Presidents Report

Education in photography and Business Practices is a major part of our future if we plan to stay competitive in the world of photography. I have just had the pleasure of being part of the ‘Creative Asia’ photography conference in Hong Kong, where I was asked to give a lecture as well as run a couple of workshops. The best part of this was getting to meet and hear all of the other speakers on the programme. The topics covered included: ‘Advanced Photoshop Techniques’, ‘Being Profitable in Business’, ‘Creative Lighting Techniques in the field’ and one quite obscure lecture on the history of group Portrait Photography. I attended them all and came away having learnt at least one good idea from every one of those lectures. At the end of it all I thought - how great it was that all these lectures were prepared to stand up and share their knowledge with all of those people. It’s that same thing that is going to happen at our own Infocus conference in Christchurch in September, so it really shouldn’t be a big decision for you to make if you want creative inspiration and to improve your business. If you are serious about being at the top of your game as a professional photographer in New Zealand you should be there. The NZIPP Board and personnel have worked really hard to bring you more than just “show and tell” presentations this year. We have a wide range of high calibre photographers for you to see - which is no small feat. Look out for presentations from Peter Coulson, Marcus Bell, Peter Eastway and Steve Saporito. Both Peter and Steve also presented at ‘Creative Asia’ – so I can tell you first hand that they are well worth giving up your time and money to listen to and learn from. On top of that we have inspirational presentations from NZ locals - Esther Bunning, Nicola Inglis, and Isaac & Amber de Reuss. Plus we have included workshop sessions and a panel discussion, where you all can have your say. It will be a full on couple of days at a great location, with inspirational speakers. Your future depends on you being there, so book now and don’t miss out.

Commercial Directors Report

AUGUST 2012

I’m writing this on the first flight of three for the day, my final destination is the host city of the Olympic Games....in 2008, Beijing! I’m off to meet my wife and daughter, who have been on holiday for a month without me. It has also felt like a holiday for a month for me, at home, in Christchurch. It’s a great win-win situation that I can thoroughly recommend. As I’m not a gear head, the million dollar question is what to take. I don’t want to be disappointed and blame missed photo opportunities on not having the kit, but also don’t wish to be a camel carrying lots of unnecessary stuff in a hot humid city. In the end this is what gear I decided to pack... EOS 5D Mark III, EF 17-40mm f4L, EF 24-105mm f4L, EF 70-200mm f4L, Rode Videomic Pro, ND & Polarising filters (not that I’m expecting to see blue sky), GoPro Hero 2, Canon PowerShot G12, Canon TC-80N3 Timer Release & and an ioShutter (for time lapse control using an iPhone), plus a tabletop Manfrotto tripod with ball head. The whole kit fits in a small LowePro bumbag that’s so discrete I don’t think my wife will even notice I bought a camera along. I get to Beijing at midday the day before they arrive, and have a burning desire to get out and shoot some stuff for myself. Everyone I know who’s been there says it’s a fantastic city, so I plan to use my half day alone to play with the 5D Mark III and get to know it better, especially its video capabilities. Once the family arrive we have two more days including one up at the Great Wall, before heading back to NZ via Hong Kong. Now that I’ve told the world, I guess I have no excuses and will have to come up with something interesting. I may even get some material to enter the Iris Awards this year, for the first time ever! Watch this space.

Are we there yet? Do you remember driving on holiday with your parents as a kid...how the main thing you needed to ask (and were probably banned from asking...or was that just me?) was ‘Are we there yet?’ ‘Well are we nearly there?’ ‘How much further?’. It’s not just kids either...on long haul flights they have this thing called the air show (which is really stretching because honestly it’s not much of a show). And it seems to me the whole point of the ‘air show’ is to answer that question ‘Am I there yet? How far now?’ We need to know, we need to be able to pace ourselves for the journey right? So while I was obsessively watching the ‘air show’ (apart from contemplating its very optimistic name) I was thinking that the metaphorical photography journey is a lot like this literal journey. As photographers we feel this need to ask ‘Am I there yet?’. And if we’re not then we want to know ‘How far now?’ Sometimes it’s tempting to say ‘I walk my own path and I’m not going to the same place as you, and it doesn’t matter to me that I’m not there’. Of course there are lots of ways to get to the destination, but the main thing is they do actually get you there. There are lots of ways to become a qualified professional photographer, but the important thing is that we do have agreed criteria for what that means. You CAN check to see if you’re there yet. So if you’re also an obsessive watcher of the air show or you’re that kid who needs to know ‘Are we there yet?’, take advantage of a couple of opportunities coming up…if you don’t have a Q yet make it a goal. Pick an upcoming Q date (they’re on the NZIPP website) and work towards submitting. The process of selecting images can be very time consuming and thought provoking (and that’s a good thing). The process itself throws up all kinds of questions about ‘What is my style?’ ‘Can I gain a Q without compromising the way I work?’ and most of all ‘Am I there yet?’ The other opportunity to check your progress and measure yourself against the best is of course the annual Iris Awards. Details and online registration are now available on the NZIPP website. Wherever you are on your own journey, there’s so much more to be gained than ‘just’ a Q or an award…there’s the chance to see how far you’ve come and to set goals for the future. Wherever your ‘there’ is, it’s a chance to ask and answer that perennial question ‘Am I there yet?’

AUGUST 2012

Well it’s that time of year again! With only six weeks to go until Infocus 2012 happens here in Christchurch, it’s time to get editing and printing your best work. Our local photographers are excited, and very grateful for the love and support from everyone after a hard couple of years. The Composition team and the Honors Board have also been working very hard behind the scenes to get ready for the event. There are still lots of cool places and things to do if you get a spare moment or you are coming for an extended stay in Christchurch! http://www.neatplaces.co.nz http://popupcity.co.nz/retail-markets http://www.christchurch.org.nz/map Entering the awards is all about pushing yourself as a photographer and an artist, it helps you develop your own style and vision. While the motivating factor is always a possible win, if you don’t win - listen, learn and take some more shots! The process of critiquing your own work and selecting which images to submit is an invaluable lesson, that helps you improve your craft as a professional photographer. When selecting what images to submit, it’s a good idea to head along to your regional print judging event. Email your local Chair or Secretary if you are unsure on when yours is being held. While your regional critique isn’t the real judging it can be a good indicator of a successful image and also highlight areas for improvement, it’s a good way to test the water before printing and matting your final works. Be careful showing your selection to family and friends, people who you are close to are not impartial and will often tell you what you want to hear, the same goes for your facebook followers. Remember to get advice from more than one photographer. Some Quick Tips 1. Stick to the topic or category entered. 2. Read the rules and submission guide lines carefully. 3. Keep it simple with a clear message. 4. Tell a powerful story. 5. Consider the composition of your photographs and don’t be afraid to break the traditional rules when needed. 6. Be original & creative. The judges will be looking for images that reveal the unexpected. The art of seeing and being able to creatively notice the right moment, the unique colours and qualities that can be found in light. As well as noticing graphic elements such as lines, patterns, shapes, and forms and capturing the comical and humorous moments can also be helpful.

7. Avoid clichés and be careful not to over apply effect(s). 8. Finding an interesting choice of subject will help when creating something unique. 9. Technical perfection and strong vision. Can you make out the details in the shadows? Some photographs are unintentionally blurry, if the blurriness is detrimental to the photograph it could be marked down. The more technically perfect the better. 10. Study the winners but don’t copy! One more important thing to keep in mind about the awards - you’ll never know if you are a winner unless you give it a try - you can’t win if you don’t enter!

Good luck and see you there!

Honours Council Report

AUGUST 2012

Preparing your Entries for Online Registration 43 days and counting ... until close of entries (as of August 1st) It seems the excitement is really building for people out there, preparing their images for this year’s Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Print Awards. On the other side of the fence, Honours now has a great line up of judges, with a good response from invitations sent out to potential Judges & Chairs. In addition to our own high calibre judges, we have now confirmed a number of highly respected judges who will be winging their way across “the ditch”, including, Peter Eastway, Peter Coulson, David Paterson & Ian Poole. With numerous years of judging behind them all, & their high level of photographic experience & knowledge, along with their judging expertise, the awards judging will be educational to both entrants & our newer judges alike. Honours are excited & looking forward to having such a great lineup on this year’s judging panels. With the Online Entry Registration for awards entries now open, & just over a month until the closing date, this article will be a timely reminder about some of the rules & guidelines around registering & submitting entries for judging. Print Size • Photographic images must be printed no smaller than 18cm on the longest side. •

The largest print size accepted is 16” x 20” (406mm x 508mm) - this is the same as the mount board size.

For a series of two or more images on a single mount, the combined length of all images must be no smaller than 18cm on the longest side.

The only exception is for original Polaroid prints & transfers, where the Polaroid medium dictates the size of the print, in which case the image may be presented at its full size.

As part of the entry process, entrants need to register & pay for their entries online at www.nzipp.org.nz. This process requires entrants to upload digital files for all Print, Wedding Album, & Fusion entries. There are three parts to this: the first is attaching metadata information to the digital file, the second is the naming of each digital file, & the third step relates to the size, mode & file format of the file. Metadata Via the File Info menu, attach the following information to the file metadata: •

Document Title - your image title.

Author - your personal name, not your studio or business trading name.

Description - enter the category the image is entered into. In addition, add the names of any third party person(s), & their place of business, who have been involved in the production of the entry (such as postproduction assistance).

Description (Wedding Album only) - in addition to the information specified above, add the Wedding Album image sequence number (eg. WA1_Image1 etc).

File Naming While the file name used for uploaded images will be ignored, these can be used for your own identification purposes. This same information may be included in the Description field during the Online Entry Registration.

AUGUST 2012

The exception is for the Wedding Album & Fusion categories where digital files need to be identifiable using the following file name formats: - Wedding Album - JBloggs_WA1_Image1, JBloggs_WA1_Image 2 etc. - Fusion Award - JBloggs_F1, JBloggs_F2

Digital File Format Prior to uploading digital files, check that your files follow the file specifications below: •

Files must be resized to 25.4cm on the longest side, at 300dpi (3000 pixels)

RGB colour mode, not greyscale

JPEG setting 8, Baseline (Standard)

Registering your Entry Online In order to log into the Iris Awards Online Entry system to register entries, entrants require an Entrant ID/Membership number. •

NZIPP members - this is your NZIPP membership number.

Previous entrants - if you do not have/remember your entrant ID/ membership number from previous years, email web@nzipp.org.nz to receive your current Membership/Entrant Number.

First time entrants - complete the registration step first by clicking the Register link on the NZIPP website home page, & then follow the online Help instructions.

Once entries have been registered & paid online, the following series of forms & labels will be available to print off: •

The Print Identification labels need to be attached to the back, top left of the related print submission

The Tax Invoice, Return Address label & signed Declaration Form must be included within the print case along with the prints & CD/DVD’s.

Attach the Delivery Address label to the print case for sending. If you don’t already own a print case these can be purchased through the Online Entry process. Send your entries carefully packaged in a box or sturdy wrapping, & your entries will be returned after print judging inside your new print case.

We hope that submitting entries into the Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Print Judging Awards is only part of your involvement with the NZIPP this year. Alongside the Iris Awards is the Infocus Conference, Master Classes & Industry Trade Show. These events provide a phenomenal one-stop-shop opportunity for education, inspiration, professional development & networking, so we on Honours would really love to see as many of you as possible making your way to Christchurch for this year’s event. So, if you are planning on joining us in Christchurch, the judging schedule below outlines when each category judging will take place. Also, to avoid disappointment, we strongly recommend you register early for the Monday evening Iris Awards Dinner, a night that celebrates achievement, and contribution to the photographic industry. This year, in anticipation & preparation for the 2013 NZIPP Jubilee celebrations, we would like to encourage all those attending the Awards Dinner to don their suit & black tie or cocktail/long dress & join us in celebrating in style.

NZIPP JUBILEE PUBLICATIONS Next year the NZIPP is publishing a range of publications for the 75th anniversary of the NZIPP. To help build a history of the Institute we would like to track down as many of the Agfa Awards booklets that we can. These booklets were published with results from the early print competitions which preceded the Iris Awards. We aren’t sure when they started or finished, but we would like the opportunity to scan any existing copies so we can include them in our history. If you have any of these booklets stashed away can you get in touch with Fiona (E: info@nzipp.org.nz) with details of what you have available. In addition any photos you may have from earlier times would be useful (prior 2000), particularly NZIPP conference images. Please contact Fiona with a description of what you have. Regional Updates Upcoming Meeting‌ Auckland/Northland Regional Meeting Venue: TBC, Auckland Wednesday, 8th August, 2012

Auckland/Northland Region Fusion is one of the newest categories added to the 2012 Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards. With the popularity of HDSLR Video rising amongst professional photographers around the world, it has the potential to be a hotly-contested award. Ollie Dale, representing the NZIPP Honours Council, showed us the ins and outs of the new category, what the judges are looking for and the guidelines. He showed us samples of the winning Australian AIPP entries, to give us an idea of what is expected. In preparation for the Iris Awards, Sean Dick from Evoke Studio showed us the various papers available, and how to enhance our image entries. He showed us what papers works best for particular images. Ink jet printers have a wider range of colours they can print compared with chemical processes, and sometimes this can make a big difference to a colour image as well as the type of paper that is used. Sean explained how some papers absorb ink at different rates and the basic principals of the various colour spectrums. The last part of our meeting was our regional mock print judging. Thanks to Chris Traill, Harry Janssen and Ollie Dale for being our judges. Thanks also to those who entered their prints.

Regional Updates Upcoming Meeting… Canterbury/Westland Regional Meeting & Regional Print Judging Venue: TBC, Christchurch Monday, 20th August 2012 6:30pm

Canterbury/Westland Region July was another busy month in the region. We’ve continued to see a steady number of new members joining us and welcomed back some former members as well. So the Canterbury/Westland region is in pretty good shape and gearing up for Infocus! Despite it being midwinter, there is still plenty going on here. We kicked off July with an earlier than usual regional meeting, kindly hosted by Rob and David at Photonewzealand Stock Image Library. For many in the audience it was perhaps the first time that they had considered the option of stock library work in their business. There was plenty of interest in Rob’s information about stock library do’s and don’ts, and how best to integrate this sort of photography into an existing business model. Hot on the heels of this we had a double-header – a fine art printing seminar presented by amazing Michel Perrin. This was a really good old-fashioned, hands-on event thanks to Michel, Epson New Zealand, and Tracy & Mark from Photo Warehouse here in Christchurch. For those of us lucky enough to attend we can’t thank you all enough. Tracy & Mark made sure that there was plenty of equipment to experiment with and plenty of Canson paper samples available to print on. Michel’s enthusiasm and his sheer love of what he does proved incredibly infectious; and his interest in sharing his knowledge was welcomed by everyone attending. Michel even found time to demonstrate some portrait posing techniques and was in Christchurch long enough to see the start of that evenings Q workshop, before racing to the airport and catching his flight about 2 minutes before they closed the aircraft doors! “Thanks Michel” doesn’t seem quite adequate and we all look forward to seeing you down here again, very soon. On the ‘Too much ain’t enough’ principle, that day was capped off with a Q Workshop evening, for those looking to submit their Q portfolios in the near future. Bryan Isbister generously hosted this workshop at his Creative Images studio, and Bryan, Johannes van Kan, Richard Linton, and Lisa Gane were on hand with constructive comment, critique and advice on the images being presented. Many new members see the Q process as something to fear, rather than be challenged by, and so Q evenings are a vital part of the professional development process for Provisional Members and help de mystify and build confidence to do a Q submission. This coming month sees our annual Regional Print Judging. Held in the run-up to the Iris Awards in September. Details will be out this week on how to enter, so check your emails Canterbury/Westland. After that, we look forward to welcoming you all to Infocus in September in Christchurch, see you then.

Regional Updates

AUGUST 2012

Otago/Southland Region It was a great night for the Queenstown members of the NZIPP to celebrate the opening of the 2011 Iris Awards Touring Print Exhibition at the skyline gondola on Tuesday 10th July. Mike Langford opened the night with a fantastic speech in which he explained the purpose of the Iris Awards, and encouraged the Queenstown members to use the awards as a way to deliver creativity that they may not have the chance to express with paid jobs from clients. It was also a great opportunity to congratulate Jackie Ranken for her outstanding achievements in winning 3 categories and her Highest Scoring Monochrome print at the 2011 Iris Awards. The night then carried on with fantastic conversation and admiration of the images displayed. Each photographer having their favorites images in the exhibition, plus inspiring and encouraging each other to participate this year. With the upcoming Iris Awards, and new members considering what Q submissions to submit, there is a lot of photography ideas and inspiration bubbling in the Otago area. We are all looking forward to building a presence within the organisation on a national level.

The Missing Links

AUGUST 2012

The Missing Links Written by Malcolm Somerville

Innovation By Decree The current buzzword in enterprise of every size and shape is that of ‘innovation’ - almost by uttering it, one is propelled to the front of the class. It must be significant when a new government department takes it into their title. As if it awards their purpose and style as innovative “driving, demanding, recognising, encouraging”. Yet my recent reading on innovation and related activity is that quite different motivations and personal cultural values are present that result in innovative practice. Of three books I have read recently, the most recent (2012) and most thought provoking -and innovative in its own way: being essentially a long conversation between the two authors. Velocity. the Seven New Laws of a World Gone Digital. Written by Ajaz Ahmed and Stefan Olander it is a call to action best summed up at the end with “..... Today, good things don’t come to those who wait. But to those who move.” Have a peep at www.velocitylaws.com By coincidence another recent read (although published in 2010), also has seven guiding principles. The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs - was the second book on Steve Jobs by Carmine Gallo. The first was called The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs. ‘Innovation Secrets’ is a serious discussion, leading with many examples of style and culture and courage that have come to epitomise Apple Computer. At heart is a single focus, a simple philosophy that clarified, distilled, and simplified a product and every aspect of design, marketing, and distribution. There are many lessons to take from it, easily reinterpreted and transferable to most endeavors. It only requires passion and purpose. The third and also a 2012 publication, is by Jeffrey Phillips. ‘Relentless Innovation. What Works, What Doesn’t - and what that means for your business. His book is better as an overview and discussion of innovation and looks at what goes wrong as well as what goes right. The author is a well respected consultant with OVO Innovation, visit them at www.ovoinnovation.com As you know, photographers are operating in business, with clients, in communities, against competitors. We need to be aware of more than our technology, more than our costing and price compression, more than what we will be doing next year. Constant repositioning is not a luxury but a vital component of our practice. Gaining knowledge and skills to help you think creatively, disruptively, profitably may just be an innovative edge that brings some fun back too.

Cheers, Malcolm

Industry News Technical Requirements for Digital Passport Photos Earlier this year we wrote to you about our Online Passport Adult Renewal Service. The Department of Internal Affairs plans to introduce the service later this year. A key aspect of the new service is digital passport photos. This information: •

updates you on the photo standards for digital passport photos

updates you on the technical requirements for digital photos

provides more information on the timing of a pilot for the new service and what this may mean for you

Our Online Passport Adult Renewal Service will be available to applicants over the age of 16. Instead of providing a hard copy passport photo and attaching it to a paper application, adult renewal applicants will have the choice to use the online service where they will be required to upload a digital passport photo. Corporate Members

Corporate Members A special thank you to our Corporate Members for their continuing support:

This last requirement is different to the standards for print photos which do allow head bands or head coverings for religious or medical reasons. The online service is not available for customers who require an endorsement for reasons such as wearing head bands or head coverings because the department uses a specific process to issue endorsements where they are required. The endorsement service is not available on the online service. The Department’s Technical Photo Requirements In addition to digital passport photo standards, all digital photos must meet the following technical requirements: •

File type: Jpg or Jpeg

File size: Between 500kb and 10Mb

Dimensions: minimum 900 px wide x 1200 px high & maximum 4500 px wide x 6000 px high

Aspect ratio: 3:4 (Width: Height ratio in portrait)

The Department will provide tips to help you meet the digital passport photo standards & the technical requirements for digital photos on the passports website. If you have questions about the digital passport photo standards or the technical requirements for digital photos, please email our communications adviser, Michael Mead at michael.mead@dia.govt.nz .
