Hi everyone For some of us we get a bit of a break over Christmas but I know for many of you it’s a very busy time with weddings .Those smart operators who can leverage families getting together for celebrating the festive season can create great memories for them which can result in multi layered sales from the one sitting . Personally I’m feeling pretty knackered from working really hard this year . When I took on this job I figured I had better start walking the walk in my own business to prove what I was preaching can actually happen . We were already ticking along ok but I might have overdone the marketing and now we are manic ! New staff are required and we are booked till March . There is no doubt that with a little effort in the right direction your business can take off . I have had some neat feedback from people who are making this effort , surprising themselves with good numbers from happy clients . With this year coming to a close and a new one around the corner make some small challenges to yourself . Don’t try and build Rome in a day . Buy a year planner and some coloured pens and reward yourself visually with your recorded efforts . This is a great time too to build your skills if you are looking to submit for your Q’s or entering the Iris awards . In fact we should each and everyone of us try and take that Gold image in all our efforts this season . Just remind yourselves that your beautiful wedding couples or character filled families are all models paying us ! I want to thank you all for belonging to the NZIPP and being the kind of people that I and your board so passionately want to help in all our quests to be effective and happy professionals . Merry Christmas to you all , be kind to yourselves and remember to “ look twice and shoot once “ .
kind regards

Executive Directors Report
Here’s something new for Pro Report, a message from the ED. Be forewarned, I am about as much of a wordsmith as I am a photographer so please don’t expect to see my by-line in here every month. In fact, if you make it to the end of my first attempt you may well be grateful that I won’t be a regular contributor. On a personal note, it is December again already and another hectic year full of life’s highs and lows is coming to an end. If you are anything like me, as you hurtle toward the New Year, you are looking at all the items that are lingering on your “to do” list and considering making a ridiculous attempt to clear them before Christmas. Experience has taught me, eventually, that this is absolutely not worth it, the 1st of January is just a day like any other and no-one actually checks that I have cleared my list. Working for an organisation whose member’s business is capturing moments has reminded me that memories are precious, and that I should take every opportunity to make them and record them for my own family. So, if it is a choice between cleaning out the garage (currently number 4 on my list and really needs dealing with) or having a water fight with my children, the water fight is going to get the nod every time. For the NZIPP 2014 has been, as my 7 year old likes to say, epic. The Veteran Portrait Project, although not without challenges, was a resounding success and drew more positive media attention than the NZIPP has ever received. Those who volunteered for the project have been exemplary ambassadors for the Institute and for professional photography in general, and should be really proud of the contribution they have made. I have been inundated with phone calls, emails and letters from the many veterans and their family who are thrilled to receive the portraits and want to offer their thanks, which is both heart-warming and humbling and I feel very lucky to have been involved. The NZIPP Board has spent time this year developing a strategic plan that fulfils the aims of the Institute. Within the plan the Board have set key goals for 2015/2016: •
To raise the profile of Professional Photography by providing a point of professional difference.
•
To provide greater opportunities for professional development ensuring professional standards are maintained and improved.
•
To ensure that all communication with the NZIPP Community is effective and done through the appropriate channel.
•
To develop a robust and efficient organisational structure that ensures sound governance and responsible management.
•
To achieve a 10% increase in membership.
As part of the strategic planning process the Board has identified some initiatives that will be implemented in order to achieve these goals. Work has already begun on these, but 2015 will see things really start moving. Looking at the first key goal, “to raise the profile of Professional Photography by providing a point of professional difference”, the NZIPP Board acknowledged that the current membership structure and CPD/ Accreditation system failed to achieve this, hence the changes that were put forward at the 2014 AGM.

Executive Updates
These changes were accepted and as of 1 April 2015 the new membership structure will take effect, and a new CPD process will be put in place. The information on pages 12 - 15 should fill you in on everything you need to know, do, or not do ready for 1 April 2015. The new structure is designed to make being an Accredited Member of the NZIPP a desirable and valuable achievement, it is not designed to disadvantage any member so please don’t panic about the changes. If after reading through pages 12 - 15 you still have questions or concerns, please email info@nzipp.org.nz. Continuing on with the goal setting theme I want to set some goals for you, our members, so that we can work together to ensure the NZIPP remains strong, relevant and successful. 1. Be involved in your region and on a national level. Just paying your subs won’t give you full the benefit of being a member, you need to put some effort in – go to meetings, sign up for workshops and volunteer to help out. This is one of those times that you will get back more than you put in if you make an honest effort to be involved. 2. Start planning for your annual subscription payments so that they get paid on time or email finance@nzipp.org.nz to arrange a monthly payment plan. 3. Get your backsides to conference! Some exciting new ideas and plans for Infocus 2015 are well underway, so keep an eye out for cheap flights to Queenstown and start putting a bit aside each month so you can take advantage of the Early Bird rates. 4. Give feedback, good or bad. If you love it tell us, if you don’t love it tell us that too. We would rather you told it to us straight, and be given the opportunity to resolve the problem, than have members complain quietly to their friends and/or just resign. Finally (thank goodness I hear you say), on behalf of the Board and staff of the NZIPP I thank you all for your support throughout 2014, and I look forward to another year as part of the NZIPP family. Have a wonderful summer everyone!

Commercial Directors Report
A huge thank you to the 87 members that filled in my survey monkey. Some very interesting and useful information, and clear directions for moving forward, has come out of it. I am looking forward to implementing some relevant resources that we can build on into the future. The greatest need for information out there seems to be around marketing your business, pricing and licensing. This was followed by work flow and advanced photo shop, stock photography also had a high interest level. Some plans on the drawing board…. •
A one day commercial seminar in March and April 2015
•
A “member only” repository of typical examples of commercial pricing and licensing. Ie. somewhere to go for a starting point.
•
A dedicated “member only” online question and answer area with a specific panel of experienced commercial photographers who can provide competent and realistic advice (as opposed to face book where I have seen some pretty dubious advice offered on occasion.)
There is a lot more info and feedback in the survey that need to be worked through and it would be great to incorporate some of these topics into regional meetings. This is something I am keen to discuss with the regional chairs. You may remember a few issues ago I highlighted the battle that Geoff Walker (the Wairarapa photographer who photographed the terrible balloon accident) was having to protect his copyright (in the images) in relation to a ruling by the Coroner to allow TVNZ access to them. The case went to the high court and unfortunately was lost - it is now up for appeal.

NZIPP News NZIPP WWII Veterans Portrait Project Update Following the mass mail-out of presentation prints to the veterans we have had some lovely feedback, like this message from Mr. Stephen Sharpe in Auckland‌ Thank you for giving me my portrait, and also for the time and skills donated by your Associates in producing what is clearly a work of art, and delivered in such careful packaging. It will be a valuable addition to our family archives. The NZIPP ANZAC Promotional Committee (consisting of Tony Stewart, Jason Naylor, Catherine Cattanach, Kaye Davis, Gino Demeer and myself) got together via Skype recently to look at ways we can work alongside the RNZRSA and other interested parties to find exciting uses for the resource we have created with the WW2 Portrait Project. It was agreed that we would like to see a national exhibition at the very least, and that Wellington would be a natural starting point for national exposure. The plan is first to put together a simple high-level overview document that describes the project and incorporates images of photographers shooting, volunteers processing and of course a sample of the veteran portraits. This document will then be used to gain the interest of suitable organisations and sponsors in the near future.

Auckland/Northland Region The silly season is well and truly upon us, and it’s been busy times here in Auckland. There have been many events hosted by our sponsors as well as members. Canon hosted a Workshop run by Alex Wallace exploring the endless possibilities of Speedlights, our friends at CR Kennedy’s brought over the legendary Peter Coulson to once again wow Auckland photographers with his unique and simplistic approach to lighting. And some of our members have been busy, in particular Ilan Whittenberg is currently running an exhibition at Silo park and Richard Wood is due to host his lighting and creative workshop later on this month. There are already a number of events planned for the next couple of months starting with our legendary Xmas party. A big thanks to Holly, Carmen and Lisa for organising this we should be in for an awesome night, you don’t want to miss this one. We are also going to try something a little different for our January meeting, we want to start of on high so we will kick things off with a BBQ and movie night. And finally February, make sure you book in the 11th as that’s the date for our Whangarei / Northland road trip. We will have a full day of speakers lined up as well as a mini trade show and exhibition. Further announcements to follow shortly. Just to finish off on behalf of the Auckland committee we want wish everybody a safe and happy Xmas, as we look forward to some wonderful events in the new year. Warm regards

DECEMBER 2014
Regional Updates Waikato/BOP Region WOW - December is here already and our annual Christmas Party is fast approaching at Macu Restaurant in Tauranga! I’m looking forward to seeing who wins the Waikato/BOP Regional Photographer of the Year and the winner of the Pinnacle Award for the highest scoring print at the Iris Awards. BIG thank you to Jodie Beattie and my wonderful wife, Suzanne Todd-McKeown, as they have put a HUGE amount of work into this year’s Christmas Party – I think we have one of the best NZIPP Christmas Parties in the country! Last month we had another successful consecutive seminar in Rotorua with NZIPP Photographer of the Year Richard Wood talking us through his journey from his university days to now – such a wide variety of “out of the box” thinking! Australian photographer and business coach Bernie Griffiths took us through the last half of the seminar, which was hugely informative, covering aspects such as networking, support, business planning and advice on getting referrals through the door – THAT’S WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT – ONCE AGAIN!! Kim Howells took out the highest honour of the night for the November Regional Image Judging, which was kindly judged by NZIPP photographers Kylie Lyons and Richard Wood. Alana Dresner presented the NZIPP check for nearly $3K at the Tauranga Breast Cancer Walk in October, so that was VERY AWESOME! Only “8-months” away is the NZIPP Iris Awards in August 2015, so make a point of saving your best images to a folder – ITS NEVER TOO LATE TO START! If you’re doing some filming, there is a new category “Short Film.” That’s all from me - Suzanne and I are back into the swing of the wedding photography season – so I must get back to EDITING – EDITING – EDITING!

Nelson/Marlborough/Tasman Region 2014 saw the re-emergence of Nelson/Marlborough/Tasman as a functioning part of NZIPP. It has been very satisfying joining with a keen group of local photographers from all kinds of backgrounds coming together and aiming to make our region(s) part of the NZIPP family again after a hiatus of some years. Katherine Williams has played a major part in this resurrection and our thanks goes to her as well as Rachel Callander, Tony Stewart and Kylie Lyons who have all visited and supported us with great workshops and encouragement. We are still finding our way and, as we establish ourselves, will refine what we offer in the way of workshops and events. Our membership numbers have more than doubled and we have at least two recently qualified photographers which is fantastic. Our final meeting of 2014 will include a NZIPP Nelson/Marlborough Photographer of the Year competition which although is tentative at this stage, we hope to make a real fixture in the Nelson art’s calendar over the next few years. We have opened it to all photographers in the area but there is a small fee per entry for non-members. Entries closed Dec 1 so we will see how many we receive and report back in the New Year. We will be meeting at a local restaurant and have a celebration of this competition and to see us off in fine style for the holiday period. Our main goal for next year is to have a van-full of us attend Iris and InFocus in Queenstown in 2015 and we look forward to meeting many of you there. In the meantime if any of you are coming through Nelson make sure you look us up. Have a great wedding season and holiday period with your loved ones!

Regional Updates Canterbury/Westland Region What a fantastic meeting last month!! The committee worked hard to bring together 8 enthusiastic, creative, diverse and motivating people to talk for 6 minutes and 40 seconds as 20 images were shown on the big screen. That works out to 20 seconds each image, so we called this meeting 20/20 Chit Chat. We had Penny Nichols tell us about her amazing experiences & successes over the last two Iris Awards. Also how she created a couple of her gold award winning images. Stefan Roberts, tutor at CPIT, enlightened us all about his pin hole camera work. Some of his images had exposures of up to a year! (See image below). He also mentioned just how liberating it is to stand very still and very naked in a field in order to create an amazing image (image right)!! Olivia Spencer-Bower invited us into her world being a New Zealand rep for the Paddle Ferns, (Canoe Polo), making us all proud to be kiwis. We saw just what she went through to keep her mind and body in top form leading up to the competition. We were very lucky to have John Suckling, Chairman RE:Start the Heart, here in Christchurch. As he took us through images of the rebuild in central Chch we all began to realise just how tight a schedule the builders, tradies and shop owners were on leading up to the grand opening of our central city mall. Designer Tim Stephenson showed images of varies projects he has worked on over the years, including creating a Stargate (from TV show Stargate SG7) and his home which has survived over 10,000 earthquakes and still standing strong even though most of the properties around him have fallen. We were also lucky to have Greg Webb from CRKennedy join us for the meeting and he gladly shared with us some of his beautiful portraits of people shot in different ways, (he loves shadows!!). Jess Dick is a local year 2 student studying professional photography at CPIT. Projects she has worked on this year included photographing organs, like internal organs in jars not the piano type organ!! And finally Emma Brittendon, a local photographer who moonlights as a court jester and does a lot of impromptu work with the Court Theatre. She explained what it takes to be a great impromptu actor by following a few golden rules, which we can also relate nicely to when photographing our clients. Thanks to all speakers who took part, it was an amazing meeting and really fabulous to get to know a little more about our local photographers and industry people.

Tell us a little about how Bella Creative begun. In Jan 2009 I was made redundant, it was always our plan that when we had kids, I would go out on my own. But when I was made redundant, my awesome supportive hubby told me to just do it, rather than look for a new job, to do my own thing. We were accustomed to living on 2 pretty good incomes, and the expenditure to go with it, so we made some changes, and I made the jump and started my own business. I was pretty lucky as I had a bit of a cliental base to work with from freelancing, and there was no way I could have done it without Dan’s support. The name – Bella. My name can’t be shortened, so my parents always called me Clarabella, and I was pretty much only know as Bella in my hometown by all my friends; the Creative, I needed something that would take in everything I did and could offer, so Bella Creative was born. What is your main industry focus at present? Mostly commercial and portraits, I used to shoot weddings, but with my crazy work schedule, adding in an extra 20-30hours a week of wedding work was just stupid. I was losing out on summer, and anything that vaguely resembled family or social life. So I stopped offering those, and will do the odd wedding here and there. Your first photographic love is? Polaroid, I remember buying my first Polaroid camera at 15, and buying screeds of packs of film. If I remember correctly it was $1 per Polaroid then, which was expensive compared to normal lab processing. What is your favourite piece or body of work…. Tell us a little about how that came about? A photo of my eldest daughter, I have a love hate relationship with it, it was taken last year, 24 days after she had second and third degree burns to 30% of her body. When I took the photos, she was 2 months off turning 3, and showed the greatest courage and wisdom. We were going through a massive array of emotions with her, she would go from happy, to sad, to pure anger in a space of minutes, and it was a crazy time! I have a set of images from this day that portray all those emotions, I sat her down, and we talked about what happened, and clicked away while she spoke. I entered one of those images into Iris this year, and was quite stunned at the comments from the judges, they got her, even though they didn’t know what was up or what had happened, they all pretty much nailed her emotions and what was behind her eyes. What they didn’t know, is what she had just told me as I took this particular shot... “Mummy I don’t want to be burnt anymore”. I hate this image because I shouldn’t have had to take it, but it is also my favourite image cos it shows just how god damn strong that kid is!!!

Member Profile Continued... “Walk before you run, learn as much as you can.”
What do you think the greatest fears you have faced have been and how have you overcome them? Workwise - Definitely starting my own business, I’m pretty cruisy, and take things as they come, but this scared the living hell out of me. What if I couldn’t do it, if I didn’t succeed? What channels do you get most of your work through? I don’t advertise, 95% of my work is word of mouth, I have fantastic clients, who love me and love what I do, and aren’t backwards at telling people about me. Have you had any mentors along the way? Yes, my parents, they are my biggest mentors, I’ve grown up in a business environment, my parents are pretty amazing, and have taught me everything I know business wise, whether they realize that or not, they have given me amazing business learning opportunities from when I was quite young. Pretty much everything I know design & photography wise, I am self-taught, and they have given me the life skills to get out there and learn what I want, when I want. They are what I aspire to be like. My husband/kids are my other mentors, they are teaching me that it’s not all about work, and that I need to stop and have some fun along the way, and teaching me how to do it. Has design led to photography or photography led to design? Design has most definitely led to photography. Even though I have always had a camera in hand, my Dad was an amateur photographer, and they always let me loose with cameras, and I would hate to think how much $$$ over the years they paid out for all my film to be developed, Design was where it really all started for me career wise. I found I needed bits and pieces for design work, so would photograph it myself, I didn’t really take it seriously till a few years ago. Do you find design and photography complement each other well? It totally does when it comes to my company, I can give my clients the full package, full branding, websites and commercial photography. It all works in really well together, and I get to keep a good handle and control with everything that’s going on. My clients love that they can come to me as a one stop shop. How is your photographic style influenced by your design style? I’m not sure, I’m not really a deep thinker, but I get asked all the time how I make it happen, I think it’s just ingrained in me, and I don’t realize it. What pieces of advice do you have to anyone starting in the photographic business? Walk before you run, learn as much as you can. Buying a new camera will not make you a better photographer, no matter how much you convince yourself it will. Never stop learning.

Member Profile Continued... Where do you take inspiration from and what do you do to keep it fresh and evolving? Honestly, I have no idea, stuff just pops into my head, and I either roll with it or I don’t. I have a million pieces of paper floating around on my desk and notes in my phone of random ideas. So…. what tools of the trade can you not live without? My PC, for the last 15 years I have had custom built PC’s, I could not do my job without it! My Wacom tablet is a godsend, and I love my Sony cameras to pieces!!!! And what’s currently on your wish list? Workwise – nothing really, I just buy what I want when I need it. My major wish list.. New bathroom and kitchen, but until I can make a firm decision on how they will look it won’t happen. Tell us a little about your working space? I work from home, I have an awesome space with external access for clients. I’m only one block of town, so I don’t see the point in having another space at this stage. It works really well, with a baby and an almost 4 year old, I work long and random hours and I don’t have to leave the house to do most of it. I have an L shaped desk with 2 computers setup, and the laptop ends up sitting in between them so I can have skype meetings, I’m surrounded by printers and paperwork, and am trying to keep my office in some kind of order. Do you shoot just for fun or is it all about business? Mostly business, but I try and do a few shoots a year for me. It’s a time thing, eventually I plan to have more time to shoot just for fun. What exciting things do you have in mind ahead? I’ve just launched a new business, Little Rocket Design & Illustration, this is a bit of a creative outlet for me design wise, seen all my design is for others. It’s my design equivalent to shooting for fun. I hope to include a bit of photography into it too when I get my A into G. Expanding Bella Creative is another thing, this won’t happen for a few years, once my youngest is at kindy full time. Right now I need another me on board, but need to suck it up and work the hours I do, until the kids are a bit older, and I have the time to train someone up to be my clone.

What’s In My Bag...?
DECEMBER 2014
What’s In My Bag...? Sarah Beaufoy MNZIPP - Waikato/BOP Hi All, I’m Sarah of Beaufoy Imagery, based in Mount Maunganui. My photographic work is family portraits, weddings and a bit of light commercial photography, so I like to have a simple, intuitive kit that enables me to concentrate on connecting with the clients I work with. I photograph on location so all my gear is kept in a large backpack (Lowepro Pro Runner 450) that I take in the car, and from there I put what I need into a smaller bag depending upon the job. My go-to for most situations is the Boda lens bag, which is ugly but practical, having great storage pockets and interchangeable straps. On long shoots I wear it on my hips so I can have the weight off my shoulders and have up to two cameras around my neck, and on shorter family shoots I wear it with the shoulder strap. My assistant will wear it on a wedding day and have their hands free to be able to hold a reflector or diffusor. I have been shooting with Canon gear for over 20 years and I can’t see myself ever changing … would be like going from an Apple to a PC ;-) I use the Canon 5D mk III with a Black Rapid glider strap and my all time favourite lens, the Canon 50mm f/1.2mm prime. On the second body I swap between the 24mm prime and the 70-200mm zoom, or a few other lenses. I really enjoy the dreamy quality of the Lensbaby and plan to use it more. I keep two 5D camera bodies for backup – and yes I have had to use them… like the time my mk III with 50mm fell off the strap and hit the tarseal… both cracked open and died. 8gb CF cards are kept in dust/water/shock proof Gepe cases that fit in my pocket and Think Tank Pixel Pocket Rocket wallets hold spares and full cards that are clipped into the lens bag for safe keeping. As a mostly natural light shooter I use various reflectors and diffusors at just about every job, I also carry speedlights and a portable handheld video light with a battery pack for creating more dramatic wedding images. The next addition to my kit will either be the 35mm prime lens and/or rebuying the 16-35mm wide, which I traded in to buy the 24mm prime…. I really miss the focal range for capturing close documentary shots. SO there we have it.
