance the image content?

How well has the tonal range been handled and controlled (highlights and shadows)?

Does the image reflect quality in the control of processing – sharpening, colour, noise?

Does the paper choice and print quality enhance the content and visual feel of the image?

So, as you sift through the thousands of files searching for those “special” images, take a step back, develop trusted relationships with more experienced members of the NZIPP institute, from whom to seek a more respected opinion, and work at being critical and objective in the evaluation of your own imagery. It is through such processes as these that enable us to learn, subsequently grow and become better at what we do. As an added bonus for those working on images for this year’s awards, in April a number of NZIPP Regions will be hosting the esteemed Ian Poole (one of our regular and much respected judges). Ian will be touring to areas around the country offering his insight and wisdom on both his own work and on entering awards “from a judge’s perspective”. We strongly recommend you make the most of this rare opportunity, where you will be able to hear and learn from one of the best and where questions will be encouraged. So, if you haven’t already heard of the dates and locations in your region, make contact with your Regional Chair today (or check out the NZIPP Facebook page – a wonderful opportunity that really should not be missed. The best of luck to you all over the coming months as you undertake the process of creating imagery for this year’s awards. Remember, the NZIPP is about fostering a supportive community of professional photographers. Those people who we help and encourage today will become the one’s who will do the same in return as they themselves develop and grow their own knowledge base and experience.

Ian Poole is well placed to have an opinion about Þne art photography and collecting photographs. He has been a major player in professional photography in Brisbane for nearly 40 years and is a respected AIPP judge with yearly invitations to also judge the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography awards. Despite his professional photography connection he has been a part of a sector of the Queensland photographic art scene that extends from the early 1980s with Imagery Gallery, later with the Photographer’s Gallery and more recently with the Queensland Centre for Photography. He has completed a Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts from the Queensland College of Art and has been awarded an Australia Council residency in Tokyo. Adding to this he has curated photographic exhibitions in Japan (of Queensland photographers) and exhibitions in Australia (of local and Japanese photographers). Ian will show a selection of Australian winning Gold and Silver Images from 2012. Attendees are invited to bring 2 previous award prints or potential award prints. Ian will give a comment on it’s suitability, category, and broad award quality from a judges standpoint. Ian will also discuss an overview for potential judges for training/critique. Wellington Region Wellington had an AGM on March 26. This year it is held as a prelude to a film at the Paramount. The film is a fantastic selection from the French Film Festival. ‘Journal de France’ is a documentary about Raymond Depardon, a French Photographer and Pulitzer winning photojournalist. He founded the Gamma Agency and in 1979 became a member of Magnum. The film includes his work in the war zones as well as his current project with an 8 X 10 camera shooting France , and a continuing discussion. We hired a 42 seat cinema, watched movie and resolved to do it a couple more times each year. A future one would be Samsara which needs to be seen with 4K projection. The key election of Regional people was held. Confirmed as Wellington Chair is Jason Naylor and as Secretary is Esther Bunning. Touring Print Exhibition is again in the main international/domestic passenger entry hall at the Wellington Airport. A huge potential audience -regional, national and international. It runs there until April 2nd.

Upcoming Meeting… Canterbury/Westland Regional Meeting Venue: TBC, Christchurch Date/Time: 8th March, 2013 - 6pm

Regional Updates

Canterbury/Westland Region Photography is as much a creative force as it is a commercial one and the most successful photographers effectively marry the business/commercial and creative aspects of what they do. Two of our local members Rachel Callander and Lee Howell led our meeting this month, by sharing & discussing their current personal projects and the opportunities those have created. We all know that having your own personal projects outside the day to day work helps keep us passionate and ‘alive’ when it comes to the bread and butter work. But so few take the time to actually conceive and create a project that inspires us and pushes us outside our comfort zone. It’s a subject that is constantly pushed at seminars and workshops but yet we still often play the ‘just too busy’ card. Finding time to explore the creative aspects of craft and style can seem a luxury but as Rachel and Lee have found, there can be very significant benefits in doing so. Lee, known more for his automotive photography, talked about stepping away from the more inanimate objects and making portraits. His series of environmental portraits have created excitement and renewed passion by Lee being able to get his teeth into something that he enjoys. Only having started this project towards the end of last year, he is already seeing the benefits with the ability to propose similar ideas for clients. He has since had clients want to move away from the more traditional portrait and create something a little more vibrant. “We’re all story tellers and we can all use that to create imagery.” The past five years have been a roller-coaster for Rachel both personally and professionally, with 2011 being particularly so. That was the year her daughter past away, but also the year Rachel was named NZIPP Wedding Photographer of the Year. Inspired by her daughter and her daughter’s ‘superpowers’, she is now creating a series of portraits of other “superpower” kids, some of which we saw at the Iris Awards in 2012. The imagery is stunning and she has some great plans of how she would like to see these images eventually used. These plans give her motivation and drive with her personal project. The evening was a reminder that we all need to continually push ourselves, discover our passion and push ourselves forward to make ideas more than simply a thought in our head.

Regional Meeting at Alpine Images

Otago/Southland Region This month the Otago Southland Region visited the studio of Alpine Image Co and were treated to bubbles and a talk by Anna Allan. Anna has worked internationally as a photographer since gaining a B.A (Hons) Degree in photography in London over 20 years ago. She is wellknown and respected in the photography industry and has won multiple awards for here wedding and portrait photography. She has an impressive collection of photographic work held in both public and private collections all over the world. Anna gave us an outline of how she started out, how Alpine Images developed the business and how things have grown for them. Plus she discussed the all important pricing/life/work balance. It was inspiring plus entertaining - thanks Anna! 2012 Touring Print Exhibition The Queenstown Airport reported a great response to the 2012 Touring Print Exhibition with multiple people enquiring daily at the information desk. We then moved the Touring Print from the Queenstown Airport up to the top of The Skyline Gondola where it was on display until the 20th March. Thanks Blair Pattinson and Jim Pollard for the truck and man work to get it up the mountain and installed. After putting it on Blair’s truck at The Queenstown Airport and driving it up the Skyline, the service elevator was out of action and we had to wheel it through a maze of glass doors to avoid a large staircase. At one point we were stuck in between two automatic doors and couldn’t go any further because of about a one inch lack of space... But eventually we made it work. Jackie Ranken and Mike Langford got creative while packing it up and filmed a time lapse of the process! We look forward to seeing that in the future! It is now on the way to •
