Presidents Report

In the past week we have been made aware that there is some concern regarding the changes made to this year’s ‘Iris Awards’ and ‘Infocus Conference’. Firstly I would like to make it known that neither the Board nor our event Coordinators ‘Composition’ were made aware that there was a problem with the venue until Composition contacted the venue after hearing rumours through the industry that events there were being cancelled due to the venue not being certified as operational. This notification came a week prior to it being announced to members, suppliers, sponsors etc. Previously, the venue had confirmed they needed to address some problems, but gave assurances and guarantees that any issues would be resolved by March 2014. At the point of hearing we were only six months out from running the event, which in terms of finding a suitable replacement was very difficult. On the 24th of February the Board was notified of this and Composition immediately contacted all other suitable venues as well as ‘Positively Wellington, to see what options were available. Unfortunately nothing was. When we talk of a suitable venue we are talking about one being able to offer us a number of key elements. These include: •

Seven days in a row venue hire

A venue that can run three rooms together for the print judging.

An exhibition space capable of showing several hundred images at any one time.

An area big enough to also support a trade show

A time zone that fitted in with international flights for our Key note speakers (which were already booked and paid for).

The board had already booked flights in order to keep the costs to a minimum.

Honours, the Board and Composition can all verify this as being the case in Wellington. In order to achieve all of these things the Board has to work a good year and a half out from the next event in order to secure something that is deemed suitable. The next step was to very quickly find a replacement location for our planned event somewhere, otherwise it could have been that there just wasn’t going to be one this year – which was unacceptable to us. Composition then looked at what was available given the requirements as listed above and came up with the possibility of returning to Rotorua, though even that wasn’t guaranteed. On Friday the 28th of February the Rotorua Convention centre reported to us that they were unable to give us the booking but instead put us onto the Energy Centre. At that point even they couldn’t accommodate us as they had some fixtures already booked for that period.

Executive Updates

Through perseverance on the part of Composition, and the Events Centre facilitating things by moving other events, by the 2nd of March we were able to confirm that we finally had an alternative venue for the time zone that we had in place and that we could once again think about running our events. Sunday the 2nd of March became the first occasion that we could confirm to everyone that we had secured a booking for the events and it was on that very day that we told everyone about it. It was impossible to do this any earlier than that as no one knew for sure before that. What we are sure of is that in these circumstances: •

Our communication to members was as good as we could achieve

There really weren’t any other venues suitable

Once a suitable venue in Wellington is available again we will be there

We are offering $50 to cover the change of booking fee to compensate those people needing to change/re book existing bookings.

The board and its staff have done everything possible to ensure the best outcome given a very difficult circumstance. It’s not what we wanted but we have all done our very best to ensure that the show will go on – which it is. We appreciate everyone’s concern, as that means you also care. Please trust in us as we believe that we are doing the right thing by you all.

Sincerely,

Portrait Directors Report

The last month has been busy as a Board member, with many little decisions being made constantly on our members behalf. Not least being the emergency decision to find alternate annual Infocus conference facilities. I’ll leave the details of that to the Pres to explain. On another level I have had the pleasure of talking to one of our members who is a very busy shoot & burn portrait photographer. I always find it interesting the many different ways we all go about our business. We had a general chat about the challenges such image making provides, with all the different variables such as lighting, background, environmental characteristics etc unique in just about every locale we choose at any time during the shoot. As a bloke I find myself thinking like a woman most of the time - No I’m not walking on the wild side, but I am thinking where is the wind coming from?, how does her hair look?, is she in a halter neck top?, what will she think about her arms in that position?, is the light flattering? etc etc . This person, like many of our newer members, struggles with posing. This is understandable given that most have little experience, no formal institutional training or just don’t have a clue. I suggest here that you have a resource in other members of the NZIPP who have been around a while & know what they are doing. Look at their work & pick someone you know will be able to help you. To spread the costs, whatever they may be, organise a few of you to share. For a small investment, the quality of your work will increase tenfold. Don’t be afraid to spend a bit of money to get better. Look at your own work & ask yourself are each of the genders treated appropriately, is there an energy communicated & a connection between subjects. Mostly it’s all about love, has your work got it? Shooting & burning seems to be just too tempting an M.O. for many new professionals. Of course it requires less effort & infrastructure, but I feel the fact that many of you are avoiding the responsibility of having hard copy as an end product is costing you in other ways. Firstly, it makes sense that there is less feedback regarding potential lack of quality, especially in a finished printed portrait. Handing over a file is one thing, but it isn’t a photograph until it’s printed. This problem has been highlighted in recent times, especially so in the “Q” process. The images submitted in many cases would easily pass, but the submitted prints are of very poor quality. Why is this? Surely we as image makers & memory creators have a responsibility in the quality of the finished print. Even if you just shoot & burn, surely you must guide your clients to the best labs & have a rapport with that lab as to colour management & quality issues. If you don’t you are letting yourselves & your clients down. When you expose each & every frame, imagine it to be on a wall, printed beautifully, as an emotive piece of art, as décor in your clients homes. To harp on just a bit more, there is even something more important you are not gaining experience in. The art of selling. The aforementioned member stated they hated selling & yet they have the cojones to get 10 sittings a weekend!! Imagine the added value to both their business & the clients if they went that step further & actually eyeballed the client (God forbid !) & they each got to share the results together.

When you go to the dentist they don’t hand you the drill, you experience the complete gamut of their skills & then it’s the bill. So you shooters & burners, don’t just leave your skill set at that door, use your membership to take you further into your craft, to excite you about the legacy you leave, & Lo and Behold maybe not just smiles all around but a little more jingle in the pocket .

Wedding Directors Report

APRIL 2014

Back in 2006 when I first submitted for my wedding Q I thought I would pass for sure, business was going great, people were saying nice things about my work, clients appeared to be happy. I failed. I was mortified, totally and utterly gutted in fact. I felt hard done by and I was sure the panel got it wrong. Looking back, I know the panel did the perfect job of judging what I had submitted that time. I had missed technicalities whilst I had been carried away by my emotional attachment to the photos, my emotional attachment to the fantastic people I’d photographed and how I felt about the day. The process of failing was ultimately integral to my growth and development and made me a better photographer. I never thought it then, but today I’m glad I failed. The Q exists to establish a standard of quality amongst NZIPP members and identify these photographers to members of the public as those who produce a benchmark of quality. The Q process is a platform for becoming a better photographer and subsequently for being a quality photographer day in day out for every client. A Qualified photographer should be capable of producing a Q standard of work every day – we’re not talking award winning photography, simply quality everyday client work. Check out the Q criteria here on the NZIPP website. Just to touch on a few of the highs and lows we are seeing coming through the Q process…. Our Q judges are often seeing wonderful rapport and connection with the subjects, but this is merely one aspect that will influence the images success or otherwise – sometimes it can be easy to feel you’ve nailed this aspect, get blinded by your emotional connection and not create a quality end result. Image capture, composition, an understanding of light is naturally is important. Your post production is also important of course. Having a calibrated screen as part of your workflow is essential, take care with preparing your files properly – ensure you retain highlight and shadow detail and desirable skin tones. Then it comes to printing, where an image becomes a photographic print this can and does often break an otherwise Q worthy print. Now, if you take one thing away from this report, take this – don’t mess up a perfectly good image with a poor quality print. Create and build a relationship with a pro lab / pro printer, if you are going to print your own, put in the ground work to learn how do it properly and use a quality media. Once again double check highlights, shadows, skin tones…. If it’s not up to scratch it needs reprinting. Take care with presentation – if you have mounted and matted prints ensure the new cropping does not change the composition to it’s detriment, if you have created a wedding album and used templates extra care must be taken to ensure cropping hasn’t taken place in an inappropriate place. The finished product counts, each and every aspect of it.

The Q process is about ensuring photographers are part of NZIPP for the right reasons which stem from a commitment to running their businesses in a professional way, with skill and knowledge. Honours Council Report

APRIL 2014

Let the games begin … The waiting is now over, with the recent release of the much anticipated, 2014 Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards Call for Entries document. Dare I say it, but the momentum is starting to build already with the words “Iris Awards” now appearing regularly in Social Media feeds. As always, Honours hopes the changes, minor as they are, help clarify some of the sticking points within the categories. But not only that, they are also aimed at ensuring better opportunities, and more efficiency around the judging process. Classic Categories Two specific areas needed to be addressed with the Portrait Classic and Wedding Classic categories. The first, being further clarification around the intent and requirements of these categories. As such, in the C for E category descriptor we want to emphasise the need for creativity through in-camera capture, not through post-production techniques. “This category is designed to recognise and reward excellence in the daily practice of professional photographers, through the craft skills of in-camera capture. “Classic” needn’t be interpreted as traditional in content or style.” To support the notion of in-camera capture, we’ve clarified the rulings by further specifying that no textures, borders or overlays are to form part of an entry. Secondly, within the judging process itself, we will be briefing judges around the need to differentiate these two categories from others that allow postproduction. The judges will however, still be looking for work that has great visual impact, is creative, has been skillfully handled and takes them beyond that of professional standard. Photojournalism Category The Photojournalism category has been renamed and will now be known as the Documentary category. This move has been to better reflect the nature of the work being entered, and an acknowledgement of the differences between the two photographic genres. In this regard Documentary photography is about the ability to see and capture the stories in everyday life and representing these with honesty and integrity. The change of name also broadens the events and situations from which people can draw from to enter this category. A significant change this year however is the Documentary category will now be judged on a digital monitor, with no physical print required. It’s hoped we might even entice some Photojournalists out there to enter because of this. Student / Assistant Category For several years now we have noticed that rarely, if any, do Assistants of professional photographers enter this category, again feeling the name didn’t reflect its true nature. So, from this year the Student/Assistant category will be known as the Student Category.

Print and Matt Size New Zealand changed to the metric system in 1976, and some 38 years later NZIPP is doing the same! It’s not that we are slow picking up on this it’s more around the photographic language associated with print sizes, still largely specified using imperial measurements. The reason we are changing now however, is mostly due to mount board sheet sizes and the cost and efficiency of attaining four boards per sheet using metric measurements. Subsequently, to make it easier for everyone, the change this year is for a matt (mount) board size of 40cm x 50cm (not the previous 16” x 20”, or 40.64cm x 50.8cm). In association with this we have also increased the print size to minimum of 26cm on the longest side. This, when combined with moving the judging panel closer to the print viewing panel, is a deliberate move to bring greater efficiency to the judging process in order to provide more opportunity for judges to give feedback on a wider range of images. Additionally, in recent times there has developed an expectation and perception that Judges need to view entries close up to fairly assess a print or image. This in fact is not the case and this year we will be removing any requirement for a judge to leave their seat in order to judge a piece of work. We anticipate this will also flow through into greater efficiencies around the judging process, a process that is also an educational forum of which feedback on work plays a significant part. Honours’ therefore encourages you to wow the judges with your imagery. It is the responsibility of every entrant to ensure work entered provides the visual impact needed to entice the judges out of their seats, and to reward them even more when they view the work closer up. That is the nature of any photographic competition. It’s all about the money … Over the past few years we have worked hard in order to keep entry fees the same. Very reluctantly, this year we have made the inevitable small increase to the cost of entering, with the Member rate increase going from $48 to $50 per entry. For students the increase has been a lot more, moving towards the realistic costs associated with judging. Second to this, largely as an enticement for more people to enter, and acknowledging that the original fee may have been a deterrent, we have reduced the cost of entering both the Wedding Album and Fusion categories; entry fees for Wedding Album and Fusion now the same as all other categories. There is now no excuse, and plenty of time, for entrants to put together their “wow” entries for these two categories.

Honours Council Report Continued

APRIL 2014

And, here are the carrots … 1. Prize Pool Honours are very pleased to be able to secure a slightly larger prize pool this year. Please read the 2014 Call for Entries document for details around this. 2. Highest Scoring Entry: Previously, we have presented two Highest Scoring Print awards, colour and monochrome. This year we have moved to an overall Highest Scoring Entry award that will recognise the single entry that receives the highest mark across all of the main categories. This will now also include the Wedding Album and Fusion categories. 3. NZIPP Rookie Photographer of the Year: This year we are introducing the “NZIPP Rookie Photographer of the Year” award. This will be presented to a NZIPP member who is a first time entrant in any of the main (open) categories. The winner determined by the highest aggregate from their top four entries, regardless of which category they enter.

Finally (I promise), if you are considering entering the Iris Awards this year, make sure you download the 2014 Iris Awards Call for Entries document (www.nzipp.org.nz) or click the button below.

We hope that the newer layout makes it clearer for people to pinpoint the information relevant to the categories they are entering. As always, all the best as you start preparing your entries … the crazy season of Iris Awards madness has now begun … enjoy, learn and grow!

Kind Regards

Kaye Davis - GMNZIPP, MAIPP, MCGD Chair of the NZIPP Honours Council) On behalf of the Honours Council, including: Ollie Dale, Blair Quax, Tony Stewart and Esther Bunning.

APRIL 2014

NZIPP News FROM THE NZIPP WELLINGTON REGION..... In the last 4 days I’ve heard of 2 Wellington photographers having their house burgled. Whilst all people involved are safe and well, they lost many of their possessions in the burglaries - and this included plenty of Canon camera gear, computer equipment, and even digital files. This is a good reminder to look at your current situation:

Be vigilant Please be a more watchful around 2nd hand Canon equipment. The list involves: • Canon 5D & 5D Mark II bodies • Canon L series lenses (prime & zooms) • Canon Speedlite flashes • ... and more If you suspect anything, contact the authorities, or email me for further information & serial numbers.

Be insured Thankfully all parties affected had proper business insurance. It’s highly improbable that standard Home & Contents insurance would cover this amount of professional camera gear. Rothbury Insurance Brokers have the support of the NZIPP & AIPA, and their Focus Plus package is recommended. Contact them today for a quote. Don’t forget to make a list of your items and include the serial numbers - insurers always ask for these details.

Be secure Please consider where you store and lock your camera gear. A simple gun safe could be a solid and secure answer to securing your gear at your studio / house.

Be safe BACKUP! - Now is the time to look at your current backup solution. Not 1, nor 2, but 3 copies, including an offsite backup. Don’t wait until tomorrow. A 3TB external drive is barely over $200, and is a very simple solution to an offsite backup. Buy 2, and swap them every week after every photo session.

Infocus 2014 Change of destination – Rotorua here we come!! We wish to announce a change in venue and destination for the 2014 Epson / NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Judging and Infocus 2014 Conference. The venue originally booked in Wellington sustained damage in the July earthquake last year, which required repair work to be undertaken before conferences could use the venue. We had been assured by management that it would be completed in March 2014. Unfortunately we have recently been advised that the venue won’t be reopening in time for our event in late July early August. But we are delighted to now be holding our event at the Energy Event Centre, Rotorua. For those of you, who don’t know the venue, it’s a purpose built convention centre. Auckland/Northland Region It’s been busy in the Auckland region over the last few months, we started of with a BBQ and a talk by Ollie Dale. As usual the word BBQ inevitably means rain, however a little rain wasn’t going to put a dampener on our party. With a few words from our host Russel Hamlet and a quick bite to eat we moved on to the next part of the evening, a talk by Ollie Dale discussing his transition from stills to video. As always it’s nice to hear about some of the amazing projects our members are involved in. Last month we where also hosted by our friends at Queensberry, starting off with a tour of their bindery and followed by a discussion about the business of photography and an insight into making the numbers stack up. With insight from over 40 years of industry experience Ian Baugh led the conversation. A couple of dates to note in your diaries, by now you would have all heard about the RSA Project. We have a lot of ground to cover in the Auckland region so please get involved. The date off course is April 25th Another key date in Auckland is the 2nd of May, we will be hosting Ian Poole as part of his nationwide tour. And on a final note we will have our AGM in April at our next meeting, this will be a great opportunity to discuss our region and we want to see as many of our local members as possible. Thanks,

Never thought I’d see it in my life time. Those were some pretty big boots to fill as well. Our Secretary of the Century “ Alana Dresner “ is busy this year Kicking Cancer’s Butt ! Thank you Alana from the bottom of our hearts for your hard work over the years, now it’s your turn to sit in the back row with your feet up ! …. & just remember “we got ya back”, what ever you need just ask! Waikato/BOP held the quickest Regional AGM in history, this is the plan for positions in 2014. Two new position were created Deputy Chair & Editor (who takes care of newsletters/ social media & events). We are asking for a 2-3 year commitment & with our new succession plan for major roles, changeover should be seamless in the future. Tracy Stamatakos ………... Chairperson Mark McKeown ……….........Deputy Chairperson Suzanne Todd-McKeown ... Secretary Editor ……............................. Jody Beattie After our AGM (in Tauranga) we rented out a theatre to watch “Samsara”, a 2011 documentary film, directed by Ron Fricke and produced by Mark Magidson, who also collaborated on Baraka (1992), a film of a similar vein. Samsara was filmed over five years in 25 countries around the world. It was shot in 70 mm format and output to digital format. The film premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and received a limited release in August 2012. “Samsara” takes the form of a nonverbal, guided meditation that will transforms viewers, as they are swept along a journey of the soul. Through powerful images the film illuminates the links between humanity and the rest of the nature, showing how our life cycle mirrors the rhythm of the planet. Some of us were put off chicken and pork for life! It is worth a watch - visual overload and very thought provoking. The ice-creams went down a treat! Waikato/BOP April Speaker – Wellington Photographer, Mandi Lynn Mandi Lynn found herself in 2009 a single mother, at the beginning of a recession, in a job she hated, & with zero training in Photography or Fine Arts. In the wreckage of her circumstances she had two choices: listen to conventional wisdom & stay with the safe government job & keep a roof over her kid’s head...or take a risk & show her son how to chase his dreams until they were his. Today Mandi owns her dream studio that’s been described as a surreal fairy like wonderland with chooks & angora rabbits frequently photobombing her shoots. She has a 2-3 month waiting list to get photographs in her studio. The studio averages 9 portrait shoots a week & she has a staff of 4 supported by the work her studio brings in. She specializes in Beautyscapes, Passionscapes, & Soulscapes & is currently in the process of writing a book called The Field Guide for Dreamers - How to Turn Your Passions into a Sustainable Income. www.mywellingtonphotographer.co.nz

Canterbury/Westland Region With tips & tricks up their sleeves, wisdom in their back pockets & other handy titbits tucked away in their camera bags it was a great honour to have our experts share their knowledge & experience with us at the Canterbury Westland “Great NZIPP Speed Date”. This was a members only event where a panel of local experts shared as much information & experience as we could get out of them in each 12 minute time slot. With ten different experts on hand we had a huge range of experience to draw from. Their specialties ranged from traditional portrait photography to fun & funky wedding photography, commercial photography to capturing motor sport events, working in Lightroom & working with video. “The ‘Speed Date’ meeting was not only informative from a photographic point of view, but as a still relatively new NZIPP member, I found that its true value for me was in getting to meet a range of other members & talking with them on a range of subjects. The Experts were more than happy to share information & answer any questions, also throwing the odd question back at us to encourage reflection on our own photography/businesses. I found it a very positive & enjoyable meeting.” said Kylie who has been a member for just over 12 months. It was great to see some old members who were able to join us once again, some members having been absent from meetings for over a year or more. This was a great opportunity for the new members to introduce themselves, shake hands & meet face to face with some of the photographers that they might not speak to at a regular NZIPP meeting. This is how one of our resident experts, Rachel Callander, saw the event. “What a fabulous night! From where I was sitting I saw high energy, great conversations, meeting & greeting & a sense that this event really embodied the community & teaching ethos of the NZIPP. It was a hubbub of chatter & laughter. I loved being able to meet people on a more personal level & get to know more about where they are at & what they do. It was wonderful to be able to help with the variety of questions asked which covered things from “what inspires you” to “what to do about marketing”, to help me with pricing, to crowd funding strategies. A few of the photographers on the panels mentioned how so many people asked about marketing, which may mean we need to hold an evening on this subject. It was great to get a sense of where we are at as a community, our strengths, weaknesses & areas we can help & encourage each other to be better individually & as a professional body. I think that this kind of event will be successful again in the future & everybody I spoke to got a lot out of it & enjoyed themselves.”

Regional Updates

Otago/Southland Region Otago Southland Region would like to congratulate Rochelle Dillon and Megan Graham who are now Qualified Professional Portrait Photographers! The Southland component of our region is becoming very active and both Rochelle and Megan (along with a few others) have a lot to do with the new interest and activity. Our April Social get together and NZIPP meeting was held on the 1st April so no pics just yet. We had the wonderful Rachel Callander coming to talk to us in Queenstown, which was well attended and everyone got so much out of it! Rachel attracted quite a few aspiring local photographers and creatives that hadn’t previously come along and also members from around our Region. Rachel is so passionate and open and everyone was very inspired. Prior to Rachel’s talk, we had a social hour with drinks and nibbles in the wonderful space The Front Room in Queenstown and all took part in a new exhibition they are holding for April, The Art of The Selfie. Their aim is to have 1000 selfies on the wall by the end of April, and our NZIPP group were amongst the first to contribute. May 10th and 11th has been confirmed for The Southland Trip away in The Catlins. Rochelle Dillon is putting together a very hands on overnight trip, with organised landscape, lighting and portrait shoots in beautiful locations. There will also be facilities and time for an in depth print critique and of course socialising. The Catlins is a very beautiful area and places are very limited for this, please email Rochelle at rdphotography@hotmail.co.nz (sooner rather than later) if you want to come along!
