EXECUTIVE UPDATE
President’s Update Ollie Dale F.NZIPP I, NZIPP President NZIPP Accredited Professional Photographer
The NZIPP is feeling exciting right now. After a 18 month period of change and ups and downs for the leadership of the institute, it feels from this side of the fence that progress is finally getting some traction. I remember being in a staff meeting at Telecom in 2000 where the then CEO Theresa Gattung told us “Change is coming, but the bigger and older the company the longer it takes to shift momentum.” This is very evident in our case - while those who have volunteered to steer this ship analyse and strategise and attempt to implement, we can sometimes feel like we’re paddling furiously against the current for no gains. But our key objectives, being strategy and governance, Regional interactivity and a smarter, more amazing conference all seem to be coming together with gusto. Firstly, the conference for 2019 - the events team lead by Sarah McGregor have really brought together a smart event, utilising the Academy Galleries to allow more breathing room and a much more engaging trade area to be developed. Trade keep us going, and our sponsors are 100% behind industry growth and success, so it’s wonderful to be able to provide them with a platform to better interact with us all. I have a feeling that after 2019 our event will be regarded even more highly by all sectors of the industry, and that’s an exciting place to be. Regionally we’ve also seen a tightening of the relationships between regional reps, and long may that continue! While Chris Traill steps aside from the Auckland Committee after an incredible 16 years of service, we are excited about what’s about to happen in Auckland! We can’t say anything until everything’s locked in, but we are very excited for what’s coming and we hope Auckland’s energy spreads through the entire photographic community. Operationally we’ve also seen Sarah McGregor step down from the Board in order to take on the interim role of Executive Director, and this should mean that the Board is able to rely on Sarah to be the source of delegation of operational activities to be able to free the Board up to concentrate on Governance and Strategy. With Sarah at the helm we’re able to immediately make advances without needing to onboard a new person or business into the role.

PRO Report / Magazine of the NZIPP
For those who weren’t able to attend the AGM or Policy and Planning meeting in Auckland last month, the other major changes to the Board were Michael Watson stepping down and Gino Demeer being appointed. We appreciate what they’ve given and continue to give for us all. We’re still looking for others to be able to join us on the Board, so if you’ve got business experience, and think you could add value to a Board more focused on Governance, please get in touch! Merry Christmas to you all, and I’m very excited for what 2019 will bring!

NZIPP AWARDS DISTINCTION UPDATE We know that many of you have been wondering what has been happening with the awards points and Honours Distinctions, so thought it might be timely to update you on what has been happening and how the NZIPP Award Distinctions will work going forward. The Honours Team are on track for the introduction of the new NZIPP Awards Distinction system in 2019. This follows many months of work (with many more to go) that has gone on behind the scenes in preparation for implementing the new system. The survey feedback we received from members has been invaluable in setting the final pathways, criteria and stepping stones for the new system. We are currently still working through the transition, a process that has taken considerably longer than anticipated. This involves exporting every individual entrant’s awards data (many going back to 2004) and
applying an algorithm (that was developed for us by mathmatical whizz Jody Janssen) that translates each person’s current awards data into the new system. When this process has been completed a review and final check will take place to confirm all data and the award level achieved by an individual is accurate. While data transition process is continuing toward completion work is also about to start on incorporating the new criteria and award conditions into the Judging IT system. This step will be undertaken by DesignerTech, with the support of Michael Watson. When the IT component has been completed, next comes the input of entrant data into the system. The final stage will involve the testing of the system prior to the 2019 award registrations open (June 2019) to make sure it all works as required.
THE NEW SYSTEM - MERIT POINTS There are several components to how the new system works, the first of these is the scoring ranges judges use at the NIkon Iris Awards event. From this, members of the Scoring Range

SOME CLARIFICATIONS There are one or two misconceptions around earning merit points, so to clarify: •
The merit points earned, in relation to the number of Bronze, Silver and Gold awards achieved) by a person who is either an NZIPP Affiliate, Provisional or Accredited Member are never lost.
•
To be awarded/presented with an NZIPP Awards Distinction a person is required to be an NZIPP Accredited Professional Photographer.
•
An Affiliate or Provisional Member may earn a maximum of 5 merit points. Points earned while an Affiliate or Provisional Member only contribute towards the Associate Distinction.
•
To earn merit points towards an NZIPP Master of Photography, or higher, person is required to be an NZIPP Accredited Professional Photographer.
•
Accredited Members of reciprocal overseas organisations who run a similar awards programme are eligible to earn merit points and to be awarded/ presented with any of the NZIPP Awards Distinction level.
•
Having acheived a Distinction level, and meeting all the above mentioned conditions, to move to the next level a person must also have earned a minimum of 10 merit points within the last four year period.
THE FOUR YEAR PERIOD RULE The following two tables illustrate how the four year period rule works. Scenario A:
Scenario B:
In this scenario, despite the person only needing one more point to reach the 15 specified for the Master level, they actually require 5 merit points in 2019 to be awarded their Master, as the points earned in 2015 fall outside of the “four year” time frame. Though the 2015 points do still contribute to their overall merit points tally.
In this scenario, the person only required 2 merit points in 2019 to be awarded their Master, as they had met the minimum 10 points within the “last four year” timeframe requirement.

THE OLD AND THE NEW There are always going to be “concerns” when adopting a new system, and the new NZIPP Awards Distinction system is just that, new, and points and levels achieved under the old system will still be recognised. A significant change within the new system is in replacing the term Fellow (and the Fellow levels) with that of Master of Photography and the various Bar to Master levels, meaning no more Fellow awards will be presented. There was overwhelming support for this move in the survey undertaken. The change subsequently based on two factors: first, that the term Fellow is generally related to a high level affiliation a person may have with an organisation, or awarded in recognition for the service/ contribution made to that institute or organisation; and, second, that the term Master (of Photography) provides for stronger recognition in the eyes of the general public. In order to acknowledge any person who has achieved the distinction of Fellow under the old system, and is no longer active within the awards, please be assured you will be entitled to continue with the use of the term Fellow in recognition of your achievement.
“
For those still immersed in the awards with the title of Fellow, you still get to keep your Fellow medal, however when attaining your “next” level you will be required to adopt the new system. The current issued Fellow awards will form part of NZIPP’s history of achievement. We certainly hope this information makes things a little clearer for everyone! While there is still much to do towards meeting our own deadlines with all this, we do ask for your continued patience. As soon as we have the data finalised and checked, if you are already on the “ladder of earning merit points” we will be contacting you via email with information on your individual standing within the new system. In the meantime, please allow us the much needed time to work our way through the needed changes by refraining from contacting us to ask questions about your own specific status. As soon as it is completed you will be the first to know. Instead, keep busy planning your entries for 2019 as we all know how fast the time goes! We look forward to catching up in 2019.
From all of us on the Honours Team, we wish you a joyous and safe Christmas, New Year and holiday period.

A FEW WORDS FROM THE SPONSOR What can I say about the recent workshop with Richard Wood except “Wow!”? I had the chance to go as Queensberry’s representative, and the event was packed. Richard took us step-by-step through a creative journey, inspiring our imaginations, and encouraging us to step out of our own shadows and push the boundaries of what’s in and what’s outside the box. It was a powerful message and well received, as Richard gave us a detailed account of his award winning images, and the tools he used to create them. Richard demonstrated his shooting style in a live photoshoot with found objects collectively arranged, and using as a model Yuki, one of Queensberry’s IT team. Yuki says he enjoyed the experience — another plus!

Once he’d taken the original shots, helped by the audience holding and moving props, Richard demonstrated his Photoshop skills by transforming two images in under 10 minutes each. The editing, from start to finish, was truly breath taking with each step carefully planned and executed. Richard also runs his own workshops and on the evidence of this event I would highly recommend them. Merry Christmas from everyone at Queensberry! Amy Cope Amy Cope NZIPP Master of Photography Accredited Professional Photographer www.amycope.co.nz
How long have you been a photographer and what sparked your interest to become a photographer?
What gear do you most enjoy using at the moment, and why?
I’ve been photographing professionally since 2014 (photographing weddings), but mostly just a side-line to my fashion work until 8 years ago when I started photographing newborns.
I use a 5D MK IV with a 24-70mm lens. I also own the 50mm and the 35mm Sigma Art lenses and love that they are such sharp lenses. Another lens I love is my 100mm L Canon Macro, as I adore macro shots and use it in every session.
How would you describe your photographic style and how it has developed over the years? Clean, simple, fresh. It’s probably become even more clean and simple over time as I use fewer and fewer props and focus more on baby.

Can you tell us a bit about your business and how you make it work for you? My target market is Auckland mum’s who love photography and can see the value in high quality artwork. I currently use a contractor to make phone calls for me which has been hugely helpful in following up leads and enquiries. That’s something I often find I don’t have as much time for.

What has been your most successful marketing platform? Do you advertise in magazines/attend expos?
How and where do you find the inspiration for your photography?
Facebook has been fantastic for my business, right from the start, and despite the changes in Facebook it is still really successful for me. I have artwork up at midwives which helps and Google is also good. Each year I also have a stand at the baby show, but this is probably less successful when you look at the expense of the expo, so per booking the cost is higher than other [marketing] methods. But to me it’s just another way to reach clients and adds to keeping my business name relevant and known.
I spend a lot of time on Google looking at old artwork, renaissance paintings and old style photographs. I may not use that inspiration in my everyday work but find that looking at the way they lit and posed their subjects is fascinating and inspires me with my awards work.
What do you see as the ingredients for success with photography? What have you found that works for you? I say this all the time when I teach and whenever I’m interviewed - good lighting makes for successful photography. If you don’t know your lighting, no matter how well you pose someone, be it a baby, child or adult, they will never look nice if the lighting doesn’t flatter. I also think that if you’re working with children you need to know how to interact with them and make them feel relaxed in front of the camera. With newborns it’s a case of having a warm room, white noise and a lot of patience.

What has been the most memorable photograph you have captured, and why? The photo below is by far, out of all the newborn photographs I have taken, my most memorable. Mainly because up to that point I’d never had a baby with such incredible eye contact, and he was only ten days old. And of course, his hair is probably the most amazing hair I’ve seen on a baby. That photo still gets a lot of comments from clients who see it on my website.

What is your favourite image you have shot recently? Can you describe its creation in regards to location, lighting, and what the image means to you? I’ve been photographing mums and babies for a book I’m currently creating “A Mother and Her Baby”, subtitled “A Celebration of New Zealand’s Future Leaders”. This book is designed to raise money for KidsCan NZ Ltd. I’ve been photographing babies from 0-10 months with their mum’s and have loved catching their expression and love for their mum. I adore Jack’s smile in the image on the previous page where the mum is kissing him. It’s nice to be photographing some older babies and seeing the little personalities that come through. The image is photographed in my studio and is lit from behind with my light bouncing off the white wall
We’re really proud to have spent another year as a partner for the creative community of New Zealand, and in particular, a partner for the members of NZIPP. Thank you for your commitment to the photographic community and for allowing us to stand besides you!
What has been your biggest challenge as a photographer? How have you overcome it? I did find at the beginning that it took a long time to save up to get the gear that I wanted. I used what I had (started with a Canon Rebel and a kit lens) and slowly bought new camera/s lenses over time. I’ve also purchased lighting gear over time and added to it when I could manage. As well as the many, many, many buckets, bonnets, wraps etc that seem necessary when you’re a newborn photographer. I find I’m at a point now where I don’t need to add so much to my collection.
Blair Quax Professional Services Manager Nikon New Zealand
I also photographed newborns in my lounge for 6 years, which was challenging because I had to constantly keep my house clean and tidy, and with 3 and then 4 young kids of my own this was a huge challenge. I had to set up my gear every time and then pack it down again at the end. I’ve been in my studio (downstairs in our home which was purpose built for me) for 18 months now and it is seriously a dream come true, I couldn’t be happier with it. But it took a long time to get my business to the point where it was financially worth us putting a proper studio in our home. If not a photographer, what would be your career of choice? I have a degree in fashion and worked in the fashion industry for 10 years along side photographing weddings. I also taught fashion for 2 years at UCOL and loved that. I decided though after having kids that I couldn’t work the hours required to succeed in the fashion industry as I wanted to be available to spend time with my children. What awards have you won? I’ve won many awards at the Iris awards ranging from bronze through to Silver Distinction, but not the illusive Gold as of yet. I have also succeeded at becoming an NZIPP Master Photographer with a bar to Master.

Do you have any advice you would share with aspiring photographers? Learn your camera, learn your lighting and have fun playing. Mistakes are a way to learn what works and what doesn’t. And sometimes mistakes can result in our most favourite shots.

What dreams and goals have inspired you to succeed in the Photographic industry? I’m not sure I had dreams/goals to succeed in the photographic industry as such, but to succeed in business. I’ve been self-employed since I was 18, having had a small clothing label, then a knitwear label, sold cloth nappies, and wraps for wearing babies. I’ve contracted within the fashion industry for many many years as well as my photography. When I finally decided that photography was my biggest love I wanted to make it hugely successful, and with having seen what works and what doesn’t in business I had a fairly sound mind to know that it was ok to charge what I was worth. So, I think my dreams and goals have all been based around creating a successful business, it just happens to be a photography business and something that I love so I’m very lucky in that respect.
