IRIS AWARDS 2014

The 2014 Iris awards and Infocus conference has just been held, and once again for those who made the effort, I know the experience in Rotorua was worth the time and investment. It was a special time for me personally, as after nearly twenty-five years a member I have finally taken on the responsibility to be your President for the next couple of years. The print judging was a joy this year as your Honours committee was right on top of their game, the entries of a high standard and the chosen judges working well together. Robust debate and a dedication by judges to giving every image the attention it deserved, resulted in some incredible work being discovered. For the first time anyone can remember an image scored an average of 99. An extremely brave subject and her equally brave photographer, Catherine Cattanach creating a respect for the many issues that abound in the disease of breast cancer. Catherine’s brilliant award acceptance speech was one of the highlights of the night for me. If anything else her work showed how powerful what we do is. As they say a picture speaks a thousand words. In this instance no words could have created the emotional response her image did. Catherine did femininity proud. Remember to those who did so well to maximise the result of your efforts by letting your own community know. Local media is always news hungry. The human interest aspects of your achievements will go down well and give further validity to the powers we have in memory creation. The King of the night turned out to be Richard Wood. As always he produced the highest of quality in volume. His portfolio irresistible to the judges and right now I hope he is feeling like the creative genius he is. Probably more well known now for his postproduction skills, I was smart enough to attend his “ lighting on the run “ presentation. Richard’s straight imagery is equally beautiful and I wish he could have gone on all day. Like all the presenters he was very generous with his knowledge and it reinforced to me why each and every one of you should make the effort to attend these events. Where else are you going to see people as good as any in the world sharing in this way. I will be harping on re this subject as the year goes by, and with your new board creating a framework for you to think about and act on. The presenters at Infocus were of the highest caliber. The intensely beautiful journey that Michael Kenna seems to live every day was evident in the soul of all his work. A film user, it was really cool to see his skills in printing and his sheer dedication to his craft. Some scenes he would capture again and again over years apart, bringing a variety of moods that were spellbinding to us all. As a balance to that was the energy and humour and equal parts of genius by Dan O’Day. His presentation sparked with a freshness of self belief and confidence. He was a real creator and his “ happy + 1 + 1 “ was something I will bring to every sitting I do from here on. What does that mean? You should have been there!!

Images always stir emotions of some sort but our own Rachel Callander had a tear in everyones eyes. Seriously it was blubber city!! How grateful I feel that she and her lovely husband Sam can share with us all such an emotional journey. It rocked my world and made me question the parent I am. The parents of these children with “super powers “ while faced with their special challenges were somehow uplifted to levels of performance and love that perhaps escape those of us blessed with healthy children. Rachel was left with no doubt how much her NZIPP family love her. No event like this is possible without our sponsors and exhibitors. Epson has been and still is our main sponsor. It is incredible the amount of money they generously provide for your betterment. I am pleased to announce they have committed to another three years of supporting us, and I would ask that you in turn support them. I have personally been running a 44” inch printer for over ten years and it has never missed a beat. The efficiencies it provides my studio are unbeatable. In the coming months I hope to bring you and all our industry suppliers closer together. If you have questions about anything we as an Institute want to have the answer provided for you. The greatest feeling of all for me is being part of a family. In this instance it is our Institute that provides me with friendships, help and education. We as a Board are determined that you will need to never ask the question “what do we get for our money?“ Instead you will be advocates spreading the word of belonging to a forward thinking and active organisation. Our goal is to further our efforts to find the right education for you all to operate profitably in this ever challenging environment. But don’t just be still and holding your hand out. To further ourselves we must all put effort into participating in the activities organised by hard working committees in your regions and nationally. We will be asking the question of what your needs are. We will be challenging you to be accountable for your advancement. So many times I see people faltering with a lack of self belief. For those that have the nouse to share their areas of non performance there are others among you who are ready to help. Take part ladies and gentleman and help us help you. kind regards

This year’s Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards has been a fantastic event and once again we have awarded and celebrated the phenomenal achievements of professional photographers from across NZ (and even Australia). From over 1080 entries, 774 of these were presented with an award, demonstrating the high standards, enthusiasm & passion people have for the professionalism of photography in New Zealand. The caliber of work was outstanding and this constantly acknowledged through the awards presented by the panels of invited national and international Judges. For the first time we were able to “Live Stream” the event, meaning it was not just the in-room audience that had the pleasure of being educated through healthy discussion and debate. Our online audiences were also able to soak up the comments provided by the panel of judges. The excitement and enthusiasm for this was evident, with many out there in cyberland unable to take eyes and ears away from their computer screens and the online communication feeds filled with constant chatter. To all those who were involved or listened in, whether in the judging rooms themselves, or via the Live Streaming, we hope that you were able to gain something from the experience (how could you not). The culmination of all this, as is tradition, was the Awards Gala Dinner. An opportunity that was not just about awarding the overall winners, but also about acknowledging all those who participated, & celebrating what it means to be part of the NZIPP family. As a result of the 2014 awards the NZIPP gained 25 new Associates, 16 Masters, 6 Bar to Masters, 12 Fellows and 19 Bar to Fellows. The NZIPP congratulates Richard Wood, as 2014 NZ Professional Photographer of the Year, and all those who won categories and awards!! What must also be remembered is that we would not be able to hold such an event without the incredible support we receive from our sponsors.
