A week or so ago we had a general election. If you were born long enough ago that you remember a Prime Minister named Rob Muldoon then you will likely be a Baby Boomer or maybe Gen X. If you don’t know who David Lange was then you’re probably Gen Y. If you’re in the later category you’re almost 100% likely to know who Mark Zuckerberg is and also be on Facebook. Back to politics and about the same time that the media were analysing the Key/Banks “tea tapes” a likely scammer emailed virtually every photographer in New Zealand with an “opportunity” to get a big overseas assignment. Chances are this email is to extract money out of the victim. The old book a job, prepay for it and then contact you to say that they made an error and gave you too much racket. You refund some money and then find out that the original money was stolen. This scam usually targets wedding photographers. When these situations arise being aware of it early is important to avoid being conned. You may rely on a call from a colleague, an email, or magazine article for a heads up but chances are that the damage may be done by this time. Like it or loath it, social media such as Facebook, Google+ or Twitter offer a level of unfiltered immediacy in communication that traditional outlets can’t. Bill Gates (yes that guy from Microsoft) in 1999 wrote about how digital infrastructures and information networks can help get an edge on the competition in his book Business @ the Speed of Thought. If you aren’t already involved in social media it can be used as an ever increasing important tool in running a business today. As they say in talkback radio “long time listener, first time caller”. You can sign up and select exactly what and when you want to participate, the important thing is you are part of the conversation. I’m not suggesting that you say goodbye to face-to-face relationships with people, but it can be very useful in your business. If you do join Facebook, the first page you should “like” is www.facebook.com/NZIPP. Whether you’re online or offline, have a good Christmas & New Year.

Not long now before the big fella slips down the chimney. Laura and I live on a lifestyle block, and in the good old days when my boys were innocent and actually believed in Santa, we used to get sheep shit and a bit of hay and place it haphazardly about the fireplace . A couple of pieces of carrot with bites taken out of them, and the fantasy was complete. Reindeer can be messy creatures. When you have a memory like mine though eventually something has to give.
We always internalise everything, and store it away somewhere you think it’s hidden. It is not helpful. I thought I was generally pretty cool, but was pleasantly shocked (good to get a bit of R.O.I.) at all the thoughts swimming around in me. I won’t bore you any longer with the experience, but when I become more proficient at what I have learnt I will share more . If this resonates with anyone, feel free to contact me and I will give you the company’s web site and you can take it from there.
One day midyear the two of them were mistreating something expensive and I lost my rag. “ Right you two little ungrateful buggers that is the last time I’m going to buy you f…ing anything!! “ Their jaws dropped (not from the language, they are used to that), and they looked up at their mother whose withering look suggested something else was amiss.” But Dad Santa gave us that …… didn’t he?” I can’t remember how I discovered Santa was really just a retailer’s instrument, but every Xmas day I am needled about being the killer of dreams.
Remember Christmas brings loved ones together. Think of ways to make yourself the gift that your clients or other businesses can give to others . The power of giving is to be harnessed. Your gift is you. The client or business is unfettered in passing this along. They in turn feel good in giving something away that hasn’t cost them a cent. The recipient too feels good. They have received an intimate gesture (that portraiture inherently is), with the chance to experience it with a no risk approach. A complimentary (never use the word free) sitting and portrait. As a loss leader its there as an opportunity for you to wow your subjects with what you do.
The sprinkle of fairy dust on the window ledge indicating the tooth fairy had been was another little effort we went to. One night I could only find a fiver (ten being the normal contribution). I crept in to his bedroom, heart pounding with the effort of subterfuge as always, trying to slip the moolah under his pillow. The next morning after one such effort, we were at the breakfast table and the conversation went like this.... “ Bit of a tight arse last night Dad “ ” What do you mean?” I replied in my most innocent sounding voice. “ You’ve been waking me up for two years “
The visual manifestation of the love they have for each other is your responsibility to provide. Once having done so, the value of the result generally far outstrips the original offer. Let the images sell themselves with you as the professional guide. Make sure you are always present at the viewing and never let the images out in any form unless they are paid for. We are in the love game. This time of year is when we show it most. Silly really that some of us have to feel brave to find what is swimming all around us. Have a great summer, and if you are lucky enough to still have kids that believe, a little bit of shit goes a long way!!
” Why didn’t you say so? “ “ Not gonna get paid then am I “ Cynical little shit! Anyway, being the season for giving I thought a little bit about myself for once. Apart from the three and five wood ‘s I’m trying to sneak past the missus this week, I enrolled in an interesting personal development course. It was an intensive two day affair which forced me to deal with some deep personal baggage. It wasn’t a spill your guts out in front of everyone deal, but a learned technique, that as a tool will help me deal with the obstacles I have mentally created in stopping me from achieving. I do okay, but really should be doing ten times better. I have blockages that stop me from being brave. Cold calling in creating new business is a challenge for me. It’s crazy really because generally when I do I am successful. Why do I and I am sure many others, fear this process? Never mind just this hurdle, what about the myriad of other stuff that swims around in our heads?
Russell Hamlet NZIPP Portrait Director
It was actually seriously cool just sitting in a room with other people, who just by our mutual presence were being honest about looking for help with whatever. I paired off with a woman who was in a very high flying corporate job. I don’t mind admitting that tears flowed from both of us. It was kind of a meditative way of looking within, and although each of us shared some stuff verbally it wasn’t about that. The technique wasn’t about analysing the things that have and are happening in our lives, but actually dealing with the feelings they bring. A very simple and powerful technique that I can draw on whenever I feel the need.

What to do when it all turns to custard. And you’re lactose intolerant. The height of wedding season is just about upon us and I bet you can smell it’s sweaty, floral scented, adrenalin fuelled breath from here. Like diehard addicts we are hanging out for days and nights of editing, and album designing, and client meetings, interrupted only by weekly or twice weekly escapes from the office to shoot another one. We know in our heart of hearts that we are the toughest, strongest, most invincible photographers of all. Commercial photographers can postpone, portrait photographers can reschedule but not us…we will shoot that wedding no matter what. We know how important this day is to our clients, and we know that there are no second chances. Buy us a drink (yes please), and get us talking and we all have war stories about that time we shot a wedding with food poisoning, or a dislocated shoulder, or a [insert horrendous sounding sickness or injury]. Pah! A mere flesh wound…nothing stops a wedding photographer. Except of course that isn’t true. We wish that was true, but it isn’t. If you scratch us we do still bleed. If we book a wedding 12 months in advance we can in fact gestate a baby in that time (well the girls can…sorry guys), and find that the due date corresponds with the wedding date. We can drive very, very carefully (we all do right?), and still get hit by some other eedjit and end up in hospital. And then what? Then the tough, invincible commandos of the photography industry have to ask for help. And NZIPP is here to help, whatever help you need. Maybe it’s the shooting part you can’t do, but you can handle the editing. Maybe you can’t do either… you have to let people know or they can’t help you (and your clients). Phone a local photographer, phone your regional secretary, email someone, text, send smoke signals, or a pigeon if you must but please, please, please ask for help. Have a wonderful start to the season everyone…may your shade be open, your couples loving, and your celebrants discreet!

“Ultimately, my hope is to amaze myself. The anticipation of discovering new possibilities becomes my greatest joy.” – Jerry Uelsmann In recent times (yes it’s really only been ten or so years) photographers have had to adapt to the demands placed on them following the introduction of digital technology, and the use of Photoshop as the standard for postproduction practices. Some photographers embraced this in its early stages, and others took a little longer to test the digital waters. In the end the need to jump on the digital bandwagon became almost inevitable. The seemingly endless offerings of innovative products and services means the need to keep on top of these is imperative - if you aren’t able to provide clients with what they want there is always someone else out there who can and will. The latest of these offerings and the newest buzzword is FUSION. For those who weren’t able to make the Rotorua INFOCUS event this year to hear about and witness it, this represents the growing trend for the blending of still and moving imagery. Fusion represents another exciting time in the history of photographic imaging, and one that offers a whole new medium to engage in and entice your clients with. The Honours Council is currently working on developing the Call for Entries document for the 2012 Iris Awards. With the upcoming introduction of the NZIPP Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme, our aim for next year is to encourage and engage a greater number of professional photographers to enter the awards. The Iris Awards will be one way for members to earn points towards their NZIPP Accreditation. With this in mind, and for those enthusiastic photographers wanting to challenge both themselves and the boundaries of photographic vision and creativity, we are introducing a new award category. The Fusion Category will be incorporated into next year’s Iris Awards, following its introduction and success at this year’s Australia Professional Photography Awards (APPAs). The Fusion Category is aimed at encouraging photographers to explore and experiment with combining still and moving images. As with the print categories photographers are encouraged to utilise and demonstrate their own creative vision in both capture and postproduction, using this as an opportunity to add further learning (professional development) and skills to their photographic repertoire. Full details of entry requirements for the Fusion Category will be available in the release of the Iris Awards Call for Entries document in March 2012. We are excited about the new Fusion Category, as we feel it will provide an opportunity for a broader range of photographers wishing to enter the awards. We welcome your feedback on this new category, so either make a post on the NZIPP Facebook page to start up a discussion, or, as always, feed your responses and comments directly: k.davis@ucol.ac.nz This is the last PRO REPORT for the year, and with the festive season comes time spent celebrating with family and friends. But for many it is also a time to reflect on the past year and to plan for the year ahead. We hope that as part of this planning you challenge yourself and others to set some goals for entering the 2012 Iris Awards. You may ask why? The why hopefully comes from a desire to keep learning as well as wanting to set standards and be a part of shaping the future of the exciting and ever changing industry of photography.

Diary INFOCUS 2012 now!
Auckland/Northland Region A Tonic....... This year we were privileged to have two of Australasia’s most experienced and celebrated photographers at A Tonic, David Oliver and Johannes Van Kan who shared their knowledge and guided us through the skills required to succeed in the current market.
20 – 22 September 2012: Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards 23 – 24 September 2012: Infocus Conference and Industry Exhibition
David Oliver is a Grand Master of Photography and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. David started by acknowledging the work of the photography greats and his major influences such as David Moore and Graham Carter and explained the importance of looking back at what has been done before so we can move forward and have a clear direction of where we are going.
Kindly sponsored by:

David Oliver by Bradley Patten
To be held at The Chateau on the Park, Christchurch
David shared insights from his amazing career and believes there is still an element of luck when capturing iconic images. Some of David’s favourite images were captured by chance. David feels one must still recognise the opportunity as it is presented however. David carries is camera around with him constantly in case an opportunity arises. David noted the importance of high quality presentation of images in his work and shared that the value of an image increases when presented on premium papers. David also endorsed Epson printers and papers as products he uses.
Johannes van Kan by Bradley Patten
The constant throughout David’s career is the quality of service he provides to his clients. He is careful to explore and understand what they want and treats them as individuals rather than using a set system for each client. David said he has never had to ask for referrals as his clients are the best ambassadors for his business. The second speaker of the day was Johannes Van Kan. Johannes is a Fellow with the NZIPP and has won many awards including Photographer of the Year and Wedding Album of the Year. Johannes has been through some challenging times with the Christchurch earthquakes and losing the family home and studio. These trials have helped redefine what is important to him and his business. He has had the opportunity to start his studio and business again from scratch – deciding what to keep, what works, what doesn’t, what to let go of or do differently. Johannes says that looking at a photography business as if a disaster has hit can be very beneficial in defining core values which in turn can help appeal to the target market. He asked the attendees to consider what would be important to them if a disaster hit? What works in their business, what doesn’t? Johannes also spoke about image and how they are preserved by their target market. Are they sending the right message? Do your core values appeal to the core values of your target market?

Waikato/BOP Region Isaac & Amber De Reus - Perspective Photography
Announced earlier this month – Bruce Gabites, NZIPP member won Gold for a wedding album entry in the Kodak Gold Awards 2011. This is his tenth successive Kodak Gold Award in the Wedding Album Category. He has won a Kodak Gold Award in this category every year since it started - a feat unrivaled by any other NZ photographer.
It was great to have Isaac & Amber return to the Waikato/BOP for our November meeting & hear about their success in relocating to Auckland.

They streamline their business operation with Shoot Q software. This slots into their task list, & everyone at your studio can see their specific tasks to do as well as where others are at with theirs. With a client section as well, couples can add in specific details of their special day, what vendors they are using, view invoice & contracts, & make updates.
David Oliver by Bradley Patten
Social media & updating regularly their business blog & Facebook is paramount to Isaac & Amber (this makes you look busy to clients too!). Their golden rule is being positive with your comments & blog every client equally!.
Here is a TED video that Johannes used to help explain his point further http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp0HIF3SfI4&feature=player_embedded Johannes is well known for his beautiful, emotive images and feels that beauty can be found in the most subtle gestures or briefest moments. He says beautiful images convey an emotion or a moment where as a ‘pretty’ image just looks good without the story or emotion attached. He spoke about how to find the ‘beautiful’. The Auckland Committee would like to say a big thank you to David and Johannes and to the awesome teams at Aarque and Epson for making A Tonic possible. You guys rock! For more information about the great products and service available from Aarque and Epson, please visit their websites:

A very effervescent couple they had us all captivated during their presentation. This duo love to photograph weddings & are very passionate about what they do. Their use of supplemental lighting in the field produced stunning results. They still do the everyday lighting but their creativity for when natural light isn’t good (ie strong, harsh at the beach) or even to compliment or enhance the natural light around has them creating WOW images.
Image © Isaac & Amber De Reus
They regularly have ads on Facebook, which they can target to their demographic so specifically to get results. Around 70% of their business is from referrals (mainly Facebook). Use it to portray the image you want to sell. Find the line between personal & professional, & no whinging! In theme with Halloween, Isaac & Amber wrapped things up with a horror story. The one where 2 little photographers lose 5TB of data from a hard drive fail & a server died as a result. Although it is standard procedure for us as professional photographers to back up - be thorough - back up everything regularly. Include your personal photography work, your documents/data & emails not just your client work. Waikato/BOP will be announcing our regional Photographer of the year at our Christmas Dinner & Awards night in Hamilton, Tuesday 6th December. In the spirit of giving, we encourage all attending to please bring a can of non perishable food to then be donated to the Foodbank. Our theme is “bad taste wedding guests”...

Alan Cox, managing director of LeftClick (www.leftclick.com) was our guest speaker this month. LeftClick is a locally based web company, which specialises in helping companies grow by making better use of their online presence. Alan presented us with some useful statistics about current use of the internet, both by potential clients/customers and businesses themselves. The use of internet searching these days is huge, by next year over 43% of all retail sales are expected to be influenced or made on the internet. What was even more interesting is the greater than linear growth of use of mobile devices, and therefore the changes that need to be made to ones website to be readable on a web device. He likened a website to a funnel, where you get a lot of people landing on a website, but to get to the conversion & action steps, there is a lot of filtering out, & very few make it through the funnel & out the bottom. Therefore attraction is important to keep people on your site for longer than a few seconds (as well as fast loading time), for conversion to happen you need to prove yourself to the customer/ client by ticking the boxes on a number of critical factors, e.g. desire, credibility & trustworthiness. And to create action, it needs to be easy. As Sue Bryce pointed out at Infocus this year, keep it simple & don’t bog those potential customers down with too much choice, or too much information, but give them enough to push them to the next step, contact. Google is what the majority of us all turn to for web searching these days, & there are a number of ways you can ‘advertise’ via Google. Alan discussed a few of these and the pros and cons of each. The ability to increase yourself on a Google search and the advantage of paid advertising and what you need to do to increase the likelihood of appearing via either on any given search. Alan wrapped up the evening by briefly talking about social media and the actual cost and effectiveness of it to a business. It’s a time-consuming form of web presence and needs to be executed efficiently and one you need to be committed to.

On Monday 28th, Nicola Inglis and Karyn Fleet each gave half day presentations to 30 participants in Dunedin - some of whom had come as far away as Christchurch and Queenstown. Karyn spoke about her family portrait business in Te Awamutu, with an emphasis on her stunning new-born and child photography. She also gave lots of practical advice about marketing and how she gets her ‘look’.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at our Christmas break-up on Monday the 12th of December at Chinwag Eathai on Victoria Street.
Christmas Party DATE: Monday, December 12th, 2011 TIME: 6.30pm - 8.00pm LOCATION: Chinwag Eathai 131 Victoria Street Christchurch COST: Nibbles supplied *Drinks can be purchased at the bar
Nicola presented beautiful wedding photography examples and lead us through the work-flow of her successful Hamilton based business. She covered many different aspects of her business to give us an over-view of everything from package pricing through to final presentation of albums and DVD slideshows. With the high quality of their work, their professionalism and enthusiasm it’s no wonder they’re both running busy practices. At the end about half the participants stayed behind while Nicola discussed the importance of becoming a member of the NZIPP and about the process of obtaining your Q. Thanks Nicola and Karyn for being so generous with your time & knowledge, and to Donna for making it happen.

DECEMBER 2011
The Missing Links Written by Malcolm Somerville
“Ok, look this way, in command and humble, don’t take crap and listening to everyone, casual yet dignified, a nice smile with serious overtones, move with world leaders yet of the people. Look into the lens, look away. Hold that!” Click. For the last six weeks as I drive around and opened newspapers I have had the opportunity to gaze at a group of portraits which to most are a critical component that at personal level means a job, to others a nations success or failure. What a variable execution. Most consistent with some design style overall is Labour, very red but a coordinated look and execution. Greens feature more conceptual photography, pictorial with messages at several levels, National looked like a not quite there PowerPoint slide... with portraits ‘plonked’ in... differing head sizes, colours not quite right. Maori were stronger, ACT shouted. Many had the forward projection and sincerity of real estate agents photos ..... probably some were? After each election and local body election I wonder what was the power that photography bought to the final decision process. How much and to who did it lift their profile, strengthen their message, somehow keep on target with their ‘brand’ value. How many did the photo actually destroy? Maybe there is a Marsden Research http://tinyurl.com/7umfl6b grant waiting to be applied to this? Now the event is over, for better or worse we have much the same government until this time in 2014. About the same time when voters will have paid off the 50 inch TV’s they bought for the Rugby World Cup. The next few weeks will be a lot of “I told you so” as we all settle back into buying SOE’s, polluting rivers, granting mineral rights to protected lands and bidding farewell to family and friends at the airport. This all leads on to thinking about things that we do have the power to create and influence. As a professional organisation we are tasked to serve the best interests of our members, that they are strong in commercial terms, that they are strong in technical and creative terms and that there is a form of inspiration and fellowship happening.
Now Sydney based he has taken on his own mission to “.... highlight the impact of climate change and the damage we are all doing to our planet, and to showing how we are able to mitigate that damage by implementing carbon-neutral technologies. He plans to spread his message through a series of exhibitions, books and speaking events that showcase his beautiful, yet tragic imagery”. I guess we all have thoughts on what is of value once we have a roof over our head, food on our table and our children on a good pathway. We then look further ahead and we look to the side to make sure our future is safe, our ‘fellow travelers’ are fine and that at some point we can look back and decide we made a positive contribution.
Cheers Malcolm
As individuals we probably fit into every category that was voting last weekend, some quite active.... even contributing photographic skills to enhance their preferred party. Perhaps as an organisation there is an opportunity/responsibility to more formally ‘gift’ the communication power we have to a cause or charity that may be an ongoing or rolling scholarship such as the James White Overseas Study Award that has a third party benefit. Two years ago the NZIPP were involved in a book to celebrate Daffodil Day for the Cancer Society. This was powerful and valid application of photographer skills and passions to a good cause. I know many photographers who do clearly see their skill set as a responsibility in shining a light on topical issues.... one I and many of us know well is Michael Hall. www.michaelhall.net
