Presidents Report

Wow - my last ProReport article as President of NZIPP! I guess I’m a pretty idealogical person. In that respect there’s always been a bunch of things that I’ve wanted to see improve in our industry. However I quickly came to the realisation that unless I was doing the job on a full time basis I wouldn’t be able to achieve them all! I am very happy with the progress we’ve made on couple of key things though. I’m really pleased that we were able to contract Arna and Nerida to look after organising and running Infocus and marketing NZIPP. It’s an event that takes a massive amount of organisation and I felt the Board was having to manage too much day to day operational things for this event. They brought a high level of professionalism to Infocus and have built very strong relationships with our sponsors. Those relationships have paid off in that, despite very tough economic times, we’ve been able to maintain and even grow our sponsorship levels. It has also freed up the Board to begin looking at bigger picture strategic plans for NZIPP – which is exactly what a Board should be doing rather than spending most of every board meeting planning for a single event like Infocus and the Iris Awards. To that end we’ve been able develop the outline for a formalised Continuing Professional Development Programme and taking our members through to the next step from being “Q” qualified to Accredited members. It was always my personal belief that just having a “Q” simply assessed on basic photographic competence was not enough to provide customers with any real certainty that members also operated their business to industry best practice levels. The CPD programme and Accreditation will not only allow us to do that, it will also ensure our members are “current” in both their business practice, legal commitments and creative and technical skills. This means we really can say “NZIPP means Professional”. It will bring us in line with many other industries requiring their members active participation in a CPD programme. I’m really looking forward to seeing this implemented in the next couple of years. I hope it has a significant impact on raising the standards in our industry and directly benefits all of you by helping you stand out in an overcrowded marketplace from non-members. There are many more challenges ahead and I thought I would leave you with a few personal observations about the photographic industry at the moment. The industry has certainly changed in the last 10 years! But I’m not talking about the massive technological change here. I’m talking about the makeup of our industry – of professional photographers. I was recently looking at group photographs taken at the NZIPP conference at the Portage in 2002. Most of the photographers there had studios and many employed staff. (& at that time many were still debating whether to stick with film or “go digital” LOL !!). Today we are in an era where very few photographers operate a retail or commercial studio. Most photographers are working from home, most work on their own, most rely on the internet and web pages to market themselves or showcase their work, and for many, photography is not the primary source of their household income. This is not unique to New Zealand – it is a global trend in the industry.

AUGUST 2011

I think another challenge we face is the ever growing number of tertiary education options to “learn how to become a professional photographer” when the reality is many students completing their courses are ill-equipped for the real business of photography and are entering an over-saturated market. NZQA are about to undertake a review and I believe it will be important for NZIPP to start lobbying education authorities for rationalisation and ensure industry relevance in this area. A result of both the above situations is significant overcrowding and prices being forced down in the marketplace. There is no question some of those entering the industry are talented photographers and can create beautiful work. But they must also value their work, know what it really costs to stay in business and understand how they price their work actually affects the industry as a whole. In this respect it will be very important for NZIPP to continue the Pricing and Best Practice workshops Richard Linton has run nationwide on a regular basis. There has been one constant I think in my involvement with NZIPP to date. The absolutely stunning quality of work presented at the Iris Awards year on year. The photographic talent we have in this country is astounding and we know it stacks up as world class. I hope all members are inspired every year by what they see and use it to push their own photographic (and Photoshop) skills and creativity. As I hand over my presidential chains that’s one thing I am definitely looking forward to getting back into – time to shoot my own work. I have my Fellowship to achieve!! Thank you for entrusting me and the rest of the Board to guide the direction of NZIPP over the last couple of years. Thank you to Mike for taking over the role from me, Richard, Nicola and Russell who are a mighty fine team of Directors, and our staff Fiona, Deborah, Arna, Nerida and our accountant Al for all your hard work. You have all been a pleasure to work with!! I know I leave NZIPP in great hands. I look forward to seeing many of you at Infocus in Rotorua in the next few days. We’re going to have a great time and I wish all those who have entered the awards success.

All the best

AUGUST 2011

During the school holidays the family & I headed down south to teach the ankle biter how to ski (she’s gifted, only took a day, I’m less gifted and managed to break a rib snowboarding on Coronet Peak). On the way home we did a loop up the West Coast (that’s in the South Island, for you Aucklanders) and caught up with long time NZIPP member and Master of Photography, Stewart Nimmo. He runs one of VERY few visible studios running today. Based in Greymouth (population 10 000), they run a gallery on a prime CBD corner selling photographic prints, gifts and souvenirs. Upstairs is the studio, framing and post production space. After having dinner with Stu, lubricated by some Monteiths (now only made in Timaru or Auckland alas) we got talking business. A couple of words passed his lips “we are only a small town”. Talk about red rag to a bull, I had to ask… •

Do Big Macs cost any less? No, and yes they do have McD’s in Greymouth ……and KFC!

Is petrol cheaper? No and definately don’t buy it in Haast

Does a litre of milk cost the same? Yes, but we passed a very big milk factory in Hokitika

Is the minimum wage lower? Don’t think so

Are airfares to get there cheaper for Coasters? No, and you can only fly into Hokitika or Westport

Is a new car purchased at Coast Toyota cheaper than Giltraps? What colour is the sky on your planet

Does electricity cost less? They wish

Are mobile phone calls any cheaper? Not using Vodafone plus coverage is a bad as the rest of NZ, so don’t feel special

In short the answer to most questions is HELL NO! OK, houses are cheaper than the main centres, but surely the lower rent or mortgage payments leave more in the pocket to spend on photography? Some things are cheaper in the provinces, take whitebait on the West Coast or avocados in the Bay of Plenty but overall, on average you win some, you loose some. The cost of business is similar regardless of where you are based. For people in smaller centres you have one major competitive advantage ……less competition (and correspondingly fewer people who “just love to take photos” rather than “”love to take photos AND support a family). As a highly unpaid NZIPP Director I did some through in-depth research (yellowpages.co.nz) and searched for the terms ”Commercial Photographer”, ”Portrait Photographer”, ”Wedding Photographer” in both Greymouth and Auckland. The results were 2 vs 63, 1 vs 97, 1 vs 76. OK, the smartarse out there will say that Auckland is larger and yes, you get a chocolate fish, a gold star and first in class award for pointing that fact out. But my point is that there are a lot fewer professional photographers in the provinces than the big smoke. If any one has the ability to set the rules, it is those in areas that have fewer operators .

“The moral of my story is that if you are in a small community, stop trying to blame someone else for your problems.”

The moral of my story is that if you are in a small community, stop trying to blame someone else for your problems (or join the Labour Party). If your answer to the question “why don’t you charge more (to make your business viable)” is, “the ‘market’ won’t pay that”, I ask, have you ever asked for rates that mean your business is viable? This brings us full circle. I consider Stu a mate (or as they say on the coast a good bastard), he’s the first to admit that things have been tough on the Coast lately. We work in different geographic areas and in many ways do different types of jobs but we also share a lot in common. We are both in business, both have families to feed. Through communication we have gained mutually from our relationship, professionally and personally. Stu sees the value in this type of relationship, he (along with colleagues Lydia and Jason) will be at Infocus this week. We are actually all colleagues, not competitors. What you learn at conference from the presenters is just the start. The friendships you form and conversations you have may change your life. For those not registered, it’s not too late. I look forward to seeing many of you in Rotorua this weekend.

Regional Updates

AUGUST 2011

Regional Updates Auckland Region We had a very entertaining and informative evening with Nick Tressider at our July meeting in Auckland. Nick recently presented at Image Nation so we were very lucky to have him on board. Nick runs an advertising & commercial photography business from his Parnell studio where we all met for the evening. It was helpful for our commercial photographers to see how he runs things but the techniques and principals he employs translate into any photography business. Image by Gino Demeer

He started by showing us how to find out the actual cost of being in business. There are resources available on both the AIPA and NZIPP websites to do this (e.g. the Base Rate Calculator). He used an example of how doing a simple $500 portrait job could actually be costing you money and be harmful to your business if you don’t have a proper agreement in place. The issue of licensing photographic works correctly was used in this example as well - the different options in licensing, why we need to do it, the importance of contracts. Again there are some great resources on the NZIPP website for this. Nick also talked about the importance of business workflow. Having set routines in backing up and managing files makes life a whole lot easier and can help to instill more confidence in your clients and possibly be a point of difference when marketing your business. A big thank you to Nick for his hospitality and sharing his techniques on running a successful photography business. Check out his website at http:// www.nick-t.com/

AUGUST 2011

Wellington Region A great last month and a schedule now planned through until March 2012. Preparation for the Iris Awards has been a lot of recent action .... the countdown became serious as a “Print Judging” meeting was held at the end of June, upstairs at The Back Bencher” pub. Some interesting work was presented and tested with time for the entrants to refine or put on backburner. Interest in the NZIPP “Wellington Photographer of the Year” has been increased by the magnificent prize created by Terry. The collector Leica camera based trophy will each year go to the member with the highest aggregate score of their four top scoring prints at Infocus 2011

Wellington POY Trophy

As this goes to press we have the first of a series of Lighting Workshops, this one is being held at Wellington Photographic Supplies. Wellington commercial photographer Mike Clare www.mikeclare.com has kindly offered to demonstrate some small flash / off camera uses. You know the situations you find your self in when the available lighting is bad or non existent, and there is no power outlet within miles, and pushing the ISO of your images sensor to the limit is not your ideal choice. We look look at small flashes, light shapers, and those little devices that make them communicate with the mother ship. Then in August, post Iris Awards and Infocus 2011 Conference, attention will turn to another local Q Workshop. With Q Assessments set for August 30, Wellington will hold a workshop on Monday August 15, 1.30 to 4.00 p.m. Venue: Terry Hann & Esther Bunning’s Studio, Appleshaw Clifford Square, Featherston – Registration: Please email robyn.greening@xtra.co.nz if you wish to attend by 10 August.

Regional Updates

AUGUST 2011

Regional Updates Canterbury/Westland Region First and foremost, a HUGE thank you to all NZIPP members who contributed to the ‘Christchurch NZIPP earthquake fund’. The contributions allowed us down here to have one less thing to worry. Craig Robertson - NZIPP President - attended our July meeting and personally gave us the fabulous news that thanks to the donations received from members and regions, we will not have to pay full membership fees for this financial year. Which is great news given that all Christchurch businesses are struggling post quakes. Over the course of our July evening meeting, it was discovered many of us don’t frame our own work and have it on display, something that is bound to change after listening to two very passionate speakers on the subject. We had the privilege of having Dan Sutherland, and Margaritha Straw from Beverly Studios, who complemented each other nicely. Dan who is from Eco Frame and Mirror, hosted our meeting at Eco’s new showroom. Eco was forced to relocate, across the road from their previous shop, which was destroyed in the February quake. With winter well on it’s way as evidenced with one of the colder evenings we have had in Christchurch this year, there was a tremendous turnout of members old and new. A qualified framer, Dan, discussed the intricacies of framing and the importance of getting it right. He talked us through each of the facets you need to consider when getting work framed, and the importance of framing your work, a point Margaritha reiterated later in the evening. Glass, mattboards, hinging, finishes all were thoroughly explained to the large group who attended. Dan stressed the ability to make an image look it’s absolute best when it is professionally framed and hung, and how this is advantageous to one’s presentation & sales in a portrait business. Margaritha has years of experience running a photography business, with her husband Peter having owned Beverly Studios for over 35 years. Beverly Studios was an already established business when they brought it, but knowing very little about running a photography business, Marg and Peter spent years learning and striving to create one of the most established portrait businesses in Christchurch.

Photos by Ron Lindsay

Marg talked to us about a number of different aspects of running a successful business, which included being visible, creating & maintaining relationships and printing & framing your work. There was a lot of discussion about the perception on a business and what is required to give a business presence in today’s society. In 35 years there has been a strong shift away from the store-front presence, to an online one. Although Beverly Studios building has recently been demolished, Marg is a true believer that the store-front presence is still more important than relying on an online one. Many pearls of wisdom were offered by Marg, from her many successful years of experience in running a portrait business.

In addition to our portrait focused meeting, we were also extremely privileged to have the opportunity the week previous, to attend two workshops by the award winning Australian photographer Mercury Megaloudis. Mercury gave us insights into creating award winning images, and the processes, which he goes through when creating his stunning images. He was generous with his information and knowledge. Heading towards the Iris awards, he gave us a lot to think about and take away to aid in preparing images for awards.

The Missing Links Written by Malcolm Somerville

If last month I looked back a bit, This month I will look forward a bit. As you read this, no doubt you will be in transit to Rotorua, anxiously waiting for results of your Iris Award entries. Or maybe contemplating the next few months in surviving as a business? This is the time of the year when photographers, particularly those in a highly seasonal sector such as weddings; do the wedding shows, do the travel, buy the new gear. It’s also when the opportunity can be taken to sharpen your act. If you have a strategic plan it is time to shake the dust off and see if it is coming true. If you haven’t it is time to make one that is long term so it encompasses all your life goals and values. And short term so it becomes a more tactical template. It’s time too, to take a look at the greater environment you are in, don’t just do photographer events. A really interesting site is the of www.tripwiremagazine.com which includes a free weekly subscription newsletter. It is a site that serves a wide web design and developer community but has some neat and very interesting tips and observations.

Of interest is an item on cinemagraphs a method of blending moving components within still images was introduced by a New York fashion photographer Jamie Beck, in collaboration with motion graphics designer Kevin Burg. Take a look at 40 examples at http://tinyurl.com/42gopuk.

Every day I get a short message from Seth Godin as a free subscriber to his blog http://tinyurl.com/olovc. Some are memorable, some less so. Today’s fits my theme perfectly: Building a job vs. building a business. “Either can work, both do, but don’t confuse them. The shoemaker/copywriter/plumber who seeks a regular itinerary of gigs is building a job, a job with multiple bosses at the same time there is no boss, but it’s still a job. You wake up in the morning and you do your craft, with occasional interruptions to do the dreaded looking-for-work dance. The entrepreneur is in a different game. For her, the gig is building the gig.” Finally it is fits my theme in terms of planning to know when one phase finishes and another begins. We are in the process of relocating to Wellington and along with all the real estate drama is the realisation that some of the things I have done have reached a planned fruition. I have chaired the stakeholder panel at UCOL for over 10 years. It began with the photography programme and for the last few years grew to encompass the full Design School... the BAVI - Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging. The programme functions very well, there is first class staff and a talented and widely industry recognised series of programmes and graduates. So I have resigned that role to more properly take on other roles. We all need to know what to discard and what to embrace.

Cheers Malcolm
