Presidents Report

FEBRUARY 2013

Welcome to an exciting New Year and the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography’s 75th jubilee. Who would have thought that Professional Photography in New Zealand would have been formalised 75 years ago … and 25 years earlier than that of Australia, who are only turning 50 this year. With this being such an important year for us in historical terms, we are planning an even bigger and better Infocus Conference in Auckland, between Sunday 04 August and Tuesday 06 August. Along with this will be our biggest ever trade exhibition – showing off all the latest in photographic widgets and gadgets. So mark it in your diary to be at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland for this not to be missed series of events. On the Sunday evening the 04 August 2013, we will be celebrating our Jubilee with a special event. If you have ever been a member and have friends from that association, then this is something that you just can’t miss – watch this space for more details. Before the conference and the jubilee event, make sure you both enter and attend the Institute’s ‘Iris Awards’, which represents the cream of New Zealand Professional Photography. If it’s your aim to say to the photographic buying public ‘Look at me’ then you just have to enter. If it’s your goal to learn from the best in the country then you need to attend and listen to the best photographic judges in Australasia. Now is the time to start planning. It’s the time to start putting your award winning images together and the time to book your airfares and accommodation. August will be here before you know it! Turning 75 is a great thing and the recording of it is essential. Many of the people who pioneered today’s Institute have long since passed away, but there is still both visual and written material left behind as a legacy to remember them by. If anyone has material of any type that would aid us in expanding what we have and help make that recorded history even stronger, then we would love to hear from you.

Cheers,

Mike Langford Hon F NZIPP, GMNZIPP, Hon F AIPP, MAIPP NZIPP President

Portrait Directors Report

Happy New Year! Here’s to 2013. The NZIPP Board of Directors have been working hard to improve the current Q process and have been trialling a new marking sheet, that helps members get a clear idea on where they are at with their work; Below professional standard, At professional standard, Exceeds professional standard. One important NEW change that takes effect from the 6th of February 2013 with the Q Portraits is that we now require your work to be mounted instead of submitting loose prints. We felt that the standard of submissions had been disappointing at times due to the fact that members sometimes haven’t been taking the time to print their work. As a professional organisation and as artists, we want to encourage our members to present their work in a professional way like we do with the Iris Photography Awards. The bonus is that each member will be left with a great looking portfolio piece to show their potential clients. To help save on costs, we have made the mounting dimensions the same as the Iris Photography Awards so you can chose to reuse the mounts. If you don’t feel you will be entering the awards just yet, there are some great inexpensive alternatives that Bound to Last, Queensberry and Whitehouse Wedding Albums offer too. On another exciting note, Jono and I are expecting our first baby in late April! So unfortunately that means I am resigning from my position on the Board. I have really enjoyed working with the team and I’m going to miss my hands on involvement with the NZIPP - it’s been a great six years from Regional Committee Member, to Regional Chair, to NZIPP Portrait Director. I encourage all members to get involved with their regions, as you will get back from NZIPP what you put in. It would be nice to see some younger members stepping up to help their regions. I will be leaving you in the excellent hands of Karyn Flett, who is up for the challenge of Portrait Director and has a wealth of knowledge and experience!

Wedding Directors Report

FEBRUARY 2013

I recently did something I thought I’d never do…I called talkback…I feel dirty just saying it! In the wake of this story [link to http://newsfeed.time. com/2013/01/13/wedding-photographer-sued-for-missing-the-kiss/ ] hitting the headlines here recently the afternoon’s entertainment, oops I mean conversation, on Radio Live was a bit of rabble rousing about why wedding photography is so exorbitantly priced and what a rip off it all is. Well someone had to say something. And by virtue of being the Wedding Director and because Mike Langford was away (yes, I tried to palm it off!) it became my job. Firstly I think it’s a mistake to try to convince people we are worth what we charge…at least overtly. When Mercedes want to sell me a Mercedes they don’t do it by telling me in mind numbing detail about the costs involved in producing said car. They show me their car, make it look cool, and allow me to imagine how much more awesome my life would be if I owned one. And once I want one they tell me how much it costs. They don’t apologise, they don’t discount. They just allow me to want it and then I’m left to decide how much I want it. I see wedding photography the same way…once you know you want it you’re left to decide how much you want it. Let’s face it, there is a photographer servicing every market from free to $20k…the clients have the power to choose the price point (and the skill, service and style point) that matches the value they place on their wedding photography. So when we’re asked ‘why do you all charge so much?’ it’s tempting to go straight to the answer about the costs and the time and the… blah blah… no one cares. I think it’s much better to be honest and say ‘Well, not every photographer does charge so much and if you can’t tell the difference between the cheap one and the expensive one, then you should choose the cheap one’. Our job is to stand out of course, to create a unique body of work that inspires the kind of emotional reaction that we all know loosens purse strings. Our job isn’t to argue, plead and justify our price…our job is to be so clearly worth it that the right people don’t even get involved in a debate on Radio Live. When they book you and they’re explaining their decision to their (Radio Live listening) grandparents you can bet they won’t be talking about the hours you put in they’ll be talking about how your work is beautiful and they just knew they had to have you the first time they saw your website. And how NO ONE else can do what you do. And that’s priceless.

Honours Council Report

Working together … in 2013! “There are no hard and fast rules for achieving creative photography, but one thing is certain, those who produce some of the most creative images have great passion for photography, and along with this a good number of years of practice and experience.” Kaye Davis (adapted from a statement by Hongkiat Lim) After a good break, the NZIPP wheels have started to grind again, with lots of enthusiasm and excitement needed in order to face the challenges ahead – with the aim of providing value and meaning in belonging to the organisation. As the NZIPP celebrates its 75th Jubilee this year, it will be important for us to look back at the development of professional photography in New Zealand. In doing this we need to acknowledge all of those who have contributed throughout this time to bring the industry to where it is today. In addition, there are those who are currently working to lead the industry through the challenges faced within the industry today, and, a hope that many will follow to keep this wonderful industry, and the NZIPP institute, alive for the future. To ensure the NZIPP has the leaders of the future we need to strengthen the organisation now, not just through increasing membership but by also encouraging greater involvement among current members. By becoming more involved this provides opportunity to strengthen your own business, and this involvement can come through: attending regional events and meetings, entering the Iris Awards, supporting our sponsors, attending Infocus, offering your support at both a regional and national level, supporting other members through sharing your knowledge and experience, expounding the value of being a member to non-members, educating the public through your own business in the benefits of engaging an NZIPP professional, and, providing positive input and feedback to the organisation. As with any organisation, participation generally starts at the bottom, firstly by becoming a member, then developing skills and knowledge along the way to climbing the organisational ladder. Whether you are new to the NZIPP or have been a long term member, many will have a hundred and one reasons not be involved – I don’t have anything to offer, I’m too new and don’t know anyone, I’m too busy, I don’t like committees, I’m too shy etc. (Perhaps you have other reasons you can share with us?) News Flash: The quickest way to finding value in our/YOUR organisation, the NZIPP, is to be involved, to be a part of shaping “your” future and the future of professional photography in New Zealand. This can be from a small thing, such as replying to a newsletter or survey, to a big thing, like taking on Regional roles & climbing that ladder to be a future President of the institute. The following comment from Tony Stewart (yes, the now Honours Council Tony), who at one time hesitated himself, sums it up: “I often reflected as Regional Chair, that if you looked hard enough there is always a reason not to be involved … Yet, we wouldn’t get anywhere if that was the case, and more importantly need to press folk on how they could be involved in whatever small way. If they look to their left and to their right, they will see folk doing a lot for the institute. Replying to a newsletter/survey is hardly a big commitment, but if all folk were to do it we would be on fire! Sometimes it just takes small actions to contribute hugely.” PRO REPORT Member Magazine of the NZIPP

Honours Council Report Continued

FEBRUARY 2013

The reason I a write this article is to encourage everyone to be involved, in whatever small or big way. So, how can you help us on Honours? The Honours team are starting off the year by reviewing some of the awards categories in the Iris Awards Call for Entries document along with initiating changes towards ironing out some of the bugs in the judging system. We are seeking feedback on the Fusion Category, introduced at the 2012 Iris Awards. So, when you receive an email with the link to our online survey click on this and answer the five (yes, only five) survey questions. Alternatively feel free to click on the following link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3NMXDCK Replying to this survey will only be a small commitment, but if all members (and non-members if they feel they would like to contribute) were to do this, it would provide us with some valuable information on the direction to take the category. If you have a passion for photography, this passion likely also extends to the photographic industry as a whole. So, if you have some ideas on how things can work better for you we would love to hear them: k.davis@ucol.ac.nz.

Kind Regards

Kaye Davis - FNZIPP, AAIPP, MCGD Chair of the NZIPP Honours Council On behalf of the NZIPP Honours Council including: Ollie Dale, Blair Quax and Tony Stewart.

NZIPP Accreditation

FEBRUARY 2013

NZIPP Accreditation Accreditation Q&A What is the point of accreditation? NZIPP Accreditation has been developed in response to identified weaknesses in the existing Q (qualification) system. Firstly photographers could gain a Q and it remained theirs for the rest of their life, without any further monitoring to ensure their work remained at or above Q standard. Secondly, the Q system alone only monitors photographic output and it was felt (quite rightly) that there was a need to recognize NZIPP photographers who undertook ongoing professional development, in all areas of photography and business parctice. The NZIPP is all about improving the standard and recognition of professional photography in New Zealand and accreditation is an important part of this. How does it work? There are two parts to gaining NZIPP accreditation; one shows your ability to meet NZIPP’s photographic standards (through the Q process), the other demonstrates your continuing professional development (CPD).

Which things count towards CPD points? How can I earn enough points? Have a look at the NZIPP Accreditation categories which can be found in the Members Info/Accreditation Requirements section of the Members area on the NZIPP website (you must be logged in to see it). What is the timeline on points collected and how long are they valid for? The CPD points are tied to the financial year not the calendar year. Points earned now gain you accreditation for the year from 1st April 2013 and that accreditation is valid until 31st March 2014. For simplicity this is referred to by the year number in which the MAJORITY of the year falls, so the year from 01/04/13 – 31/03/14 is referred to as ‘2013’. However accreditation has been awarded ‘early’ to those who reached the required 100 points before the 31st of March, this just means that these people effectively get more than 12 months ‘mileage’ out of their first 100 points. Once the system is in its second year this won’t be as noticeable.

Member Profile Kate Groundwater Your website: www.stillwatersphotographynz.com Facebook: https://www.facebook. com/pages/Still-Waters-Photography-NZ/132720213406850 Camera and accessories brands: I am a Canon girl so shoot with a Canon 5DmkIII as my main body, & the 5D classic as my backup. Both are still to be named. What type of photos do you take? In the summer I am mainly a wedding photographer. Then throughout the rest of the months I transform into a family & portrait photographer. I would say the “style” of my images are timeless & quite romantic. What do you love about the professional photographic industry? There are sooo many things I love about it. Being part of the NZIPP is right up there. Our Otago/Southland group is like an extended family & everyone is happy to share their knowledge base with you. I also love that being part of this industry gives me the opportunity to work one day a week (unless there is a back to back wedding) in the summer. This provides me with time to get out & enjoy the Otago summer, & be home to watch my 19mth old daughter grow up. Something that makes you grumpy? Hmmm good question. I’m a pretty easy going person so it takes a bit to make me grumpy. Actually I lie, unorganised family photos sessions at weddings do drive me crazy. Website or blog site that you enjoy? Probably very cliche for a wedding photographer, but I love Jasmine Star & will always click out her posts. Other than her I love to look at Kimberley Cheyne Photography, Heather Ellis Photography, Jessica Jones Photography, Rachael Kelly Photography, & Jim Pollard Goes Click. Are you a collector of anything? I used to be a collector of pets. At one stage I had one rabbit, a Guinea pig, two dogs, three cats, one calf, & a horse. Now I have a child... Name one thing not many people know about you: Hmmm, another good question. Maybe the fact I used to be a life drawing model. Not many people know that.

Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Having no responsibility & getting to go back to Taranaki every summer holidays. Oh wait, thats two things. Maybe the Taranaki one I miss the most then. Regional Updates Upcoming Meeting… Auckland/Northland Regional Meeting Venue: Waiheke Island, Auckland Date: 20th February, 2013

Auckland/Northland Region No doubt everyone is back into the swing of things after the festive season. I hope you all had a relaxing break. We are very much looking forward to the upcoming events of 2013 here in Auckland. Of course there are the Jubilee celebrations, the Iris Awards Exhibition opening and our monthly meetings. We don’t usually have a meeting in January, but last Wednesday we had a casual catch up. It was a great opportunity to have a chin wag and talk about the coming year. For our February meeting we are going on an excursion to visit our Waiheke members. Emma Hughes will lead us on a mock bride and groom shoot covering posing and shooting in direct sunlight. It’s a practical session so attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras. Next Blair Quax will talk about his photographic journey from second shooter to 2010 Wedding Photographer of the Year and becoming a NZIPP Fellow. After that we will attend the “Island 5” Exhibition opening at Cable Bay which showcases winning Iris Awards from Phillipa Karn, Emma Hughes, Lauretta and Blair Quax and Alice Doig. For those wanting to make a day of it there is also the world famous Headlands Sculpture on the Gulf showing. If you are interested in attending the Waiheke Trip you can read more about it here. There has been one change to our committee. We have welcomed Harry Jansen onto our Auckland committee as the official newsletter and communications extraordinaire. He has done a fabulous job on the first two newsletters for the year and we are glad to have him on the team.

Wellington Region Welcome to 2013, our programme for the year is falling into place with confirmed presenters and events almost happening as you read this so watch this space. A new regular item will be an introduction to our new members, the first being Anna Munro. Cheers Jason Naylor Wellington - Acting Regional Chairperson

A short Q&A Profile of our newest Qualified Member Anna Munro What is your website: www.wellingtonphotographer.net List some of your favourite camera gear, and at least one surprise item in your camera bag: I recently expanded my kit to include a Tamron 24-70 and Nikon 135 F2, but I still love love love my 50mm f1.4 in most situations. I call my d700s my babies, and never let anyone else hold them. Surprisingly, I always carry gummy bears, and tiny plastic dinosaurs to win over two year old boys. What type of photos do you specialise in: I love capturing natural moments. I especially like it when people forget I’m watching and let all of their love show on their faces. Kids under 5 are my target demographic, but I’m also shooting a lot of weddings at the moment! What is your formal/informal photography education: I have a Graduate Diploma in Photographic Design (with distinction!) from Massey University. I have also been to some brilliant workshops in New Zealand and America. Name some photographers who inspire you: Kelsey Gerard, Tim Coulson, Kate Parker, and a million other talented people who photograph life in a way that makes my toes tingle, including NZ’s own Danelle Bonhane, Peta Mazey and Rachael Brown. What do you love about the Professional photo industry: I was so scared to come to my first NZIPP meeting, until I realised everyone there was at least as shy as me! Not to mention lovely, helpful, inspiring and welcoming. Before I joined I had this idea that the industry was a really competitive “in club”, but it’s not like that at all. What is something that makes you grumpy: The marmite shortage is really starting to get me down. Is there a website or blog that you enjoy: There are too many to keep track of! I am constantly inspired by my facebook page feed. www.letthekids.com is a goodie... Are you an avid collector of anything: I have a minor obsession with things that are adorable. Any toy or ornament that looks me in the eye in a second hand shop gets rescued. I also have a terrible weakness for all things ‘cat’.

Name the last book / magazine you read: The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O’Farrell (highly recommended!) Name one thing that not many people know about you: I have a degree in Linguistics, and I studied law before realising I was far too creative to memorise tomes of legislation. Name one thing that you miss about being a kid: I used to go down to the pet shop, and spend hours looking at the kittens and the fish. I haven’t had time to do that for a while. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go first and why: I’d like to say India to photograph the colours, the culture, and the people; but honestly I’d kill for a relaxing holiday in the islands doing nothing but snorkelling and sunbathing for a week or two. Canterbury/Westland Region December saw Trey Ratcliff in Christchurch for a one-day workshop on postproduction and the event proved a great success, bringing nearly 90 keen photographers from around the country. It was a full day starting with basic techniques and moving onto more advanced ones as the day progressed. As well as being knowledgeable, Trey is a relaxed and entertaining speaker - if you have the opportunity to attend one of his events in 2013 then I would strongly recommend that you make the effort. Thanks Trey, look forward to seeing you here again!

Trey Ratcliff Christchurch Seminar

It was good to see the event well supported, Christchurch is still a challenging place to get good photographic speakers to come to and we have been quite lucky to have had some very good speakers come through in the last year. It is very important that regional members continue to support those speakers that do come through and hopefully this is becoming easier as the photographic industry performance improves here in Canterbury. Our industry interacts with a wide variety of others and so is a good barometer of how the business situation is in Christchurch especially. Things have definitely taken off, especially in the last few months and most members are reporting boosts in their activity levels. 2013 promises to be a strong year for all of us, with increasing opportunities presenting themselves. Christmas was marked by a sad event, the passing of Garry Senior. Garry was an important part of the local photography industry and I remember him from my earliest days in Christchurch photography, as well as from more recent conversations since becoming Regional Chairperson. It was good to see so many locals turn out to pay their respects and share their stories. Gary will be missed.

Moira on Google Plus

Our region has members spread out over a large geographical area and the google plus hangout tool is one that we are looking at utilising for future meetings so that all members have the opportunity to attend without always travelling long distances. This will become even more handy in the winter months when travel becomes even more difficult. This first trial was a success and members of all other regions are invited to join us for future meetings. Here is what Moira Clark had to say: •

Great experience, first time user, and found it easy to use.

Thanks Emily, Jackie, Mike and members, you made me feel to welcomed and part of the meeting.

Can see this being an important part of future meetings!

Plans are underway to relaunch an annual competition between Otago/ Southland & Canterbury/Westland. I first heard of this competition in December while in Christchurch and am keen to speak to any members who are also keen to get this relaunched. Members used to meet once a year in Timaru and have a friendly print competition between the regions. There was even a trophy which was seems to have been last awarded in 1996!

16 Most Popular Photographers Online

(according to Google & includes our very own Sue Bryce & Anne Geddes) Ask someone who the most popular photographers are, and you’ll probably get the usual list of classic names rattled off to you. The thing is, times have changed. The ways in which people find and consume their photography have moved on from the days of LIFE magazine. It’s all about Google rankings these days. Here’s a list of the most popular photographers according to Google. Of course, there are some of the classic names on this list, but there are also some names you would have never thought should be there. Some of these popular photographers are savvy with digital and social media; others are simply so great that people continue to write about them. Find out who they are below. Do you agree with Google? Click here to check out the complete list.

The Missing Links Written by Malcolm Somerville

“ I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” - BRUCE LEE

Resolving better outcomes.... Two months latter ............ wedding photographers frantic, commercial photographers rested and reconnecting as clients restart. Another template of a year in front of us - busy, Iris awards, busy again then Christmas! Just like last year. Obviously a few seminars, new stuff to test and buy, some promotions to do, but pretty much same as, same as. What we all need are interrupters - game changers, character builders ..... frights? Why? Today I was on a mission to buy a new freestanding stove for my daughter’s house in Lower Hutt. She lives overseas and had simple requirements: full size fan boosted oven, heated warming drawer, four elements and a warranty. Came down to a Fisher and Paykel and a Westinghouse. Then as all things are equal who had best installed price? Came down to Noel Leeming by a whisker and the nudge to purchase being FlyBuys . Imagine if I was asked to arrange a wedding photographer for a daughters wedding. If I had limited knowledge and some key needs set out, date place and time, an album, a DVD of images. Of course the same cost driver appears if I have a commodity need only and no other attributes to think about. What should be the things that influence the decision.... probably being a qualified member, maybe payment options, a guarantee, maybe FlyBuys even. What stops me in my tracks and gets me on side? The emotional and creative talent appeal that may influence the bride may not influence me. The message has to be to unhook the wedding photography from the commodity wagon. That not all wedding photographers are the same thing.... not just a stove. Christian Sandstrom of Sweden http://www.christiansandstrom.org/ has developed a deep knowledge and viewpoint on ‘disruptive technology’ and how it influences industries and adaptive change.

His presentations show his particular research into the imaging industries ... Hasselblad, Kodak and others. How they saw (or didn’t see) changes ... what they hoped would go away. Of course they are larger than the average studio and of course the challenges are different, but look at the process’s and motivations and note how fast it changes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXHWw0SPQzc&feature=player_ embedded Just as you should try to create an ‘Iris Gold’ each month, try something disruptively bum kicking fresh and different each month. Not only in a creative sense but in a business sense ... your advertising, your packaging, your banking or even the way you dress. Just do it.
