APRIL 2010

We hope you like the new magazine style version of PRO REPORT this month. By utilising some of the new options with online publishing, we have been able to place PRO REPORT online. This new format allows us to have more content and images, than emailing you a pdf to your inbox. We have used the Issuu publishing site to generate the online PRO REPORT magazine. Please take a few moments to discover the page turning functions, and the keys at the top of the page which enable you to scroll through the magazine, change the format, increase to a full page to read online, zoom in and out, change the reading layout, and of course print off. If you have any feedback or ideas, please do not hesitate to email it through to us at: marketing@nzipp.org.nz We would love to hear from you!

Presidents Report

Planning is now well underway for Infocus 2010 in Queenstown. It’s shaping up to be a great event. I’ve just spent two days in Auckland with Arna seeing many of our key sponsors for the event ensuring they have a “face” to the person they will be dealing with on a day to day basis. Arna and Nerida, as our NZIPP Marketing & Development team, are proving to be great value with us well ahead with planning compared to last year. We are close to confirming and announcing most of our speakers for Infocus 2010, including a big name from the USA. We plan to have a good mix of inspiration,, business, education, and opportunity for interactive discussion with panel-based forums. Many people already seem to be making plans to attend and fit in a bit of spring skiing around the event. Remember if you book soon your travel will be less and you’ll have more accommodation options. Don’t hold off and wait for “grabaseats” – they may never come up for that week! If you’re looking for accommodation, think about going in with others and renting a holiday home. They’re great value for money (potentially less than $100 a night each), and some of the Queenstown ones are a bit flasher than your average bach. Check out www.bookabach.co.nz and http://www.holidayhouses.co.nz/Queenstown.asp.

“We are close to confirming and announcing most of our speakers for Infocus 2010 including a big name from the USA.”

One of the things that came out strongly from Arna and I meeting with sponsors in Auckland, is the need for photographers to buy their equipment in New Zealand. If we don’t do this our suppliers really do find it difficult to support us. They all realise that you can often buy products offshore for less, but price structuring is often different here than it is in the USA, which makes it difficult for NZ suppliers to match prices. I guess the other thing to consider is when it comes to servicing equipment it’s a big help if you are dealing with the locals. It’s a small industry, and if you have attended events like Infocus the suppliers will get to know you personally, and that can make a big difference when something breaks and you need a loaner or repairs in a hurry. NZIPP subscriptions will be in the mail as this goes out. Just a reminder that if you pay on time you get a 10% discount. Paying on time also improves our cashflow, costs us less in chasing overdue subs, and helps the board make early decisions on what we can budget for over the coming year – i.e. we can plan for more benefits and education, and you will get more value out of your membership. Till next month.

Chicken or Egg? This month you will be getting your subscription invoice for NZIPP membership. Recently while I was having a beer with an old friend who is a photographer but not a member of the Institute we discussed membership. His first reaction was all about the cost and he gave me the standard “what’s in it for me?” line. I responded with some of the benefits that members receive; then, in a moment of intellectual genius pointed out that the majority of photographers who he would call “successful” are members. His response was “well they have the money to pay the membership fees”. I knew I was fighting a losing battle. It was like trying to negotiate with a suicide bomber. I almost gave up at this point but my parting shot was to ask him what happened first. Did the photographers he referred to join NZIPP once they had “made it” or did their success come after joining and getting involved? In my mind the answer was pretty clear what came first. My friend has since softened his stance somewhat but I still haven’t seen an application form from him. As Rachel Hunter said it won’t happen overnight but it will happen! If you are asking similar questions, I ask you, are you a chicken or an egg?

Portrait Directors Report

Earlier in March, Steve Sharp and I presented at the Auckland Regional Meeting, giving the region an insight into what we do for our own work, and how we saw our roles on the board of the NZIPP. It was great fun, and we got a load of positive feedback, and a great turnout which was both flattering and encouraging. However, there was one point that was particularly noteworthy for me. It was when Steve mentioned that his average revenue per wedding was over $10k. All of a sudden jaws dropped, pens scribbled furiously, and a murmur spread around the room. For a good half an hour the questions were all angled toward finding out how Steve does it. Was Steve about to divulge the Magic Formula? How much are his album pages? Does he sell prints? You get the picture... The problem is (now brace yourself people, this is going to hurt...) there is NO MAGIC FORMULA! I know Steve won’t mind me saying this, but he’s not a magician. Steve is a damn good photographer, that works constantly to advance his skills, he works bloody hard and cares about his clients. Yes, he’s won awards, and that helps in being able to charge a little more. But he’s not won those through luck - he submits great images to the awards each year because he looks around, takes inspiration from a great many sources. Steve puts a huge effort in to getting the best final version of his original vision for every image. And then he loses sleep for a couple of weeks before hand because he wants it so much. So, if any of you are looking for a magic formula to help you own that Ferrari, sorry, there isn’t one. But if you take a leaf out of my good mate Steve Sharp’s book, and do everything with passion, belief, hard work, empathy for clients and a belief that excellence is the only acceptable end result then you may start to notice that the monthly bills get a heck of a lot easier to pay.

Until next month

Honours Council Report

APRIL 2010

Well we have finally finished the Iris Awards entry information for 2010 and loaded it under the Infocus tab on the NZIPP website. Please take your time to review all the information available, particularly in relation to the new categories this year, and the changes to entry conditions for existing categories. As we get closer to the Infocus event we will be letting you know the details for the online entry, and where to send your entries. At this point it’s probably enough to know the categories and their descriptions. Also please familiarise yourself with the Conditions of Entry, as every year we have people getting it totally wrong, despite it all being written down for all to see. As sponsors sign up we will announce these details through the PRO REPORT and let you know the prizes being offered. Ultimately though the prize is actually winning awards, and then marketing that fact so that you stand out from the crowd. Remember, you are able to enter up to ten images – four in each category, and this year there is even more category choice than before.

Sincerely

Mike Langford Chairman of NZIPP Honours Council, which includes: Bryan Isbister, Shelley Amerio-Higgins, Stuart Riddell, and Malcolm Somerville.

P.S. Some late news just in - the Queensland PPA have decided that the NZIPP Judges Briefing for Photographic Awards, which was put together by our very own Honours Council, is the best they have ever read. They have asked if they can use the same briefing model, which has been agreed to by the Honours Council. In addition Mike Langford and Jackie Ranken have been invited as guest judges for the event.

Q Submission Dates

For those who aren’t qualified yet it’s time to start planning a Q submission for 2010. Once successful you will be able to advertise your NZIPP qualification, and your profile will appear in the Find a Photographer function on the NZIPP website. Mark the Q submission dates in your diaries and start planning now! Wednesday 19 May 2010 Wednesday 04 August 2010 Wednesday 10 November 2010 For more information see the Q Programme Details under Quick Links on the NZIPP website.

Membership Benefits Vodafone NZIPP is in discussions with Vodafone to see if we can get a group discount/ benefit for all members. For this to work, Vodafone needs to correctly establish NZIPP members calling (both fixed and mobile), broadband patterns. We would appreciate if all members could take three minutes to click on the link below and complete the survey. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5HTQPK8 The survey is completely anonymous.

Adobe Photographers Directory for Qualified Members As a membership benefit, NZIPP Qualified members are entitled to be profiled on the Adobe Photographers Directory (www.photographersdirectory.adobe.com). To take up this opportunity, email Fiona (info@nzipp.org.nz), NZIPP Administration Officer for an individual password.

Web Profiles for Qualified Members As a membership benefit, NZIPP Qualified members are entitled to a profile and gallery listing in the Find a Photographer function on the NZIPP website. Potential clients using the Find a Photographer function will first search by region, and then by qualification (Commercial, Wedding, Portrait – remember you’re only listed in a category in which you have a Q). If 10 listings come up, and only two have galleries loaded to grab that buyer’s attention, guess who’s going to get the job! In addition those that have galleries loaded will appear at the top of the results list, and those who don’t have galleries will appear at the bottom of the list - so loading your profile and gallery is really worth the effort. Don’t delay – login to the NZIPP membership system using your member ID and password and go to the Q Profile tab of your membership record. Check out the Help pages for guidelines on how to use the new system, and don’t forget to save and submit your new profile. Once submitted your profile is queued and will be available online once approved. This is not an automated task so can take up to 24 hours.

Regional Updates

APRIL 2010

Regional Updates Canterbury/Westland Region On Monday 15 March we had our Regional AGM, and that’s when the new Regional Chair and Committee members were voted in. Chair: Lisa Gane Secretary: Linda O Reilly Treasurer: Paul Daly Regional Committee: Dave Foster, Ron Lindsay, Dean McKenzie, Susan Siu, David Watkins Lisa Gane is ready for the challenge of being Regional Chair, and the work it involves. We think she may even be the first female chair for the region! Lisa’s striking images have been featured in magazines as diverse as Pavement and Homestyle, and her professional shoots have covered clients across the country in a range of industries.

Lisa Gane Canterbury /Westland Regional Chair

A very special thank you to Tony Stewart who has did a fantastic job as Regional Chair for three years. He worked very hard behind the scenes to make sure everything happened as and when it should. Giving up his time to ensure that the Canterbury / Westland region worked together as one, and members got the most out of the region. You deserve a long holiday Tony! The March meeting and AGM was held at the home and office of Hedgehog House, the photo library which is owned and run by Colin Monteath. http:// www.hedgehoghouse.com/hedgehog/our-photographers/ Colin generously gave us plenty of information about the behind-the-scenes work of the library and showed us his books and publications. He then did a slideshow of his own images from his extensive travels, mainly to Antarctica, South Georgia and major mountain areas around the world. This man has really travelled!! He has photographed some remote and fascinating places that most of us can only dream about visiting. It was very generous of Colin and his wife to allow us to have the meeting in his home, which contains several floor to ceiling bookcases filled with a huge amount of books.

Next Canterbury / Westland Regional Meeting is likely to be Monday 19 April.

Waikato/BOP Region Matt Mindham was our top scorer in the March Regional Print Judging. Nicola Topping was the judge and she gave the image an 89. Matt is a recent addition to our group, having just arrived last October from the UK where he was running a successful photography business. He is now based in Welcome Bay. The Waikato / Bay of Plenty Region had their Christmas function and awards in December (yes, a little old news, but good things take time!) at Classic Flyers. Everyone seemed to get into the spirit of the hat theme. Karyn Flett was the winner on the night, with Nicola Inglis as runner up. Adobe Hint of the Month

APRIL 2010

Adobe Hint of the Month

By John Doogan

Photoshop Layers, Still the Biggest Thing You can’t go past a good understanding of layers and layer masks when it comes to making the most out of Photoshop. Sure, you can do fancy things without them but I don’t know of any other single photoshop skill that will give you as many options for solving problems and offering alternatives. It’s the original ‘non-destructive’ working method and goes right back to Photoshop version 3. So they aren’t going to go away soom so you may as well get the hang of them sooner rather than later. Below is a before and after showing some of ways I often use layers to solve problems or build an image into a concept. Background layer only

blending mode of layer is set here

Layered Composite

4 3 2 1

Text layer with lowered opacity and effects Layer Mask; white reveals the layer, black coneals Copy of background layer converted to smart object, blur added, soft light blending mode

1. This layer has a Guassian blur filter run through it and has been set to ‘soft light’ blending mode. The layer has been converted to a smart object so the filter settings can be changed or removed altogether at a later date if necessary. 2. The first of the adjustment layers. Adjustment layers are a non-destructive way of adjusting the colour and tone of an image. In this case blending mode has been set to screen, which is similar to lightening the image by about a stop. A large soft brush has been used to paint black into the mask where I didn’t want the lightening effect to occur. 3. A curves adjustment layer set to multuply blending mode. This is the opposite to screen and is similar to darkening the image by about a stop. Once again a large soft brush has been used to paint black into the areas of the mask I don’t want the darkening, i.e. the centre. 4. Text layer with glow effect. Not strictly photography but just do it becuase you can. And make sure you charge your client for all this extra value!

Margaret Moth - Internationally Renowned Photojournalist Dies New Zealand-born internationally renowned photojournalist Margaret Moth has died of cancer. She was 59. Moth came to prominence after being almost killed when she was shot in the face covering the war in Sarajevo in 1992. Moth, born Margaret Wilson in Gisborne, worked as a camerawoman in NZ before moving to the US. She began working for CNN in 1990. She covered the Persian Gulf War, the rioting that followed Indira Gandhi’s assassination and the civil war in Tbilisi, Georgia, for CNN before volunteering for the dangerous mission of filming in Sarajevo. On July 23, 1992 in Sarajevo, Moth was struck by a sniper’s bullet as she drove with colleagues to the airport to interview pilots flying relief supplies. Her jaw was shattered, and she lost nearly all of her teeth and part of her tongue. Moth was rushed to a local hospital for emergency surgery and then flown to the United States where she underwent numerous reconstructive surgeries. “My face, it felt like my face was falling off. I remember, I was trying to hold it on. “I knew I had to keep calm and I knew I had to stay conscious: ‘If I go unconscious, I will stop breathing’.” After much reconstructive surgery, she went back to her job in Sarajevo. In the 1970s, Moth worked as a camerawoman for TVNZ in Dunedin. She was also a fearless skydiver and an enthusiastic bell ringer. Her supervisor, Paul Donovan, told the Otago Daily Times that Moth, the country’s first female television news camera operator, was a “lovable rogue”. “She never did anything naughty, but she often just pushed boundaries with a twinkle in her eye.” Margaret was passionate about skydiving and passionate about filming news, Mr Donovan said. Moth had initially wanted to be a mechanic but could not get an apprenticeship. She studied at the University of Canterbury, where she specialised in film and photography. Moth was diagnosed with cancer more than three years ago and entered a hospice in Rochester, Minnesota. “I would have liked to have gone out with a bit more flair but I feel I can die with dignity. I don’t think it matters how long you live, so long as you can say: ‘I’ve got everything out of life’,” she said.

Easter and Anzac Day Public Holidays

The Easter and Anzac Day public holidays are just around the corner. Now is a good time to familiarise yourself with staff entitlements for these public holidays. The public holidays over the Easter period are Good Friday (2 April) and Easter Monday (5 April). Anzac Day (25 April) is celebrated on the day it falls. This year Anzac Day falls on a Sunday. For employees who do not normally work on a Sunday, Anzac Day will not be a paid public holiday. Unlike the Christmas and New Year public holidays, there is no “Monday-ising of Anzac Day if it falls on a weekend.

Corporate Members A special thank you to our Corporate Members for their continuing support:

Find out more about holiday entitlements for Easter & Anzac Day in 2010. The Holidays Online Tool provides guidance on whether an employee is entitled to a paid day off on a public holiday and what an employee should be paid for their day off or for working on the public holiday. Keep in mind that Easter Sunday is NOT a public holiday. This means that if your business cannot provide work for staff who normally work on Sundays due to restricted trading on Easter Sunday, then it is a good idea to plan ahead and explore options for managing employee leave entitlements for Easter Sunday. Wishing all NZIPP members a safe and relaxing Easter!
